"Pure self-reliance is a myth, but systemic change, without personal change, is hollow and dispiriting and ultimately cannot work. Its true that people need to act on their own behalf, but individuals do not developed such dogged self-determination until someone or some institution first helps them grasp that their effort is integral to achieving that goal. It is is this core conviction that allows them to endure as they encounter barriers along the way. This precondition is agency."Founder of Vertex Partnership Academies, Senior Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, and author of Agency: The Four Point Plan (F.R.E.E.) for ALL Children to Overcome the Victimhood Narrative and Discover Their Pathway to Power Ian Rowe is our guest today and we are taking a deep dive into education. Ian and Jay are discussing how more and more kids are being told that the system is either rigged against them or they're at fault for not being able to overcome the system, how kids will start to believe those kinds of things if they hear it enough, and how it is the responsibility of the older generation to help the younger generation. Ian has dedicated his life to the service of education and we're grateful that he has chosen to share some of his journey with us on this episode of The Culture Matters Podcast.
Competencies in Civil Discourse, a series on the effectiveness of civil discourse and the skills it requires, will feature an interview with Ian Rowe, Senior Fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and cofounder of Vertex Partnership Academies in the Bronx. His schools emphasize empowering youth to develop and exercise their agency in American society. Rowe explores these ideas in his book, Agency: The Four-Point Plan (F.R.E.E.) for All Children to Overcome the Victimhood Narrative and Discover Their Pathway to Power. In this discussion, we'll focus on how rhetorical skill is essential to fostering agency in a free and civil society. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In this week's Dissidents Podcast, Jennifer Richmond and Winkfield Twyman, Jr. speak with Ian Rowe. Ian recently wrote a review of their book (Letters in Black and White: A New Correspondence on Race in America), which he entitled Three Cheers for Colorblindness. Wink and Jen, much like they start their book, start the conversation with Ian by getting his “origin story,” i.e. what makes you tick?? The author of Agency: The Four Point Plan (F.R.E.E) for All Children to Overcome the Victimhood Narrative and Discover Their Pathway to Power, shares with us his upbringing and family foundations, that leads into the discussion of Wink's ancestral ties to America's founding father, George Washington. With such rich origin stories, why do we reduce individuals to the singular characteristic of race (the single drop rule)? The dearth of nuance and complexity that is denied when we tell our children that “blackness is oppression, nothing else matters,” constrains us from a full life of self-determination, agency and the dignity of achievement. At the end of the day, we are all cousins and recognizing that common humanity is the best path forward. Africa commemorated the Day of the African Child Sunday. The day had its beginning on June 16, 1971, when thousands of South African students in Soweto Township marched and demanded to be taught in their own language, not the Afrikaans language of apartheid South Africa. Police responded and killed hundreds of students. The theme of this year's celebration is: “Education for All Children in Africa: The Time is Now. The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has released a report which shows that most African countries are not meeting their commitment to allocate 20 percent of their national budgets on education. Sacha Westerbeek, UNICEF's chief communication officer, tells VOA's James Butty, African governments should recommit to making education a budgetary priority.

Maya Kowalski was ten years old when her father brought her to Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital in October of 2016. The previous year, Maya had been diagnosed with a rare neurological condition called Complex Regional Pain Syndrome which caused her excruciating pain. Consistent therapy and ketamine treatments had gotten Maya's condition under control, but she would have flare ups from time to time, and one of these flare ups brought her to the emergency room at All Children's Hospital, complaining of pain in her stomach. Maya would remain at the hospital for the next several months, against the wishes of herself and her parents, lawyers would later say. Her mother Beata Kowalski was accused of neglect and medical abuse, and by the time Maya was finally allowed to go home, her mother was dead, having taken her own life after being forbidden from seeing her sick daughter for 87 days. Maya's family would go on to sue Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital, claiming it's actions led to Beata Kowalski taking her own life, devastated that she could not see her daughter and that she was being accused of abusing Maya. The Kowalski family also alleged that Maya was medically kidnapped, battered and abused while in the hospital's care. This lawsuit would bring to the light deeper issues at Johns Hopkins, issues that affected far more than the Kowalski family and lead many of us to ask the question; if you can't trust those who take an oath to do no harm, who can you trust? Fifty years ago, Os Guinness released his book, The Dust of Death, which offered a piercing analysis of the sixties counterculture movement with its revolutionary ideas about human nature and sexual liberation. In his preface to a new edition of this work, Guinness argues that during this tumultuous decade, “many of the seeds of today's most radical ideas were sown, only to flower more recently in their most destructive forms.” Shane Rosenthal talks with Os about many of his observations and predictions from a half-century ago, as well as how these radical ideas eventually became mainstream.SHOW NOTESResources by Os GuinnessThe Dust of Death, and Last Call for Liberty (books)The Magna Charta of Humanity and Fools Talk (books)We're All Children of the 60's (article - TGC)I Believe in Doubt (article - Ligonier)A Free People's Suicide (video - Socrates in the City)The Magna Charta of Humanity (video - Socrates in the City)The Future of Freedom (podcast - WHI)Additional Resources by Os Guinness (website)Other Related ResourcesOs Guinness: The Christian Public Intellectual, John Shelton (article)Let's Be Civil About It, Michael Horton & Os Guinness (article - MR)Time for Truth, Ryan Glomsrud (article - MR)Be a Berean!, Shane Rosenthal (article)The Virtue of Doubt, Shane Rosenthal (article)Live Not By Lies, Rod Dreher (book)Modern Fascism: Liquidating the Judeo-Christian Worldview, Gene Veith (book)The False Gospel of Fascism, Shane Rosenthal & Gene Veith (podcast)The Political Implications of Original Sin, S. Join us for a captivating and live podcast experience as we delve deep into the heart-wrenching story of Maya Kowalski in the groundbreaking Netflix documentary, 'Take Care of Maya.' "Take Care of Maya" is a deeply moving documentary that provides a firsthand account of the tragic story of Maya Kowalski and her family's journey through a fragmented healthcare system and a flawed child protective service The documentary centers around Maya, a 10-year-old girl who was admitted to Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida, in 2016 due to a severe stomachache. Maya's parents, Jack and Beata Kowalski, faced increasing challenges as Maya's illness remained a mystery, with her symptoms misunderstood and her mother falsely accused of fabricating them for attention. Maya's condition resulted in her being separated from her parents and placed in state custody, a devastating turn of events that intensified their plight. As the Kowalski family fought for a diagnosis and treatment, Beata, a nurse, faced accusations of medical abuse that tragically led to her taking her own life. The documentary offers an intimate look into the Kowalski family's experiences, blending interviews, personal narratives, and surveillance footage from Maya's hospital stays. It presents a powerful portrayal of their struggles, highlighting the need for reform in the healthcare system and the dire consequences of false abuse allegations. In addition to the content within the documentary, further context can be gleaned from the larger issues it highlights. One of the pivotal figures in the story is Dr. Sally Smith of All Children's Hospital, who suspected Maya was a victim of Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a form of child abuse where a parent or guardian exaggerates or fabricates a child's symptoms. This suspicion led to Maya's separation from her parents and her worsening symptoms. In fact, Maya was later diagnosed with complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), a condition characterized by severe pain that may not have a clear cause. But the diagnosis came too late, as Maya faced skepticism and additional restrictions at the hospital. This story exposes the aggressive child-abuse identification system in Florida and a lack of oversight ****************************************************************************************************** By the way, we also have a Podcast! In most of the podcast episodes I've made mention about or been curious as to how the lessons of my guests, from the work they do, can be transferred and imparted on children. It's a two-pronged approach: Beyond repairing what we need to as adults and building from there, how can we prepare the younger generations, providing them the right tools to make their arduous journey through life more efficient? Not easy, but more efficient. Not fewer obstacles or challenges, but smarter work and life habits to tackle them. For this episode, Katie walks me through both her career and the drivers behind her book. As a student athlete and then teacher, she recognized the power of mindset – how you're thinking about your thinking. It was one thing to teach kids what to think, quite another to teach them a mindset and approach with which to handle all of life's challenges and bullshit. I've begun this journey with my own son, working through the 100 tips Katie provides in the journal, each with its lessons, reflections, jokes, and question for parents. And it makes sense that the exercises pull the parents in. For all the lessons we try to teach our kids, most of those we can stand to relearn ourselves. Some highlights from this episode: What the true deciding factor in a coin flip really is Katie, on kids: Why are we not spending this critical time in life teaching them how to center themselves and attract more positive and change their mindset…to not be afraid of failure? Regret is harder than failure, rejection, or anything else. It's like the devil. “A U-Haul doesn't follow a hearse” Mentioned or Applicable Books: Can't Hurt Me: Master Your Mind and Defy the Odds by David Goggins Mindset: The New Psychology of Success by Carol S. Do you do them now, controlling what you can, or put them off and deal with the unknown consequences later? SHARE BELOW! A nature-based practice that embraces diversity, equity, and inclusion, that is accessible, and that is representative of all kinds of people and abilities—this is how to make sure that nature is available to everyone. In today's episode, I'm talking with Mya Zavaleta about the importance of DEI (or IDEAR, as she refers to it) within nature-based practices, ways to increase social accessibility, being open and honest about being inclusive in your practice, and how to engage with communities of a socioeconomic status who might not be able to afford your services. When it comes to IDEAR, one of the most important things you can do, especially as a white person, is truly listen to people in communities that are not your own. Take the time to understand their needs, their history, their desires. Taking small steps to help people feel like they belong in nature yields big rewards. We'll discuss: What diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) means, why representation is important, and why Mya emphasizes inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility (IDEA) Considering social accessibility when it comes to nature-based therapy, and ways to introduce nature to kids who aren't familiar it and get them comfortable in the environment The importance of land acknowledgment (honoring the land and the Native Americans who inhabited it) and inclusive images on your website if you desire to be more inclusive Mya's perspective on the difficulty of socioeconomic inclusion when running a cash-based business, and other ways that she engages with broader communities who are not her clients Why Mya focuses on the resilient promoting aspect of her services The importance of observing, listening, and asking questions as a white person working in communities of color and taking the time to build a relationship of trust Connect with Mya: Mya's website Follow Mya on Instagram Resources from this episode: The Nature Gap: Confronting Racial and Economic Disparities in the Destruction and Protection of Nature in America Birding as a Therapeutic Tool for All Children with Freya McGregor Children & Nature Network Research Digest: Inequitable Access to Nature—Awareness and Action Resource for writing a land acknowledgment statement If you're ready to take the next step in this adventure, join our free Therapy in the Great Outdoors Community at therapyinthegreatoutdoors.com. We've heard a great deal lately about education in America, from discussions about school choice post-COVID restrictions to whether or not curriculum is being developed that helps children learn to succeed at something more than simply activism. Our guest today has a keen interest in all these issues and has written a book called, “Agency: The Four Point Plan (F.R.E.E.) for All Children to Overcome the Victimhood Narrative and Discover Their Pathway to Power” (Templeton Press, 2022). If there were a Mount Rushmore of American Black intellectuals, the three guests on this show would certainly be on it: Glenn Loury is a professor of the social sciences in the Department of economics at Brown, a visiting fellow at the Hoover Institution, and the host of his wildly successful podcast, The Glenn Show. Ian Rowe is the cofounder of Vertex Partnership Academies and the author of the new book Agency: The Four Point Plan (F.R.E.E.) for ALL Children to Overcome the Victimhood Narrative and Discover Their Pathway to Power. Robert Woodson is the founder of the Woodson Center, an organization devoted to “empowering community-based leaders to promote solutions that reduce crime and violence, restore families, revitalize underserved communities, and assist in the creation of economic enterprise.” In this wide-ranging conversation, the three men debunk The 1619 Project, advocate for the restoration of the Black family and the Black church, describe their own very different upbringings and formative experiences, and discuss the many reasons why they are optimistic about the future of Black Americans, despite the narrative commonly expressed in the media. Whoa. Wow. Golly. And Hooray! Big news from SCOTUS today. A fifty year judicial error is finally corrected, and Ricochet's Supreme Court expert John Yoo joins us at the top of the hour to explain. He talks about the unofficial Thomas/Alito court, discusses what this could mean for other landmark cases, along with a few other fresh decisions that, on any other day, would've merited a visit from our good pal Mr. Yoo. Perhaps providentially, we asked AEI fellow and a charter school founder Ian Rowe to join before the news broke. What better time to have someone so committed to giving disadvantaged children a real shot at the good life? Ian's just published his book, Agency: The Four Point Plan (F.R.E.E.) for ALL Children to Overcome the Victimhood Narrative and Discover Their Pathway to Power. He discusses his decision to turn away from the big bucks he could've attained with his Harvard Business degree in favor of taking on the hard work empowering America's youth. The hosts also talk about the country getting back to the exhausting business of American democracy. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This week on High Noon with Inez Stepman, the indefatigable Ian Rowe joins the pod. Rowe is a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and a visiting fellow with the Woodson Center as part of their 1776 Unites project. He is the author of the new book Agency: The Four Point Plan (F.R.E.E.) for ALL Children to Overcome the Victimhood Narrative and Discover their Pathway to Power, and runs a new set of charter schools in the Bronx based on the four cardinal virtues.Ian and Inez discussed how perception and ideology can affect kids' psychology in a very real way, the middle ground between total individualism and a kind of systemic collectivism, and how we can recognize both personal agency and institutional influence on people's life outcomes. They also dig into what to do when those most influential institutions — like family structure, schools, and others, become weak and corrupted — and how those who have found themselves in the thickets of modern life, without the human and civic supports they desperately need, can nevertheless find a pathway to a positive future.--High Noon is an intellectual download featuring conversations that make possible a free society. John McWhorter is back once more for an episode of The Glenn Show, so let’s get into it. I begin by reporting on my current “European Tour.” Last week I spoke at the London School of Economics, and I’m currently headed from Toulouse, France to Marseille to deliver the keynote address at the International Conference on Public Economic Theory. It’s been quite an enlightening experience so far, as I’ve gotten a look at how young black European economists are thinking about inequities within and without their profession. John and I discuss a recent report from the Commission on Race and Ethnic Disparities, which offers a picture of racial disparities in the UK that differs greatly from that of the US. But as John notes, the impression that people abroad have of our problems is often distorted. One of our real problems is our tendency to filter all thinking about race and ethnicity through “blacks and whites.” The US is a much more diverse place that that, and John and I ask how long the concerns of African Americans will determine the national agenda for all “people of color.” Next, John asks a big question: What is the real cause of racial disparities in the commission of violent crime? We know that black perpetrators are responsible for a disproportionate amount of violent crime, but we need to understand why. I gently chide John for missing the recent Old Parkland Conference, but he’s got a good excuse: He was busy recording a series of lectures about the history of the alphabet for the Great Courses! I am utterly fascinated by this project, and I convince John to give us a preview. And finally, I offer a critique of John’s recent column, which addresses school shootings. This one is buoyant and weighty in equal measure. As always, I want to hear your thoughts. Let me know in the comments! This post is free and available to the public. My guest this week is Dr. Mona Delahooke. In this episode, Dr. Mona and I discuss understanding children through the lens of the brain-body connection. Parents, by and large, are often given outdated information, advice, and even strategies about how to navigate challenging behavior and regulation issues with their kids. So today I've invited Dr. Mona back to share with us new insights, updates, strategies from her new book that teaches parents what to ask for or to look for beyond just looking at their child's behavior. It's a guide for how to navigate not only behavior challenges with their children, but also how to get to the root of why they are struggling to regulate their behavior in the first place. Dr. Mona Delahooke is a licensed clinical psychologist with more than 30 years experience caring for children and families. She's a senior faculty member of the Profectum Foundation, and a member of the American Psychological Association. She's the author of Beyond Behavior: Using Brain Science and Compassion to Understand and Solve Children's Behavioral Challenges, and as a frequent speaker, trainer and consultant to parents, organizations, schools and public agencies. Mona lives and works in the Los Angeles area.
