Sui video brevi sappi

Dr. Mahdi Sheikh and Dr. David Zaridze join Dr. Shannon Westin to discuss how quitting smoking after diagnosis may impact survival in kidney cancer. TRANSCRIPT The guest on this podcast episode has no disclosures to declare. Dr. Shannon Westin: Hello everyone, and welcome to another episode of JCO After Hours. This is the podcast where we get in-depth on manuscripts that have been published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. As always, I'm your host, Shannon Westin, Gynecologic Oncologist and Social Media Editor for the JCO. And I am so excited to be here today. We are going to be discussing the paper, “Smoking Cessation After Diagnosis of Kidney Cancer Is Associated With Reduced Risk of Mortality and Cancer Progression: A Prospective Cohort Study,” which was published in the JCO on March 29, 2023. And this very intriguing paper, I have two of the major authors from this paper. First is Mahdi Sheikh, who is a scientist and epidemiologist at the International Agency for Research on Cancer, the World Health Organization in Lyon, France. Welcome, Dr. Sheikh. Dr. Mahdi Sheikh: Thank you very much, Dr. Westin, and thanks for having us. Dr. Shannon Westin: And then with Dr. Sheikh is Dr. David Zaridze. He is the Director of the Department of Clinical Epidemiology at the N.N. Blokhin Russian Cancer Research Center in Moscow and also the President of the Russian Cancer Society. We are with greatness today. Dr. David Zaridze: Thank you. Thank you very much. Nice to be with you. Dr. Shannon Westin: Very nice to be with the two of you. So, let's get started. I first wanted to just level set. Could one of you review just the overall incidence of kidney cancer and what proportion of patients with kidney cancer are known to be smokers at diagnosis? Dr. David Zaridze: The figures I'm going to present are rates. They are adjusted to standard world population. Why am I saying that? Because in America you sometimes use adjustment to the US population. These figures will be different from what you are accustomed to see. Okay, incidence of kidney cancer in Russia, in men, 14.1 per 100,000. I compare this with the United States of America, men, 16.5. Very small difference. Women in Russia, 8 per 100,000. In the United States of America, 8.8 per 100,000 of population. Exactly the same. Very close. These rates are sort of high-ish, but there are very high rates, for example, in the Czech Republic, where rates are more than 20 and other Central European countries. In Russia, kidney cancer mortality in men is 6 per 100,000. In USA, 3 per 100,000. In women in Russia, 1.9. In the United States, 1.3. I would say that there is a difference in mortality in men, not much in women. The incidence of kidney cancer is increasing in Russia sharply, sharply. Since 1990 it has increased - it's tripled. It increased from 5 per 100,000 in 1990 to 14 per 100,000 in 2019. Mortality is stable or declining. This is suggesting that kidney cancer is overdiagnosed in Russia and probably elsewhere. But this is not a problem of our discussion now. The frequency of the prevalence of smoking in kidney cancer patients. It is estimated that 15% to 20% of patients with kidney cancer smoke. In Russia, we have results only from our study. 18% of patients smoked at admission to our cancer center. Dr. Shannon Westin: Got it. Okay, good. Well, that's really helpful, especially to those of us that don't take care of patients with kidney cancer every day. It helps us just understand. And I guess the next question is what do we know about the impact of tobacco cessation on the risk of kidney cancer? So you were talking about that increasing incidence. How does tobacco cessation impact that? Dr. Mahdi Sheikh: Tobacco smoking is a known risk factor for kidney cancer and an estimated 17% of the kidney cancer burden worldwide can be attributed to tobacco smoking. There is a recent meta-analysis of 56 studies that was published a few years ago that clearly showed a dose-response relationship between smoking and kidney cancer, meaning that the more cigarettes a day you smoke, the risk of kidney cancer will go up. For example, the risk that was shown for five cigarettes per day was 20%. It goes up until 70% for 30 cigarettes per day. And also with a duration, the more years you smoke, the risk for kidney cancer will go higher. However, the good news is that when you quit smoking, there is strong evidence that the risk for developing kidney cancer will be lower compared to if you continue smoking. And there is some evidence that shows again dose-response relationship, meaning that the more years you spend in quitting smoking, the lower your risk would be for developing kidney cancer compared to if you continue smoking. So this is not only about renal cancer or kidney cancer but also true about many other cancer sites as well. Dr. Shannon Westin: Okay, that's super helpful. And then I guess prior to your study that we're about to talk about, did we have any information on what happens when patients quit smoking after their diagnosis? Any limitations to those data that were available? Dr. David Zaridze: You mean the data which was prior our study? You know, the negative effect of smoking after diagnosis has been shown nearly three decades ago. The information exists already for thirty years, but it was largely ignored not only in clinical practice but also in clinical trials. And I have to stress that in clinical trials this information is still ignored. I came across these studies and decided to review them some time ago. All they were case-control studies and to my knowledge, none of them assessed the effect of quitting smoking. I decided to review these studies and included this review in my book, Smoking: A Major Cause of Cancer, which was published in 2012 and was dedicated to Professor Richard Doll's anniversary. In fact, this was a stimulus for the study we are discussing. And in fact, the component of this study we are discussing today was built in and baked into the existing cohort study to which we added the active follow-up component for assessing the changes in smoking habit and disease status. Dr. Mahdi Sheikh: If you review the evidence, before publishing this study just like a few years ago, we find that there are many studies published talking about the effects of smoking cessation on cancer survival. However, as David mentioned when you go deep into these studies, you'll find a lot of limitations. First of all, most of these studies are retrospective studies, which means that either case-control or retrospective course that patients developed the outcome, and then some investigators came to see their records to assess or ask family members before they developed the outcomes. There are a lot of biases with these types of studies. And with the epidemiologic study, perspective study that we did, has less limitations compared to retrospective ones. Another one is that when we go into the study you see, they only assess a small number of patients, small sample size. Some studies just assess 10 smokers, some assess like 30. By this study we try to assess a large number of smokers who quit smoking after diagnosis. Another limitation is that– First, let's see what exposure and what setting we are talking about. We're talking about smoking which is a very dynamic behavior. People quit smoking and they relapse smoking and they quit smoking and so on. So if you access this exposure for only a limited time, for example, for one year, then you may miss what happens after that which results in misclassification of some of the participants. So repeated assessment was not done in other studies that we did here in this study. Another one, you are talking about special setting patients who are diagnosed with cancer. These patients have special circumstances, they have treatments, they have family support, they might go under the stress of cancer, and all these different stages at diagnosis. And most studies that are available, they didn't account for this. They didn't adjust or they didn't try to understand the role of these compounding factors, as we call it in epidemiology, on that, the thing that we're trying to address. And a prospective study, as I said, long follow-up time. Even the very few prospective studies that were available for other cancer sites that have only one year or maximum two years of follow-up with this type of exposure, so it is important to follow them for a long time. Another thing I would say was exposure assessment. Not only did we repeatedly try to assess exposure among participants, but try to call the people– David and his team who did the study in the field, called the participants and tried to ask the family members and sometimes their physicians about their smoking behaviors. When you go to current evidence you see, mostly smoking behavior was assessed using the record that is available like treatment records or patient records, which again has some limitations if you do not assess exposure among qualified participants. Finally, we're talking about a dynamic behavior in the follow-ups. Some people might change smoking. But there is a very important thing, in this study, we also collect at the time of quitting smoking. There's a very important thing in statistics we call Survivorship Bias, meaning that, if you were assessing an exposure doing the follow-up and if you do not pay attention to this, you will assess an exposure that is a proxy of people who lived longer. Meaning that people have enough time, they have a long time, and those who have longer time, will have more time to quit smoking. And then you will be assessing this, actually, not the exposure, but you're only assessing people who quit smoking, and then whatever you assess, you would end up with a beneficial effect. But if you have the time of quitting smoking and follow up and all these statistical things and lower sample size, you are able to account for this very very important bias in epidemiology. Dr. Shannon Westin: Before we go further, I'd love for just a bit of a description of exactly how you laid out your study to really add to where this data are so limited around survival and tobacco cessation. So maybe review the primary/secondary objectives, basic design, just to make sure our listeners are all on the same page. Dr. David Zaridze: The study has classical prospective cohort design that the study, which was basically a basic study, in which the new component was built in. This study used a user's questionnaire-based exposure assessment and molecular epidemiologic approach. I mean that, in addition to the questionnaire approach, we collected blood and tumor tissues for molecular studies. All patients with kidney cancer admitted to the cancer center were interviewed at admission before receiving any treatment. A structured lifestyle questionnaire was used. Participants were asked about their lifetime smoking history which included questions about the duration and frequency of smoking cigarettes, the average number of cigarettes smoked every day. They were also asked about their lifetime history of alcohol drinking. The questions included questions about exposures to carcinogens other than smoking, and health conditions, including chronic kidney diseases, hypertension, diabetes and so on. Height and weight were measured. Today, this study generated and continues to generate plenty of results and papers published in most prestigious journals such as Nature Genetics, for example. So, as you know, we started from 2012, we started the follow up of the cohort members, we were focusing on Moscow residents and the follow-up includes regular annual contacts with the patients personally or via telephone or with patients' household members, etc. Again, we collected information about changes in smoking behavior and disease status. We also used information from the regional cancer registry to confirm the information obtained from patients. The average period of follow up was eight years. And this is quite a long follow-up. Repeated assessment of smoking status reduces the likelihood that exposure to smoking was misclassified. However, regrettably, the self-reported information on smoking was not supported by biochemical tests, for example, by blood cotinine testing. To my knowledge, this is the only prospective cohort study in patients with cancer, not only with kidney cancer that have collected data on participants' smoking status prospectively for quite a long time. The average follow-up time was eight years. Dr. Shannon Westin: That was incredible. That definitely caught my eye. And I was looking, I was like, “Oh, how many did they lose?” And you guys kept 80-100% of the patients. I just was so impressed by that. And now hearing the mechanisms in which you did that, it makes sense. You were very diligent, multiple ways to contact patients and confirm the data. So you really are to be congratulated for the work that you're able to achieve. Dr. Sheikh, I'd love to hear, you talked a little bit about how some of the studies didn't really think about confounding variables. Can you kind of highlight some of the confounding variables that you all controlled for in order to really assess the impact of the cessation on survival? Dr. Mahdi Sheikh: Thanks to the high-quality data and also the large sample size and the way the study was designed, we were able to adjust for a lot of confounding. So we tried to adjust for all these things. So we used three approaches. The first approach was adjustment. When you ran this in the analysis, we tried a statistical model, we tried to adjust for these confounders like age, sex, treatment, socioeconomic status, smoking intensity, alcohol, and other factors. This is one effect, one approach. The second approach was stratification, meaning that we come and see the effect within people who have been diagnosed with only earlier stage tumors to see if the effect among people with earlier stage tumors differs with the effect that we see among people with higher stage tumors. But again, if you read the paper, you see that we saw the protective effects of smoking cessation on both groups of people, those who were diagnosed at earlier stages and those who were diagnosed at later stages. And also heavy smokers or mild to moderate smokers, again, we tried stratified analysis excluding those heavy smokers and saw the effect, again, among those who were light smokers or moderate smokers and also with the heavy smokers. I want to say that we tried all these types of analytical approaches and we really saw the protective effects across all patient subgroups. Finally, I talked again about the survivorship bias. So we used really strict statistical approaches to address this confounding, and because we had the time of quitting, we had the follow up time and all these things. And, again, whatever we did in the study we still could see the effects of smoking and all this is due to the good design, the large sample size, and the good questionnaire data that we have. Dr. Shannon Westin: That's awesome. I think, of course, now let's get to the bottom line. 40% reported that they quit smoking after diagnosis with none relapsing during the time period. And what did you see was the impact on overall survival as well as cancer-specific survival? Dr. Mahdi Sheikh: So we tried several outcomes - overall survival, cancer-specific survival, but also progression-free survival. And then because we had the large sample size we could assess all this. Interestingly, we saw the effect on all the three outcomes that we assessed. So the overall survival was better among those during the quitting time and also the cancer-specific survival was also better and also progression-free survival was better among all these participants. Dr. Shannon Westin: I think most people that have read this paper - and if you haven't read this paper you should run to read it right now - I really was impressed with that kind of clear benefit across cancer-specific mentality across all subgroups regardless of how much they smoked. So I don't know why you get a sense of like, “Oh, if you smoke a little bit you wouldn't see as big of an impact,” but a very clear impact. And I would love to hear why you think smoking negatively impacts these outcomes. How does the cessation help? This is a perfect time for that. Dr. Mahdi Sheikh: When we review the evidence about how smoking cessation may be beneficial for patients, for the survivorship of patients with cancer, we come to five mechanisms that are suggested in the literature. So the first one can be, is suggested, that is altered cancer biology. Smoke and tobacco smoke contain numerous carcinogens and mutagens. So it has been shown that cancer cells that are exposed to tobacco smoke, they may become more aggressive and the risk of metastasis might go higher and also, angiogenesis and all other effects on the biology of cancer cells. So it may affect the cancer cell biology. Another suggested mechanism might be altered immune response. So tobacco smoking affects the immune system and then the immune response among those who are exposed to tobacco might be affected by tobacco smoking. So their response to the cancer cells but also other bacteria, viruses, and other things might be affected as well. The third possible mechanism suggested altered drug metabolism. It has been shown that tobacco smoke and smoking can affect some of the enzymes that have metabolic responsibilities and metabolism of the drugs. So that can affect the washout period for the drug. It might not stay enough in the blood or vice versa as well. It might affect the toxicity. There is some evidence about this. The fourth mechanism suggested is about increasing treating-related complications or treatment-related complications. People who smoke have delayed wound healing, they have more complications, the surgery, the time they spend at the hospital might be longer. And this is also part of which smoking may affect the outcomes that we saw here. And finally, that is we are talking about tobacco smoking and patients with cancer are human beings with all these systems. So we know that smoking causes damage to the cardiovascular system, to the pulmonary system and also to the lungs and other things. So this is why we see different outcomes are affected by cancer. Dr. David Zaridze: I was impressed by the data that exposure to tobacco smoke condensate induces changes in tumor microenvironment. For example, it inhibits formation of interferons, interferon alpha and gamma, inhibits the migration to tumor microenvironment of the immune cells. The number of CD8+ T lymphocytes, T killers, are significantly lower in the tumor microenvironment of current smokers compared to former smokers and never smokers. And even more interestingly, the number of PD-L1+ cells are also lower in the tumor microenvironment of current smokers than former or never smokers. This is probably very important in terms of effectiveness of impairment by smoking of the immunotherapeutic approaches in cancer treatment. Dr. Shannon Westin: That's very important and we know the microenvironment has a huge impact on just the way the cells respond to treatment and develop resistance and so that makes a lot of sense. Okay, well, this has been amazing and I think one thing that you just said just struck me, Dr. Sheikh, that you've obviously shown this in lung cancer and you're looking at this in other cancers. I guess the question is: What should we be doing? How should we be implementing tobacco cessation efforts across all cancer diagnoses to help all patients that have really any diagnosis of cancer? Dr. David Zaridze: Let me first underline the clinical importance of these results. The benefits from quitting smoking are comparable or even superior to those recorded in the clinical trials of modern kidney cancer treatments such as immune checkpoint inhibitors. I refer to the results of pivotal trials in advanced renal cell cancer in the frontline setting and these results were reported at ASCO Meeting 2023 recently in May. If you compare the results of our study with results of these pivotal trials, it is very impressive. It is clear that our findings strengthen the case for making tobacco cessation treatment a standard part of the routine health care for all people with cancer, however, smoking is still quite high in cancer patients. And I would like to quote Peter Shields who is saying that, in the United States,10% to 50% of cancer patients smoke. As far as Russia is concerned, in our study, 80% of kidney cancer patients smoke, and in our lung cancer study, 58% of cancer patients smoke. The barrier is that the oncologists do not believe or are accepting with a great deal of skepticism the results of our study. They don't believe the idea that anything else besides surgical, radiological, or medical treatment could improve the outlook of cancer patients. It's difficult for them to apprehend. Many of them think that smoking cessation after diagnosis is simply a waste of time. Many patients simply don't know that smoking cessation after diagnosis may be beneficial for them. In addition, they are pessimistic and they feel discouraged to quit smoking, as they might think it is too late. I would like to quote my favorite quote: “Smoking cessation treatment has to become the fourth pillar of cancer treatment, one that could affect cancer treatment outcomes as powerfully as surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation therapy.” This is Dr. Fiore, 2019. Dr. Shannon Westin: Thank you so much. And Dr. Sheikh, anything to add there around cessation efforts? Dr. Mahdi Sheikh: As we saw the results of these studies that smoking cessation is feasible and it is accessible at a minimum cost for many patients, it should really be integrated in the management of patients with cancer. It is feasible, it is cheap, it is accessible. But unfortunately, when we review the evidence we see that only less than half of the physicians, like around 40% of physicians, send the patients to tobacco smoking cessation services. And even some do not discuss this issue. And as David mentioned, they do not know the effect of smoking cessation. So when you go through these studies to find the major barriers, in addition to what David had mentioned, we find two important points. First one is lack of education or experience in providing tobacco cessation interventions among those who deal with patients with cancer. So they do not have the education. And second is lack of available resources for referrals. Now we're not only talking about the United States but also many other countries even high-income countries, we do not see the resources for referrals on smoking cessation services in cancer care settings. The take home message probably from this study and also from these barriers, would be for three groups. First, for the policymakers, we would recommend sustainable funding should be dedicated to tobacco cessation services. As we saw, the effect is huge and seems to be a very big effect and it is cheap so why not implement this smoking cessation service within cancer care settings. And the second one, tobacco treatment training programs for healthcare providers. This is also very, very important that we try to implement this training program in the curriculum of healthcare providers, especially those who deal with cancers and tobacco-related outcomes. And also for physicians, we recommend that physicians should assess and address tobacco use in all patients with cancer. They should talk about this topic and also show the benefits of quitting smoking. And patients with cancer who smoke should be supported to stop smoking at any time and each visit after diagnosis is not like some time pass, as we saw, all patient subgroups could benefit from smoking cessation. This is important. But something also very, very important that we shouldn't forget that cancer itself causes a lot of fear and anxiety and stress. And smoking cessation sometimes may be associated with stress and more anxiety. So it is very, very important to think about this point and provide the psychosocial support to patients who quit smoking. Sometimes they may relapse just because of the fear and anxiety they have. So it's not only showing the evidence, but also supporting these patients, telling them how to do that and also supporting them emotionally and also psychosocially. And finally for the patients, I would like to give this message that we see and we know that it is never too late to quit smoking. As David said, patients may feel like, “It is too late now I've developed cancers,” but no, it's really not too late. And if you quit smoking at any time after diagnosis, you would benefit a lot from smoking cessation. Dr. David Zaridze: In the United States there are guidelines, several guidelines for smoking cessation, specifically for cancer patients because smoking cessation in cancer patients is very different from smoking cessation in general population. In the general population, we more or less succeeded, I would say, and we have to look now at this direction to the smoking cessation in cancer patients. And this is a message to WHO, that countries, members of WHO, based on the recommendation guidelines of WHO, develop their own specific guidelines for smoking cessation in cancer patients. And that should be used in all cancer clinics and that should be a must, absolutely important part of anti-cancer treatment. And as I already told, it should be the fourth pillar in cancer treatment, as treatment, as surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Dr. Shannon Westin: Thank you both. That was such a great discussion, and I hope that we've convinced everyone that this is a critical effort that they need to be addressing every day. I just want to thank everyone who listened. Juli. Shinzo Abe wurde auf einer Wahlkampfbühne ermordet. Vom Abtreibungsgesetz in USA wollen wir garnicht sprechen. Was ist eigentlich los hier, Freunde? Asketic co Founder Miķelis Baštiks talking with Head of “Printful” Marketing Raitis Puriņš, about growing a marketing team, building and monetizing your audience.M: Much has already been said about the growth of Printful, but I find your growth as the Marketing Team Leader even more interesting. You started from a very small team of five, now you are more than 100. There are many things to unpack. How to lead a team of five and then switch to a much larger team is a conversation of its own. But how has the daily life changed for you personally? I don't know how much you have reflected upon it yourself, but it would be interesting to hear.R: Since day one my position was the Head of Marketing Unit at Printful, however, when you have a team of five, you're not really a manager. The whole office consisted of 30 or so employees, I was number 35. You're not a manager, you learn to become one afterwards. In the beginning you're thrown into unknown waters and you try to swim out. Along the way you learn to become a manager. The first and most difficult realization is the ability to delegate and trust others. When you really become a manager, you think, okay, this person can do this instead of me. He might do it slower at first or take a different approach, but he will catch on. At first, I always put 100% trust into a person when I give a task. It's not like I let them sink or swim, instead I become a beacon that provides help and checks in to see if he's on the right track. Afterwards he has to grow by himself and you witness the progress. Trust is something to be applied to your own colleagues. M: How does it look in daily life? Do you have daily, weekly check-ins? It's clear you have to trust and provide freedom, but there has to be some accountability. Where have you found the balance?R: We have a framework, at the company there's a presentation “How not to die at Printful”. The idea is that it's better to manage a team of fifty or a project, since the company is so big and one project encompasses a large amount of people. There are a few ways you can look at that. One framework provides that every person has its own goal that he has come here to do and he has to achieve in 3 months, 6 months. He knows what he has to complete. One step further, everyone has a number that drives him. The goal of my team could be revenue. You can influence any team, when you set them a number that they are responsible for. If it's the amount of new clients in Australia, then in becomes your drive and all your activities within the project are focused on that. You never come and talk randomly; you always focus on your goal. Managers don't have to keep everything on their mind - it's all written down, you just check in and see whether your team is on the right track.M: There are so many teams. If one team learns something or tests something, are there any systems for not making the same mistakes twice? Is there a way to transfer the know-how of one team to another when there are so many?R: We provide a blueprint or a framework of previous successful approaches, so you don't have to do your own trial and error; instead you have an outline for your new project. In a rapidly growing company, the only constant is change. You have to be okay with facing changes. Not just because you feel like it, but with purpose to be able to work better. You can't lead a team otherwise, whether those are 5 people or 100. Your manager can change or something else. I know that even I have to constantly keep learning. The rules keep changing, and marketing changes too. I actually like it, the discomfort of not knowing something. No one taught me at school how to lead a marketing team of 100 people. If someone knows such school, let me know. Otherwise you just do you best.M: Of course you learn a lot of things along the way, but can you identify a few things that have helped you on the journey from a single digit team to a three digit team. How did your life look before and how does it look now?R: The main thing that I also remind my project colleagues is that you have to ensure you're your partners share accountability for what you are working on. Another thing I remind my team is that there's no such thing as over-communication, especially internal over-communication. We previously had a situation when the IT team came to me and said that an e-mail should be sent out about an update. Okay, when are you going to launch it? Yesterday. So you were kept out of the loop, because it was assumed that you could do this very quickly anyways. It's important to ensure accountability so that you are aware about a project from day one and can contribute. We also have a huge client support team, more than 200 people globally. The company has to ensure constant internal communication about what you're going to do and what projects are happening, the communication is needed above all. The bigger the team gets, the more important it becomes.M: You once mentioned personal growth and how you sometimes write to marketing managers of big companies to ask something, and most of the time you actually receive answers. Is it something you would do in other areas? Meaning, proactively apply the example of a predecessor. And those times when you have received an answer, what have you learned from your predecessors in different companies, but in the same category or position?R: I have never studied marketing, I know almost no theory, and therefore all I've learned comes from other colleagues, also from my previous workplaces. I don't even remember who gave me the idea that you need a mentor. It's less about learning. When teams are of similar size, we switch charts. It was one of my challenges when my team reached 50 members. Okay, I need a structure for scaling or I will die and won't be able to manage it all. You find out what each team is doing, why it's so large, what works, what doesn't. Secondly, you switch agencies and tools. That allows you to adapt it to yourself. I've also joined several groups, there's a DGMG community for B2B marketing. You can ask your question to the crowd or just search for account based marketing, which isn't a well-known term in Latvia. I don't even know who I could ask that in Latvia. This allows you to gain more from real people who have done this, instead from a blog post, where you don't know if this information has been used in practice.M: What else has helped you to learn and grow along the way? This is a cool example of reaching out and learning from the experience of others. But is there anything else?R: Experiments, for example. Often we don't know if something would work and get good results. You just try and see whether it would work. You learn from mistakes. There are projects from last year where I have lost more than 100 000 dollars, without bringing any gain to the company. But I know I have spent several millions that have benefitted us.M: If you could go get coffee with three marketing people from around the world, who would they be?R: I'm more interested in branding right now. I would like to understand performance checks, I like to measure all technical things. If you're spending a lot of money for Super Bowl ads, you need a good justification for that and need to know how to do it correctly. From the branding point of view, my favourite is Coca-Cola. It's the reason why Santa Claus is wearing a red suit. Amazing! Also Apple. The product plays a big part of it, but they're also doing cool things with the brand.M: If you're more interested in branding now, could you unpack the topics that you're interested in?R: Many say that brand comes from the management. At Printful, the management is me. If I want to invest a bigger team, resources or money in this, then I need strong arguments for why we're going to do this. We'll see the results after three, four years, so why do we need to invest a large amount of money, since the market is huge. I still can't do this. It's not like we don't have a brand. The brand is everything that the company has done all these years. But I'm still missing something for us to scale and do it correctly. The right people, the right team? I don't know.M: You said there are 8 regions. Is the brand the same everywhere or do you build it differently for each region?R: We don't think about branding in each region that much, we like the framework “jobs to be done”. We try to find a person who we can help in achieving what he wants.M: Can you tell me more about the framework “jobs to be done”? How do you implement it in practice?R: First, you want to create an e-commerce shop, maybe you have an Instagram following you want to sell to or an existing business, or you want to create a merch line. Second, you want to order something for yourself. We enable you to do that easily, but you need to find answers to many questions. Who will you sell the shirt to? Do you have a design to print? How will you integrate it? For how much will you sell? Then you have to bring people to the website to buy something. A side-product from all this is that we educate clients. The marketing team is teaching others about marketing. All our resources are directed this way. It's much more beneficial to think about the person's dream than to think about benefitting from them driving a BWM. That's why we're very focused on this work. M: You have mentioned content marketing as one of the things you're doing. Do you still think it's working? When looking at the marketing landscape, do you see other things to focus on in the future? R: Content marketing is everywhere, including what we're doing. It's something you polish and put out. Content marketing can be measured in many different ways. The best effect is when any text that we publish in a blog or on website gets indexed on Google. That enables you to first find Printful in organic results just by searching. In content marketing you also create your image. I, by being in podcasts, am creating an image of being an expert on some topic, which makes people want to talk to me. It's similar for companies. If you create content about something, people will have an opinion about you, which goes along with branding. Okay, they know about this thing, probably I should work with them to ensure quality. You just have to create content, otherwise you won't understand what you have to do here. The idea of starting an e-commerce shop is great, but there a lot of ways to do it. The content helps us guide the creator through this tunnel towards a shop and making sales. M: What would be a go-to for potential clients who would like to create a new brand to be sold through Printful and create their content marketing?R: You have to build an audience. I don't have many examples nor experience, but many successful examples show that you can, for example, grow an Instagram account for dog-lovers and monetize it. You need a data base. You can also build hype by making an e-mail list, because you have to start somewhere, e-mail can't be your main channel. You can't send to some list, it has to be legal. The next channels are channels based on captured interest. From paid channels I can mention Google, which allows you to be found as an interesting author through searching. Then it's about whether the content on the website is enough. You create and all the elements mix together. It's hard to name one. Everything is organic game. It won't happen in one day. You'll see the results in the next few months. It's a long-term work.M: Printful grew very quickly, in just a couple of years. Was it a coincidence of showing up in the right time with the right product? Or was it the skill? I wonder if another company from a different category could duplicate what you did to grow five times or ten times quicker as they would otherwise?R: One mould that we have is “solve your problem”. Before Printful, there was Startup Vitamins, which still sells motivational posters. We needed them, because the offices of Draugiem.lv needed cool posters. Every cool office had those, so we needed them too. Didn't have them, so we designed some and started to sell. We did okay overall. We mostly printed posters, so we started to think about t-shirts and other things. I started searching for someone who could do it on demand, because we didn't know if they would sell. This niche turned out to be quite empty, so we decided to take it. Because again, what we're doing – we're solving our problem. The solution is so simple. In the end we printed our shirts, but it was planned out to be as fast and efficient as possible and with less costs.M: Do you feel a difference between the environments of Asia, Europe and North America when it comes to your clients?R: We haven't really delved into that. There might reasons why one is more successful and one isn't, but there aren't any cardinal differences. These reasons are mostly general. In japan, in order to switch your full-time job you need a special reason. In USA, side-hustling is very typical, you need to have an extra job to survive. You can drive an Uber or create an e-commerce shop. While in Germany and Scandinavia, you don't have such motivation. If you're happy with your job, you just have a beer and rest in your free time. You have other reasons for using Printful. In Germany, you need trust badges on your website for them to believe you're legit. There are some specifics, but it's not mainstream and isn't affecting much. We adapt.M: When you talked about brand development and marketing, one of the ways to grow a brand is word-of-mouth. One of your clients has successfully built his business. I think you mentioned that your tagline is “be your own boss”. This one successful person tells it to someone else, who also finds courage to try. For a company as big as yours, is such word-of-mouth still an important channel and tool?R: 100% yes! We might be big in Latvia, but the niche we can fill is still very small. How many e-commerce people in the world would sell printed goods and know about Printful? Not many. So this requires a constant drive. Social media stars rise every day nowadays, and they have an audience that can be reached more easily than ever, therefore it is important. The best approach is to be good at what you do. There's a guy who did a built-in kitchen for me. I have recommended him to at least 7 people, just because I'm satisfied with his job. If someone has a need, I will recommend him. And so it continues. It's the same for a company. It just happens in a bigger scale. When there's a chance to make a recommendation and someone has had good experience with you, he will recommend you, because it's something new he hasn't seen before. They become brand ambassadors. You don't pay them, you can only motivate them to do this more.M: This big trend of “creative economy” goes hand in hand with what you are doing with building an audience. MrBeast just launched his chocolate brand, which is super successful. He has built an enormous audience on YouTube, he launches one product after another. He has a chocolate or snack company. When you look at this category and also what you're doing with personalization and enabling people to be their own boss, do you see how this category develops and how big is the potential?R: That's one of the reasons why us too are developing and growing. Building an audience nowadays is much easier than it was twenty years ago. You can use the thing you have created – video, music, design –to captivate this person who wants to be associated with you, and, brutally speaking, you can monetize it. The ultimate goal is business. You create an audience and monetize it. One of my favourite examples recently are musicians. Musicians inspire passion in people. You follow them. If you like the music, you go to concerts and are ready to spend money. There are a lot of music bands, any one of them can start offering their merch.M: You've experienced an amazing and quick growth during the last five years. Do you have a vision for the following five years?R: We spend such a big part of life working. But in the end you work in order to be able to rest and live. The one thing on my plan is that I need more vacation days. If you work so much, you need time for resting, enjoy the fruits of your labour, spend time with family. There is still a lot of potential in Printful for development so you don't get bored. At some point I will address that too. M: What helped you to overcome the desire to do everything by yourself? I think that a lot of practical people are stuck in this bottleneck and are not ready to release the control.R: For example, if you have to send an e-mail, we agree on a period for doing it. Let's say, I will do it by Friday, but we agree that you will send me the contents by Thursday. If you are aware of the time period when it will happen and get this information, then you don't have to worry whether everything will be done on time. You just get a message that this is done. This has to be agreed upon. Then you can be sure that this person will check in with you that the text is ready, and on Friday you can confirm that everything is done. There have been occasions when I start writing e-mails and then have to edit this and that. When you start to delegate, the thing that you're afraid of is that something won't be done at all or in the quality you want. You just have to introduce these middle points. And any of these points can have a deadline. This way you can free your mind, because the computer will notify you at the right time. And you do the same thing with your team. You just write things down, you don't try to keep 10 things in mind. You say, this is our structure, these are the tasks, and this is the next step. By this time you have to do the following. If not, then you can start to micro-manage something else. That's where the trust comes from, just go through the game rules.M: Thank you.R: Cool, thank you.Raitis Puriņšhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/raitispurins/?originalSubdomain=lvhttps://www.printful.com/Subscribe to Asketic Podcast on:Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/show/73QSMYK46NHoHCytJYYmPZ?si=Mw4ZLISUSoueh9Es1pCLUgApple Podcast:https://podcasts.apple.com/lv/podcast/asketic-podcast/id1496922775YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQdekksSROS4PCxRV7aqT3QGoogle Podcasts:https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy50cmFuc2lzdG9yLmZtL2Fza2V0aWMtcG9kY2FzdA--Asketic design & branding:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/asketicstudio/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asketic/WWW: http://asketic.com/

The unique geographic positioning creates a fertile delta and is one of the hottest parts of Canada making it one of the most desirable locations in North America for an outdoor cultivator. The location provides several benefits: Low Elevation At 500m above sea level, our valley is one of the lowest in the Kootenay Boundary region and as such, it lends itself to an extended growing season that typically spans up to 8 months of the year. Consistent Breezes We receive a consistent breeze from the southern-facing valley that aids in the structural development of our plants as well as their respiration cycles and pest control. Low Precipitation With a low average rainfall of 500mm, 54% of which takes place over the winter, our outdoor crops are less susceptible to water damage, mildew and rot. Ample Sunshine Thanks to the characteristics of our latitudinal valley, our location is exposed to a prolonged abundance of full-spectrum sunshine. Protective Valleys Nestled in a lush private setting, our 32-acre starting property is protected from the influences of outside industries.

Reasons to Investigate Selling Internationally on Amazon - The opportunity - intro Amazon stats 2019 Amazon GMV 2019 worldwide was 280.5 Billion USD All of Amazon outside USA: Was 87B USD GMV in 2019 (31% of total) Amazon International selling summit: Global Empires Summit - Hosted by Kevin Sanderson My presentation for Summit: Overview of some lessons from the British Empire - the 4 horsemen - - and the “Merchant Mindset” BASH - and Merchant Skills that you need…. Why consider Amazon selling internationally? Reason 1: Additional Revenue - USA is about ⅔ of total - So even on average, you could add another ⅓ or so to sales by being fully diversified Reason 2: one of the easiest ways to expand - Identifying a market is hard - Getting a quality, differentiated product is really hard - Doing so profitably even harder! - Expanding once you've done all that EVEN in an era of more bureacracy is easier - Mostly because you can outsource the bureaucracy (tactical) but you CAN'T really outsource great sourcing (strategic) Reason 3: Profits/low competition - Fewer competitors in some places. Barriers to entry. - Inertia - Language barrier. EU Japan - Cultural barrier. Japan - VAT/Sales tax etc. barriers. EU. Japan etc - Strong currency EUR/DE - Wealthy consumers (EUR/DE) Reason for Amazon Selling Internationally: Diversifying Risk Reason 4: Currency risk - Diversifying risk 1 - Fluctuations - GBP to USD - Currency being punished - GBP! - EUR to USD tight range last few years Reason 5: COVID Risk Diversification - Diversifying risk 2 - Demand shock - US helicopter money coming to end - UK furlough coming to end - UK GDP sank 20% in Q2 2020! - USA only 10% - Supply shock - Fr. And IT FCs shutdown height of COVID spring 2020 - US FC - US FC shutdowns to come? Reason 6: Amazon Suspension Risk - Diversifying Risk 3 - Reduce single-Amazon marketplace dependence - Individual countries can change regulations and lead to suspended listings - Eg Hazmat in Germany for client account - In USA, same exact product selling, no issues - An entire marketplace Amazon account can be suspended while others remain open Reason 7: Cashflow/Working Capital trick - MOQs - profit per unit - Stock turn (cashflow) - WC - function of profit and stock turn Cost-Benefit analysis Upside (Benefit) assessment - Possible upside - Probability - Downside assessment (Cost) - How bad it could be - Possibility 3 Amazon overseas expansion opportunities - low hanging fruit Canada for US based sellers - Physically close so can affordably send stock - Straightforward. Helpful customs agents in Govt. - Speak English For UK sellers: Germany is a huge market Bigger than say Italy But similar costs/time to comply with VAT registration - All things being equal, better value Etc etc For all sellers - Japan - About same size as U.K. market GMV - 2 weeks shipping time to China. This is huge for cashflow!! - Only 10% sales tax on import cf 20% VAT into U.K. or EU - no research tools. Most sellers stay out. Again huge. Next steps Get informed about international Amazon Global Empires Summit - Hosted by Kevin Sanderson My presentation for Summit: Overview of some lessons from the British Empire - the 4 horsemen - - and the “Merchant Mindset” BASH - and Merchant Skills that you need…. Upcoming Interviews on 10K Collective podcast about Amazon International Selling Simply VAT about VAT in general, EU in particular and Brexit on 10K Collective Brexit - selling into OR from inside the UK Sales Tax update (selling in USA) Get expert help to start selling on Amazon abroad - Tax specialists - Freight forwarder (internationally) - Cultural expert (Esp for Japan) - General strategic guidance (coach)

In USA and elsewhere in the world now feeling the sting of the deadly COVID-19 virus that some poor unfortunate and most probably innocent people in Wuhan, Hubei Province China unleashed on the world, there is growing apprehension that what is unknown about the pandemic continues to out- pace any true understanding of the virus. Amidst latest reports that possibly a virus lab located just three miles from that wet market where the Chinese Communist Party claims the COVID-19 Pandemic originated from bats, may have unleashed the virus is just too horrible to imagine but the story appeared this week in The Washington Times. As the world experiences one thing “Made in China” that we all could have done without, COVID-19 has caused pain, suffering and death everywhere. But now in USA where spread of the coronavirus is reportedly worse than anywhere else, the land of plenty is indeed just that as the government is sending the equivalent of USD$3400 to every family of four in the biggest cash giveaway in history. By contrast in Kenya where the coronavirus disease has also struck, and where a great many workers have already been sent home without pay, the pandemic has impacted people’s ability to provide the necessities of life, including food to eat. “The economic consequences of the COVID-19 Nairobi shutdown. especially for the people to whom we provide medical care and care in our homes, are completely incalculable,” Lufthansa Cargo Captain Fokko Doyen who founded Cargo Human Care the greatest charity in our industry told me. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/geoffrey-arend/support

In Italia? Almost any article on a pressing national crisis ends with some expert saying, "We must do something." By "we" they mean the national government. The fact is, most governments haven't solved problems for years. They only try to put out fires that they or their voters have set. In USA, the fire is Trump; in UK, it is Brexit. Most national problem-solving has ended, and Glenn Campbell argues that it won't be back. The only "we" that can still be effective is local, not national.
Ram Menen has seen many seasons come and go, spending more than two decades first as part of the launch team and then as top executive of Emirates SkyCargo where he led that organization to the top of the world. Today, happily retired in Luxembourg and Kuala Lumpur, Ram is a much sought after air cargo executive that readily shares his take on 2019 in an exclusive FlyingTalkers interview. Neel Jones Shah is a smart guy and a dreamer and doer. He is no shrinking violet either, but rather someone who is actively on the front lines of change, having moved rather easily from top management at the airlines into top management at the wunderkind bunch at Flexport where he serves as EVP and Global Head of Airfreight. Once upon a time, Neel as the head of Delta Cargo, led approximately 2,000 employees worldwide and oversaw over $1 Billion in freight & mail revenues. In USA, Bake Me A Wish, headquartered in New York City began in 2005, offering nationwide service for gourmet birthday cake delivery nationwide . During the past 14 plus years the company has grown to offer more and more of the finest bakery gifts available including gourmet cookies, brownies, cupcakes, pies and quiches. “There is no better way to celebrate a special occasion than to send a little indulgence from someone who cares,” said company founder Josh Kaye. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/geoffrey-arend/support
Welcome to Finance and Fury, The Furious Friday edition Continuing SDGs – today we are covering Economics or SDG 8 First, look at the economics of the UN itself – something never talked about Who pays for the UN – Member states - A complex formula - US pays most at 22%-28% of the UN's different budgets Aus - Regular budget for AUD - $86m (rough estimate) in 2016 - $58m USD – not too much But the official budget doesn’t include other donations – Gov agency voluntary contributions (specified or unspecified) – all revenues from government donors – Total was $747m p.a. USD ($1.1bn) – across 21 UN organisations A lot of money being shipped to UN when we have a desperate need to more infrastructure and helping create more liveable areas outside of Cities – Up from $601m in 2014 – massively increased - UN revenues massively increased – What does the UN spend money on? 2016, the organisation's total expenditures was nearly $50 billion, with the US financing about $10 billion, or one fifth, of that. Even with costs surging fourfold in the last 20 years – expenditures have been compounding at 7.8% p.a. since 1976 UN plans - Economic growth and decent work – SDG 8 Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all. World Pensions Council (WPC) development economists have argued that the twin considerations of long-term economic growth and infrastructure investment weren’t prioritized enough – Plan is growth through full employment on infrastructure projections 2020 Target - to reduce youth unemployment and operationalise a global strategy for youth employment. Implementing the Global Jobs Pact of the International Labour Organization is also mentioned. 2030 target - to establish policies for sustainable tourism that will create jobs. Strengthening domestic financial institutions and increasing Aid for Trade support for developing countries is considered essential to economic development (not for us though, but other nations). Implementing an Enhanced Integrated Framework for Trade-Related Technical Assistance to Least Developed Countries is their method for achieving sustainable economic development UN say that $5trn a year is needed – mobilise a lot more than currently being spent – essentially mass redistribution At this economic model’s core - Global redistribution of GDP – push out lower-paying jobs to be outsourced by AI or by globalisation Built around David Ricardo's Comparative advantage theory from 1817 – Spent 4.5y doing Commerce – Finance also Economics – International Trade and Finance – Knew the right answers on the tests – That comparative advantage should benefit both parties if done right How the theory works – which argued that countries should specialise in the production of goods in which they have a relative advantage over other countries in production - promoting benefits of international trade Example – Back then a mutual trade benefit would be realised between China and the United Kingdom from China specialising in the production of porcelain and tea and the United Kingdom concentrating on machine parts. Makes sense right? In the 90s China for low wages in manufacturing/production and west for Service-based economy But what the theory doesn’t account for – Not 1817 – Capital (money) is easy to transfer across borders – Technology as well – With Capital comes technology (FDI) – China as an example – FDI and increase in tech – outproduce across board – but slowly wages rise in china – so do costs – so production leapfrogs to another country with lower wages – so previous country stagnates in wages and growth – then new country goes through the same cycle - so on – race to the bottom – takes a while – Has been happening since 1975 – Lima Accord – set the framework for the movement of capital and technology to developing nations – which are the labour cost in comparative countries Modern Robin Hood – But you are the rich when compared to the third world UN has engineered the decline of the Comparative Advantage efficiency – simply a beggar thy neighbour policy now that creates downward pressures on wages globally – Name of Globalism The offshoring of jobs has reduced Australian (USA, UK, other 1st world nations) manufacturing and industrial capability and associated innovation, research, development, supply chains, consumer purchasing power, and tax base of state and local governments – technology comes from engineering and not science (especially climate science) Comparative advantage Creates a Focus of Multi-national companies on short-term profits at the expense of these long-term costs – Effect of moving our economies to the developing world Currency and taxes come into this – Today Media calling tariffs a trade war - There is no trade war – simply the US trying to protect their industries by placing tariff barriers on the import of cheaper products from foreign countries The irony is half of the imports from China are imports from US companies – US at war with US companies – go figure Evident that our economies are in decline – GDP growth slowing as over decades our manufacturing/industrial/engineering capability has been transferred abroad. Our demise is what is fuelling countries like China - owes it faster than expected rise as a world power to the transfer of jobs, capital, technology, and business know-how to China Jobs have been declining for years in terms of value-added and pay – creates aggregate demand decline (lower GDP growth) Proof from listed companies using profits not for investment in new plant and equipment, but to buy back their own shares or make once-off dividend payments Economic growth comes from a rising labour force participation rate and engineering innovation – More people earning more money – better productivity than more money on top - Governments tried Aggregate demand model of redistribution (UBI proposed) – more likely Government work programs (infrastructure projects) – Gov projects force minimum wages – offer $15 in USA – employees have to now compete with gov – unfair as they are contributing through taxes to fund their own demise – What if the work isn’t worth $15 USA an hour? In USA – offer insurances and benefits – making it even harder for small businesses to complete But this wage capped and unaffordable –has to come from taxes – and would also be taxed – making it an inefficient redistribution – but does increase size and importance/reliance on Gov Perfect socialist world we would all get $100k p.a. for not working – but resources aren’t infinite As costs of labour increase in developing countries (i.e. china wage rises) – to maximise profits – wage regulations in developed countries further compound the decline in employment and wages Which is where it gets worse when combined with the implementation of recommended policies within the higher labour cost countries Decent work – the work that is funded by the Gov- limits free-market choices when Government competes – Almost like having a Communist Nation and fee market operating at the same time - From the club of Rome – Watched their online lectures – available on the LinkedIn learning centres – not hiding it – just have to look Shorten the length of the work year and raise the retirement ages Redefine ‘paid work’ to cover those who care for others at home and Increase unemployment benefits Increase the taxation to redistribute profits – introduce death taxes Tax fossil energy to make low-carbon energy more competitive – higher prices (no different to tariffs) Shift taxes from employment to emissions and resource Increase death taxes to reduce inequality and philanthropy while boosting government income Expand the use of green stimulus packages by printing money or raising taxes to help governments respond to climate change and the need for redistribution Encourage unionization and restrict trade and business where necessary With no employment or wage growth – where will growth come from? Same as last 30 years - Mostly debt – Some UN current donations from Governments – Also have infrastructure spending access from Supers, tax – next ep Mostly debt fuel growth through massive government infrastructure spending – employ people in the employment plans at higher than market wages with insurances and benefits (higher super counts) – all at additional costs to Gov budgets Plus more and more regulation – John Stossel did a great interview with entrepreneurs in Africa – Inequality they face is competition from the West through free stuff (can't compete with free) and Government regulations – which leads to corruption – only way to get things done is through bribes or having millions to get around regulations/paying the fines The whole of Economic growth in 21st century is expansion through Government spending and debt – cheap credit but consumer income has not kept pace and consumer debt expansion has reached its limits – at 120% The core is to try and keep the debt-based economy going – IMF SDRs spending massive amounts of money on the next great social program – some referred to it as the great leap forward – create higher inflation again, then inflate the current debts away over time – also is the next step in a one-world currency – if they gain legitimacy and become the global reserve currency like China and Russia want Governments try to increase asset prices through printing money But this doesn’t increase production, as jobs and economic activity don’t exist anymore Just makes the property and other assets more expensive for us – while pushing up costs of living Next is to drive growth through reindustrialisation – global infrastructure works and climate change action – Growth driven by debt – FDR style – Great Society programs of mass Gov employment – at expense of population and companies paying for those wages – Gov spending comes form you or borrowing in your name Last next part is to merge Governments and companies – Fascism 101 – but only approved companies – create a completely controlled economy Through the consumption and production outlines in the circular economy Take away – Governments have proved to only be economic destruction houses – long history of getting it wrong and creating economic decline slowly over time with equilibrium policies – So why give them even more control and power over the economy and our lives? Other take away – Policies to fuel world GDP growth through more ‘beggar they neighbour’ policy – Take advantage through investing in Asian/developing markets and infrastructure companies – more on this next Friday Thanks for listening – Next week – go through infrastructures and the inequality angle If you want to get in contact, you can here. Unethical Chinese Amazon Black Hat Tactics with Kevin King Contents: Amazon Black hat in China - What Chinese sellers are learning Amazon's response to Black Hat Is it worth spending time worrying about Unethical black hat tactics in Amazon? Yes it is serious. Kevin likes to keep to white hat on Amazon. But he likes to know what’s Chinese Amazon sellers are doing. Amazon Black Hat training in Canton Kevin was speaking at the MDS - Million dollar seller group with Brandon Young They were invited to an event. It’s a weekly meeting on Amazon black hat tactics- and there were 1300 people there! It was a Sunday meeting - and it was all about reviews. The following meeting completely new topic. Chinese Communist Party is involved with Amazon Black Hat Strategies They were in a side room with a promoter. Then Kevin heard a loudspeaker - the Communist Party turned up. If you have over 1000 people at a gathering, you’re required to ask the Communist Party. Being a good citizen - like a mini pep rally. In USA, they pledge allegiance; in UK, you might sing something! [not really! - ed.] Professional events for Amazon Black Hat There are 1300 people - nice room, 5 screens (like a big football match) - host is beautiful. The 5-6 speakers that spoke (in Chinese) were all about getting reviews with Amazon Black Hat tactics. These guys paid 30 RMB - $6-7 to come to the event The info was things that in the USA, Europe, you’d pay $5-10K to learn! Kevin and Brendon presented on white -hat tactics - using Manychat (Brendon) and postcards (Kevin). To check out the "Helium10 Elite" online mastermind (formerly "Illuminati Mastermind") lead by Kevin King and Manny Coates, go to https://pages.helium10.com/register-elite?crsh_reqid=374520 Chinese style product research The next day they did a special event for $300 each About 60 people came. Brendon asked: how are you finding products? Their system was look on Jungle Scout to figure out what to sell - get it made - and then use Black hat techniques to get it launched. Amazon Black hat tactics being taught in China How to get 2000 buyer accounts. How to get 2000 credit card numbers eg bank of America will give you 600 of them! They have the inside SOPs from Amazon. eg “Don’t leave a review within 14 days” However, most don’t do social media. Why Chinese sellers use Amazon black hat techniques One of the guys came over to the hotel - been in Wall Street Journal - spoke to a few of the guys. Kevin asked him point blank - How do we compete with Amazon black hat users in China? Why are they teaching black hat in China? The reason why is “because it’s super competitive in China. There are 1.4 B people here! Also we’re “communist capitalists” - if we see an opportunity to make money, we need to grab it. We’re not trying to build a brand. We don’t care about having 50 amazon accounts. Also, we don’t know whether the Chinese gov’t will make it illegal or tax us a lot. “ In the US or UK, economies more democratic. The situation in China is different. Amazon Seller Black hat users - who is doing this? Most of the 1300 people at the event turned out to work for big companies - Kevin’s US friends say: Only about 60 companies in China cause all the issues. There is one doing $1B sales. They have 3 floors of a building, with 1000 people per floor. They have people responsible for 5 products on Amazon; same products on eBay, 5 other guys. Also they work almost non-stop - “9X9X6” - 12 hours a day, 6 days a week (9 am -9pm) Work for $1000 a month! Launching product after product - don’t care if 4/5 fail. Amazon courting Chinese factories Amazon is courting Chinese sellers - lightning deals etc. Amazon is all about giving the customers the best price - that’s why they’re courting the Chinese so heavily. Marketplace plus - 40% of all active Amazon seller accounts are coming out of China.

This week on the show, we'll be talking to Petra about the NetBSD foundation, about how they operate and assist NetBSD behind the scenes. That plus lots of news This episode was brought to you by Headlines What is new on EC2 for FreeBSD 11.0-RELEASE (http://www.daemonology.net/blog/2016-10-03-FreeBSD-EC2-11-0-RELEASE.html) “FreeBSD 11.0-RELEASE is just around the corner, and it will be bringing a long list of new features and improvements — far too many for me to list here. I think there are some improvements in FreeBSD 11.0 which are particularly noteworthy for EC2 users.” “First, the EC2 Console Screenshot functionality now works with FreeBSD. This provides a "VGA" output as opposed to the traditional "serial port" which EC2 has exposed as "console output" for the past decade, and is useful largely because the "VGA" output becomes available immediately whereas the "serial port" output can lag by several minutes. This improvement is a simple configuration change — older releases didn't waste time writing to a non-serial console because it didn't go anywhere until Amazon added support on their side — and can be enabled on older FreeBSD releases by changing the line console="comconsole" to boot_multicons="YES" in /boot/loader.conf.” “The second notable change is support for EC2 "Enhanced Networking" using Intel 82599 hardware; on the C3, C4, R3, I2, D2, and M4 (excluding m4.16xlarge) families, this provides increased network throughput and reduced latency and jitter, since it allows FreeBSD to talk directly to the networking hardware rather than via a Xen paravirtual interface. Getting this working took much longer than I had hoped, but the final problem turned out not to be in FreeBSD at all — we were tickling an interrupt-routing bug in a version of Xen used in EC2. Unfortunately FreeBSD does not yet have support for the new "Elastic Network Adapter" enhanced networking used in P2 and X1 instance families and the m4.16xlarge instance type; I'm hoping that we'll have a driver for that before FreeBSD 11.1 arrives.” “The third notable change is an improvement in EC2 disk throughput. This comes thanks to enabling indirect segment I/Os in FreeBSD's blkfront driver; while the support was present in 10.3, I had it turned off by default due to performance anomalies on some EC2 instances. (Those EC2 performance problems have been resolved, and disk I/O performance in EC2 on FreeBSD 10.3 can now be safely improved by removing the line hw.xbd.xbdenableindirect="0" from /boot/loader.conf.)” “Finally, FreeBSD now supports all 128 CPUs in the x1.32xlarge instance type. This improvement comes thanks to two changes: The FreeBSD default kernel was modified in 2014 to support up to 256 CPUs (up from 64), but that resulted in a (fixed-size) section of preallocated memory being exhausted early in the boot process on systems with 92 or more CPUs; a few months ago I changed that value to tune automatically so that FreeBSD can now boot and not immediately panic with an out-of-the-box setup on such large systems.” “I think FreeBSD/EC2 users will be very happy with FreeBSD 11.0-RELEASE; but I'd like to end with an important reminder: No matter what you might see on FTP servers, in EC2, or available via freebsd-update, the new release has not been released until you see a GPG-signed email from the release engineer. This is not just a theoretical point: In my time as a FreeBSD developer I've seen multiple instances of last-minute release re-rolls happening due to problems being discovered very late, so the fact that you can see bits doesn't necessarily mean that they are ready to be downloaded. I hope you're looking forward to 11.0-RELEASE, but please be patient.” *** Upgrading Amazon EC2 instance from 10.3 to 11.0-PRERELEASE results in hang at boot (https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=213196) As if to underscore that last point, a last minute bug was found on sunday night A user reported that they used freebsd-update to upgrade an EC2 instance from 10.3 to 11.0 and it started hanging during boot After some quick investigation by Colin, the problem was reproduced Since I had done a lot of work in the loader recently, I helped Colin build a version of the loader with a lot of the debugging enabled, and some more added to try to isolate where in the loader the freeze was happening Colin and I worked late into the night, but eventually found the read from disk that was causing the hang Unlike most of the other reads, that were going into the heap, this read was into a very low memory address, right near the 640kb border. This initially distracted us from the real cause of the problem With more debugging added, it was determined that the problem was in the GELIBoot code, when reading the last sector of each partition to determine if it is encrypted. In cases where the partition is not 4k aligned, and butts up against the end of the disk, the formula used could result in a read past the end of the disk The formula rounds the last sector byte address down to the nearest factor of 4096, then reads 4096 bytes. Then that buffer is examined to determine if the partition is encrypted. If it is a 512b sector drive, the metadata will be in the last 512 bytes of that 4096 byte buffer. However, if the partition is not 4k aligned, the rounding will produce a value that is less than 4096 bytes from the end of the disk, and attempting to read 4096 bytes, will read past the end of the disk Normally this isn't that big of a problem, the BIOS will just return an error. The loader will retry up to three times, then give up and move on, continuing to boot normally. Some BIOSes are buggy, and will initiate their own retries, and the combination might result in a stall of up to 30 seconds for each attempt to read past the end of the disk But it seems that Amazon EC2 instances, (and possibly other virtual instances), will just hang in this case. This bug has existed for 6 months, but was not caught because almost all installations are 4k aligned thanks to changes made to the installer over the last few years, and most hardware continues to boot with no sign of a problem Even the EC2 snapshot images of 11.0 do not have the problem, as they use a newer disk layout that is 4k aligned by default now. The problem only seems to happen when older disk images are upgraded The fix has been committed and will be merged the the branches over the next few days An Errata notice will be issues, and the fix will be available via freebsd-update It is recommended that EC2 users, and anyone who wants to be especially cautious, wait until this errata notice goes out before attempting to upgrade from FreeBSD 10.3 to 11.0 You can determine if your partitions are 4k aligned by running ‘gpart show'. If there is free space after your last partition, you won't have any issues. *** OpenBSD 6.0 Limited Edition CD set (signed by developers) (http://undeadly.org/cgi?action=article&sid=20160929230557&mode=expanded) The first one went for .$4,200.00 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/-/331985953783) + Looking for your piece of OpenBSD history? At the recent g2k16 hackathon in Cambridge UK, 40 OpenBSD developers put pen to paper and signed 5 copies of the new 6.0 release. + Each of these will be auctioned off on ebay, with the proceeds to benefit the OpenBSD foundation. + The first auction has already ended, and CD set went for a whopping $4200! + The next set only has 2 days left, and currently stands at $3000! (http://www.ebay.com/itm/-/331990536246) + Get your bids in soon, these are VERY unique, the odds of getting the same 40 developers in a room together and signing a new .0 release may make this a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. + Additionally, if you are just starting your OpenBSD collection, here's a nice image to make you envious: A nice collection of OpenBSD CD Sets (http://i.imgur.com/OrE0Gsa.png) [What typing ^D really does on Unix ](https://utcc.utoronto.ca/~cks/space/blog/unix/TypingEOFEffects) + How often have you used a ^D to generate an EOF? Do you really know what that does? + Chris Siebenmann has posted a look at this on his blog, which might not be what you think “Typing ^D causes the tty driver to immediately finish a read().” He continues on: Normally doing a read() from a terminal is line-buffered inside the tty driver; your program only wakes up when the tty driver sees the newline, at which point you get back the full line. (Note that this buffering is distinct from anything that your language's IO system may be doing.) Typing ^D causes the tty driver to stop waiting for a newline and immediately return from the read() with however much of the line has been accumulated to date. If you haven't typed anything on the line yet, there is nothing accumulated and the read() will return 0 bytes, which is conveniently the signal for end of file. If you have typed something the program will get it; because it doesn't have a trailing newline, the program's own line-buffering may take over and keep read()ing to get the rest of the line. (Other programs will immediately process the partial line with no buffering; cat is one example of this.) Once you've typed ^D on a partial line, that portion of the line is immutable because it's already been given to the program. Most Unixes won't let you backspace over such partial lines; effectively they become output, not input. (Note that modern shells are not good examples of this, because they don't do line-buffered input; to support command line editing, they switch terminal input into an uninterpreted mode. So they get the raw ^D and can do whatever they want with it, and they can let you edit as much of the pending line as they want.) Fascinating stuff, and interesting to see behind the curtain at exactly what's going on with your programs buffering and tty driver interaction. Interview - Petra Zeidler - spz@netbsd.org (mailto:spz@netbsd.org) NetBSD Foundation *** News Roundup Running FreeBSD in Travis-CI Thanks to KQEmu (http://erouault.blogspot.com/2016/09/running-freebsd-in-travis-ci.html) Travis-CI is the most popular testing framework on Github, but it doesn't support any of the BSDs This didn't discourage Even Rouault, who managed to run FreeBSD in KQEMU on the Linux instances provided by Travis-CI “Travis-CI has a free offer for software having public repository at GitHub. Travis-CI provides cloud instances running Linux or Mac OS X. To increase portability tests of GDAL, I wondered if it was somehow possible to run another operating system with Travis-CI, for example FreeBSD. A search lead me to this question (https://github.com/travis-ci/travis-ci/issues/1818) in their bug tracker but the outcome seems to be that it is not possible, nor in their medium or long term plans.” “One idea that came quickly to mind was to use the QEMU machine emulator that can simulate full machines, of several hardware architectures.” They found an existing image of FreeBSD 9.2 and configured the Travis job to download it and fire it up in QEMU. “Here we go: ./configure && make ! That works, but 50 minutes later (the maximum length of a Travis-CI job), our job is killed with perhaps only 10% of the GDAL code base being compiled. The reason is that we used the pure software emulation mode of QEMU that involves on-the-fly disassembling of the code to be run and re-assembling.” Travis-CI runs in Google Compute Engine, which does not allow nested virtualization, so hardware virtualization is not an option to speed up QEMU “Here comes the time for good old memories and a bit of software archeology. QEMU was started by Fabrice Bellard. If you didn't know his name yet, F. Bellard created FFMPEG and QEMU, holds a world record for the number of decimals of Pi computed on a COTS PC, has ported QEMU in JavaScript to run the Linux kernel in your browser, devised BPG, a new compression based on HEVC, etc....” “At the time where his interest was focused on QEMU, he created KQemu, a kernel module (for Linux, Windows, FreeBSD hosts), that could significantly enhance QEMU performance when the guest and hosts are x86/x86_64 and does not require (nor use) hardware virtualization instructions.” “Running it on Travis-CI was successful too, with the compilation being done in 20 minutes, so probably half of the speed of bare metal, which is good enough.” “I could also have potentially tried VirtualBox because, as mentioned above, it supports software virtualization with acceleration. But that is only for 32 bit guests (and I didn't find a ready-made FreeBSD 32bit image that you can directly ssh into). For 64 bit guests, VirtualBox require hardware virtualization to be available in the host. To the best of my knowledge, KQemu is (was) the only solution to enable acceleration of 64 bit guests without hardware requirements.” It will be interesting to see if enough people do this hack, maybe Travis-CI will consider properly supporting FreeBSD *** OpenBSD EuroBSDcon 2016 Papers are online (https://www.openbsd.org/events.html) Slides from the OpenBSD talks at EuroBSDCon are online now Landry Breuil, Building packages on exotic architectures (https://rhaalovely.net/~landry/eurobsdcon2016/) Peter Hessler, Bidirectional Forwarding Detection (BFD) implementation and support in OpenBSD (https://www.openbsd.org/papers/eurobsdcon2016-bfd.pdf) Ingo Schwarze, Why and how you ought to keep multibyte character support simple (https://www.openbsd.org/papers/eurobsdcon2016-utf8.pdf) (roff/mm/gpresent source code (https://www.openbsd.org/papers/eurobsdcon2016-utf8.roff)) Stefan Sperling, OpenBSD meets 802.11n (https://www.openbsd.org/papers/eurobsdcon2016-openbsd-11n.pdf) Antoine Jacoutot, OpenBSD rc.d(8) (https://www.bsdfrog.org/pub/events/openbsd-rcd-EuroBSDcon2016.pdf) Marc Espie, Retrofitting privsep into dpb and pkg_add (https://www.openbsd.org/papers/eurobsdcon2016-privsep.pdf) Martin Pieuchot, Embracing the BSD routing table (https://www.openbsd.org/papers/eurobsdcon2016-embracingbsdrt.pdf) I am working to build a similar website for the FreeBSD project, but there is still a lot of work to do I also managed to find the slides from the keynotes: Opening Keynote: George Neville-Neil: Looking Backwards: The coming decades of BSD (https://papers.freebsd.org/2016/EuroBSDCon/LookingBackwards.pdf) Closing Keynote: Gert Döring: Internet Attacks, Self-Governance, and the Consequences (http://www.monobsd.com/files/16_ddos_and_consequences.pptx) *** VirtualBox Shared Folders on FreeBSD: progress report (https://kernelnomicon.org/?p=650) In the past month or so, VirtualBox in the FreeBSD ports tree got bumped to version 5, which while bringing new features, did cause a regression in Shared Folders. FreeBSD developer gonzo@ (Oleksandr Tymoshenko) has been tackling this issue in recent days and provides us with a look behind the curtain at the challenges involved. Specifically he started by implementing the various needed VOPs: “lookup, access, readdir, read, getattr, readlink, remove, rmdir, symlink, close, create, open, write.” He then continues with details about how complete this is: ““Kind of implemented” means that I was able to mount directory, traverse it, read file, calculate md5 sums and compare with host's md5sum, create/remove directories, unzip zip file, etc but I doubt it would survive stress-test. Locking is all wrong at the moment and read/write VOPs allocate buffers for every operation.” The bigger issue faced is with the rename VOP though: I hit a roadblock with rename VOP: it involves some non-trivial locking logic and also there is a problem with cached paths. VBox hypervisor operates on full paths so we cache them in vboxfs nodes, but if one of parent directories is renamed, all cached names should be modified accordingly. I am going to tackle these two problems once I have long enough stretch of time time sit and concentrate on task. + We wish him luck in getting those issues solved. I know quite a few of our users rely on shared folders as well.
