This will be our final edition from Australia. As many of you may know, I will return to the UK on October 11th after spending ten years here. I am excited to rejoin the electronic music scene in Europe and the UK. The next few weeks will be quite busy for me: I will move into a short-term rental, purchase some wheels, and then search for a permanent home with my daughter and son-in-law. Join us for an engaging chat with Tito Ferradans, creator of Anamorphic on a Budget, as we journey through his experience in filmmaking, from researching lenses and adapters to understanding the cinematic language. Tito shares the behind-the-scenes of his process, the struggles and successes he faced, and how his work evolved from a YouTube channel to a popular resource for aspiring filmmakers. We also touch on Tito's transition from computer science to film, a unique experience with Panavision, and his take on anamorphic lens development. In this episode, we reflect on the importance of film history in education and discuss the value of hands-on experience in film school. We delve into our personal experiences of giving bad advice, including Tito's recommendation to glue the inside of a lens with super glue and my suggestion to put a beach worth of sand inside a lens. Listen in as we explore how learning through trial and error played a crucial role in our understanding of the cinematic language. Tito also opens up about the challenges and opportunities he faced while collaborating with sponsors and growing his YouTube channel. We chat about his process of creating short films to test lenses, and the creative approaches he took to filming. Wrapping up the episode, we take a critical look at Netflix's meta trend, discuss our favorite sci-fi shows, and reminisce about our own college filmmaking experiences. How many of you know what an anamorphic lens is? if your answer is: "Those lenses with the sweet blue flares from JJ Abrams movies!", then today's episode will blow your mind.  Yes, most anamorphic lenses give you beautiful lens flares, but they are more than that. One today's episode of In Love with the Process Podcast we talk about creating a larger stage for actor performances and blocking, enabling you to film 3 people in a close-up, and much much more.  ILWP host and director Mike Pecci has been shooting his horror films with anamorphic lenses for years now, and he recently just shot a short film using the Atlas Lens Co. At the film's press conference, we welcomed Noah Baumbach and select cast members Greta Gerwig, Raffey Cassidy, May Nivola, and Sam Nivola, composer Danny Elfman, and songwriter James Murphy in conversation with NYFF's Artistic Director, Dennis Lim. Their wide-ranging discussion covers adapting the "unfilmable" Don DeLillo novel, the story's frightening similarities to our current pandemic, working with a very large cast, and shooting in Anamorphic widescreen. When done well, OOH smashes it. Local brands have been lagging, but the smart ones are learning from the likes of Nike, driving a “creative revolution” in digital out of home, reckons Neil Ackland, oOh!media's Chief Content, Marketing and Creative Officer. While tech like QR codes, 3D animation, location data and anamorphic screens can drive huge results, “There's a difference between what is available that creatives can use and then what's actually coming through the pipeline,” he says. Jetstar ran a QR code-based campaign in Melbourne and reached 6 million people with press coverage. Nike and Twitter are trying innovating creative – then sharing the campaigns on social to drive more engagement. Ackland says oOh! has launched a creative department, Poly, to reverse the lag. “We have to show brands through action how to deliver great out of home creative,” he says. You are in for a treat today. We have returning champion writer/director Sean Baker. Sean Baker is a writer, director, producer and editor who has made seven independent feature films over the course of the past two decades. His most recent film was the award-winning The Florida Project (2017) which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and was released by A24 in the U.S. Among the many accolades the film received -- including an Oscar nomination for Willem Dafoe for Best Supporting Actor -- Sean was named Best Director by the New York Film Critics Circle. His previous film Tangerine (2015) premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and won an Independent Spirit and two Gotham Awards. Starlet (2012) was the winner of the Robert Altman Independent Spirit Award and his previous two features, Take Out (2004) and Prince of Broadway (2008), were both nominated for the John Cassavetes Independent Spirit Award. His remarkable new film is Red Rocket. The audacious new film from writer- director Sean Baker (The Florida Project, Tangerine), starring Simon Rex in a magnetic, live-wire performance, Red Rocket is a darkly funny, humane portrait of a uniquely American hustler and a hometown that barely tolerates him.I watched Red Rocket and I have to tell you it's one of the best films I've seen this year. Sean and I discuss his creative process, how he shot Red Rocket with a 10 person crew and a very limited budget, during COVID. Red Rocket opens today in theaters. Enjoy my conversation with Sean Baker.

As the FX9 doesn't have a dedicated Anamorphic mode or even a Open Gate 6:5 mode like other cameras, how much do you need to crop in to remove vignetting? Is it better to use the S35 mode or 6K Full Frame mode when using 2X anamorphic lenses? Well lucky for you i've shot two projects using 2X anamorphic with the FX9 and the short answer is "It does work with limitations". The FX9's sensor is actually really large 35.7 x 18.8 mm compared to the Alexa Mini that has a Open Gate mode using it's full sensor of 28.25 x 18.17 mm. Using the FX9 in 6K FF mode you have a lot of room in post when using 2X anamorphic to maintain image fidelity, but not every anamorphic setup is going to work which I explain in this podcast episode. The vision of imaging and optics in film technology brought together two individuals with a dedicated expertise in the field to create anamorphic lens for your smartphone camera. In episode 66 of the SBP Podcast Mobile Filmmaking, we share the exciting story of how Moondog Labs came to be through the dedication of founders Julie Gerstenberger and Scott Cahall. Moondog Labs created the first anamorphic lens available to mobile filmmakers. Their background is with Eastman Kodak. Their expertise is impressive and so are their lenses. Julie and Scott can trace the beginning of Moondog Labs back to Sean Baker’s “Tangerine,” shot with the iPhone 5s. If the film sounds familiar it’s because it was perhaps the first iPhone film to raise the bar in the mobile filmmaking industry. The film made waves when it premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. Scott and Julie were invited to attend and witnessed the reaction from the audience when, only after the film was finished, the end of the credits announced the film was entirely shot with the iPhone. Listen to both Julie and Scott share their accounts of why they do what they do, their experiences with the mobile filmmaking community and some details about their products. Amongst their stories, they share how far films shot with smartphones have come and a bit of what they see in the future of mobile filmmaking with smartphone cameras. “The challenge of really taking what we know, which is imaging and optics specifically, and translating—you know, what filmmakers and some photographers want from the creative side of what they’re doing and the stories that they want to tell…” Julie Gerstenberger“In the past you could change the film stock to get a different look. Now, you can change the lens to get a different look. And you could do that before but it’s become one of the more primary levers now, I would say than, I mean, you don’t swap out a sensor in your camera. But you can swap out a lens.” Scott CahallThey shared a sneak-peek of their newest product to be announced very soon. If you are a filmmaker at any level of your interest of making feature and short films using smartphones, you’ll want to follow Moondog Labs on social media and visit their website. Exciting DJI News, DJI Rumors and other Drone News... In our first big drone news story, we have some exciting news for you. DJI has resumed production of their flagship drone, the Phantom 4 Pro. We have repeatedly discussed why the Phantom 4 Pro is unmatched when it comes to reliability and versatility. But, will DJI again discontinue production in 2020 when ADSB receivers on all drones become mandatory? Will we see a slew of DJI drone launches in 2020 when this new requirement kicks in? Our next big drones news story is about the DJI Ronin-SC. DJI has launched a mini version of their popular camera gimbal, the Ronin-S. This new camera gimbal comes with some pretty impressive features like Active Trak 3.0 and Force Mobile. Weighing just 2.4 lbs, this compact camera gimbal allows you to follow a subject, pretty much like a drone. While this new camera gimbal is lighter and cheaper (costs $439) than its predecessor, will this compact build limit payload? Our next story is about New York City drone laws. An archaic 71-year old law prohibits takeoff and landing of drones in New York City. Now, two New York City Council members have proposed new drone laws that legalize drone use. Other topics discussed include anamorphic lenses for the Mavic 2 and the new BBC documentary, Britain's Next Air Disaster? Drones. Recently crashed your drone? Unable to find trained technicians who can repair your drone quickly and at a reasonable rate? Don’t fret. The cool folks at Fortress UAV can help you get your drone back up in the air in as little as 7 days! Use Promo Code “DroneU” to get 25% off. David's temporary street drawings are composed entirely of chalk, charcoal and found objects, and are always improvised on location through a process known as “pareidolic anamorphosis.” This technique makes his chalk art appear three dimensional. In this episode, David and I talk about how he makes a living drawing tiny creatures on the sidewalk out of chalk, why he loves the ephemerality of an art form that disappears after it rains, and his advice for people who are searching to find their own creative voice. Few would contest the claim that Shakespeare was a great poet and playwright. Less indisputable, perhaps, is the notion that he was also a great social theorist. By this, I'm not referring to theory in the weak sense of occasional philosophically nuanced comments by characters, or speeches with philosophical overtones. I mean that Shakespeare was a social theorist in the strong sense that, in addition to being powerful stories, his plays often are extended reflections on many of the classic issues of social thought. If I'm right about this, it raises an important question about literary technique and voice. Normally the analytical voice of the theorist is very different and in some sense in tension with the narrative voice of the dramatist or novelist. Reconciling the requirements of effective theoretical analysis and affecting dramatic narrative is a major challenge. This talk, adapted from my upcoming book on Shakespeare and social theory, deals with one important way in which Shakespeare accomplished this literary pas de deux by adapting anamorphic projection, a visual technique perfected by Renaissance painters, to literary narrative. Anamorphosis developed in relation to the Renaissance science of optics and its far-reaching effects on perspective. While anamorphic projection has been widely appreciated in the history of painting, its use as a holographic literary technique is less well-known, and its use by Shakespeare as a way of expanding the semantic range of his plays is virtually unappreciated.
