A conversation with coach Kerry McGawley, PhD. She is a Professor at Mid Sweden University with a broad research agenda in the female athlete, and menstruation effects on training, and racing performance. She is a coach and 2x age group world champion in triathlon. Professor McGawley engages in a science centered conversation around the protected women's category in sport and explanation and implications of athletes with DSD. We talk about the paper she co-authored with other scientists and unpacks the evidence and critique of the IOC's 2021 framework aimed at providing governing bodies with guidelines for fairness and inclusion. Professor McGawley gives her dissemination of a common rebuttal regarding performance advantage (i.e., Phelps advantages). Finally, Professor McGawley provides listeners with the key considerations that athletes/coaches should be aware of regarding the menstrual cycle, and the impact on female athlete training, racing and performance. She also comments on contraception influences. Tanya Halliday, PhD, RD is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health, Kinesiology, and Recreation at the University of Utah. Her research focuses on appetite and food-intake regulation in response to lifestyle interventions such as dietary restriction and exercise. Currently, she is investigating how type of exercise (e.g., aerobic vs resistance) influences hormonal and behavior indices of appetite regulation, and mechanisms underlying response variation in body mass regulation with exercise. Another current area of research focus is on development of effective weight loss maintenance strategies. Dr. Halliday is also examining how sex as a biological variable, may influence the appetitive responses to energy deficits elicited through both increased exercise energy expenditure and caloric restriction. She received her PhD in Clinical Physiology and Metabolism from Virginia Tech in 2016, where her research focused on exercise and dietary interventions for the prevention and treatment of obesity and related cardiometabolic conditions. She is also a Registered Dietitian, having completed her BS in Dietetics in 2010 at the University of Wyoming, and her Dietetic Internship through the University of Houston in 2011. We have a conversation about the change in obesity rates over the last 50-60 years and what the current epidemiology states regarding the impact on populations and general health. We discuss traditional energy balance teachings and whether a “calorie is a calorie” as it relates to weight loss. Professor Halliday discusses GLP-1 medications, what problems they meant to solve and for which candidates and explains the side effects. We talk about the efficacy of exercise for improved health and weight loss and whether wearable technology can assist health outcomes. He's internationally recognized for his research in the control of, and limitations to, skeletal muscle oxidative metabolism; causes of exercise intolerance in health and disease; respiratory physiology, particularly the kinetics of pulmonary gas exchange and ventilation during and following exercise; and sports performance physiology and nutrition, particularly in relation to endurance athletics. Prof Jones has authored more than 350 original research and review articles (>38K citations) and is co-Editor of three books. He is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine, the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences, the European College of Sport Science, and the Physiological Society. He's been an advisor and consultant to the Breaking 2 and INEOS projects with Eluid Kipchoge and professional endurance athletes including Paula Radcliff. Professor Jones gives his understanding of the evidence of the performance effect of the so called “super shoes” and whether they explain the recent pro marathon runner excess performance and if so, by how much. Amateur marathon runners may find interesting our exchange about the Boston Marathon and how it is getting harder to get into, and what amateur marathoners must do to enhance performance in order to qualify and get into the Boston Marathon today. Professor Jones gives his perspective on the popularized notion that when it comes to marathon training “volume is king” and if not, what would be the alternative. We talk about distance runners that are getting older, and how Professor Jones recommends changing training, if at all, for those looking to remain competitive. Finally, we talk about science and evidence-based nutrition protocol throughout the training cycle and pre-race and race nutrition. A conversation with Carol Irwin PhD, one of the key researchers for more than a decade around the issue of swimming competence among populations. We discuss her research teams latest qualitative report “Factors impacting Swim participation and Competence,” which aims to understand why we see lower swimming proficiency rates in underserved populations. Dr. Irwin has PhD in Curriculum and Instruction/Health Education and an MA Sport Pedagogy. She is an associate professor of physical education, teacher education in the College of Health Sciences at the University of Memphis. Dr. Irwin has been the Principal Investigator for several USA Swimming research studies, including “Constraints Impacting Minority Swimming Participation.” This nation-wide study was the first research to determine minority youth swimming ability, and to dig deeper to explore possible reasons why these underserved populations drown at such high rates. She has also taken action to solve the problem by becoming research chair of Splash mid-south, a community-based program that supports diversity in swimming as well as decreasing drowning rates. Dr. Irwin discusses her background and what drove her and the other members of the research team to prioritize study of this phenomenon. She discusses the research methodology, of the May 2020 qualitative report, how it built off previous work, and some of the limitations. We review the key findings of the report including the insights that allow understanding about why we lower swimming competency in underserved populations and in what direction are the numbers moving. Finally, Dr. Irwin provides insight into potential solutions.About Dr. Carol Irwin, PhDhttps://www.memphis.edu/healthsciences/contact/faculty/carolirwin.phphttps://umwa.memphis.edu/fcv/viewprofile.php?uuid=cirwiFactors Impacting Swimming Participation and Competence: https://scholarworks.bgsu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1568&context=ijareYouth Swimming Ability and Associated Factors in the United States, 2010-17:https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30688639/Constraints Impacting Minority Swimming Participation:https://www.usaswimming.org/docs/default-source/parent/learn-to-swim/2008_minority_swimming_research.pdfRed Cross Centennial Campaignhttps://www.redcross.org/take-a-class/swimming/centennial Follow Us:Facebook: https://Facebook.com/EventHorizon.TvTwitter: https://twitter.com/EventHorizonTvInstagram: https://instagram.com/eventhorizon.tvYouTube: https://youtube.com/c/EventHorizonTvSupport Us:https://Patreon.com/Endurancehttps://paypal.me/EnduranceExperience
