Richard Conniff: Ending Epidemics

In this episode, Therese Markow and Richard Conniff discuss his book "Ending Epidemics," which explores the history of infectious diseases and vaccines. Richard highlights the evolution from ancient humoral theories, which thrived for nearly 2000 years, to modern germ theory, emphasizing the importance of cleanliness and vaccination. He recounts the development of the smallpox vaccine by Edward Jenner and the polio vaccine by Jonas Salk, noting initial resistance and the success of widespread vaccination. He also addresses the current resistance to COVID-19 vaccines, stressing the importance of balancing vaccine risks against disease risks. He also warns of the dangers of withdrawing from global health organizations like the WHO.    Key Takeaways: The Semmelweis Reflex is the tendency of people to stick with what they already believe and ignore clear evidence that it's wrong. Smallpox has been eradicated. In many areas, they were still using Jenner's vaccine, which still worked up until 1980. With some viruses,  illnesses are dormant but can crop up later in life, such as chickenpox and shingles.  Viruses hide in the nervous system When you are thinking about vaccines, think about the disease, and then think about what the relative risk of the vaccine is versus the risk of the disease.   "The problem is that people can develop these imaginary problems with vaccines because they do not have any conception of how awful the disease is that the vaccine is preventing." —  Richard Conniff   Episode References:  Ending Epidemics: A History of Escape from Contagion - https://mitpress.mit.edu/9780262552974/ending-epidemics/ The Species Seekers: Heroes, Fools, and the Mad Pursuit of Life on Earth - https://wwnorton.com/books/9780393341324     Connect with Richard Conniff: Professional Bio: https://mitpress.mit.edu/author/richard-conniff-39217/  Website: https://strangebehaviors.wordpress.com/  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/richard-conniff-9689a02/    Connect with Therese: Website: www.criticallyspeaking.net Threads: @critically_speaking Email: theresemarkow@criticallyspeaking.net      Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. We once again pull out the most popular orchestra leader in my dad's collection. This is a follow-up album to a popular record my dad does not have. Both titles reference the Ira and George Gershwin tune S'Wonderful from the 1927 Broadway musical Funny Face. Of course Conniff arranged all of these standards by using a chorus singing tones and not lyrics, which created his own recognizable style. The Seattle City Council is preparing to take a final vote today on a pair of new laws that city attorney Ann Davison and some city council members say could help the city fight drug trafficking and prostitution. I'm not sure why, but the episodes that feature Ray Conniff music have been among the most popular…by far. Maybe because his music is so enjoyable. Maybe because his music is laid back and brings back memories of better times, or what are assumed to be better times. But Conniff's music had a very unique sound because of how he treated vocals in many of his songs. He used voices as instruments as they sang wordless notes. But on this record? They use their real words. AAAAAAAARRRRRRR MATEY! We're still talking about pirates on the podcast, because there's just too much treasure to dig up here. Today, we're looking at the “sequel” to “Be More Pirate” with the aptly named “How to Be: More Pirate” by our guest today and Alex Barker. Alex graduated from Kings College in 2008 and after pursuing an MA in Conflict Resolution studies, began backpacking around the Middle East which eventually led to her working at Global Citizen, and then came to the Royal Society of Arts as a community manager. Eventually she began freelance writing, where she came upon (last week's guest) Sam Conniff's Be More Pirate, and was inspired to join his team in 2019. Since then, as Conniff described, Alex has gone from his “right hand pirate” to “full time pirate” spearheading the Be More Pirate movement. It led to How to Be: More Pirate, which chronicles the strategies and stories of “modern day pirates” from healthcare workers to startups, and the How To Be: More Pirate Podcast, and to a bona-fide social movement that spans the globe. With looking at lessons from the history of old school pirates, to new modern day “pirates” this is another episode of the podcast you're not going to want to miss, so with that…let's bring it in!

Steve Jobs once said, ‘I'd rather be a Pirate than be in the Navy.' He believed it so much that often, the Skull and Crossbones would be flown at Apple HQ, so what can businesses learn from pirates? Our guest today, Sam Conniff is here to answer that with his book, Be More Pirate.  Sam is a multi-company founder from the UK, starting with Don't Panic London, a creative agency that he founded out of his bedroom when he was 20 years old in 1997. Since then he's gone on to co-found a youth centered marketing agency Livity, and it's sister company Digify Africa, as well as to produce and present content on BBC 4 and Netflix. Sam has gone on to speak and consult with major companies around the world such as Google, Salesforce, Mercedes-Benz, Coca-Cola and more, bringing his insights from over 25 years in the startup world, and lessons learned from those “living on the edges”. During the Golden Age of Piracy, as Sam goes on to uncover in his book, pirate crews were some of the most democratic and diverse teams in the world, where leadership, teamwork, and absolute trust in culture decided whether or not a crew scored some treasure, or sunk to the bottom of the sea. ‘Tis is one of the most unique conversations we've had on the podcast, so with that…let's bring it in!

It is difficult to imagine a not-so-distant past when deadly diseases were a routine part of life. Even more astonishing is the fact that during that time, prevailing medical beliefs attributed these diseases to harmful miasmas, bodily humors, and divine dyspepsia. However, a groundbreaking revelation occurred with the discovery of the world of microorganisms, which led to the understanding that these tiny organisms might be responsible for transmitting and spreading diseases. These pivotal discoveries and understandings paved the way for numerous measures and techniques to prevent the transmission of infectious diseases. The history of epidemics and humanity's progress in combating these diseases is full of captivating stories. In his new book, "Ending Epidemics: A History of Escape from Contagion," prolific author Richard Conniff outlines how our comprehension and prevention of some of the most devastating infectious diseases have advanced, consequently doubling the average life expectancy. In this episode of Bridging the Gaps, I speak with Richard Conniff, delving into moments of inspiration and innovation, decades marked by unwavering determination, and periods of profound suffering that have spurred individuals, institutions, and governments to take action in the pursuit of public health. Richard Conniff is a prolific author of several non-fiction books and many articles for magazines such as National Geographic, Simthsonian, and Time. He is a contributing opinion writer for the New York Times, and a former commentator on NPR's “All Things Considered”. He has won the National Magazine Award. He has also written and presented nature programmes for National Geographic television, the Discovery channel and the BBC. Our conversation begins with an exploration of how communities in old days grappled with epidemics, given their limited understanding of the causes behind such widespread outbreaks. We delve into the intricate ways in which communities tried to comprehend and interpret illnesses before the pivotal discoveries of microorganisms and germs. An engaging segment follows, chronicling the efforts of early pioneers who harnessed the power of microscopes to identify microorganisms believed to be responsible for various diseases. One captivating narrative we explore revolves around the remarkable utilization of cowpox to foster immunity against smallpox—an extraordinary breakthrough in the history of medicine. However, we also address the resistance encountered by these novel ideas and concepts. We then delve into the emergence of the concept of immunity, the discovery of microorganisms, and the subsequent development of vaccines and antibiotics. Additionally, we discuss the profound realization that improved sanitary conditions are indispensable for safeguarding public health. Naturally, our conversation turns towards the recent Covid-19 epidemic, examining humanity's response to this global crisis. Richard offers a significant insight that despite our enhanced capabilities in dealing with epidemics, these formidable diseases persist and may pose future threats if we fail to remain vigilant to the dangers they present. “Don't ever start a food business that you're not insanely passionate about. Because [nothing is] going to justify the hours and the difficulty that you're going to go through starting a food business and building a food business if you're not super passionate about it.” Today's guest is incredibly passionate about health, sustainability, and delicious lobster! Ben Conniff is the Co-Founder and Chief Innovation Officer at Luke's Lobster, an incredible chain of lobster shacks and a grocery line dedicated to producing traceable, sustainable seafood. Twelve and a half years ago, Ben met his business partner, Luke, on Craigslist while looking for a restaurant job. Luke was working in finance, but had previously been a lobsterman and was passionate about starting a Maine-Style lobster shack in New York. Ben was immediately all in and they opened their first restaurant only 30 days later. Their goal for the business was simple: make amazing food, treat people well, and enjoy themselves. They did just that and more.. Ben believes it is the real story of Luke and his family's background in the lobster industry that created the high levels of trust and transparency among their consumers, and of course the delicious lobster, that led to their customers wanting more and more. Kristi and Ben dive into their rapid restaurant expansion and their decision to start a grocery line. We also talk about the importance of educating the consumer and why sustainability is critically important for any new business. “It is a situation where if you're not part of the solution, you are part of the problem, particularly if you're in the food industry.”

Throughout their incredible growth, Luke and Ben's commitment to sustainability and putting stakeholders above profits has earned them customers, accolades and a B Corp certification. As the environmental and coastal fishing communities work towards a more sustainable vision for the future of lobstering, Luke's Lobster is certain to be a key voice working to find consensus to the conversation. Emma hosts Ruth Conniff, editor-in-chief of the Wisconsin Examiner, to discuss her recent book Milked: How an American Crisis Brought Together Midwestern Dairy Farmers and Mexican Workers. Emma also runs through recent news on Palin's loss in Alaska's special election (to Alaska's first Native representative!), Mississippi legislators failing Jackson as it continues to go without running water, Israel's crackdowns on allowing NGOs in Palestine, and Peter Theil and Mitch McConnell bicker over who has to fund their pasty white puppets, Vance and Masters. Ruth Conniff then joins as she dives into the genesis of her study of the agrarian ties between Wisconsin and Mexico, beginning with her move from the former to the latter in the wake of Trump's election, only to discover countless Mexican families in Veracruz who – either themselves or their family members – had spent years on Wisconsin dairy farms. After situating the current state of undocumented labor in the Wisconsin dairy industry (approximately 80% of the labor!), Conniff and Emma explore how this came to be, with neoliberal policies like NAFTA bolstering the preexisting issue of mass-scale corporate farms overtaking family farms across North America, and particularly decimating the family agricultural industry in Mexico, forcing the workers up north to the US. With this migration, small-scale farmers in Wisconsin clamored to bring them in to help with their labor – a form of labor practically rejected by American citizens, and not covered by US Visas as it's considered “low skill” – which brings Ruth to the story of how they found themselves oddly united against these global economic forces of corporatization. Next, Ruth and Emma tackle the contradictions of a state relying on undocumented labor when its representatives are some of the most vitriolic anti-immigrant candidates, resulting in hotbeds of ICE action endorsed by the state that actively oppresses those who make the local businesses function, before wrapping up with a conversation on the future of a path to citizenship that supports programs like DACA and more at-will migration, as well as more industry-specific work visas. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon and Matt as Grayson from Michigan discusses infiltrating the enemy, the crew reflects on the fall off of Timcast (Will of the People >>>), and Andrew from Denver discusses Wisconsin farming and reflects on today's interviews. Ben Shapiro complains about Space Lesbians™, and Fox guest Shawn McBreairty discusses the factual nature of a children's fiction novel about a teen-run junior-talent agency that hires ONE queer kid. Dr. Gus from Florida dives into the misrepresentation of the relationship between undocumented people and their bosses, Dave Rubin discusses why he's different from the other gays, plus, your calls and IMs! Ben Conniff Co-Founder and Chief Innovation Officer at Luke's Lobster started his career almost accidentally by answering a Craig's List ad. The rest you could say is history. Ben's experience as a freelance food journalist, having written for Saveur, GQ, Tasting Table and others certainly gave him a strong background to what customers wanted and what it would take to make Luke's Lobster a name for itself. His ability to be “hands on” in every aspect of the business has been one of the catalysts to their growth. What he has learned and has taught his team is resilience, grit and determination through the highs and lows of running and building a business. Ben works as a leader, as a mentor, as a team player and most importantly as voice of integrity and values as he supports both his and Luke's dream to make Luke's Lobster a name that everyone knows.     What You'll Learn in This Episode:   How a life-long love can become a fulfilling future Why hiring a team with consistent values and work ethic has long term benefits What does “keeping it simple” have to do with a successful business How you can expand your business and maintain integrity What it takes to maintain consistency when major change takes place How growth does not have to mean compromising standards Why risk plays a role in pursuing new ideas How a crisis can force a business to pivot and even expand Why taking the hard path can lead to growth of a business How the food industry must take a look at improvement in order to sustain Why taking a hard look at a businesses footprint from all angles is crucial What steps can be made to make an environmental statement   Bio: Ben Conniff is co-founder and Chief Innovation Officer of Luke's Lobster, an international seafood company and restaurant group based in Maine that opened its first restaurant location in New York in 2009. His business partner Luke Holden came up with the idea for Luke's Lobster while working as an investment banker in Manhattan. Born and raised as a lobsterman in Maine, Luke missed the simple, delicious lobster rolls of his youth while living in the city and saw an opportunity to bring a classic Maine-style roll with better lobster to New Yorkers at a fair price. Luke put an ad on Craigslist for a partner and found Ben, who joined to get the business started while Luke kept his full-time banking job. Their lobster shacks expanded quickly to other US cities and eventually to Japan and Singapore.   In 2013, Luke's opened its own lobster production facility, buying its lobster directly from lobstermen and lobster co-ops and handling it through every painstaking step from ocean to plate. They now bring seafood to guests in their lobster shacks, in branded grocery products around the country, and directly to consumers through their online market. Luke's is a Certified B Corp and credits its success to prioritizing its core values of Taste, Transparency, and Purpose, and its unwavering commitment to supporting its team and stakeholders. Ben was also once a full-time and now a part-time writer, having authored the Luke's cookbook, Real Maine Food, and published in Saveur, GQ, Food52, Smithsonian, Tasting Table, and Yankee Magazine.         Resources: Facebook: www.facebook.com/Luke's Lobster Instagram: www.instagram.com/lukeslobster Linkedin: www.linkedin.com/in/luke's lobster Websites:www.lukeslobster.com

In today's episode, I interview Dr. Jamie Conniff of Duluth, MN. Dr. Conniff is a family physician at Essentia Health and teaches in the Duluth Family Medicine Residency Program. His expertise in both teaching and practicing medicine is with a particular focus on LGBTQ health and for providing gender-affirming healthcare. He has previous research experience on improving access and quality of care for transgender people and is particularly interested in training rural physicians to care for transgender patients. Together we are going to explore gender identity beyond the binary. We will dig into scripture and lean into Dr. Conniff's medical experience when it comes to caring for, and loving our, transgender and non-binary siblings. For so many Christians, I think there's this idea that if you are a person of faith, you cannot believe in science; as if trusting in science somehow goes against “what God says in the Bible” and God's design of creation. So, what happens when we deconstruct our binary way of thinking and take a “both/and” approach to study gender? I invite you into this conversation and challenge you to stay curious. Together, we will explore that there is more nuance and beauty to God's creation than what we ever thought would be possible.

Today I'm super-glad to welcome stand-up and comedy writer Frank Conniff back to the show. Originally from New York, Frank ended up in the midwest  in the19 80s doing stand-up. During this time, he met the future creators of Mystery Science Theater 3000, and was later brought aboard the show during the second season, both as a writer and appearing onscreen as TV's Frank. Since then, Frank's worked on a number of cool projects including Totally Biased, The Jimmy Dore Show, Invader ZIM, Cinematic Titanic and more. This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, follow me on Twitter, and check out my gameshow podcast Snap Impression!
