When Greg Minnaar left the Santa Cruz Syndicate, it was about as big of a news story as you get in mountain bike racing. A rider who went against the very best of each generation, it was at one time impossible to think of him racing for anyone other than the Californian brand. One season later, to say he's landed on his feet would be an understatement. His 2024 racing season didn't unfold as he would have hoped, but he rounds out the year with a World Cup podium, fresh motivation, and a partnership with a brand he seems to be very well aligned with, even if now it's about helping other riders win, and not his own racing ambitions. Brian and I caught up with him to talk about old bikes, blank chequebooks and the lucky number 13.

Episode 16: Running Form Considerations - A Systemic Approach with Guest Dr. Lawrence van Lingen

All Things Endurance

In this episode of All Things Endurance, host Rick Prince chats with structural integration specialist, Dr. Lawrence van Lingen. Dr. van Lingen takes a holistic and systemic approach to running form due to his belief that nothing in the body functions in isolation. While some may view Dr. van Lingen's methods as contrarian in nature, they are evidence-based and get results - which may be why so many professional athletes seek out Dr. van Lingen.  About Dr. Lawrence van LingenDr. van Lingen has helped thousands of people overcome pain and injury and enhance their sports performance and everyday well-being. He has over twenty years of experience in sports chiropractic, physical therapy, rehabilitation, strength and conditioning, movement coaching, and breathing techniques. Lawrence is the founder of Innerunner, an online community with masterclasses, workshops, programs, and teachings that aim to transform your running and movement potential. He helps his running community and world-class athletic clients, such as Red Bull, Mr Price Running, Santa Cruz Syndicate and athletes such as Greg Minnaar, Ryan Sandes, Taylor Knibb, Jan Frodeno, and Flora Duffy, to name just a few, to run better, move better, and feel better.  Areas covered in the podcast: 1.       What is your background?2.       Running gait is often solely viewed through the lens of the musculoskeletal system. Your take on it is different. Could you explain?3.       In your opinion, do gait specialists in the US have a different view of how the body functions than elsewhere in the world?4.       Why do you think more people don't have this systemic view of how the body functions and therefore, how running gait is influenced?5.       Clearly, your model of viewing the mind/body as a whole differs greatly from most others. That being said, with respect to conventional gait analysis, what are some things that you feel they get right, and wrong?6.       Are there some common reasons that you've found across working with a variety of athletes for gait issues?7.       Do you ever encounter resistance from potential athletes with respect to your systemic view of the body?8.       If you could give just a few pieces of advice for our listeners today with respect to improving their running form, what would it be?Lastly, what are some of the biggest and most common running form myths that you are aware of, and why are they myths?

The 2024 World Cup season is over. And what a whirlwind the past five months have been, with all-time racing across the board. It's a shame things have to come to an end, but the hype is already building for next year. Mont-Sainte-Anne was very par the course for how the 2024 season has gone, with wet conditions on race day. Luckily, the classic Canadian course holds moisture like a champ, and besides some slick rocks and fresh sections, it was game on. Our dude Dak was having another promising weekend, and the odds were looking good that he could close out the year with another podium. That was until a damn track pole had other plans. #polegate2024Enjoy listening to the crew discuss all kinds of nonsense, from arm pump surgeries to e-bike training for DH, Greg Minnaar's retirement, the odds of needing a work Visa to race World Cups next year, rule changes for next year, and, of course, race highlights from the weekend and overall standings. A massive thank you to everyone who listened to us banter all season—we love bringing you these conversations, and we appreciate the support!

After 16 years together, Greg Minnaar's name was synonymous with that of the Santa Cruz Syndicate, but in a move that surprised everyone this off-season, even Minnaar himself, the Syndicate let go the 42-year-old South African. That left the four-time world champion scrambling to find a ride for 2024 mid-October in a year where budgets were tight. While the past several months have been anything but restful, you don't win 23 World Cups without being a hard worker and Minnaar has signed a three-year contract with Norco Bicycles and has been able to pull together a team at the eleventh hour that sounds more than promising. Minnaar will be racing alongside Gracey Hemstreet and Lucas Cruz this season, but his main focus will be setting up the processes and people to turn Norco Factory Racing into a future-proofed, race-winning team and continue to direct the team beyond his eventual retirement. Sarah sat down with Minnaar yesterday to talk about the team he's formed for 2024, riding Norco's prototype bike, and what his goals are for the coming years. If you haven't already heard of Asa Vermette, chances are, that's about to change in a big way this coming year. The 16-year-old Durango native has been making waves in the downhill scene since he was 14, showing up at pro races and beating some of the sport's top riders for the podium. He won most of his races this year, including the Enduro National Championship where he beat 3x world champ Richie Rude. 2024 will be the first year that he can compete in World Cups, where he'll be racing as a junior despite proving his ability to race at the top of the pro field. Earlier this year, he signed a multi-year deal with Frameworks, the team led by fellow downhill racer Neko Mulally. Asa joins Payson this week to talk about being one of the most hyped young riders the sport has seen in years. He talks about rubbing shoulders with his heroes…while standing next to them on the podium, and throwing backflips at Red Bull Rampage. He explains how Neko Mulally and the Frameworks team immediately felt like family, and how he plans to spend the $7,500 he won when he placed second at the U.S. Open this year ahead of the likes of Greg Minnaar and Jackson Goldstone. Payson also chats with Neko Mulally about when Asa first appeared on his radar, how his role as a mentor has been surprisingly emotional, and the moment when Asa's course record sweep at Snowshoe sent shockwaves through the pro field. Instagram: @theadventurestache

In 2021 and at the age of 39, Greg was crowned Downhill World Champion for the fourth time in his career, 20 years after his first World Cup series win. He has been runner up in the World Cup four times, placed third three times, and has been the winner in 23 World Cup events, the most by any racer in history. At 40, he is still competing, and winning. In this interview he is his usual cool and calm self. He discusses how he manages fear of injury and crashing at speeds of over 70km/h, how he maintains consistent performances and a consistent performance mindset, and about adapting and adjusting to change. He speaks riding the fine-line of the perfect race, between hesitation and caution on one side, and reckless over-striving on the other, and about riding your own race in sport and in life. He also shares advice for recreational mountain bikers to go faster, with while getting injured less, and more. Greg is the GOAT of downhill racing, and his lessons are applicable to all of life. They are super comfy straight out of the box, and have some lovely design details. Like rubber dots in the heel cup to stop your heel from lifting. The sole on the flat pedal shoe is a great balance of pedal grip and the ability to adjust the position of your foot on the pedal. This recording was taken from our LIVE session with Greg so please excuse the audio quality and references to items you cannot see.  The GOAT, Fresh Prince of Big Air or Puzzler. Who are we talking about? We are talking about the Pietermaritzburg born and bread, greatest of all time downhill mountain biker Greg Minnaar!Greg has had an incredible journey to becoming the best and most consistent performer at a world cup and world champs level. From his early days (1999) of racing internationally as a junior, he has repeatedly strung together performances that have found him on the podium. These performances have lead to Greg becoming the greatest downhill mountain biker of all time. Through that he enjoys some of strongest sponsorship partnerships the sport has seen between an athlete and brands. Not only that but Greg has played an active role in one of the most progressive times in the sports history from a bike development point of view. From racing 26", 27.5" and now 29" bikes, he has mastered his craft across all platforms showcasing his strength and diversity as an athlete. Beyond his racing career, Greg has always taken a keen interest in the business world and is involved in several projects and businesses in South Africa as well as abroad. The combination of his riding and business savvy has positioned him very nicely from life after professional sport. This is not entirely common amongst athletes especially in the non mainstream sports space. Was all of this by design or did it simply fall in to place? In this EP of "SOMETHING FRESH" we talk to Greg about his journey, lessons he has learned along the way and how he has managed to build the empire he has around himself as a brand all the while performing at the highest level! At just 38 years old, Greg is still at the top of his professional game after 20 years of racing at the highest level and is set to keep on going! We hope that you enjoy this conversation as much as we did!#somethingfresh #wildair #wildairexperience

Was this the greatest downhill mountain bike race ever? Steve Peat thinks so, and he's seen almost every one of them! The final race of the 2019 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup Downhill season concluded in Snowshoe, West Virginia, with Danny Hart taking the race win and Loic Bruni narrowly edging out Amaury Pierron for the World Cup overall Championship of 2019. Loic would need a third place finish to keep the overall if Amaury won the race. Amaury was leading the race with an early run that seemed unbeatable. Loic dropped in and ended up in 3rd place with only Danny Hart remaining. If Danny landed in 2nd, Amaury would win the overall. If Danny won the race, Loic would win the overall. Danny's split times were so close the entire way down his run, that until he crossed the line, no one was sure what the outcome would be. Danny eventually beat Amaury by just .656 seconds, winning the race and leaving Loic with the title. Tracey Hannah earned the women's overall championships victory, but not after Marine Cabirou took the race win, forcing Tracey to be mistake-free within a tight threshold. If Marine won the race, Tracey would have to finish 7th or better. Tracey ended up finishing 5th with just a few seconds to spare and earned the overall victory.Rider Interviews and Times Table of Contents1:26 - Steve Peat5:13 - Loic Bruni11:38 - Amaury Pierron20:45 - Eddie Masters22:18 - Laurent Delorme, Loic's Team Manager23:47 - Tracey Hannah29:56 - Danny Hart34:09 - Marine Cabirou35:48 - Charlie Harrison42:12 - Dakotah Norton43:09 - Bruce Klein45:11 - Thibaut Daprela47:01 - Myriam Nicole48:21 - Troy Brosnan51:54 - Chris Kilmurry55:12 - Veronika Widmann56:10 - Greg Minnaar1:00:00 - Loris Vergier1:03:37 - Luke Meier-Smith1:04:53 - Greg Williamson1:06:28 - Thomas Estaque1:07:21 - Dean Lucas (Nicest guy in Downhilling?)1:10:56 - Finn Iles1:16:08 - Kye A'hern

They cover many topics, including the Syndicate, training, tire size, and more. The Path guys welcome all of your questions and encourage you to send them an email with the subject “Podcast Question” to podcast@thepathbikeshop.com.  ABOUT GREG MINNAAR Greg first started racing BMX at 4 years of age. He soon moved over to motocross and raced for 11 years before his parents bought a bicycle shop and his path to DH stardom began. Greg was initially inspired by the rivalry between Nico Vouilloz and Steve Peat. He worked his way up to the Santa Cruz Syndicate team to eventually ride alongside one of those childhood heroes. Greg’s won back-to-back World Championships on the Syndicate, and is widely recognized as one of the smoothest and most consistent DH racers on the circuit. Greg’s personal sponsors include Oneal, Oakley, Kabuto, Oprtix, Five Ten, and Gamut. ABOUT LUCA SHAW Luca’s been on two wheels his whole life. He started off riding motocross at the tender age of 4, and got into BMX racing when he turned 8 and raced all across the country as an amateur. When he was 13, he did his first mountain bike race, and it’s been all downhill from there! ABOUT LORIS VERGIER Loris Vergier’s been racing bikes since he was 10 years old, and he brings two Junior World Cup titles, a Junior World Championship, and two Elite World Cup podiums with him to the Syndicate—we can’t wait to see what he can do. ----------- RELATED SHOW LINKS Shop via our Amazon Affiliate Link Shop the Mountain Bike Radio Store Get on The Path Newsletter Email List Santa Cruz Syndicate: https://www.santacruzbicycles.com/en-US/syndicate Greg Minnaar – “Greg’s Epic – A Tallboy Tale”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dIjQxEOgqIo About Greg Minnaar: https://www.santacruzbicycles.com/en-US/rider/greg-minnaar About Luca Shaw: https://www.santacruzbicycles.com/en-US/rider/luca-shaw About Loris Vergier: https://www.santacruzbicycles.com/en-US/rider/loris-vergier #ThePathPodcast Follow Auk on Instagram The Path Bike Shop Website The Path Bike Shop Facebook Page The Path Bike Shop on Instagram The Path Bike Shop on Twitter The Path Bike Shop on Google+ The Path Bike Shop on Pinterest The Path Bike Shop on Vimeo Like what you are getting from Mountain Bike Radio? While I meant that to be endearing, I realized, after our interview, that the term doesn't convey the complexity and responsibility that comes with being Syndicate team manager. As one of mountain biking's greatest photographers and storytellers, Sven Martin's name should ring out to anyone who's been on Vital MTB or picked up a magazine in the last 10 years. His images and interviews capture the atmosphere and emotion of the World Cup and Enduro World Series in a way that only those of a true mountain biking superfan can. The South African's immersion and investment in our sport started by chance after his wife Anka picked up a bike while they were living in Southern California. Through riding, racing and photography, he has carved out the dream life; traveling the world, riding bikes and taking photos of his adventures. His success, however, comes from passion, hustle and hard work that many don't get to see. Sven is a friend of mine, but I still look at him as the greatest storyteller in mountain biking right now, and he's a huge reason for Vital's success throughout the years. Our interview is long, but it's full of inspiration, information and plenty of laughs because that's just what happens when he's around. Thank you, Sven. It's an honor to have you on the show. -gordo
