A new type of drug for one of the most common types of breast cancer is now going to be available in the NHS in England. In Wales, the drug is approved for use but its funding is still to be decided, and the drug hasn't been approved for use in Scotland and Northern Ireland yet. Some 3,000 women a year could benefit after a clinical trial showed it can slow the progression of the disease. Nuala McGovern discusses how the drug works and who could benefit with Dr Liz O'Riordan, a former breast cancer surgeon who herself has had breast cancer and is currently in remission.Emily MacGregor is a music historian and trombonist. After the sudden death of her father, a jazz guitarist, she found she wasn't able to bear the sound of music. The very thing that once connected them became a source of pain and silence. In her new book, While the Music Lasts, she explains how she reconnected with her father through the pieces left on his music stand, from tangos to Handel, Cádiz to Coltrane. She joins Nuala to talk about how she learnt to navigate grief and how she discovered the joy of music again.Between 2021 and 2022 the number of women having abortions rose by 17%. A recent study in the BMJ reported that, amongst women having abortions, the number of women using hormonal contraception fell from 18.8% in 2018 to 11.3% in 2023. Over the same period, the number of women undergoing abortions who were not using any contraception when they conceived went up by 14%. So are women turning their backs on hormonal contraceptives? Does this change lie with the contraceptives themselves, women's access to contraception or could there be other factors like the increase in the use of fertility apps? Nuala speaks to Dr Paula Briggs, Consultant in Sexual & Reproductive Health, and journalist Barbara Speed. In 2014, the Church of England passed the necessary laws to allow women to become bishops. For some, this was a controversial decision. In an attempt to smooth that change the five guiding principles were introduced which allowed those who felt unable to accept women's ministry to flourish within the church. Now WATCH, Women and the Church, are calling for those provisions to be removed. Nuala speaks to Reverend Martine Oborne, Chair of WATCH, and Dr Ros Clarke, Associate Director of Church Society. Later this week, on March 8, we'll celebrate International Women's Day. It's a time to acknowledge the achievements of women, as well as championing equality. And today, on All Things Considered, in an episode originally broadcast in 2024, we consider the way women are presented in the New Testament, their place in Jesus's ministry and the early church. We ask whether women were silenced in the Bible and explore the extent to which we have an accurate picture of the way the culture and the church viewed women, both then and now. To discuss these issues, Jonathan Thomas speaks with:Helen Bond, Professor of Christian origins at the University of Edinburgh Dr Ros Clarke, who runs The Priscilla Programme, an online training course for women, in partnership with Church Society and Union School of Theology Arfon Jones, who worked on a translation of the Bible into colloquial Welsh and published the booklet 'Beibl ar... The inscription on John Owen's grave says he is "a traveler on earth who grasped God like one in heaven." Later, he was called "the Prince of Puritans." How did he earn these high praises while navigating one of the most tumultuous times in British history, when hundreds of others were forced to leave the country? Why did they find six boxes of pistols in his house? And how was he instrumental in bringing John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress to print? The main goal of the Society of Saint Pius X is to preserve the Catholic Faith in its fullness and purity, to teach its truths, and to diffuse its virtues, especially through the Roman Catholic priesthood. What people need is the Catholic Faith, without compromise, with all the truth and beauty which accompanies it.

The Church of England has abandoned the teaching of Jesus with prayers for same sex blessings potentially to start before Christmas. ‘Tragic' says Gafcon.‘Disastrous' says the Global South. ‘Deeply Troubled' says the Church of England Evangelical Council‘First order difference requires first order differentiation' says Vaughan Roberts ‘It is hard not to dissolve into a flood of tears' says the Mark Thompson the principal of Sydney's Moore College. ‘The Archbishop of Canterbury should resign' - says the Church Society's Lee Gatiss. The English General Synod has crossed a line that evangelicals across the world had been praying and hoping would not happen. The General Synod expressed its support by a tiny majority of just a few votes for the continued implementation of the House of Bishops proposals to change the position and practice of the Church of England with regards to sexual ethics and marriage. We now expect the English bishops to commend prayers of blessing for same sex couples by mid-December (and provide dedicated services soon after), to prepare guidance which will make it possible for clergy to marry their same sex partners, and that future ordinands will not to be asked to indicate whether their lifestyle and personal relationships are in keeping with the doctrine of the Church of England.Vaughan Roberts is one of the UK's leading evangelical ministers within the church of England.  Vaughan is senior pastor of St Ebbes in Oxford.http://www.thepastorsheart.net/podcast/vaughan-roberts-on-english-synodSupport the show--To make a one off contribution to support The Pastor's Heart's ministry go to this link, or to become a regular Patreon supporter click here.

The work of the North Texas Conference Board of Church and Society is to raise awareness regarding issues of justice, raise and distribute funds for the work of justice, and provide opportunities for local churches and individuals to engage in the work of justice. This month's episode covers all bases as Rev. Phil Dieke, Board Chair, interviews two previous Peace with Justice grant recipients and fellow board member Rev. James Minor who is coordinating an auction to raise fund for the Peace with Justice grants. The first grant recipient we hear from is Janet Fisher. Janet is a member of First UMC Denton and co-founder, with her husband Dennis, of Marfa Ministry. Marfa Ministry works with eight Eurasian United Methodist Churches, seven in Russian and one in Ukraine. Janet shares how the Peace with Justice grant helped support their work with these ministries and also shares the struggle these ministries have experienced given the ongoing war in Ukraine. There are many ways to get involved with the work of Marfa Ministries, including buying some of their art and/or puzzles! Learn more about this incredible ministry here. The second grant recipient we hear from is Rev. Cathy Sweeney. Though she currently serves at Arapaho UMC in Richardson, Cathy received the grant when she was serving at Christ UMC in Plano where they started a warming station in partnership with The Salvation Army. This has become an ecumenical project reaching across Plano and the greater Collin County area. You can read more about their work and sign up to volunteer or donate here. Finally, we hear from Rev. James Minor, a retired clergyperson in the North Texas Conference. James serves on the NTC Board of Church and Society, specifically as the Peace with Justice coordinator. James has a great passion to raise money for these grants so local congregations will feel supported and encouraged to engage in the work of justice in their own communities or all around the world. If you or your local congregation would like to donate items for the auction in June, you can do so by filling out this form. The more items collected, the more money raised. There will be a silent auction as well as an inperson auction on Tuesday, June 7 at Hamilton Park UMC. Stay tuned for more info regarding this auction. Texas Impact exists to put faith into action by equipping faith leaders and their congregations with information, opportunities, and outreach tools to educate their communities and engage with lawmakers on pressing public policy issues. This conversation gives an update on the Texas Legislature, which recently the third special called session came to a close. Much of the focus was on voting, specifically the legislation that is making voting more difficult and the why behind the need to mobilize voters in our communities. Texas Impact will be partnering with the North Texas Board of Church and Society to host a "Voter Mobilization Training" on November 13, 2021. Stay tuned for more details and registration. Growing Up | Roles Part 2: Church/Society, Part 1 By Nick Quigley Original Air Date: 2019.09.22 Growing Up – it is something we can't wait to do when we are children but try to slow down as we get older. Part of growing up is the process of maturing. Being able to make wise choices, interact with others, hold down a job, communicate effectively, work through conflict, and handle our finances - are all key qualities of a mature person. Spiritual maturity is the driving force in all of these areas and is not dependent on age. The definition of mature in Merriam Webster's dictionary is: having attained a final or desired state. In the Bible, Philippians 1:6 says, “And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.” When we strive for spiritual maturity, we can be assured that the work God began in us won't end until we are complete according to His standards! Everything else will fall into place. You are invited to join us as we study the different aspects of spiritual maturity and how they apply in daily life. We will cover… Growing Up: Responsible, Prepared, Emotionally Stable, and Spiritual as well as addressing the roles of Parents and Children. The final message will be our “Ask It!” message that gives everyone an opportunity to ask any question they have about the Bible, God, Jesus, Marriage, Money – anything! We hope you enjoy this series and study guide. We encourage you to invite your friends and family to join you! To dig a little deeper into these topics, please download our free daily study guide on our website (http://www.crossroads-ridgecrest.org/media.html#study-guides) or app: Apple iTunes (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/crossroads-ridgecrest/id1344909774?mt=8); Google Play (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.customchurchapps.crossroadsridgecrest)

In this new series, we delve into the topic of justification, following the 39 Articles - a document produced at the time of the reformation, part of the foundation of the Church of England.
