Discipline, as in, the discipline it takes to do something regularly, consistently and habitually - even when you don't want to - for the sake of results you want. So this morning's meditation will help you relax, focus and call in the discipline you desire.

CONSISTENCY – Stay consistent by writing down your goals, getting really clear on what it is you want. It's easy to get sidetracked when you are trying to stick to one thing. You need to FOCUS though, you've probably heard the acronym FOCUS – Follow one course until success. Stick to it and know what it is you are working towards.DISCIPLINE – Discipline is about setting yourself up for success by making the tasks you want to complete as easy as possible. It's partly about will power and partly about making smart decisions. In order to remain disciplined you want to do the following:1. Make your choices in advance, reduce decision fatigue2. Remove temptation, make it easy to be disciplined3. Make it who you are4. Measure your progress and successes, along with your failures. 5. Eat the frog first, mark twain said: "If it's your job to eat a frog, it's best to do it first thing in the morning. If it's your job to eat two frogs, it's best to eat the biggest one first." Do the hard things first and everything else will be easy. 6. Trick yourself into your discipline7. Find an accountability partner8. "People often say that motivation doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing - that's why we recommend it daily." - Zig Ziglar. Don't be too hard on yourself if you fail, remember, tomorrow is another chance to do better.Don't be the person who looks, dreams, and never acts, be the person who looks, dreams, and achieves.

My life has changed drastically, has yours? I think we all have BECOME something we didn’t think we would have become 2 months ago. You have BECOME a virtual employee You have BECOME a homeschool teacher and a full time virtual employee which automatically means you have BECOME a professional juggler. Working, cooking, cleaning, all while you teach your kids math. Scary. Now most of us have BECOME all of these things by sheer circumstance, but what if I told you that BEFORE the world changed over night, we were all BECOMING something. I don’t know about you, but when I think of the areas in my life I want to become better at, there are significant challenges, roadblocks, that keep me from where I am to where I want to be. What are the challenges? Here are a few: Distraction, inability to focus on what’s most important, some struggle with getting motivated, impatience on the process of becoming, (Why am I not seeing results quicker), excuses, failure, the list could go on and on. Name your challenge. Of the list I just read, or maybe for you it’s something else. I want you to name it. Craig Groeschel, Who is the Pastor of Life.Church based out of OKC has a great quote. He says “ You can’t defeat what you don’t define.” DEFINE IT. DECLARE IT, and then YOU WILL DEFEAT IT. For me, my challenge is focusing on the most important. I’m in many ways an Entrepreneur. Started something from scratch and there are SO many plates spinning. Early on in the organization I was jumping from thing to thing. I was working 3 days a week delivering kitchen cabinets just to help provide for my family and then in the evenings or spare time I would work on getting our church started. Starting a non-profit or any company has a ton of challenges. Meeting with people, we hosted many people at our house, training leaders, casting vision, developing a website, creating logos, we did a 4th of July parade before the church started and handed out koozies to promote the church, canvased neighborhood, raising funds, determining what equipment we needed, ordering that equipment, finding a location to meet. So many different plates just to name a few. Wow just saying that all gives me a little anxiety. hahaWhat is it for you? What is your biggest challenge? Name it. You can’t defeat what you don’t define. So in this first episode I want to give you what I call the 3 D’s of Becoming Here’s the first D. Desire: Desire says, “I want it.”Think about this: “The starting point to becoming, is desire.” -Zack HarrisWe start here because you can’t become what you don’t desire. Without desire, there is no motivation, no goal, no passion, no purpose. When I was young all I wanted was to BECOME the best basketball player I could become. I had desire and it drove me to practice a lot. I mean my friends and I had jock jams playing outside, lower that rim to 6ft maybe 5ft and emulate our best MJ dunk with our tongue sticking out. Some of you are laughing right now because you know you did the same thing.Fast forward to adulthood, I know I have a desire to be a great husband to my wife Nicole, an influential, loving father to my son Layton, to become a friend who cares, and become a leader that makes a difference in others lives. I got into ministry because I had a desire to use my musical gifts in church and lead people in worship. I studied organizational leadership in college but once I started working in a church I realized wow, I really need to grow as a leader. So I had a desire to become a better leader. To this day I have a deep desire to become a leader who can help people know God and discover that He has a purpose for their lives. Desire led me to start a church, desire led me to grow, desire is still leading me to become.“The starting point to becoming, is desire.”My guess is if you are listening to this podcast you have desire. So what do you desire to become? You want to become a better version of yourself, become a better leader, a better spouse, friend, dad, mom, become a business owner, become better at a particular skill? How’s your desire?I don’t think you would be listening to this if you didn’t have some desire to grow. Congratulations. “The starting point to becoming, is desire.”That is the first step. But let’s not stop there. Desire says I want it, The second D is….Discipline: Discipline says “I’m committed to it.”What is discipline?It is choosing between what I want now and what I want most.For example, I may be trying to decide between if I want to workout OR do I want to sit on my comfy cozy couch, eat oreos with milk and watch my favorite show on Netflix. What I want NOW is to sit on that comfy cozy couch. BUT, What do I want most? I want to be healthy, active, disciplined, and stay alive to watch my son grow up, so instead of choosing between what I want NOW, I choose what I want MOST and I do a crossfit workout and get my butt kicked for an hour. Can’t tell you how terrible it is at the time, but my feeling of being disciplined is really high. Discipline is choosing between what I want now and what I want most. One of the most practical examples I can give you is to do 1 thing at the start of the day that makes you feel disciplined. Make your bed, run around the block one time, floss your teeth, read your bible, write down something you are thankful for, cross something off your to do list, accomplish something early and you will feel more disciplined throughout the day. I like to think of it this way: “Desire gets you going, but discipline keeps you becoming.” -Zack HarrisDiscipline says “I’m committed to it.”The last D isDetermination: Determination says “I won’t give up.” “Determination is doing what needs to be done, even when you don’t feel like it.” Right now I’m loving Sunday nights because on ESPN is the Michael Jordan documentary “The Last Dance.” Tells the story of the 1998 season of the Chicago bulls 6th championship. I was in middle school during this time. In the documentary before the Bulls won their first championship in 1991 they couldn’t beat the bad boy Detroit pistons. They were more physical, more mature, smarter, and a better team. But Jordan was DETERMINED to figure out how to beat them. Started trusting his team more, went to the weight room, got stronger. Listen, you are going to get knocked down, you will fail, you will lose, you will miss a day, but don’t miss two. To truly see progress you must keep going. Determination says “I won’t give up.” I used to say this to myself “Don’t miss Monday.” I was determined to start my week off right.Determination says “I won’t give up.” So let’s recap and then I’ll give you a couple questions to contemplate or discuss with someone: We are all becoming someone or something. Who are you becoming? What challenge or obstacle is getting in your way. You can’t defeat what you don’t define. Remember the three D’s of BECOMING. Desire say’s I want it. Discipline says I’m committed to it, Determination says I won’t give up. The ability to get more achieved - learn how to control your time, not just manage it. This is what this episode will focus on, or put bluntly, it’s about Getting Shit Done! What is time? Time is the indefinite continued progress of existence and events that occur in apparently irreversible succession from the past, through the present, to the future. The reason this is important is that time is limited – it eventually runs out for all of us. While our total years alive may differ – each day we are all limited to the same amount of time. Whether you are a CEO or retired, we each have 24 hours a day. So how do some people seem to get so much done working with the same time constraints? They do this by creating and controlling time. When I first heard this it took me a while to fully comprehend. How do you create time? Easily, you can either free up tasks or get through them quicker, however focus is the key. I believe that the 9-5 work day has killed productivity. Most people - if they really wanted - could get what might take a full eight-hour day in far less time – some look busy for 5 hours, then get what needs to be done before 5:30pm. This has led to habits in the workforce that have flown through in to lives. Reduces urgency as there is always more time - Even if you are at work and there are tasks to get done which someone else is providing to you, you control how you do these. The more you control time, the more you will get done - This then leads to a greater output and greater chance of pay raises and promotions. Success – is achieving something – more you achieve = more ‘success’ Plus, you will have more free time! The two ways to get more done – manage time and 100% focus – means stopping procrastination Heard ‘work smarter, not harder’ - It is about what you get done, not how long you spend doing it – Think it isn’t a great saying – as working smart is hard – it requires self control, good habits, time management – which aren’t easy to do put in the effort – where the working hard comes in – as initially it is hard – Discipline Discipline is interesting If you have discipline – you have self-control When you discipline someone else – it is punishing someone to teach them (current definition) The Latin disciplinameant "teaching, learning." The Old English version referred to a branch of knowledge or field of study (so if you're really good at word origins, you might want to make etymology your discipline). Developing discipline as a form of training is a military concept that's more than 500 years old. Then we started using the Old French ‘descepline’ – means to punish Self-control is important – either way you will be disciplined through You don’t get what you need to do done – someone else may discipline you, or you will do it yourself with negative self talk – or a modern-day equivalent of self-flagellation to punish ourselves for not getting something done Think most people would agree – like to have the first kind of discipline in our lives To get through more – need to be disciplined and give 100% focus to what you are doing. So how do you get started? Implement the ‘time management loop’! Start your day with a clear focus. This starts the night before with a review of your tasks the next day. I used to waste so much time figuring out what the plan for the day was when I would arrive at the office. I used to get in to the office, spend the first 20 minutes organising tasks and reading emails, then go get coffee. To do this, organise your time by chunking up your day into blocks. This helps to set limits on how long you have to finish something, helping to reduce the overall time spent on the task. A book called Deep Work explores flow and productivity that recommends exactly this. Having chunks of time set for one task and one task only leads to much more being produced. But focusing on the important tasks should be your priority. There is no point in chunking your time to spend on tasks that make you feel busy but achieve little. Focus on high-value activities. What is a high-value activity? It is simply something that will move you towards your goals more so than any other activity. To determine what is of the highest value, you need to align these tasks with your goals and priorities. It helps to focus on outcomes more so than the individual tasks. So, ask yourself ‘what must be done now to get to my end goal?’. Becoming goal orientated when deciding on what to spend your time on will give you the clear focus you need to become as productive as possible. But what happens to other tasks that you don’t get around to? There is a concept called comparative advantage. This works in economic terms where if one country can produce something at a lower cost (or better) than another, it should do this task and then trade for the other goods it foregoes producing. We can do this as individuals through outsourcing by getting someone else to do what you aren’t great at or don’t enjoy doing. To help with this, try to complete an ‘Activity Audit’. List what your weekly tasks include and what takes most time each week. This helps to determine how you spend your time and on what. Then you can potentially look at what can be outsourced and what can you only do to increase your income or free time. Say your goals is to start a side business, then you need to focus on the tasks that will achieve this. So, if there is the option between watching TV or working on setting up the business (website, registering, marketing) then the choice should be clear. However, there are some things that you cannot outsource such as spending time with family or friends. Sure, you could hire someone to take your partner out to dinner but you get little enjoyment from this. Focusing on your highest priority tasks helps to redefine time so you can control how it is spent and is the basis of the 80/20 rule. Minimize interruptions and unimportant things. Minimising interruptions is between external interruption and also then ones you create through multi-tasking. Just focus on one thing at a time, don’t let things distract you from your priority. Trying to perform too many things at once is the best way to reduce your overall productivity. This usually comes in the form of switching from one task to another without completing the first task. We’ve all been right in the middle of focused work when an urgent task demands our attention; this is one of the most frustrating kinds of multitasking, and often the hardest to avoid. It almost doesn’t seem like multitasking at all, but our minds need time to change gears in order to work efficiently. This then leads to taking longer to complete all of your tasks and makes you more prone to errors. If the tasks are complex then these time and error penalties increase further. Each task switch might waste only 1/10th of a second, but if you do a lot of switching in a day it can add up to a loss of 40% of your productivity. Also, removing unimportant decisions from your life will reduce Decision fatigue. Decision fatigue refers to the deteriorating quality of decisions made by an individual after a long session of decision making. It is estimated that average amount of remotely conscious decisions an adult makes each day equals about 35,000. I find that hard to believe and there is no way to accurately measure, but even if it is 10%, then that is still 3,500 a day! The less you have to think, the more brain power you will be left with. Most people spend more time thinking about what to eat for dinner than their goals so by the time it comes to do something of value they are already depleted. You have a finite amount of brain power, so use it on important things. Review your day. The only way to improve this whole process is to see what you actually spent time on versus your daily activity schedule. I was surprised with how much time I wasted every day on switching between tasks, not focusing enough and doing mundane tasks. The first week is the hardest, it initially takes some time and effort. Then, you should plan out your next day and complete the loop. To keep this loop going, you need to make a habit around this. It takes 30 days to create a habit, but good habits make your life easier. With good habits in place you don’t have to make as many hard decisions, thus you are less likely to make unproductive ones such as talking yourself out of doing what you had planned. Jocko Willink, a former navy seal who wrote the book Extreme Ownership has a great saying; Discipline equals Freedom. It is true, the more disciplined you are with this will give you more freedom of time in life! Day trading is not just about finding a strategy, practicing it, and then making oodles of money. Day traders develop certain traits, which in turn allow them to implement a strategy effectively, in all market conditions. When someone starts trading, it's unlikely they will possess all these traits. They may be strong in one, two, three, or even four of them, but might need to work on the other traits. That's good news. It means successful traders aren't born; they develop through arduous work focused on these traits: 1. Discipline Discipline is a key trait every trader needs. The market gives you infinite opportunities to trade. You can trade thousands of different products, every second of the day, yet very few of those seconds provide great trading opportunities. If a strategy provides about five trades a day, and stop losses and targets are automatically set for each trade, then there are only about five seconds of actual trading activity during the course of the day. Every other second is a chance to mess up those five trades, taking more trades than you should, getting distracted or skipping trades, prematurely exiting the trades you are in, or holding trades too long.2. Patience Patience is related to discipline. As discussed above, day trading (and trading of all types) requires a lot of waiting. When a trader is entering or exiting the market at inopportune times, they will often say "My timing is off." One could also say "My patience is off." Jumping into, or out of, trades too early or too late is a rampant problem among new traders. They simply haven't developed their patience enough to wait for the great entry and exit. This goes hand in hand with discipline, and you need to be patient until there is a call to action, then you need to have enough discipline to act without hesitation. 3. Adaptability You will never see two trading days that are exactly alike. This poses a problem when someone only looks at textbook examples of a strategy. When they go to implement it, everything looks different than it did in the example. Maybe there is more volatility, less volatility, a stronger (or weaker) trend, or a range. 4. Mental Toughness You could also think of this as being thick-skinned. The market will constantly throw losing trades at you, and you need to bounce back. If you feel discouraged every time you lose a trade, or your strategy fails to produce the result you expect, your life will be miserable. Losing trades are a constant; most successful day traders will have losing trades every day. 5. Independence Initially, you'll likely get some help with your trading, whether it's from reading articles or books, watching trading videos, or receiving mentoring. Ultimately, though, it's you who will place your trades and determine your own success. 6. Forward-Thinking Day traders can't be stuck in the past. While day traders use data from the past to help them make trading decisions, they must be able to apply that knowledge in real-time. Like a chess master, traders are always planning their next moves, calculating what they will do based on what their opponent (the market) does. As discussed in the adaptability section, the markets are not static.
