Wednesday, 4 February 2026   And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.  Matthew 16:18   “And I also, I say to you that you, you are Peter, and upon this – the Rock – I will build My out-calling, and Hades' gates, not they will overpower her” (CG).   In the previous verse, Jesus noted that Simon Bar-Jonah was blessed because it wasn't flesh and blood that illuminated his proclamation. Rather, it was the Father in heaven who did. He continues, saying, “And I also, I say to you.”   Jesus is going to illuminate more concerning what Peter said, expanding on it to ensure that what was said is highlighted and magnified. With that understanding, Jesus emphatically declares, “that you, you are Peter.”   The name Peter has already been seen and explained. It is a masculine noun, Pétros, meaning rock. It is generally a piece of a rock, like a small rock or stone, found along a path. Jesus continues with, “and upon this – the Rock – I will build.”   The word now is petra, a feminine noun signifying a mass of rock, such as a projecting cliff. HELPS Word Studies, citing Zodhiates, says, “(Pétros) always means a stone . . . such as a man may throw, . . . versus 4073 (pétra), a projecting rock, cliff" (S. Zodhiates, Dict).   Of this difference, Ellicott [et al] says, “it would seem clear that the connection between Peter and the rock (the words in the Greek differ in gender, πέτρος [Pétros] and πέτρα [petra], but were identical in the Aramaic, which our Lord probably used) was meant to be brought into special prominence.”   This conclusion may or may not be correct, but the basis for it is inane. The New Testament is written in Greek, not Aramaic. Therefore, the difference cannot be ignored or downplayed. There is obviously wordplay seen, but a definite distinction is being made between Pétros and petra.   As for what Jesus is talking about, there are several prominent views. One is that He is referring not to Peter, but to his proclamation: “You, You are the Christ, the Son of God, the living.” Others believe Jesus is referring to Himself as the Rock. Still others say that it is, in fact, referring to Peter, but without all of the later-added Roman Catholic baggage that has nothing to do with the simple pronouncement.   Further, what is lacking in Jesus' words is as telling as what He has stated. Jesus does not simply state, “and upon you I will build...” However, in the coming verse, Jesus will directly speak to Peter with words concerning his position and authority. Therefore, Jesus is not speaking of Peter in His words now.   Letting Scripture interpret Scripture, both testaments tell us who the Rock is. Again and again, in typology and in direct metaphor, the Lord is called the Rock. A couple of the many such examples –   “He is the Rock [tsur], His work is perfect; For all His ways are justice, A God of truth and without injustice; Righteous and upright is He.” Deuteronomy 32:4   “The Lord lives! Blessed be my Rock [tsur]! Let the God of my salvation be exalted.” Psalm 18:46   In the New Testament, Paul and Peter both refer to Christ in this way –   Moreover, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware that all our fathers were under the cloud, all passed through the sea, 2 all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 3 all ate the same spiritual food, 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock [petra] that followed them, and that Rock was Christ. 1 Corinthians 10:1-4   Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious; but to those who are disobedient, “The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone,” 8 and “A stone of stumbling And a rock [petra] of offense.” 1 Peter 2:7, 8   As such, the Rock is both the proclamation and the Person. Peter wasn't speaking about an ethereal concept. He was asked to identify who Jesus was. His proclamation is that of Jesus being the Rock, the Lord Yehovah, who is the Christ, whether Peter realized that or not. Jesus was thinking in human terms, but Scripture, and thus Jesus, is referring to God's means and mode of redemption.   This is all the more certain because the cornerstone is what Paul refers to as well. It is the setting stone of a foundation –   “For we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field, you are God's building. 10 According to the grace of God, which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it. 11 For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” 1 Corinthians 3:9-11   Jesus, probably pointing to Himself, acknowledging Peter's confession and what it means, said that He is the Rock. God's building is not set upon Peter. It is set upon Christ. This building is, as Jesus says, “My out-calling.”   It is a new word, ekklésia, an out-calling. It is derived from ek, from or out of, and kaleó, to call. Thus, it is an out-calling, a group of people called out for a particular purpose. This is the group that Paul calls “God's building” in 1 Corinthians 3:10. Jesus says that His people will be built upon Himself, “and Hades' gates, not they will overpower her.”   Another new word, katischuó, to overpower, is used. It is an intensification of ischuó, to have or exercise force. The prefix kata, down, thus gives the sense of overpowering. What is Jesus referring to here? Unfortunately, it is often claimed as a tool for effective evangelizing, as if saying, “We have the power to storm hell itself!”   That is great for sermons, but it has nothing to do with the intent. Gates have two purposes. The first is a defensive barrier that can be opened to allow people in. The second is containment, such as when the gates are shut to keep someone from getting out, a spy or a prisoner, perhaps.   The gates of Hades are gates of containment. Hades (Old Testament Sheol) is the place of the dead. It is where all humanity is destined to go, including saved believers at this time. This is made clear time and again in the New Testament. But a day is coming when the Lord's out-calling will be taken from there, and the victory Jesus refers to now is realized –   “Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption inherit incorruption. 51 Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed— 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. 54 So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: ‘Death is swallowed up in victory.' 55 ‘O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?' 56 The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” 1 Corinthians 15:50-57   It is true that proclaiming the gospel will change a person's ultimate destiny, but it is not by our power that Hades' gates are overcome, but by the power of Jesus, the Subject of the gospel, who had already overpowered Hades' gates.   Life application: The Roman Catholic coopting of this verse to claim Peter is the first pope and that all popes after him have infallible authority to act and make decrees is utter nonsense. That assumes too much, and it lays hands on that which belongs to God alone.   If Peter were the “rock” spoken of here by Jesus, then it would mean he was the foundation of the church, as they claim. But Peter and Paul laid the same foundation, as noted above. This is then confirmed elsewhere –   “Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, 22 in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.” Ephesians 2:19-22   The “foundation” here is not speaking of the apostles and prophets, as if they are the foundation. Rather, it refers to their proclamation, which is Jesus. This is exactly what Jesus is referring to in Matthew 16. Jesus is the Chief Cornerstone, which is the basis of the foundation. He is also the entire foundation as proclaimed by God's messengers.   Sound theology always points to Jesus, not the Roman Catholic Church.   Lord God, thank You for our sure Foundation and Cornerstone, Jesus! We have a Rock, who is faithful and true, upon which our hope is grounded. Nothing, not even the gates of Hades, can separate us from You. Thank You that when we depart, it will not be forever from Your presence. Rather, a day is coming when we will be gathered to You forever. Hallelujah and Amen.

À première vue, Napoléon III et la dictée semblent appartenir à deux mondes très différents : l'un est un empereur, l'autre un exercice scolaire. Et pourtant, c'est sous son règne que la dictée moderne, telle qu'on la connaît aujourd'hui, a pris une importance décisive dans l'école française. Le lien entre les deux est à la fois politique, social et culturel.Lorsque Napoléon III arrive au pouvoir en 1852, il hérite d'un pays où l'éducation reste inégale et où la maîtrise de la langue française varie fortement selon les régions. Pour renforcer l'unité nationale et stabiliser son régime, l'empereur voit dans l'instruction un outil essentiel. Il encourage donc une réforme ambitieuse de l'école primaire, portée notamment par le ministre de l'Instruction publique, Victor Duruy. L'objectif : diffuser une culture commune, améliorer la discipline et garantir une meilleure maîtrise du français.C'est dans ce contexte que la dictée devient un exercice central. Elle incarne parfaitement l'esprit de l'époque : rigueur, ordre, respect des règles et uniformisation linguistique. Dans une France encore marquée par les patois, la dictée sert à imposer une langue écrite standardisée et à former des citoyens capables de lire les textes administratifs et les lois. Devenue obligatoire dans les écoles publiques à partir des années 1860, elle devient un symbole de l'école républicaine… avant même la République.Mais le lien le plus célèbre entre Napoléon III et la dictée vient d'un épisode littéraire presque anecdotique devenu mythique : la dictée de Mérimée. En 1857, l'écrivain Prosper Mérimée, académicien et ami du couple impérial, crée une dictée volontairement redoutable pour divertir la cour pendant les séjours aux Tuileries ou à Compiègne. Il y convoque des pièges orthographiques, des accords subtils et un vocabulaire rare.Napoléon III s'y essaie, comme les invités, et obtient un résultat… catastrophique : plus de soixante fautes selon les témoignages. Cet épisode, relayé plus tard avec humour, contribue à populariser l'idée que la dictée est un exercice prestigieux, capable de révéler le niveau linguistique des plus puissants comme des simples élèves. Mérimée n'inventait pas la dictée, mais il en faisait un objet culturel, un défi intellectuel, presque un jeu de société aristocratique.Ainsi, entre réforme scolaire, uniformisation du français et anecdote impériale, Napoléon III a joué un rôle majeur dans la place centrale qu'occupe encore aujourd'hui la dictée dans la tradition éducative française. Poutine et Trump, conclut le Guardian : l'Europe défendra résolument le droit de l'Ukraine à une paix juste. » Réformer les mécanismes de décision El Pais à Madrid renchérit : « Plus personne ne peut feindre l'ignorance. La dernière initiative de Trump concernant l'Ukraine a servi d'électrochoc. L'UE doit agir selon son propre plan. Les dictées étaient alors très populaires, elles étaient considérées comme des jeux. Cette dictée est considérée comme étant l'une des plus difficiles de la langue française. Pour prouver que les adultes commettent aussi des fautes, ses parents décident d'organiser un grand jeu familial à l'occasion d'un grand pique-nique pendant lequel ils plancheront sur la dictée de Mérimée.La dictée de Mérimée a été écrite en 1857 par Prosper Mérimée (1803-1870) à la demande de l'impératrice Eugénie, femme de Napoléon III. Les dictées étaient alors très populaires, elles étaient considérées comme des jeux. Cette dictée est considérée comme étant l'une des plus difficiles de la langue française. Je suis certaine que tu as déjà entendu parler de la dictée et tu en as peut-être déjà fait pour progresser en français. Spoiler alert : il n'y a pas de dictée dans mon école. En faisant cet épisode, j'ai parlé des dictées avec mes élèves, notamment avec ceux du groupe du Weekly Dose of French car on apprend encore de la grammaire. Un de mes élèves avait partagé avec la classe qu'il en avait fait beaucoup dans une école de français très connue mondialement. J'étais choquée d'apprendre que la dictée était utilisée pour enseigner le Français Langue Etrangère. Saturday, 24 August 2024   And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, “He shall be called a Nazarene.” Matthew 2:23   “And having come, he dwelt in a city being called Nazareth, that it should be fulfilled having been spoken through the prophets, that a Nazarene He will be called” (CG).   In the previous verse, Joseph was warned in a dream concerning where to live in the land of Israel, noting that he withdrew to the allotments of Galilee. Now, Matthew records, “And having come, he dwelt in a city being called Nazareth.”   Albert Barnes gives a brief description of Nazareth at the time of Jesus –   “This was a small town, situated in Galilee, west of Capernaum, and not far from Cana. It was built partly in a valley and partly on the declivity of a hill, Luke 4:29. A hill is yet pointed out, to the south of Nazareth, as the one from which the people of the place attempted to precipitate the Saviour. It was a place, at that time, proverbial for wickedness, John 4:46.”   Modern Nazareth is described in Wikipedia –   It “is the largest city in the Northern District of Israel. In 2022 its population was 78,007. Known as "the Arab capital of Israel", Nazareth serves as a cultural, political, religious, economic and commercial center for the Arab citizens of Israel, as well as a center of Arab and Palestinian nationalism. The inhabitants are predominantly Arab citizens of Israel, of whom 69% are Muslim and 30.9% Christian. The city also commands immense religious significance, deriving from its status as the hometown of Jesus, the central figure of Christianity and a prophet in Islam.”   Next, based on where Joseph decided to settle, Matthew records, “that it should be fulfilled having been spoken through the prophets.”   Here, Matthew notes the plural, prophets. Therefore, unlike almost every translation, the following words are not a quote. In fact, citing it as a quote causes a false sense of the words in the minds of readers, and it sets up a real, seemingly insurmountable, problem. Rather, something was fulfilled concerning Jesus, but it is not a specific prophecy, which is “that a Nazarene He will be called.”   The word hoti (that) continues to show that this is not a quote. If it was a quote, he would have said something like Matthew 1:22, “which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying...”   However, because it is supposed by many to be a quote, innumerable commentaries have been made trying to justify the name and specify what is being quoted. In other words, and to understand some of the attempts to justify the name as being connected to the Old Testament, the Pulpit Commentary says –   “First, it may be said Nazarene cannot = Nazarite: the word differs in form, and in no sense could Christ be called a Nazarite. Secondly, the quotation is probably not from a lost prophecy. One meaning of the word Nazoræus is an inhabitant of Nazareth, but the word either (1) recalls the Hebrew word netser a Branch, a title by which the Messiah is designated Isaiah 11:1, or (2) connects itself in thought with the Hebr. natsar, to save or protect (see above), and so has reference to the name and work of Jesus, or (3) is a synonym for “contemptible” or “lowly,” from the despised position of Nazareth. Of these (3) is perhaps the least probable explanation. The play upon words which (1) and (2) involve is quite characteristic of Hebrew phraseology. The sound of the original would be either (1) He whom the prophet called the “Netser” dwells at “Netser”—(for this form of Nazareth see Smith's Bib. Dict.), or (2) He who is called “Notsri” (my protector) dwells at “Natsaret” (the protectress).”   Such commentaries have completely missed the point of what is being conveyed. Because this is not a quote, the place Nazareth and the name Nazarene do not need to be discovered in a prophecy from the Old Testament. Rather, one such reference to what Matthew is saying is:   “Nevertheless the gloom will not be upon her who is distressed, As when at first He lightly esteemed The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, And afterward more heavily oppressed her, By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, In Galilee of the Gentiles. 2 The people who walked in darkness Have seen a great light; Those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, Upon them a light has shined.” Isaiah 9:1, 2   Nazareth is a town located within Naphtali. This is in the greater region of Galilee. In other words, Matthew wasn't citing Scripture in a quote, as translations imply (quote marks, etc.). Rather, he was making a point about the writings of Old Testament prophets, such as Isaiah 9:2. Isaiah is saying the light is Christ, being called a Nazarene is a fulfillment of this prophecy.   One can think of it this way. If a prophecy noted someone would be a noted surfer in Sarasota, and he was actually living on “ta Key, they may say, "He will be called a Siesta Surfer. As Siesta Key is a part of Sarasota, the prophecy would make complete sense to those who understood it.   This explains why the word hoti, that, is included in Matthew's words. If he was citing a prophecy, the word would not be needed. But it is an explanatory preposition. If Joseph had moved to Tiberius instead of Nazareth, the words of Matthew would still speak of the fulfillment of the words of the prophets. For example –   “...that it should be fulfilled having been spoken through the prophets, that a Tiberian He will be called.”   As for the other prophets that Matthew was referring to, there are enough references to the area of greater Galilee to form many pictures of the coming Christ. For example, the selection of Hiram, the son of a widow from Naphtali, to accomplish the building of the temple for Solomon provides pictures of the coming Christ (see 1 Kings 7).   Specificity is not necessary in pinpointing a single reference to the name Nazareth, and all of the unnecessary attempts to find a suitable Hebrew word to justify this inclusion by Matthew have proven meritless.   Life application: Speaking of Nazareth and Nazarenes, there is a modern couple, Nazarenes, who have helped bring the land of Israel to the attention of innumerable people. If you enjoy travel and life videos concerning Israel, including modern Nazareth, you can go to YouTube and search for Sergio and Rhoda in Israel.   These two intrepid trekkers have traveled throughout the country, meeting with archaeologists, travelers, and common folk to highlight the great variety of all types of life in the land. Take time to visit their channel and learn to experience Israel in unique and interesting ways that will inform you about this land selected by God to reveal to us the Messiah of the world, Jesus Christ.   Lord God, thank You for Your precious word that tells us about Your interactions with humanity in and around the land of Israel. Thank You for the innumerable examples of life, rebellion, restoration, intimate fellowship, and so much more that teach us how we can fully understand and appreciate who You are and what You have done for us. Thank You for Your wonderful word. Amen. And you are there until if I should tell you. For Herod is about to seek the Child to destroy Him.'”   14 And having arisen, he took the Child and His mother – night, and withdrew to Egypt. 15 And he was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled, having been spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, “Out of Egypt, I called my Son.”   16 Then Herod, having seen that he was mocked by the magicians, was exceedingly en raged and, having sent, he killed all the boys in Bethlehem and in all her borders, from two years and under, according to the time which he exacted from the magicians. 17 Then it was fulfilled that having been spoken through Jeremiah the prophet, saying:   18 “A voice – it was heard in Ramah, Lamentation, and a wailing, and a mourning – great. Rachel sobbing – her children. And she would not be comforted, For they are not”   19 And Herod having died, behold, a messenger of the Lord in a dream appears to Joseph in Egypt, 20 saying, “Having arisen, take the Child and His mother, and go to the land of Israel, for they have died – those seeking the soul of the Child.” 21 And having arisen, he took the Child and His mother and came to the land of Israel.   22 And having heard that Archelaus reigns over Judea instead of Herod his father, he feared to go there. And having been admonished in a dream, he withdrew to the allotments of Galilee. 23 And having come, he dwelt in a city being called Nazareth, that it should be fulfilled having been spoken through the prophets, that a Nazarene He will be called.
