Mark Beaman Kenwood Vineyards winemaker Mark Beaman joins Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger in the studio today on California Wine Country. The last time Kenwood Vineyards was on CWC was this episode of July 19, 2018, with the previous winemaker Pat Henderson. Dan Berger has brought another cellar wine today for tasting, a 2002 Riesling. It shows how Rieslings can age well. They are fresh and fruity when they are young but they also age very well and this wine is a good example of that. Mark Beaman begins by telling the story of Kenwood Vineyards. There have been vines on the property since 1906. He describes how the Pastore family made wine there until 1970. The wine library at Kenwood goes back to the 1970s. The present owner, Pernod-Ricard, purchased the property in 2014. Of course, Mark has brought a Chardonnay. They open a Six Ridges Chardonnay, from Russian River AVA. It is a late ripening Chardonnay location. The wine has “big mineral character” and “racy acidity.” The acidity is strong enough to make a rich mid-palette and a wine that will go well with food. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Bottle Barn online for the coolest bargains on wine, beer and spirits. The harvest this year seems late but Mark remembers other years beyond the last several years, with a similar timeline. This year reminds him of 2019 when he was picking Sonoma Valley Cabernet well into October It also reminds him of 2010. From eastern Washington to Tanzania, Hawaii and Sonoma Co. Mark Beaman grew up in agriculture in southeastern Washington. They grew alfalfa and wheat and had cattle. He went to college up there and got a degree in Geology. He joined the Peace Corps and lived in East Africa, in Tanzania, for about two and a half years, in a small village. He learned to speak Swahili. He also got introduced to fermentation science there, when he knew someone who made mead. After he came back, he worked for Columbia Crest winery “low on the totem pole.” They moved him to California, to a facility in Hopland. He learned viticulture and got into the laboratory. Then he worked for Parducci wines, making organic, biodynamic and sustainable wines. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Rodney Strong for up-to-date info on concerts and other events. After that, he decided it was time for another adventure, so he moved his young family to Hawaii where he made wine from both grapes and pineapple. He was there for close to three years. He enjoys the atmosphere of Sonoma County where there are a lot of other winemakers who share ideas and motivation. He liked it as a combination of the wildness of Mendocino and the pressures of Napa. He worked at Valley of the Moon winery, then Sebastiani, and now, since April, at Kenwood. He is also attracted to the great number of varietals grown in Sonoma County, since he loves to experiment. Kenwood Vineyard is open seven days a week for tastings by reservation only, 10 am to 5 pm.

Dan Berger & Mark Beeman Mark Beeman, winemaker at Sebastiani, is in the studio today to talk to Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger on California Wine Country. Sebastiani wines has been in business since before 1904, but the vineyard goes all the way back to 1825 when the Franciscan padres who established a mission in Sonoma also planted a vineyard that year. That vineyard is still on the Sebastiani property. Samuele Sebastiani came from Tuscany and landed in Sonoma County around 1897, working first as a mason. He built a lot of the facilities and facades around the area and at the winery, including the stone arch gate in the illustration above and the Sebastiani Theater, built in 1933. The winery is gorgeous and one of the great visits in the area. Samuel Sebastiani planted a cherry orchard where Cherry Block is planted today. Samuel's son August replanted it from cherries to vines in 1961. Cabernet has always been at the heart of this winery. They were labeling it since the 1940s and helped put Sonoma County on the map for Cabernet as a variety. They have the huge old redwood tanks that they used to use, that decorate the tasting room. Mark Beeman Mark Beeman grew up on a cattle ranch, his parents were forensic chemists and he got a degree in Geology. Then he joined the Peace Corps and did agro-forestry and conservation work in Tanzania. When he came back from East Africa, he saw that the wine industry was blossoming in eastern Washington and he got a job at Columbia Crest winery. That led to Conn Creek and Villa Mt. Eden. Later he met Paul Dolan and the Thornhill family who were the new owners of Parducci winery in Ukiah, Mendocino County. He worked there about 12 years. A few years ago he went to Maui to make wine, for three years. Now he has been the winemaker at Sebastiani since December of 2020. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Bottle Barn online for the best deals on wine, beer and spirits. After Peace Corps he knew he needed more knowledge so he took courses at UC Davis, took online courses and studied at Santa Rosa Junior College. But Mark also gives credit to his colleages. There are other winemakers in the Foley portfolio, such as Chalk Hill and Ferrari-Carrano. They collaborate, debate, talk and learn from each other. “The education isn't always just at school, it's also with your co-workers.” Dan Berger has brought another cellar wine today, a 2017 MacRostie Winery Chardonnay from Sonoma Coast. It has good acidity, bright fruit, and some complexity. For comparison, Mark has brought a 2019 Chardonnay called Patrick's Block, which Sebastiani controls, so they have full say over everything from dirt to cork. It has lemon peel flavors and Dan says it's “Burgundian,” that is rich but not just fruity, it has rustic character from lees contact and barrel aging. Tastings With its new ownership, Sebastiani has been a part of Foley Food and Wine Society, since 2008. Mark Beeman works closely with the other winemakers in the group. For example, they just met to discuss how to improve white wines. Membership in the society provides benefits at their many tasting rooms and wineries. They then taste their Sangiovese, the grape of Chianti wine. It comes from two differently-situated vineyards in Alexander Valley, which produce complimentary flavors. The oak is very light, which Dan Berger says is important for Sangiovese. It has some cranberry flavors too. At last they taste their 2019 Alexander Valley Cabernet, which showcases what the fruit can do in this area. It won a Double Gold Medal at the SF Chronicle competition.

The Columbia Crest H3 Les Chevaux Red 2016 is a blend of Merlot, Syrah, and Malbec, (along with other Red varietals) sourced from vineyards in the Horse Heaven Hills AVA (also known as H3) inside the Columbia Valley AVA of Washington State. The Horse Heaven Hills AVA is located east of Vancouver and west of the Walla Walla AVA and situated along the northern banks of the Columbia River. Like the name suggests early settlers found herds of wild horses in the area.Columbia Crest is the second label for Chateau Ste. Michelle. I have read that the Chateau Ste. Michelle's family of wines accounts for 50% of the wines produced in Washington. The Columbia Crest label was started in the early 1980s.Do not let Columbia Crest's 2nd label designation fool you, their wines have been featured in many "Best Of' lists and in 2009 one of their reserve wines, a Cabernet Sauvignon, was Wine Spectators Wine of the Year. Their wines may not be expensive, but they have a history of quality. This review is for the 2016 vintage, the 2017 vintage is also available. They changed the label completely for 2017, it went from a dark label to mostly white. The name Les Chevaux translates to "the Horse" in French. Columbia Crest does not go into great detail on the making of the Columbia Crest H3 Les Chevaux Red 2016. But they do mention a couple of important things. One thing that stood out is this Red Blend was aged in French and American oak barrels for twenty-two months. That is an impressive amount of oak conditioning for a wine I found on sale for under twelve bucks and I think is even cheaper at Costco. Most Red wines in the general $10 range are intentionally made to come together quickly. That typically means less oak barrel aging or maybe no oak aging at all. The rule of thumb with oak barrel aging and there are variables, is that the wine needs to age one month in the bottle of each month of aging in the barrel. This is not a hard, fast rule, but it gives you an idea of much aging a wine had, by how soon after harvest it was released for sale.Wines that can be released sooner are often less expensive than wines that need more time to develop. So a wine that has extensive (for the price point) oak aging is an excellent surprise.Winemakers have learned to do a commendable job of adding oak flavoring to wines that do not have a great deal of oak contact. But the one thing that they can not replicate is what happens to the wine it has been in barrel for almost two years. The melding of flavors can only come with time. The 2nd production detail that caught my eye is they only could name tree of the grapes in the blend, they simply said "along with other grape varietals", how do they not know what grapes they used? You would figure they would know something like that. It actually occurs fairly often in Red blends. There must be a reason for the uncertainty, some legalese, some state labeling requirements, who knows? The alcohol content is 14.5%.Columbia Crest H3 Les Chevaux Red 2016 Tasting NotesThe color is barelt see-thru black cherry red. The nose is rich, intense blackberry, black pepper, spice, black cherry, dark chocolate, a hint of vanilla, and raspberry. This is a rich, mostly smooth Red blend that has a rich spice counter-point to the smooth ripe flavors. It starts with blackberry, tea, exotic spice, licorice, and a touch of cream. The mid-palate shows tart cranberry, black pepper, a nutty, salty sensation, and dried strawberry bits. The tannins are smooth and the acidity allows the flavors to unfold. The SummaryThe Columbia Crest H3 Les Chevaux Red 2016 is a solid red blend, full of flavor and detail that sells for a bargain price. The 2017 vintage is available now and I am sure it is ready to go and drinks great, but if 2016 is also available alongside 2017 I think I might grab 2016.When you have an affordable wine with a nice bit of oak barrel aging an extra year in the bottle wi..

In 2005, he graduated from Eastern Washington University with a degree in biology, looking to use his biology degree in a laboratory, Klei completed an internship in the lab at Snoqualmie Winery in Eastern Washington for the 2005 harvest. After the harvest, he worked in a few other laboratories, but quickly found that none of the other jobs could match up to working at a winery, when a full time lab position opened at SMWE, Klei jumped at the opportunity to return to the industry. As his time there progressed, Klei found he was interested in more than just the laboratory side of winemaking. With the support of the winemaking team, Klei found his true passion for the industry. In 2008, Klei was named enologist for Columbia Crest out of Patterson, Washington, and in 2012 he was promoted to assistant winemaker. In 2015, Klei began overseeing winemaking for motto wines. Wines tasted: - Meridian Vineyards, Central Coast, Pinot Noir 2003 ($9) - Columbia Crest, “Grand Estates”, Merlot 2001 ($12) - Clos du Val, Napa Valley, Cabernet Sauvignon 2001 ($25)
