With a buzzing Zeppelin-style airship disturbing her tranquility and A-list nursing home brochures piling up, life teems with uneasy choices for widowed “Grey Boomer” Helen. She finds companionship in her pet raven, Rabindranath, and solace in gardening and reading the secret journals of her dead wife Coral. Helen daydreams of underwater escapes, an LSD-fuelled respite from reality, as the couple's past activism comes back to haunt them. There are regular, unwelcome visits from the Bureau of Unaustralian Activities. When Rabindranath returns one night splattered with blood, Helen makes a shocking discovery on the harbour shores with headline-making implications.CREDITSTHE NEXT 5 MINUTES is written and directed by Ian Walker, based on the 1990s unpublished novella - Australia Who by Joanne Burns. EAR CANDY Presents: The Next 5 Minutes

Byrone H. Ellis is a politician to match the rottenness of the times. A junior minister in the Free Futures government, he is a self-proclaimed future world dominator who finds himself in a perpetual state of chaos. Amid scandals of elder abuse, a sleepless Byrone juggles media duties and a fresh assignment from his boss Amanda, handling a nuclear waste cover-up and a mass tranquilization program. Past embarrassments, like his infamous brothel scandal, could be offset if only he can keep his shirt on during hologram calls. The day's going well until a call from the US reveals Rufas has taken his family hostage, demanding all his assets in return for their safety. With his world spinning, Byrone collapses during a swanky soiree attended by political and industry insiders. Zilch and Pronto regularly connect via telepathy, bonding over gossip and sharing hardships of their past - from being raised by a hippie mom in a self-destructive cult to losing their parents in a murderous arson. Escaping the city, they join the underground resistance, led by the notorious Rufas, targeting wealthy symbols and politicians. Despite infighting and Pronto's protests, Zilch embarks on a risky intel-gathering mission in Canberra using a "pendant cam" and a fake identity. Her cover is blown and her escape attempt leads to a potentially fatal swim. Has Zilch drowned in the murky artificial waters of Lake Burley Griffin?CREDITSTHE NEXT 5 MINUTES is written and directed by Ian Walker, based on the 1990s unpublished novella - Australia Who by Joanne Burns. Alas, some good news! The Berejiklian government has announced a lifeline for live music and arts organisations punished by snap lockdowns. On Wednesday morning (July 14), New South Wales officials unveiled a $75 million stimulus package for the ailing live and performing arts industries, targeting small-medium businesses and workers “impacted by the cancellation of shows due to current COVID-19 restrictions,” a statement reads. The financial support will be delivered in two phases – immediately and later, to help organisations reschedule dates — and is meant to help venues and the performing arts to “continue paying staff and performers, and provide support for loss of box office income where shows have been affected by Public Health Orders.” Create NSW will administer the funds. Select not-for-profits and commercial organisations will be eligible, including those with “heavy reliance” on box office income, including businesses that were were staging, or prepping performances during the lockdown period, including “some live music venues.” For those who meet the criteria, evidence of performances scheduled, venues and average ticket prices will be required. Late Wednesday, APRA AMCOS, ARIA and PPCA issued a joint-statement welcoming the “much-needed” COVID-19 fighting fund. “First to be fired, last to be hired, delivering immediate Covid-19 financial assistance for artists and music industry businesses will be a critical lifeline to our industry right now as many artists, venues and events face the complete loss of income for the foreseeable future,” comments Dean Ormston, APRA AMCOS Chief Executive. “We look forward to working with both governments to ensure ongoing support is delivered where it's needed most.” “ARIA and PPCA wholeheartedly welcome any government support in this highly destabilising time and it is encouraging to see the cultural and economic contribution of Australian music recognised,” adds Annabelle Herd, ARIA and PPCA Chief Executive Office. “This is a great start, but as the situation continues to unfold we need to ensure adequate support is provided across all sectors of Australian music, and of course we need to find sustainable ways to reopen, rebuild and grow.” The cash couldn't have come at a better time. With federal handouts ending in March, and Sydney facing the prospect of a lengthy, miserable lockdown due to the spread of the highly infectious Delta variant, money is tight for performers. Miriam caught up with Steph Papas on OneSpaceLove, sharing about her journey, and how she came to birth her latest album and new release "Infinite We Are " a celebration of our own imagination. “A thing of intoxicating beauty.” Rhythms magazine (Miriam) has a knack for giving her songs a feeling of significance, even while they float with effervescent pop pleasure.“ The Music “Her songs are beautifully melodic, richly textured but can have pointed themes…. Simply brilliant" 4.5 stars, Jeff Glorfeld, The Age African influences blend seamlessly with blues-infused melodies and soaring vocal harmonies in the music by Sydney singer song-writer Miriam Lieberman. Her albums are soulful collections of stories, beautifully told through strings, African kora and Lieberman's unmistakable voice. The stories speak of Lieberman's musical journey, which has taken her from Guinea and Mali, where she studied the kora – a west-African harp with a beautiful, evocative tone – to central India, Indonesia, Mexico and South America. These places have left an imprint on Lieberman's musical style as well as a catchiness and contemporary tone that is entirely her own. The Miriam Lieberman Trio is a combination of players, adding luscious vocal harmonies and soaring string arrangements. Regular members of the trio are Lara Goodridge (Baby et Lulu, FourPlay) on violin and harmonies, Susie Bishop (an opera singer and member of Chaika and guest for other bands) also on violin and harmonies, Carl St Jacques (Miami Symphony) on viola. Earliest member of the trio with Miriam was Kate Adams on cello. Miriam is a multiple awardee of grants such as the John Butler Seed grant, Australia Council, Create NSW, APRA, Music NSW and the Australian Songwriters Association Award. She has regularaly featured at festivals around Australia including Woodford, The National Folk Festival (as the NSW showcase act), Fairbridge (WA), Yungaburra Folk Festival (QLD), Shir Madness, Blue Mountains Music Festival, Four Winds Festival, The Multicultual Festival (Canberra), Paramasala (Parramatta), Cygnet (TAS), Denmark Festival Of Voices (WA) and many more. Internationally, she has featured at The Guinean Jazz Festival, Hakodate World Music Festival (Japan), Voix des Femmes (Mali) and The Bali Spirit Festival. “Something of a renaissance woman ……Somehow she achieves the almost impossible in blending patterned western-ed pop writing with the earthy mystique of African rhythms and freaky world instruments.” - Sydney City News

So could quotas work to create a more culturally diverse arts sector? This was a hot topic at the Beyond Tick Boxes symposium in 2017 with an animated panel discussion that we recorded live and nicknamed "Where are the teeth?".
