Albo's Housing Hypocrisy

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 25, 2024 5:51

Australia is struggling with a number of crisis situations – a cost-of-living crisis, a housing affordability crisis and a rental shortage crisis. Our beloved Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has declared on many occasions how much he cares about the plight of ordinary Australians in dealing with these issues. But, as the old saying goes, actions speak louder than words – and that is particularly relevant to our elected representatives who love to stand before the media cameras and declare their concern for the people but fail to match their words with appropriate actions. So, let's look at how the Prime Minister has handled his personal housing market issues in 2024. In May this year Albanese evicted a long-standing tenant in a property he owned in the Sydney suburb of Dulwich Hill. At the time, the tenant declared he was shocked to learn he no longer had a place to live and had no idea he was going to be kicked out of his home of four years. At the time the tenant said he had tried to seek clarification of the situation and why he had to leave but did not receive a response. He said at the time: “It seems a little bit misaligned with the messaging Labor has been putting out ... about recognising how difficult it is for renters.” He also said: “It's a crippling blow for me right now. I have mixed emotions in calling this out. I voted for Albo at the last election and am broadly a supporter of his policies.” So, PM Albanese, having got rid of the pesky tenant, then put the Dulwich Hill property on the market, with an auction scheduled for October. This was a three-bedroom townhouse at 29B Lewisham St in Dulwich Hill which Albanese bought for $1.17 million in 2015 and was advertising for auction with a price guide of $1.9 million. If it sold at that price, it would represent a 62% gain in nine years. But then, at the last minute, the Prime Minister cancelled the auction and decided not to sell the property after all. He evicted his tenant because he said he wanted to sell and then decided NOT to sell. Then, in the same week, it was revealed he had spent $4.3 million on a new home on the Central Coast north of Sydney. This is Albo the battler we're talking about, the guy who loves to talk about his tough working-class roots and growing up in a housing commission environment. Albanese said he planned initially on leasing out the property with views over Copacabana Beach, with estimates he will pocket between $2000 and $2500 a week in rental income. A Labor MP, who declined to be named, said the purchase was “not a great look” for Albanese, who will have to fight hard to hold on to government at the next federal election. Responding to claims the purchase was a bad look in a cost-of-living crisis and a housing market crisis, Albanese, who earns more than $600,000 a year, said he knew “what it is like to struggle”, referring to his upbringing in public housing in Sydney's Camperdown. “I am much better off as Prime Minister. I earn a good income. I understand that,” he said. Columnist Dennis Shanahan wrote in The Australian: “There are two unequivocal things to say about Anthony Albanese's decision to buy a $4.3 million cliff top, ocean view home on the NSW Central Coast. The first is — good on him. Well done for living the Australian dream of home ownership and getting there on his own. “The second is this — this has to be the dumbest, most damaging piece of political tone deafness and timing since Tony Abbott appointed Prince Philip as a “Knight of the Order of Australia” in the Australia Day honours' list in 2015.” Shanahan wrote: “No matter what Albanese says to justify the purchase, it's a bad political look that makes him appear out of touch with people renting and trying to buy their own home. It also raises the immediate thought that it's a retirement parachute for after the next election.” Meanwhile, on the same day as the $4.3 million purchase was revealed, it was the AGM of Commonwealth Bank – which reported that more and more customers are feeling the pinch from the cost-of-living crisis. Commonwealth Bank chief executive Matt Comyn revealed huge numbers of Australians are falling behind on their mortgage repayments. He told shareholders the bank has offered tailored hardship payment arrangements to 132,000 customers over the past year. Comyn said: “Households are continuing to find it very challenging.” But certainly not the household of our battler Prime Minister. Albo is doing very well indeed. He's just paid over $4 million for a home he won't be living in and he has decided he doesn't need to sell his $1.9 million investment property in Sydney to afford it. And that's perplexing news for the tenant he evicted on the grounds that he needed to sell the property, before subsequently changing his mind.

After fourteen years of metal in the Australian music scene, d-beat hardcore outfit Dark Horse feel they are only now just starting to hit their straps.Three albums deep, Dark Horse recently brought in a new bass player, in the process reinvigorating the line-up and providing greater impetus for the future. As well as nearing completion on a split 7" with Canberra based Blight Worms, Dark horse are also preparing to decimate the fifth annual Metal In The Mountains, to be held on November 30.To be held in the Beechworth Historic District and also featuring Sordid Ordeal, Mammon's Throne, Munitions, The Krugers and more, Metal In The Mountains promises to be even better this year with a talented line-up and ample space to make as much noise as possible.HEAVY caught up with vocalist Dennis and bass player Dale to talk more."I haven't been," Dennis replied when asked about Metal In The Mountains, "but know quite a few friends that have played there with their bands, and they said it's an excellent festival with very good organisation and lovely crowds. So I can't wait to actually go somewhere where we haven't been."We ask what punters can expect live from Dark Horse."It's the same Dark Horse energy," Dale began. "It's funny, I was a big fan of the band before I joined, and Dark Horse is one of the most consistent bands, rip your face off every time. It's 30 minutes of intense energy, riffs, and in your face and off your face."In the full interview, we discussed Dark Horse's sound and style, with Dale mentioning that they have found a formula over the years, which involves going fast, heavy, and being in-your-face. We also discussed songs to listen to in order to prepare for the live performance and Dale's background in playing in bands for 30 years. Dale shared that they were working on a 7-inch split with Canberra-based band Blight Worms, which they recorded in a single day. They also mentioned plans for a full-length album next year. In terms of live performances, Dale confirmed upcoming shows in Sydney, Melbourne, Erskineville, and Dulwich Hill plus more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

In 2016, Edwina and her husband, Neil Varcoe discovered an original 1890s sandstone property on 100 acres in the New South Wales Capertee Valley. They have meticulously restored the house and transformed the property into a luxury accommodation business called Warramba. Now, the next challenge. The couple recently sold their meticulously renovated Dulwich Hill home in Sydney to pursue their second, decidedly more ambitious project as hosts, the restoration of an guesthouse in the historic town of Carcoar, New South Wales. Neil will run the project from Carcoar while Edwina will remain in the city with their two kids, Molly and Tom, who makes a charming cameo in this podcast. With the new hotel ‘The Victoria' slated for opening in 2025, they have a busy few years ahead of them. It was such a pleasure catching up with Edwina to learn all about their forthcoming plans as well as the enormous amount they've learned on their journey so far. Anglican priest Fr Dave Smith — or “Fighting Father Dave” as he's known to many due to his passion for boxing — has had a heart for social justice for a long time. That and a passion for Christ is what got him into ministry. And, yes, the social justice thing placed him firmly on the Left side of the political spectrum. That was until COVID. Given the Left's love of all the restrictions, he's questioning that political affiliation.Fr Dave shares his concerns about pandemic powers in this podcast episode titled “Priest Punches Pandemic Powers — with Fr Dave Smith”.As someone who works with at risk youth and those in the margins of society, he's seen first hand the devastating effect of lockdowns and other restrictions. He's also seen government overreach impacting on his Church and, worse still, church leaders acquiesce to government restrictions on worship.Father Dave is best known for his work with at-risk young people, especially in his use of boxing for those suffering from substance abuse problems and anger-management issues. He is also a 6th degree black belt and Australia's oldest active professional boxer. His progression into martial arts and boxing came out of his attempt to raise funds for his youth centre in Dulwich Hill, where he was parish priest for thirty years. Father Dave has been nominated three time for ‘Australian of the Year'. He is an outspoken activist on social justice and interfaith issues. He is the proud father of four children. The podcast is now powered by The Good Sauce conservative news site which can be found at goodsauce.news More podcast episodes from Conservative One can be found at www.georgechristensen.com.au/podcast

In Episode 16, Bishop Richard speaks with Fr. Don Richardson, Dean of St. Mary's Cathedral in Sydney. They discuss Church Architecture and Fr Don's new book, Beauty and Light with Faith. Fr Don Richardson has been Dean of St Mary's Cathedral since 2016, but his association with the cathedral goes back further. He regards St Mary's as his spiritual home, a sanctuary where people are given a glimpse of the divine even in the midst of life's worldly cares.  As a young working man Fr Richardson worshipped regularly at St Mary's. He became an acolyte there, and in 1985 he worked full-time as the sacristan. It was then that he began to make notes on the cathedral's stained glass windows. A trip to see the great cathedrals of Britain, and his seminary studies from 1986, helped enrich his appreciation for St Mary's. For several years each January, during the seminary summer breaks, he returned to the cathedral to conduct daily guided tours.  Ordained a priest in St Mary's in 1992, Fr Richardson went on to serve successively in the Sydney parishes of Mount Pritchard and Menai. Then, appointed Assistant Priest at the cathedral by Cardinal Clancy in 1997, he remained there until the end of 2003. Fr Richardson subsequently took up the pastoral care of the parish of Dulwich Hill until, in 2009, Cardinal Pell asked him to do postgraduate studies at the Liturgical Institute at Mundelein, near Chicago, in the United States. This study further deepened his appreciation of how the cathedral's stained glass windows can draw people towards God.  Fr Richardson returned to Sydney in 2010 to serve as Parish Priest of Woollahra and as Director of the Archdiocesan Liturgy Office, and he remained at Woollahra until his appointment back to the cathedral as Administrator and Dean by Archbishop Fisher in 2016. He thinks he has the best job in the whole Australian Church.

Every now and then, a seemingly low-risk investment can backfire due to circumstances beyond the investor's control. Since Melissa Morgan last appeared on The Smart Property Investment Show 18 months ago, she experienced the repercussions of a significant market drop on her development project in Dulwich Hill in Sydney's inner west. Melissa joins host Phil Tarrant on the podcast to share the lessons she learnt from the Dulwich Hill investment, details of her recent eastern suburbs warehouse conversion, and explains why she continues to choose the development route over buying properties that increase in value without any work.
