EPISODE SUMMARY Devi Ward Erickson, author, podcast host, and Founder of the Institute of Authentic Tantra Education, describes how orgasm can lead you to enlightenment, altered bliss states can dissolve painful truama, and how non-dualistic practices overlap with anti-racist consciousness. It's no wonder this powerful goddess has managed to be the first and only government-accredited institute teaching Tantra thus far. So tune in and fall in love with Devi Ward Erikson.IN THIS EPISODE:Devi describes the true goal of tantra yoga and what every seeker should know before choosing a neo-tantra teacher. You'll discover that the five elements of this tradition - earth, water, fire, air, and space are an antidote to one of the five root poisons of human emotion: anger, attachment, pride, jealousy, and ignorance. You'll hear stories of students completely shut down from orgasm, go through Devi's 5 element healing process and completely recover their pleasure that for years has been numbed out.Enlightenment is summed up by the experience of bliss, equanimity, openness, clarity, and joy, and to have that look a little closer at how far you can extend those orgasms. Neo-Tantra, developed in the West, has little to do with what was taught in India. Often portrayed as shady, occult, and perverse, tantra has often been characterized and classified as “black magic”. The Kama Sutra , an ancient court textbook that was used as a guide to sexual and marital affairs, further distorted the perception of tantric practices. Consequentially, the Western public came to see tantra as being synonymous with the guidance in the Kama Sutra – particularly with its detailed descriptions of various physical positions for sexual intercourse. Even after a shift in tantric teachings occurred over time, the connection between sexuality and spirituality is what mainly fascinated the Western culture. Tantra increasingly became seen as an “ecstasy cult” with a positive attitude towards the physical body and everything worldly. This is how the term “tantra” came to be a synonym for ritual eroticism, spiritually oriented sexual practices, or sacred sexuality. However, Authentic Tantra ® is a trauma-informed holistic healing modality designed to awaken, heal, and integrate body, mind, spirit, and sex... Authentic Tantra ® is medicine.About Devi:Devi Ward Erickson is the curator of the Authentic Tantra ® modality and an accomplished Vajrayana Tantra Practitioner. She is a trauma survivor who has overcome sexual, emotional, physical and racial abuse through Tantric sexual and non-sexual practice. Devi was a stripper in Detroit for several years while she attended Wayne State University for the performing arts. At the age of 24, she became a monk of the Ishaya order and dedicated her life to her spiritual path. Nine years later, Devi was introduced to Vajrayana Tantric Buddhism and trained in the Tibetan Five Element healing practices as a sexual and non-sexual healing method.Since then Devi has become an internationally recognized Tantra Expert, Certified Tantric Healer, and ACS Certified Sexologist. In 2015 Devi completed a 53 hour Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Advocacy Counselor training. Her background includes certification in Reiki and meditation. Devi has a hell of a story. She is the founder of The Institute of Authentic Tantra Education, but her journey to this incredible educational platform was by way of housekeeping, then stripping, getting heavily into the rave scene, then transitioning to monkhood and ultimately finding her place amongst the most important teachers of authentic tantra in North America...if not the world! At one point in the interview, she shares the bliss that many of us have experienced through MDMA, then later found that she could achieve this same bliss - LASTING bliss - from within through focused meditation and tantric principles. Ever wondered what tantra means, exactly? You're not alone. If you picture a bunch of people having a massive sex orgy, or a married couple attempting to spice up their sex life with tantra, you're also not alone. When it comes to sex, dating, and relationships, conscious sexual expression is often something to which we aspire but don't always attain. It turns out tantra has a lot more to it than what you might think -- it could be the gateway to profound transformation not only in relationship, but to unlocking your own vibrant, individual aliveness.

Beloveds! We are joined this week again by the incredible Brittany Policastro. Brittany calls in the beauty and potent healing that can be found in ordinary moments. She and Sophia can often be found performing elaborate rituals and those will always have their vital role in healing this world, but there is just as much rich energy in washing dishes when that is the aligned move. These two talk about polyamory and the freedoms it provides as well as the mental reframing that many of us need to do when entering into such spacious agreements. This episode has the ease of two old friends catching up, because that's what it is. But when those two old friends are such incredible healing powerhouses, we all benefit from listening in. This conversation is raw and ripe with personal sharing. Do you know that "breakup" "heartache" Sophia keeps making reference to without talking about? She finds space and support to share the dish on it in this episode. Get cozy, or pumped, or anything in between, maybe you'll find the exquisite ordinary in your own life as you listen to this sweet episode! In this episode I’m joined by Courtney Garner, she’s a certified tantrika with training in the Tibetan 5 Element Healing system taught by one of my heroines and previous podcast guests Devi Ward. She shares her story of transcendence from an unsatisfactory relationship and talks about her professional integration of East and West, having a background as a nurse practitioner before becoming a sexual and spiritual healer and educator. She shares some heart warming success stories of working with clients who have been able to radically improve their love, sex, and spiritual lives with her help. We discuss the how and why of semen retention and get into some edgy territory around female empowerment, spiritual sisterhood, and the ways men will need to “man up” on a new level to catch up with the rapid rate of sexual consciousness evolution among independent women who are claiming their power. Please visit her website at: https://www.absolutetantra.com/ About Courtney: I’m a fun-loving Practitioner who’s great at laying it out so you get it! Helping clients find practical ways to integrate the practice and make it work, is my priority. I frequently work with men on issues like porn addiction, sexual dysfunction, and disconnection. Speaking of Partnership: Personal Stories of the Power and Payoffs of Partnership
Devi is an internationally recognized Tantra Expert, Certified Tantric Healer, Certified Reiki Practitioner, Certified Meditation Instructor, practicing Tibetan Buddhist and one of the first Westerners qualified to teach the Tibetan Five Element Tantric practices as part of a sexual healing modality. She has been featured as a Tantra and Female Sexuality Expert in countless articles and over 30 different radio and television networks world-wide including Playboy Radio, Men’s Health Magazine, CBS, NBC and Rogers TV. Guiding Principle, Quote or Mantra The only thing that’s ever going on are feelings and needs. If we can understand what the need is that is how we connect with the Divinity and the humanity in all of us. When You Tripped Up Devi had a student in one of her classes who was blatantly racist. And as a woman of color, she was really struggling with it. And in a moment of pain she said something quite crass and this student was devastated. This experience has helped Devi be mindful of what she says, especially in moments of pain. Ultimately it ended up being a beautiful healing moment. The “DUH” moment that changed your partnerships forever There was a woman in Devi’s world that just rubbed her the wrong way. This woman reflected to Devi the areas she still needed to love and embrace and accept about herself, because she had a story that this woman was better than her in some way. So this woman triggered the part in Devi that didn't feel good enough. And she wanted to make it about this woman. Her “DUH” moment was when she realized that she had a need for self worth, self acknowledgement and self-celebration. This ended up being an opportunity to do the work of healing her own wound as opposed to blaming somebody else for simply showing it to her. How is Tantra medicine to heal? The Five Elements Tantric practices are ancient practices. The five elements are - earth, water, fire, air and space. And this is what makes up our physical reality. These elements are considered the antidote to the root poisons of anger, attachment, pride, jealousy and ignorance. These emotions literally are toxic and create disease in the body. Bringing the elements into balance are essential to the health of the energy body. And all physical maladies manifest first in the energy body before showing up in the physical body. These practices literally heal the energy and physical bodies. What is the best partnership / relationship advice you have ever received? You cannot give empathy if you need empathy. I will be talking with Devi Ward about some steamy topics such as tantric breathing, “sexercises”, the 4 forms of sensual pleasure and what all of this means for women's self-empowerment and healing..just to name a few of the topics that are on the table. Devi Ward is a pioneer in the field of Women's Sexual Empowerment and the author of “Shake Your Soul-Song! A Woman's Guide to Self-Empowerment Through The Art Of Self-Pleasure.” She is Certified in a vast wealth of specializations including Tantric healer, Authentic Tantra Education and Co-Founder of Authentic Tantra Sexual Education. Devi often works with women who have a deep desire to know themselves more intimately. They realize that their sexuality is “missing” something and that there is more to be experienced. Devi's work focuses on how women can reclaim their sensual pleasure from a place of personal power (and how this very pleasure can become a powerful healing tool).
You might want to stop calling it masturbation because the word masturbation literally means "to disturb with the hand." Devi Ward calls it "the art of self pleasure." What's wrong with touching your own pleasure parts? Absolutely nothing, as long as it's private or consensual, and it's good for you. In fact, not only does pleasure, especially sexual pleasure, have a number of physiological benefits, but it can heal emotional trauma as well! In her book, "Shake Your Soul-Song!: A Woman's Guide To Self-Empowerment Through The Art Of Self-Pleasure" Devi Ward describes how taking time for pleasure every day can transform your life. Also, the amount of time you take is important too, this is not about "getting it over with." She'll describe the difference between climax and orgasm, and why it's essential to more pleasure. Also, we'll talk about the importance of relaxation and the parasympathetic nervous system in health and well-being. (Thanks to Fields of Heather for this photo of Devi.) What about those "guilty pleasures" like ice cream? Is there a way to transform the experience to make it both more pleasurable and not "guilty?" There's a simple key here, and if you want to guess it starts with an "A."Learn how pleasure can be a path to healing and empowerment on this episode of Sexploration with Monika.
