213. History Unfolding: Gender Ideology as Civilizational Warfare with Matt Osborne

You Must Be Some Kind of Therapist

Play Episode Listen Later May 11, 2026 100:50

Today I welcome back conflict historian Matt Osborne for his third appearance on the show — and our first since meeting in person at the Genspect conference in Albuquerque. Matt writes at The Distance Magazine, reviews books for Genspect, and brings a perspective to the gender critical movement that almost no one else in our space has: the long view of someone trained to study why human beings fight, kill, and build civilizations — and why they sometimes destroy them. What is a military historian doing in this fight? Matt's answer takes us from a pivotal conversation with a tenured professor about sex difference and primitive warfare, to his realization that gender ideology and the ideologies that drive war are operating from the same playbook — what he calls "activist mysticism," the belief that saying the right magical words can bend reality to your will. From there we cover an enormous amount of ground: how transgender ideology hollows out a nation's ability to defend itself, why pacifism makes you less safe rather than more, Ibn Khaldun's cycle of hard times and soft men, the role of ideology in giving people permission to commit violence, and why Hollywood's "girl boss" era has gutted franchise after franchise by erasing sex difference. We talk about Audrey Hale, Pol Pot, World War II rifleman training, Brazilian jujitsu, Project Hail Mary, Outlander vs. Bridgerton, and Thucydides' three causes of war — fear, honor, and interest. We close on what gives Matt hope: kids who are voluntarily turning back toward analog things, tabletop games, paper books, and the old idea that you go outside until dinner. The questions this conversation aims to explore: What happens to a civilization that can no longer defend itself? Why does ideology — any ideology — eventually end in violence? And is it possible to win this fight without losing what makes us human in the process?Matt Osborne is a US Army veteran and a former Democrat. He was featured in a 2020 documentary by Andrew Rossi called “After Truth”. The documentary is about his outsider campaign in the 2017 Alabama special senate election that sent Doug Jones to Washington. Matt left the party over gender identity politics in 2018. Since then, he has earned a master's degree in military history and become an outspoken critic of gender identity politics. He is a book reviewer for Genspect and he has three websites. He covers transgender issues at The Distance Magazine.-The Distance Magazine — gender critical writing -Polemology — the study of war  -Osborne Ink — politics, culture, and everything outside gender and warFollow Matt on X @OsborneInk, @PolemologyFix, and @DistMag.[00:00:00] Start[00:08:28] Marx As Mystic And The Roots Of Ideology[00:10:25] How Gender Ideology Hollows Out The Military[00:17:24] Is Vs. Alabama became the latest state in that fight on Friday when Republicans approved plans for new primary elections pending a court decision on whether those newly drawn GOP House districts can be used in the November midterm elections. Chaotic scenes erupted at the Alabama Statehouse as a protester was dragged from the packed House gallery by security officers. Tensions also ran high in the Tennessee state capitol this week where protesters were removed from hearings over proposed congressional maps that overwhelmingly favored Republicans. The protests did not prevent Republican lawmakers from enacting a new map that abolishes the state's only majority-Black district. Governor Bill Lee signed the new map into law the same day. Tennessee House Representative Justin J. Pearson and  Former Alabama Sen. Doug Jones join The Weekend to discuss how Republicans in their respective states are striping away Black voting power. Rod Blackhurst is a filmmaker, director, and producer whose work spans documentary, narrative, and horror. He made his narrative feature debut with Here Alone, winner of the Audience Award at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival, and later returned to Tribeca with Blood for Dust (2023), starring Scoot McNairy and Kit Harington. He also co-directed and produced the Emmy-nominated Netflix documentary Amanda Knox. He also co-created The White Room, a Blood List script later acquired by Amblin, and co-wrote the story for Blumhouse's Night Swim, which grew out of the 2014 short film he made with Bryce McGuire. Rod also directed and served as showrunner for Peacock's John Wayne Gacy: Devil in Disguise and directed on National Geographic's Welcome to Earth with Will Smith. His latest film, Dolly, is a beautifully shot 16mm slasher that evokes the grime and menace of early horror classics while carving out its own identity. In this episode, Rod and I talk about his path into filmmaking, the realities of getting indie films made, and the making of Dolly. Please enjoy this conversation with Rod Blackhurst.Key TakeawaysWear your influences openly, but metabolize and integrate them.Rod talks about The Texas Chain Saw Massacre as a major influence, and it is really clear when you see the movie, but he is careful not to recreate it in a way that feels like blatant homage. The useful principle is that inspiration works best when it is absorbed into the DNA of the film and filmmaker rather than pasted on top of it as a wink. As a result, the movie feels like it takes place in the same world as these influences instead of attempting to overtly acknowledge or recreate them, which can take viewers out of the movie.Investor trust is built with transparency.Rod is one of the most financially responsible filmmakers I have spoken to. His financing advice is unusually concrete. He informs investors how the equity works, how they might recoup, what the timeline is, and acknowledges the very real risk that they could lose all their money. He also shows prior accounting and distribution sheets to demonstrate his own personal track record, treating his career like a business, which it is. That mindset treats filmmaking as entrepreneurship, not just art, and it is one of the most practical pieces of advice in the conversation.Cast the person who can give the monster a soul.Rod found Max the Impaler through wrestling and quickly realized he had found more than a physical presence. Max's background as a largely nonverbal performance artist made them perfect to play Dolly, the slasher, and their emotional investment transformed the character into something much richer than what was on the page. Think about David Howard Thornton and Doug Jones. A monster is not just a costume and makeup job; it comes down to the soul of the performer.Show NotesMovies MentionedDollyThe Texas Chain Saw MassacreThe Evil DeadBlood for DustSnow White (1937/1938 animated film)The VanishingHigh TensionMartyrsBarbarianNight SwimUndertoneIt (via the Bill Skarsgård / Pennywise discussion)Castle in the SkyThe Iron GiantE.T. the Extra-TerrestrialProject Hail MaryMarty SupremeBackroomsObsessionHere AloneFollow Rod Blackhurst at:IMBd: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm2060444/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rodblackhurst/X (Twitter): https://x.com/rodblackhurstVimeo: https://vimeo.com/rodblackhurstWebsite: https://www.rodblackhurst.com/

When he was missioned to Beirut last fall, Fr. Doug Jones, a recently ordained Jesuit priest, expected to spend his time conducting research and administering sacraments.  But since the beginning of Israel's war with Hezbollah on March 2, Fr. Jones finds himself scanning social media for air strike warnings and handing out towels to migrants and other displaced people living in his parish church.  Israel has been intensifying its attacks on Lebanon for more than one month, and has made no secret of its ambitions to invade and eventually annex the southern part of the country.  Meanwhile more than twelve hundred Lebanese have been killed and one million have been displaced—a growing humanitarian catastrophe with no end in sight.  On this episode, Fr. Jones speaks from Beirut with associate editor Griffin Oleynick about the war in Lebanon, and how he and the Church there have responded.  For further reading:  The editors condemn Trump's war on Iran Joseph Amar on Christianity in the Middle East Zeead Yaghi explains the economic toll of Lebanese sectarianism

He's actually a secretary posing as nobility while managing a royal jewels exhibit.AIR DATE & NETWORK FOR A SUITE HOLIDAY ROMANCEDecember 13 2025 | Hallmark ChannelCAST & CREW OF A SUITE HOLIDAY ROMANCEJessy Schram as SabrinaDominic Sherwood as IanBRAN'S A SUITE HOLIDAY ROMANCE SYNOPSISWe learn about the Cordelia books by Hazel Holly, a beloved series that has been read by many and adored by all. We meet Sabrina, a writer who penned a glowing piece about the books. As a result, she's chosen to ghostwrite a memoir and is put up at the Grand Fairbanks Hotel in the legendary Cordelia Suite — a very big deal. She meets Grayson Westcott, the man who hired her. She'll be interviewing him about his life as an art broker and writing his memoir, but she only has until Christmas Eve to gather everything she needs. One night, while working late, Sabrina craves a sandwich. She calls down to the bar, runs in, and starts eating the first sandwich she sees — which turns out to belong to Ian, who's sitting nearby. He doesn't mind at all and clearly wants to keep talking, but the bar is closing. Maybe another time. The next day, Sabrina continues interviewing Grayson and learns that he was once Hazel Holly's butler at this very hotel. He's hesitant to talk about that part of his life, but when he opens up, she's completely captivated.Later, she runs into Ian again and they grab coffee. He tells her he works for a charity and that it's his first time in the city. What Sabrina doesn't know is that he actually works for the royal family — something he's keeping very quiet. After overhearing a conversation at dinner, she mistakenly assumes he is royalty. Could he be Lord Braxton? She keeps her suspicions to herself as they continue spending time together and sparks fly.Ian suddenly has to leave town to make sure Lord Braxton doesn't marry a woman he just met. They reunite at the Christmas ball, where they dance and share a magical evening — until Ian notices Lord Braxton leaving early and has to follow him. He does return for a kiss first, though. Sabrina is both smitten and increasingly frustrated by how Ian disappears without warning. For various reasons, Sabrina never quite asks him outright if he's Lord Braxton, and Ian never tells her that he works for the royal family. When she joins him at a charity event, she's having a great time — until she spots a jewelry box in his bag. Lord Braxton is known for proposing quickly… is Ian about to propose to her?During a dinner date, Sabrina finally admits she thinks he's Lord Braxton — but before Ian can explain, he's called away again. After hearing more of Grayson's story, Sabrina decides to end things before Ian can break her heart. Grayson is baffled and basically says, “How on earth did you get that from my story?!”Sabrina attends a gala and finally learns the truth: Ian is not Lord Braxton. Overwhelmed, she storms out. After more conversations with Grayson, he encourages her to rethink everything.Speaking of Grayson, Sabrina reunites him with his long-lost love, Charlotte — who is Lady Braxton. Grayson insists he's too old for love, but Sabrina shuts that down immediately. They rush to see each other, and it's beautiful.Sabrina races to find Ian, but she's told he's already left for the airport — except he hasn't. He stayed because he's fallen for her. He gives her the jewelry box, revealing not an engagement ring, but a snowflake necklace. They talk things through, make up, and he tells her he's moving to the States to expand the charity. They kiss — big ones. The movie ends with Grayson and Lady Braxton getting married. At their wedding, we see that Ian and Sabrina are engaged. She talks with Grayson more and he encoruages her to think about things a bit more. Speaking of Grayson, she ends up finding Grayson his long lost love charlotte. she's lady braxton. he's like oh i know that, but i'm too old for this ish. She's like NO! You're never too old for love. They rush down to see each other and it's wonderful. And Sabrina rushes to find Ian. But she's too late. He's already left for the airport. Except, HE NEVER LEFT! He says he's fallen for her and then he gives her the jewlery box...it's not an engagement ring at all. It's a snowflake necklace. they talk and make up. he tells her he's moving there to bring the charity to the states. and they kiss big ones! The movie ends with Grayson and Lady Braxton getting married. Frankenstein is a 2025 American Gothic science fiction film produced, written, and directed by Guillermo del Toro, based on the 1818 novel by Mary Shelley. The film stars Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi as the Creature, with Mia Goth and Christoph Waltz in supporting roles. The story follows the life of Frankenstein, an egotistical scientist whose experiment in creating new life results in dangerous consequences.Del Toro had long imagined a faithful Frankenstein film as a "dream project". This was initially in development for Universal Pictures, with del Toro casting frequent collaborator Doug Jones as the Creature, and Bernie Wrightson being considered for the monster's design. However, Universal suspended the project in relation to its planned Dark Universe franchise. Netflix revived the project in 2023, with Elordi instead portraying the Creature. Filming took place from February to September 2024. Wrightson had died in 2017, and the illustrated compilation Bernie Wrightson's Frankenstein was a key inspiration for the film's look.Frankenstein premiered at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival on August 30, 2025. It had a limited theatrical release in the United States from October 17 and was globally released on November 7 on Netflix. The film received generally positive reviews from critics. Both the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute named it as one of the top ten films of 2025. It received five nominations at the 83rd Golden Globe Awards, including Best Motion Picture – Drama.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59
