Flashback Episode of The Father Time Podcast with Jamie KalerThese genius dads are my favorite single panel cartoonists since The Far Side. And as it turns out, they are some of my fave guests ever. I met them the day of the show and they are truly some of my funniest guests ever. Here's a little backstory. Daniel and Jeremy Lehrer are identical twin cartoonists and comedy writers. They grew up in a large extended family in Los Angeles where the emphasis was on academic excellence, classical music, fine art, and other activities designed not to get them laid. After respectively graduating from Columbia University and Columbia Law School, Jeremy became a small cog at a big corporate law firm, while Daniel became a small cog at Ducati Motorcycles in Bologna, Italy. They engaged in a half-decade of the usual post-graduation soul- crushing work, before deciding to “Voltron” together to pursue their dreams of drawing and writing. They are represented at CAA.@lehrerboys, Daniel and Jeremy's Instagram account, is inspired by their horrible childhood fights over the Sunday Funnies and who got to read “The Far Side” first.Their satirical and biting single-panel cartoons comment on everything from Kim Kardashian and “selfie etiquette” to gender-neutral toilets and masturbation in high-tech times. The Lehrer Boys bring an outsider perspective to their work. They have created, sold, and developed numerous shows with studios including Fox, Adult Swim, Maker, and Amazon, and have been privileged to collaborate with talent like Paul Feig and Mila Kunis. They also recently created “Highly Gifted,” a series of animated shorts with Maker Studios, based on their socially-challenged high school years and starring comedian Ron Funches, Josh Brener of “Silicon Valley,” Oscar-winner Nat Faxon, and pop-icon Kesha. You Check them out at https://www.lehrerboysshop.comYou can catch The Parent's Lounge live every Tuesday night 10pm EST/7pm PST at:https://www.facebook.com/theparentslounge#theparentslounge #thelehrerboys #jamiekaler #jasongowin #katemulligan #farside #HighlyGifted #funnydads #parentingpodcast #parentinghumor #standupcomedy

Kicking things off with our baking plans! Mincemeat tartlets, pop tarts, Christmas cookies, fudge, and blueberry muffins... need we say more? Well, we will. Little article on Matt leaving... some are happy, we are not. Then we get into a brand new era of Bake Off - the AMERICAN Bake Off! Paul and Prue are the constants here, two NEW American hosts. Actress Ellie Kemper (The Office, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) and Zach Cherry (of Apple TV's Severance) are your new hosts for this show that will be launching its first full season next year on the ROKU channel (which is free by the way!). We give our thoughts on the show overall. Does it hold up to traditional Bake Off? We also give our assessment of the hosts in general - we've seen a lot of hosts in our time so we have thoughts! Then we look at our slate of American celebrity guests: Chloe Fineman (SNL), D'Arcy Carden (The Good Place), Liza Koshy (YouTube), Joel Kim Booster (Fire Island), Nat Faxon (writer / comedy actor), and the one that was a surprise favorite of us all... NFL Star (and Actor) Marshawn Lynch. We just have to say upfront - Marshawn Lynch stole the show. Charming, funny, and not a terrible baker. Every one of us found ourselves pulling for him and loving the interactions he was having with the others guests, hosts, and judges. He was a delight. Having 6 bakers was unusual for a holiday episode... we could not determine why they went with the number they did. Spoliers below so stop now if you haven't see the episode! For a Signature, the guests were asked to make cream puffs. This was a bit surprising that celebrity (non-baker) judges were asked to make a choux pastry as it's not a baking standard for most, but they all kinda did alright. Each had a theme and the judges were impressed... Paul handed out THREE handshakes... but we are saying one of them was almost coerced from him... so more like two and a half. In the Technical, another not so easy feat. Meringue baskets formed into a wreath with sugared berries, mascarpone cream, and blueberry coolie.... needless to say, many had never heard of these things yet alone made them before. Highlight of the segment - Marshawn asking "is this 'whisking'?" Most of the bakers did a decent job though. Meringues looked decent, though many underbaked not knowing how long it actually takes to make right, and there was a good job done using the fruits. People who performed well in the first round also did well here. One baker split their pants ... sos there's that. In the Showstopper, the bakers were asked to make a cake that had a 3D element and told their favorite Holiday story. The stories were heartwarming and the cakes that they made were also incredibly well done. Paul had D'arcy's and said "the is the best cake I've had in a long time". Lots of great flavors and for the most part, solid work. A couple underbaked, but the decorations were good. again, surprising the group was Marshawn and his PawPaw (his grandfather) cake. Fantastic story and while it wasn't the prettiest ... a delicious cake!! Marshawn rattling off a dozen ways to say "money" to Prue was what this was all about. Paul even says at the end as far as celebrity bakers go, the American's may be better. All three of us agreed that this was one of the best (if not THE best) episode of Bake Off we have seen (UK or US).

Sundance Roundup: Downhill and The Assistant Joi and Ro sit down to discuss two  films showcased during the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. Each film's central theme, gaslighting, plays out subtly and in real time. Both film open the door to a discussion that ultimately ends up about relationships and the care you take of you while in them.  Joi On: The Assistant  Written and directed by Kitty Green, The Assistant follows Jane (Julia Garner), a young assistant at a film production company with aspirations to rise in the industry. While doing her daily tasks, she gradually notices the inappropriate behavior of her boss. Motivated to speak up, her concerns reveal the complicit nature of the company she works for.  Green leverages her expertise in documentaries to edit and direct the story in a succinct manner. Explorative, we begin with Jane's daily routine as an assistant. Most of her duties are what you expect from an assistant. But scenes like Jane deep cleaning her boss' office and throwing out syringes set the tone that something is off in this work culture. The story is crafted based on implication versus "cold hard facts." This is not to diminish the severity of the actions, but rather confront the sobering truth that many sexual assault and harassment cases lack evidence for "believability."  The first twenty minutes of the film moves at a snail's pace. But it's deliberate in it's messaging: in the crawl of the day-to-day, we sometimes miss the red flags. Jane eventually can no longer ignore the signs and approaches Human Resources rep Wilcock (Matthew Macfadyen) in the climactic scene of the film. What proceeds is an uncomfortable moment of gaslighting, where Jane is made to feel unsure of the behavior she's seen. Shocked, she returns to her desk and is forced to email her boss an apology for reporting him. The realization of this shady workplace weighs heavily on Jane. But in the end, we assume that Jane will clock into work tomorrow, to fight another day. Open about the inspiration from Weinstein and the #MeToo era, Green has stated her goal was to "make a project that tackles not just this misconduct, but these broader themes of a system that’s inherently structured against women[.]" She succeeds in taking these meaty themes and streamlining them, without undercutting the impact. Simple, yet effective in its delivery, The Assistant is a cautionary tale of how easy it is to ignore abusive structures. And once you're sucked in, how hard it is to speak up. Downhill An American remake of the 2014 Swedish dramedy Force Majeure, Downhill - directed by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash - follows the Staunton family, led by the father Pete (Will Ferrell) and the mother Billie (Julia Louis-Dreyfus). While on a ski vacation with their children in the Alps, the couple experience what they assumed to be an avalanche. Pete's reaction to flee versus protecting his family causes problems for his relationships with his wife and sons. The cinematography juxtaposes the dark family dynamics with bright sweeping shots. Danny Cohen has an easy muse in the beautiful, white Alps background. But being the cinematographer for films such as The Kings Speech, The Danish Girl, Room, and much more certainly helps. Cohen's eye is utilized best on the slopes, with stock photo shots of skiers enjoying the sport. He brings a lightness that marries well to this black comedy. It puts a spotlight on how even in the most beautiful places, families can crumble.  Even with such a stunning backdrop, the story hones in on how Pete and Billie aren't on one accord after the avalanche incident. Unfortunately, the written lack of chemistry of the characters is overshadowed by the actual lack of chemistry between the actors.  Will Ferrell is completely miscast as Pete, not finding the right balance between comedy and drama in his performance. Julia Louis-Dreyfus carries the emotional load of the film, course-correcting their interactions to the best of her abilities.

Jay and Micah sit down to discuss season 1 of Netflix's latest original series, Friends from College. Starring Keegan-Michael Key, Cobie Smulders, Fred Savage, Nat Faxon, Annie Parisse, Jae Suh Park, and Billy Eichner. The show follows seven friends who went to Harvard together that are in their late 30s/early 40s reuniting as their paths cross in New York City. Old relationships rekindle, while others have never died. A mixture of "comedies of life" moments well balanced with serious issues of leaving your late breaking adult adolescence for the eventual slide into what should be your calming 40s. The show features characters who are all incredibly terrible and selfish people but have endearing qualities once you dig into the meat of what they represent. There are issues of infidelity, career changes, gaining maturity, relationship prioritizing, trying to have kids (IVF), and balancing all of that on top of the drudges of life.
