Education access, financial barriers, and limited career awareness continue to slow the pipeline of new dental assistants entering the workforce. At the same time, patient demand keeps growing, putting more pressure on clinical teams. Organizations like PDS Health are actively working to close this gap through scholarships, mentorship, externship opportunities, and structured career development programs designed specifically for dental assistants. The conversation also explores how Dental Support Organizations create pathways for advancement beyond chairside roles, opening doors in leadership, recruiting, marketing, and clinical specialization. Real experiences and professional insight highlight the skills that matter most today including resilience, communication, and long term career vision, offering a grounded look at both the challenges and the solutions shaping the future of dental assisting. What dental assistants really want from their careers might surprise most practices. Imagine walking into a room with hundreds of dental assistants and asking them what matters most at work. The answers reveal a powerful pattern about growth, recognition, and having a real voice in the practice. Dental assistants shared that they love helping patients and keeping everything running smoothly, but they also want feedback, appreciation, and clear opportunities to elevate their careers. Simple ideas like personal business cards, public recognition, and meaningful appreciation during Dental Assistant Recognition Week can transform how valued they feel. The conversation also highlights why earning and maintaining a CDA credential matters for validation, confidence, and higher pay, showing that investing in professional development can change how assistants see themselves and how others see their value in the practice. What if the future of dentistry is already sitting inside your practice and your assistant is the one who unlocks it? Digital dentistry brings speed, confidence, and opportunity into the practice by allowing assistants to create appliances in house, reduce wait times, and deliver same day solutions patients can trust. Scanning and 3D printing streamline workflows, improve patient communication, and give teams pride in providing high quality care without relying solely on outside labs. Through education like DDAA and the Digital Dental Assistant Academy, assistants gain hands-on training, build real confidence with technology, and step into expanded roles that support the entire practice, creating smoother days, stronger outcomes, and a future focused approach to dentistry. Most dental bite problems are not caused by difficult patients or complex cases. They happen because the bite is rarely measured. In this episode of the Dental Assistant Nation podcast, we explore how accurate bite measurement can completely change patient outcomes and day to day efficiency in the dental practice. Kevin Henry sits down with prosthodontist Dr. Robert Kerstein to explain why traditional bite adjustment methods rely heavily on guesswork and why articulating paper alone cannot measure bite force or timing. Dr. Kerstein shares decades of clinical experience using computerized bite analysis and explains how objective data leads to more precise adjustments, fewer post treatment visits, and greater patient comfort. The conversation highlights the important role dental assistants play in recognizing unresolved bite issues, supporting better diagnostic tools, and helping practices move toward more efficient and predictable care. This episode offers practical insight into how measuring the bite improves treatment results, strengthens patient trust, and supports long term oral health. Dental assistants work under constant pressure, expected to stay focused, calm, and precise while caring for patients and supporting the dental team. Over time, this demanding pace often leads to stress, physical pain, mental exhaustion, and burnout, especially when dental assistants put everyone else first and ignore their own health. This conversation explores why burnout is so common in dental assisting and how daily stress builds when self-care is treated as optional instead of necessary. It covers practical ways dental assistants can manage stress, protect their physical and mental health, and build simple daily habits around sleep, movement, nutrition, emotional awareness, and boundaries. It also shares quick techniques that can be used during the workday to reduce stress and support long-term career sustainability. What is a call? How does a person know if God is calling them to mission service? Join in a discussion as these and other questions are addressed.
Low resource settings require much innovation and streamlining resources to meet set goals. With healthcare becoming more commercial and profit driven, missional healthcare in low resource settings faces many challenges. Sustainability is a big question with people finance , and equipment scarce and hard to come by. Missional models of healthcare often run into hurdles of sustainability, longevity and relevance even as healthcare slowly turns into business. In this setting of multifactorial challenges and increasing compliances how can missional healthcare be relevant and sustainable? Many saints of God have committed their lives to fulfil this great commission in some of the most underserved and unreached areas of the world. With the birth of Emmanuel Hospital Association (EHA) a different model of missional healthcare emerged in India. Over the last 55 years of its existence, EHA has shown that through all the challenges, this may be one of the ways to sustain missional healthcare in areas of need. With increasing divide between the rich and poor, overwhelmed government systems, a ruthless insurance system, and high end corporate healthcare, it is still possible for missional healthcare to provide low cost, high quality, technologically advanced care to people in need while remaining sustainable. We bring lessons from India and our experience with Emmanuel Hospital Association over the last 3 decades.

When stress hormones surge for long periods, they disrupt digestion, slow metabolism, and increase inflammation making bloating, constipation, cravings, and low energy far more likely. Chronic stress throws off gut–brain communication, leaving you feeling foggy, tired, and hungrier than usual, especially for high-sugar comfort foods. Supporting your body with high-fiber snacks, healthy fats, protein, and magnesium-rich foods can help stabilize blood sugar and calm your nervous system. Simple daily habits like mindful eating, journaling, and nourishing your body with gut-supportive nutrients make a significant difference in how you digest, recover, and handle life's pressures. This episode breaks down the real reason stress impacts your digestion and what you can do today to relieve bloating and feel better from the inside out. The shocking discovery of blood-stained surgical tools at a Colorado hospital is a wake-up call for every dental practice. When sterilization falls behind, even briefly, safety can break down fast and dentistry faces the same risks, especially with short staffing, rushed schedules, and inconsistent infection control habits. In this episode, Kevin Henry and infection control expert Mary Govoni, CDA, RDH, discuss how incidents like this happen and why dental teams must stay alert. They talk through common failures in instrument processing, gaps in PPE use, and how post-pandemic complacency has led to rising safety concerns in many practices. Mary explains the importance of proper onboarding, reliable training, and strong infection control routines especially as respiratory illnesses surge and demands on clinical teams increase. She also addresses often-missed issues such as waterline testing and how dental assistants can identify red flags and advocate for safer practices. Behind every confident smile sits a team that makes it possible … but what happens when the stress behind the dental chair becomes too much? In this episode, we dive into the unspoken side of dental assisting, including the office politics, burnout, and emotional strain that can quietly erode morale in a practice. This episode takes a candid look at what it's really like to be on the dental assistant side of dentistry. From the moment you walk into a new office, you can sense the energy and when that energy turns toxic, it doesn't just affect the team, it affects patient care too. We explore how toxic workplace dynamics, bullying, and lack of communication can make even the most passionate assistants question their worth. You'll hear first-hand insight about recognizing when an office environment isn't right for you, overcoming the fear of leaving, and rediscovering your value in a field that too often overlooks the emotional toll of the job. Most importantly, we talk about how dental assistants can help build morale fostering compassion, understanding, and teamwork so that every member of the dental team, from front desk to doctor, works together for the greater good. Because dentistry isn't just about teeth it's about people. And when the people behind the chair are cared for, the care they give shines even brighter. What if I told you the secret to a truly seamless dental team isn't about skill, it's about connection? When the front and back office move together as one, everything changes. Genuine communication and trust turn daily routines into a smooth, consistent flow that patients can feel the moment they walk in. Every handoff, every small exchange, shapes how comfortable and confident a patient feels in your care. It's not about titles or tasks, it's about teamwork. When barriers fade and connection takes over, the entire practice runs with ease, creating an experience that feels effortless for both the team and the patient. Did you know hand-foot-and-mouth disease can knock an adult out for a week? Kevin Henry welcomes infectious disease and compliance expert Joyce Weeks of Dental Ed for a timely conversation on keeping dental teams safe as school is back in session and community bugs resurface. Joyce shares her journey from HIV vaccine research to teaching dental professionals about OSHA and infection control, and why understanding the “why” behind safety protocols makes all the difference. She explains how easily illnesses like hand-foot-and-mouth or measles can spread through carriers who don't even show symptoms, and why dental teams must remain vigilant long after the COVID era. From simple handwashing habits at home to choosing the right level of mask in the operatory, Joyce makes clear how small actions can protect not only dental assistants but also their families, patients, and communities. The discussion dives into the reality of what happens when a visibly sick patient shows up for treatment and how regulations differ by state. Joyce highlights the ethical and safety challenges of balancing production goals with protecting vulnerable people, and offers practical ways teams can respond without fearmongering. Through it all, she emphasizes that vigilance isn't about overreacting, but about working together to safeguard health inside and outside the office. Whenever you talk to a dentist about what they can do to improve their practice, you always hear things like drive more growth by adding new patients, improve your overall departments, etc. But you rarely ever hear a dentist talk about empowering their dental assistants. On this episode of “The Art of Dental Finance and Management with Art Wiederman, CPA” Art visits with the founder of Dental Assistant Nation, Kevin Henry. Kevin talks about why Dentists do not spend more time empowering their Dental assistants, why it is so important for them to feel important in the practice, and why they can make or break a treatment plan proposed by the Dentist. Kevin gives advice on what questions to ask a prospective employee applying for a job as a dental assistant, what type of a training program a Dental office should have for a new Dental assistant, what resources there are to find out what procedures Dental Assistants can and cannot perform in a particular state, and how and why it is important for the Dental Assistant to get involved in the office's digital workflow (i.e. CAD CAM, Digital Printing, Digital Scanning, etc.). It is very important for our listeners to pay more attention to the Dental Assistants in their offices as they are a key component of the Dentist's success.About the Guests Kevin HenryKevin Henry is the founder of Dental Assistant Nation.
