After being sidelined from a career as a professional ballet dancer, a brief bout as a desk jockey, and a solid attempt at endurance sports, Brock now embraces a more functional and behavioural approach to fitness and movement. This comes from his background in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and his extensive experience in the health and wellness industry working with many leading personal trainers, coaches, gurus, and wellness consultants including: Mark Sisson (Primal Blueprint), Katy Bowman (Nutritious Movement), Monica Reinagel (Nutrition Diva), Brad Kearns (author), Dave Asprey (Bulletproof), Ben Greenfield (Kion), Abel James (Fat-Burning Man) and Mark Divine (Unbeatable Mind). The Fit Fat Fast podcast is hosted by Debbie Potts, and it covers a range of topics related to health, fitness, and nutrition. Today we are welcoming back Mark Sisson. Mark is the author of The Primal Blueprint, Primal Endurance, and The Keto Reset Diet, among several other books. He is also the founder of Primal Kitchen Foods and the Primal Health Coach Institute. This episode is part one of a two-part series on fitness. But not just any fitness, Primal Fitness! Mark was a world champion endurance athlete until he realized that the way he was feeding and treating his body was mismatched from what his human DNA was expecting. This kicked off his exploration into discovering the pertinent human diet, movement, and lifestyle inputs. Mark has been entirely ahead of the curve in rethinking how we approach fitness. Rather than taking on the "no pain, no gain" mentality, Mark's Primal Fitness approach involves the very fundamentals of human movement. These fundamentals include low-level aerobic training, strength training, and very brief, very occasional, all-out efforts like sprinting. Keywords here being short, fast, and occasional. This cocktail of movement is the foundation of his Primal Fitness approach, with play and recovery layered in to keep it light and enjoyable. All of this is presented in our newest course offering at the Primal Health Coach Institute, the Primal Fitness Coach Certification course. If you've been looking for a more sustainable approach to fitness you won't want to miss this episode. Check it out below! You may recall that in my recent podcast with Patrick McKeown from the Oxygen Advantage we chatted about nose breathing, something I've been interested in for a while now. This topic came to my attention when listening to Phil Maffetone speak, as well as in reading Primal Endurance. Today's guest, George Dallam, is an exercise physiologist and triathlon coach and was recommended by Patrick because of his interest in nose breathing. Please have a good listen and if you are so minded, give it a go. You may find that it improves your health and performance. I found this conversation a great learning experience and I hope you can give this a try. In today's call, we cover the following topics: George explains the underpinning physiology of breathing Differences between oral and nose breathing Why nose breathing is better for your health How to use a neti pot to clear mucus from your nasal cavity Simple steps to help you get started with nose breathing The nose breathing paradox - it doesn't have to slow you down David Rudisha breaking the world 800m record while nose breathing To read some of George's research papers and blog posts, please visit these links: Website: https://www.csupueblo.edu/profile/george-dallam/index.html Researchgate Site: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/George_Dallam Blog: https://triathlete.science.blog/ We also talked about the following topics: David Rudisha breaks the 800m world record while nose breathing The Pose method of running Turbine nasal dilator Neti Pot sinus irrigation We got a bit sidetracked talking about barefoot running and Pose method. This week Brad Kearns is back in the hot seat as I had so much to ask him during our last conversation just a few weeks ago (you can listen to that podcast from August 4th HERE). Specifically, I wanted to clarify questions I had about his book Two Meals a Day, chat more about the value of High Intensity Repeat Training (H.I.R.T) vs HIT training, and also take a deep dive into Brad's own daily routines and habits. Brad is always good value, and we got into it quickly as we chatted about: Two Meals a Day = does this work for females and high volume endurance athletes? Why you have to find a diet that works for you Why you need to pick the right moment to start a Keto diet Eating as much food as possible without gaining weight Does H.I.R.T. training work for endurance athletes? Brad's morning routine and his 5-year streak without missing a day of practice Strength training - micro workouts and why you should never be sore You can find Brad on all of the usual social media channels. Start with his website HERE. You can find all of his other social media links RIGHT HERE Brad also has his own B.Rad podcast which you can find HERE These are some of the books that Brad has written, and a book he's recommended: Primal Endurance - I gifted this to over 20 clients and it had a profound impact on the lifestyle of many of them Two Meals a Day - A simple, sustainable strategy to lose fat, reverse aging, and break free from diet frustration forever The Four Tendencies, by Gretchen Rubin Some of the other topics discussed today include: Phil Maffetone, Working out and overfat Dude Spellings, Grand Canyon Rim to Rim to Rim Craig Marker article, HIIT versus HIRT Bard's morning workout, done daily Micro workouts - I love these and have been doing my own version now for the last 2 years 'You should never be sore'- video with Firas Zahabi Pump Street Chocolate - Brad mentions this as his new favourite choice for dark chocolate If you're a meat-eater then take a look at this chart, Carnivore Scores Take a 30 day trial in my SWAT Inner Circle for just £1. Back in late 2016, I came across the book Primal Endurance. I read it from cover to cover and realised that the message contained within provided some of the answers I was searching for. How to find a sustainable training, nutrition, and lifestyle routine for my 50's, 60's and beyond. One of the authors of Primal Endurance was Brad Kearns and a few months later I invited Brad to be a guest on my new podcast (this was my first 2-part podcast). I've been following Brad ever since, observing his own journey and taking some of those lessons to build my High Performance Human project. So it's a great pleasure to welcome Brad back to the show to talk about what's been happening since Podcast #15 & Podcast #16. Hey monkiis, This is a conversation I have been thinking about for a few years and I feel like I've been enlightened. I am pleased to welcome the scientist/philosopher/naturalist/coach and of course Wildman Logan Schwartz to the show. Logan is thinking about fitness, health, wellness, and nutrition on an inspired level. I first heard him on the Primal Endurance podcast a few years back and it is a conversation I've returned to many times. The concepts he discusses are so simple, yet, in our modern environment they are not necessarily easy to implement. In a sense, we have to outsmart how smart we are. Hearing him concisely articulate these abstract ideas I've been contemplating myself had me yelling "yes!" at my phone and I've listened to that episode like 5 times. I suspect I may break that record with this one! We went on an epic journey covering microworkouts, nutrition, how to move more, and how to approach your 'training routine' using the Socratic method. Among many others. Logan is a quote machine and you are going to want to get out your notebook for this episode. I can't thank Logan enough for coming on the show and I'm looking forward to continuing the conversation. monkii on! Logan on the Primal Blueprint Podcast. If you have questions, please send a note to info@monkii.co or send us a DM to @monkii.co on Instagram we can get more monkii Q&A sessions going. Thanks for tuning in and if you are enjoying the episodes we would be eternally grateful if you could leave a 5-star review. It helps to grow the monkii family and spread the good word of the Wild. Thank you. See you out there and monkii on, -monkii Dan www.monkii.co

In today’s podcast I’m back with another of my High Performance Human guests. This week it’s Toby Baxendale, who I have been coaching for almost 15 years. We met by chance as Toby came to a bike exhibition in central London to purchase a product which I was selling, and shortly after he asked me to coach him towards his triathlon goals. We have become good friends since then. During that time Toby has built and sold a large fish distribution business, retained a strong marriage with his wife Katherine, reared 3 healthy children, developed an investment business helping companies in the fish business around the world, and managed to train on average 8-10 hours/week, every week. Toby truly epitomises a high performance human but as you will hear during our conversation, there have been times when life did get a bit out of balance. Listen in as we chat about: Dogged determination and why you don’t need to be the best to succeed, just consistent Making a success of your life when you are labelled ‘Educationally Sub Normal' The law of comparative advantage Paul Clayton - Health Defence Book of Proverbs and how it’s so relevant to life during the COVID19 outbreak Purchasing a Sloane Square nightclub at 18 years old The power of listening Learning to delegate, and how that led to a thirtyfold increase in turnover How the book “Primal Endurance” had a profound effect on Toby’s life COVID19 exit plans and positioning for success The truth behind the phrase “behind every successful man there is an even better woman" Find out more about Toby Baxendale by visiting his website HERE Dr Paul Clayton "The man is the head, but the woman is the neck", scene from My Big Fat Greek Wedding To find out more about Simon’s SWAT programme, please click HERE To comment on this podcast, please visit Simon's Facebook page HERE Visit Simon's website for more information about his coaching programmes For any questions please email Beth@TheTriathlonCoach.com

Might as well face it, you’re addicted to carbs. The conventional approach to endurance training promotes ‘chronic cardio’ and carbohydrate dependency. But there is a way to reset your metabolic clock with the keto diet, and today’s guest wrote the book on it – well, he co-authored it anyway! Brad Kearns has been a well-known coach, speaker and author in the health and fitness realm for 20-plus years. During his nine-year career as a triathlete, he was one of the world’s top ranked professionals, amassing 30 wins worldwide on the pro circuit, and he still holds the Hawaii Ironman 18-24 age division American record at 8:57. Brad has partnered with his former coach and fellow health and fitness authority Mark Sisson to lead the Primal Blueprint, a comprehensive ancestral health movement. Together they co-authored the 2016 release Primal Endurance, a guidebook that teaches athletes how to employ a stress-balanced, fat-adapted Primal approach to training. The duo has another book coming out this fall, The Keto Reset Diet. Today Brad joins Ali to discuss the basics of MAF training and his take on the relationship between peak performance and long-term health. Listen and learn how to leverage the keto diet to become a fat-burning machine and get free from carbohydrate dependency! This information and recording is for informational and educational purposes only.Points of Discussion:- How conventional medicine is missing major understandings about heart health and heart disease- Dr. Hussey's ebook- Blood clots, heart attacks, confusion - Georgio Baraldi Researcher vs Ancel Keys' Diet-Heart Hypothesis- Baraldi found people died of heart attacks with no blood clot - less than 50% of people with heart attacks had a clot - in the 50% of people with clots, the clot did not induce the heart attack - plastic cast study: found that when narrowing of arteries 70%+, the body built a collateral system of arteries to bypass it. - Biraldi's work is not studied in cardiology or medical school- Bypass surgery doesn't seem to prolong life or prevent future heart attacks- Dr. Hussey's take on Cholesterol and Plaque in Arteries - cholesterol is a miracle molecule with lots of benefits in the body - Leiden 85-Plus Study and Lothian Birth-Cohort Study show people with higher cholesterol have less disease and longer life - Cholesterol is distributed evenly in the body, even in veins, but we only find build-up in certain areas/arteries - The artery gets damaged from free-radicals, toxins, high carb diet, and other poor lifestyle choices - The body uses cholesterol to “patch” up the damage so cholesterol shouldn't be reduced- Having a discussion with your doctor - “There's no evidence that dietary saturated fat or cholesterol results in increased blood levels of cholesterol” - Look at triglycerides, HDL, and LDL. - High LDL is okay provided HDL is also high (> 50) and Triglycerides are low (< 100) - Look at markers of inflammation because it causes damage of arteries and deposits of cholesterol and calcium - High sensitivity C-Reactive protein - Homocysteine levels - Lipoprotein (a), pronounced “L.P. Little A” (a protein that gets attached to cholesterol molecule when it's damaged) - NMR lipid profile may be helpful - Insulin-Resistance Score - Instead of trying to lower cholesterol, try lowering inflammation instead - Prevent heart attacks and plaque in arteries by lowering intake of processed seed oils like canola, corn oil, soybean oil, sunflower oils with damaged fats. Lower sugar, refined carbohydrates, flour-based foods, and lower lifestyle-related stress.- Back to heart attacks and why many heart attack victims don't have a blood clot - What causes heart attacks with no clots present? - Not being fat-adapted whereas your body cannot use fat for energy - Increased oxidative stress - Imbalance in autonomic nervous system - Why is heart disease so common today? - Most-people are using mostly carbs for fuel, but the heart prefers fatty acids for fuel - Burning carbohydrates for fuel is pro-inflammatory and makes more free radical waste products; this increases oxidative stress - Signs of oxidative stress - general fatigue or lack of energy because mitochondria are damaged - chronic disease, especially fibromyalgia - heavy metal toxicity - eating lots of fried foods or charred meats - Oxidative stress depletes nitric oxide which is responsible for dilating blood vessels and plays key role in communicating our stress response to cells - Autonomic nervous system controls breathing, heart rates, dilation of arteries, stress response, etc… - requires balance to go from stress/threatening state to a relaxed state - If it's imbalanced, it can contribute to heart disease/heart attack - anxiety is a direct symptom of autonomic nervous system imbalance - heart-rate variability is a great way to track imbalances in your stress response - imbalance leads to other issues like insomnia, IBS or IBD, and more.- Dr. Hussey walks us through the cascade of events leading up to a hypothetical heart attack- What about people who run marathons or love endurance training? - Origin of the word Marathon - Book “Born to Run” about primitive runners in mexico - Be sure you're fat-adapted and only use glucose when you need to supplement during a race - Exercise is most beneficial when it's short term - Read “Primal Endurance” book to become fat-adapted- Why does LDL shoot up if you eat a paleo/primal/keto diet? - When you start to become fat-adapted, you make ketones and make more cholesterol - When your liver makes more cholesterol, it leaves more cholesterol in the blood - When you're fasting, it can increase cholesterol by 69% because we're making ketones and cholesterol - If you're a “lean mass hyper responder”, you will see even more cholesterol increase - All of the above is not something to worry about, but it is wise to look at the rest of your bloodwork like inflammation and oxidative stress, triglycerides under 100 and HDL above 50Resources: - Book an Appointment or Find Dr. Hussey at https://www.resourceyourhealth.com - Dry Farm Wines (Low Sugar Natural Wines) Penny Bottle: www.dryfarmwines.com/fowpodcast- The Health Evolution, Book by Dr. Stephen Hussey: https://amzn.to/2o0zGfh (amazon affiliate link)- The Heart, Ebook, by Dr. Stephen Hussey: https://amzn.to/2ppwnys (amazon affiliate link)- Primal Endurance book: https://amzn.to/2pidY7j - Born to Run book: https://amzn.to/36fQDU9 Get in touch with Dr. Stephen Hussey:Resourceyourhealth.com Instagram @drstephenhussey: https://www.instagram.com/drstephenhussey/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DrStephenHussey/ Youtube “Resource Your Health”: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEHJGZ17zRDZ9rn7yYrC-bQ?view_as=subscriber Marisa's site: https://www.marisamoon.comLearn about *Intermittent Fasting Freedom* at marisamoon.com/iffreedomFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/FoundationofWellnessPodcastInstagram: @foundationofwellness_podcast https://www.instagram.com/foundationofwellness_podcast@marisa_moon_ https://www.instagram.com/marisa_moon_Intro/Exit Music - "Ukulele Whistle" by Scott Holmes

There is a lot of controversy and misunderstanding around the ketogenic diet. And the fact is, any diet that results the liver making ketones qualifies, whether it’s healthy or not. So, how do you sift through the information overload to integrate keto in a way that feels good to you? How do you get away from the value judgements and choose foods that get you closer to your health goals? How can you bring a primal approach to the keto diet, continue to enjoy healthy carbs AND achieve ketosis? An expert on the primal/paleo and ketogenic diets and lifestyle, Lindsay Taylor, PhD, serves as the Senior Writer and Researcher at Primal Blueprint Publishing. She coauthored The Keto Reset Diet Cookbook and The Keto Reset Instant Pot Cookbook with Mark Sisson and collaborated with Layla McGowan to write Keto Passport. A psychologist by training, Lindsay shares her expertise around mindset, goal-setting and lifestyle change to Mark’s Daily Apple and the Primal Blueprint Podcast. An avid ultrarunner and triathlete, she is the lead moderator of the popular Primal Endurance and Keto Reset Facebook communities. Today, Lindsay joins us to explain how endurance sport sparked her interest in nutrition. She shares her take on keto ‘haters’ and describes her primal approach to the keto diet. Lindsay also discusses why the average person doesn’t necessarily need to be in a constant state of ketosis and offers insight into how someone might gain weight while they’re on—or right after they stop—a keto diet. Video version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKUH57eZLiQ&feature=youtu.be Brad Kearns website: https://www.bradkearns.com/ Speaker Questions Q1 - 09:54 I get a lot of questions about Ketosis- how can someone tell when they are in ketosis, how long does it usually take people to get into ketosis, and can one little slip up, like a cookie or something throw you right out of ketosis? Can you talk a little about the state of Ketosis? Q2 - 12:25 A big piece of this book, and the Keto Reset is Intermittent Fasting, which is of course what we got started talking about on this show. Will you explain how Keto and Intermittent Fasting go hand in hand? What are the hours that you personally eat and fast each day? Listener Questions Q1 - 20:11 I ate Keto for almost a year and several months ago I fell off the wagon and have had the hardest time getting back into it. I have a couple good days and then I fall off again. I miss how I feel in Ketosis and really want to get back to it, not only was I losing weight, but I felt GREAT! Do you have any tips to get me back in the zone? Julie in Rock Hill Q2 - 24:53 Since I struggle with Autoimmune issues, I always assumed gluten was just about the worst thing, but I could eat, but lately I realize that it’s dairy that is really affecting me. I’ve noticed that when I have dairy it just makes me so tired and I feel awful. I don’t want to completely deprive myself and binge out. I’ve heard that sheep and goat dairy are the best forms of dairy that I should focus on. What are your thoughts on dairy, and if I were to have just a little, what are some of the best sources? Lisa in Greenville Q3 - 26:47 I’ve heard nightmare stories about starting the Keto diet, including the Keto Flu, and everything else from bad breath, constipation, to low sex drive. I want to get started, but all of these horror stories kind of freak me out. What are some things I can do to make the transition smoother? Jamie in Virginia Beach Q4 - 32:40 What are some of your favorite keto sweet treats? I am not a huge sweet person but sometimes I just want a little bite of something. One thing I enjoy is a spoon or two of whipped cream, which is only about 1 carb per TBSP, but I know the chemicals in it are not good for me. What are some better alternatives? Kyle in Arizona Q5 - 34:37 I’ve lost about 60 pounds over the past year following Intermittent Fasting and the Keto diet. I have about 15 lbs left to go (20 would be nice), and those last few lbs are just so stubborn? I am doing the same thing I’ve been doing, just so stalled! What should I do? Joanne in Idaho Q6 - 38:06 Is there a difference in the Keto diet, versus Atkins and South Beach? My friends try to tell me they are the same thing with a different name, but I feel like Atkins and South Beach are focused more on low carbs and include a lot more artificial ingredients like their bars and frozen meals. What are some other differences? Brad is a New York Times bestselling co-author of The Keto Reset Diet, hosts the Get Over Yourself podcast, the Primal Endurance podcast, the weekly keto show on the Primal Blueprint podcast, and the Primal Blueprint online multimedia courses. He is a top-20 world ranked professional Speedgolfer and Guinness World Record holder, and a former US national champion and #3 world-ranked professional triathlete.
Brad talks about an assortment of interesting concepts, including: Fasting (and not exercising at all) to beat out a cold. The nuance of the "S" pattern in the swim stroke and, while technically accurate, might mess up yo' head like a technical golf swing tip. The difference between improving your MAF performance time versus improving your MAF endurance (not slowing down as much over the course of the test); being chill about your MAF number and setting beeper 5 beats below MAF to take corrective action before you exceed; Doing a 180 mi ride after a 24 hour fast and consuming no food calories for 18 hours of the ride. And the critical difference between the popular training concept of HIIT (high-intensity interval training), and the evolved strategy of HIRT (high-intensity repeat training). Brad was first exposed to this concept by noted MMA trainer Joel Jamieson and it has greatly improved his performance and recovery from sprint workouts. HIIT = extra stress, fatigue and recovery time. HIRT = high-quality performance and less stress cost. Listen to the show and you might get some fantastic tips to optimize your training, particularly with the high-intensity stuff endurance athletes often mess up. What are we learning about recovery and general fitness, training, and diet? [00:02:55] From Paris comes this question: How is the best way to attack a cold? [00:11:51] Should we change our MAF heart rate every year? Honoring the MAF heart rate is extremely important. [00:17:15] How many miles do we need to do accurate measuring the MAF test? [00:19:58] David asks about the "S" strokes while swimming. David talks about his success when adapting to Keto/primal way of eating. [00:23:12] After training in a fasted state, is there any difference in fat adaptation in burning body fat vs. dietary fat? [00:29:03] Carl, a Norwegian living in the Middle East, says as I am relaxing my training I am putting a lower heart rate in thereby working to build the aerobic system. [00:32:07] Josh is an amateur bicycler is wondering about high intensity workouts or is it better to stick with mostly aerobic endurance training? (HIT and HIRT training) (high intensity and high intensity repeat training) [00:34:24] Zach from Arkansas is asking about his glucose readings. If glucose is high, it indicates that the fight or flight response has been triggered. Brad Kearns talks to a big-time peak performance enthusiast from Austin, TX named Dude Spellings. Dude is an avid Speedgolfer, primal/paleo/keto eater, cold therapy enthusiast, and endurance athlete devoted to the Primal Endurance approach. He is deep into the primal living journey and a student of all latest health topics and you will enjoy this two-part episode chock full of great tips from a real guy doing his best to balance a busy life, delay aging, and pursue peak performance goals. Dude was a high school running champion who let himself get overweight and out of shape. He returned to fitness with a traditional chronic approach and hit a plateau. He had lost 20 pounds but had 25 more to go. Part 1 starts with the compelling account of how Dude threw his back out six years ago and vowed to "not be that guy" in the years ahead. He was doing okay with health and fitness goals but realized he could be much better. He was suffering from an annoying recurring skin condition that wasn't responding to medical treatment but cleared when he optimized his diet. Pick up some good tips and reflections to be the best you can be from Dude, and stay tuned for part 2! TIME STAMPS: When he wanted to lose weight he tried the "old-fashioned way" using My Fitness Pal, counting calories. [00:03:28] Dude's back injury was a turning point for him. [00:07:05] He realized that cutting calories too much kills the weight loss! [00:11:59] He still believed that carbohydrate intake was needed for exercise. [00:13:56] It is estimated that 40 percent of the calories that you get in a restaurant are from the refined seed oils that are so bad for you. [00:14:52] A good starting point is to get in the habit of reading labels. You'd be surprised what you are eating even when you are trying to eat healthy!! [00:16:28] Some people find that their allergies, skin diseases, and other maladies disappear after they drop grains from their diet. [00:21:32] The elephant in the room in the endurance community is the excess body fat. [00:28:14] The Maffetone's training was Dude's motivation for his great success. [00:31:22] Meal choices are part of your training. [00:35:22] The way he was training before was keeping him constantly sore with muscle tension. [00:36:38] LINKS: Dr. Peter Attia: Brad’s podcast with Peter covers longevity diet, and finding the drive. Wheat Belly: Book on the grain-free lifestyle without sacrificing nutrition, variety or taste. The elephant in the room in the endurance community is the excess body fat. Meal choices are part of your training.
This episode was inspired by awesome email commentary from a devoted listener, Primal Endurance advocate, and accomplished collegiate level runner Jack McGinness. Kipchoge recently ran the Berlin Marathon in 2:01.39, shattering the previous record and closing in on the previously unfathomable 2:00 barrier. Kipchoge’s pace per mile was an astonishing 4:39. Most accomplished runners would be hard-pressed to match this pace for even a half a lap around a track, but Kipchoge can continue at this speed for 26 miles. This is truly one of the most phenomenal athletic performances of the past 100 years. What’s interesting about Kipchoge’s story is that, just as Dr. Phil Maffetone predicted in his commentary on the Primal Endurance Mastery Course, Kipchoge has become the greatest marathoner in history by training easier than other elite marathoners. Strange as it may seem, this guy rarely exceeds what we call MAF pace. Oh, Kipchoge runs like the wind, on muddy trails and high altitude in Kenya, but he explains that he tries to never exceed 80% of his capacity, instead of saving his energy for races. He is super consistent, super disciplined, but he never trashes himself, never gets sick or injured, and doesn’t even taper for races. He runs 110-120 miles a week with great discipline and joy. Hit some of the links in the show notes and learn how wise and thoughtful he is—far more than just a running machine! You will learn some interesting insights from this show, particularly when you compare and contrast Kipchoge’s eminently sensible approach with the ridiculous Type A chronic approach that is still the norm in America, particularly in the collegiate and high school systems. The cover of the book Primal Endurance says “Slow down to go faster,” and now Kipchoge has actualized this concept. SHOW NOTES: In the Berlin Marathon in September 2018 this runner came up with a 2:01:39 time. This computes to an average 4:39 mile!! [00:01:36] Running is a most satisfying sport. But you have to do it right. The running community in the past has been doing it disastrously wrong! [00:04:05] Doping continues to be common in the running world. [00:06:28] What is Kipchoge training method? He never over-extends himself. [00:09:53] The only thing that is in somewhat conflict with the primal theory is he has a constant schedule. [00:15:42] If you are a person who's trying to break the three-hour mark or the four-hour mark, just apply these insights to your relative example. [00:20:28] The general problem with many American distance runners is too many type A runners who obsess over their workouts and paces and then fail to take care of the little things. [00:21:59] Kipchoge is going to change the game. [00:25:43] LINKS: The science of running article analyzing his training https://www.scienceofrunning.com/2017/09/an-analysis-of-eliud-kipchoges-training-before-his-berlin-marathon-victory.html?v=7516fd43adaa Kipchoge training log http://www.sweatelite.co/eliud-kipchoge-full-training-log-leading-marathon-world-record-attempt/ https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2018/09/eliud-kipchoges-world-marathon-record/570400/ https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/14/sports/eliud-kipchoge-marathon.html QUOTES: Only the disciplined ones in life are free. If you are undisciplined, you are a slave to your moods and your passions. It’s not about the legs, its about the heart and mind. The best time to plant a tree was twenty-five years ago. The second best time to plant a tree is today. Motivation + discipline = consistency https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/14/sports/eliud-kipchoge-marathon.html
This week I am joined by a man whose methods are currently at the forefront of my mind both from a nutrition and a training standpoint. I have recommended the book Primal Endurance to many people in the last 24 months, and I know of many people who are currently trying out the principles of today’s guest, Dr Phil Maffetone. This is a long conversation - almost 90 minutes - which means I have given you 200% more than I promised. I know how to deliver value for money!! Considering that we have never spoken or met, this was a very relaxed conversation and we discuss a range of different subjects. Here are some of the highlights to look out for: I make a confession to Phil right at the start (2:30) Why don’t young triathletes ask Mark for his advice about high performance? (4:00) The off season is called off season for a reason (8:00) Training + workout + recovery (10:09) Coming up with the MAF method (180-age) (12:41) Glycogen stores are like a retirement fund, try not to use them (24:41) In an Ironman the bike ride should be at MAF HR (25:45) If you train at MAF HR you will get faster at the same HR (29:00) How to race faster when you train at an intensity below race effort (30:40) Track workouts, and why they are ‘dumb’ for beginner athletes (36:23) Why Phil rarely recommends Keto diets unless they have a medical condition (47:39) No diets - just avoid junk food and sugar (51:24) Sugar and why having it in small amounts is like heroin in all amounts (53:17) The “overfat” endurance athlete (58:21) Inflammation - The link between refined sugars, processed foods and injury (1.02:15) “Every animal on earth knows how to eat, except humans” (1:03:07) Simon and Phil put together a 5 step process to starting MAF method training (1:08:38) Phil agrees to come back for another call. Episode - 06 Summary: Introducing the StrongFirst Podcast, in this first episode Craig Marker and Brad Kearns discuss the difference between Strong Endurance and Primal Endurance. Brad is the author of Primal Endurance and The Keto Reset. Show Notes: 03:00 - Craig talks about Pavel, his books, and a high-level overview of his programs. 04:25 - How the Soviets trained people for endurance with anti-glycolytic training. 06:35 - How Strong Endurance works with repeat training and recovery. 08:42 - Craig explains phosphates and their importance in endurance training. 09:40 - Brad talks about polarized training and its application to peak performance. 12:00 - Craig explains what anti-glycolytic really is. 13:20 - For an athlete with extremely long duration goals, how do extremely high intensity workouts play into those goals? 17:15 - The importance of practicing perfect is import to efficiency. 24:10 - Craig and Brad talk about the psychological aspect of training sessions. 28:18 - Brad talks about body composition and fat storage. 31:32 - Craig talks about the Strong Endurance movement. 34:58 - Brad discusses how diet affects training. 38:35 - Do you think that healthy things will correlate to peak performance, or do you at some point have to sacrifice your health? 44:00 - Brad talks about what he thinks is important for diet and how it goes along with exercise protocols. We need to escape from carbohydrate dependency. If you’re eating a ton of carbohydrates it begets eating more carbohydrates because of the insulin response. 46:10 - The first step to improve your health is to take a few weeks to tone down your workouts and refine your diet. This benefits both endurance and power athletes. 48:25 - What do you recommend to beginners? Keto is getting misinterpreted right now. You need to take the proper steps to become fat adapted. 53:00 - What does being in ketosis look like from a performance standpoint? 56:32 - What can people do to shorten their intervals in their next workout? Don’t shorten your rest period and work harder in your 10 seconds of work.
Brad Kearns tackles more interesting Q&A from Primal Endurance podcast listeners and book readers. Submit your questions at www.primalblueprint.com/endurance and they will get covered on the air. While the questions relate to the specific needs of the individual, the answers are presented in a manner that applies to a broad audience. Listen and enjoy learning about the challenges and successes of your endurance peers, and come away with plenty of practical tips to help improve your training and competitive results Dave Reed from the UK has been really working with the book since January and has adopted primal diet, MAF training and now is fat adapted. He has been racing but finds his performance has dipped. Would going MAF since January have caused a dip in my performance with the increased benefit being seen after a long period on this training or could it be some other factor? [00:01:16] Dave also inquires about MSP (maximum sustained power) training with the 4-3-2-2-1 (reps) format described in the book. This is a format that can vary among individuals who are working toward building with those high-quality sets. [00:06:00] Kenny is a slow but committed triathlete and asks about drinking carbonated water. Is it okay? Also, why does he have trouble losing weight? [00:17:00] Brian is asking: Why does my MAF time improve so much faster on a bike than when I'm running? [00:20:18] A second question is how to respond to the folks who still think one should use carbs for high performance. [00:22:34] Shannon has many questions about counting macronutrients. There is no fat minimum. She is worried about going overboard on carbs. [00:32:19] Shannon is also asking about how to manage cravings and appetite. [00:39:47] QUOTES: An athlete who eats a low-carb/high-fat diet can, indeed, alter the metabolic fuel source they use during exercise and recovery in a different manner than previously believed possible and perform in a different manner than previously believed possible. When you are counting macronutrients, there is NO fat minimum. More protein consumption doesn’t always mean more muscle mass. Sugar cravings in the evening are a sign that your ego is deflated! How to integrate carbs into peak performance efforts and do they cause any trouble? More great stuff along these lines, thanks for the great questions, enjoy the show! Kevin asks about lifting weights. Please explain the Primal Endurance rules on this activity. Why are you so tough on strength training? [00:01:34] Tori wants to know about what can she do after surgery for ACL regarding recovery. What can she do about her diet since she won't be able to train as she has the past ten years? He asks about Maffetone's suggestions of one hour sessions with 15 minute warm up, 30 minutes at maximum aerobic heart rate, and 15 minute cool down. He is training for NYC marathon. What distances should I be training at? [00:24:35] Matt: How do mid-race or pre-race carbs affect my ability to burn fat? 25 years ago Brad Kearns was in the prime of his pro triathlete career. It's 1991, he enters 16 races, 16 races he finishes in the top 3, racks up 9 victories, including the US National Championship. For a couple of months early in the season he was actually ranked #1, and finished the year as the #3 ranked triathlete in the world. Now, it kind of sounds like I'm talking about Brad's glory days. I mean, this was a quarter century ago. And maybe, you're beginning to think, is this a podcast about a guy who used to be great, and we're going to wax nostalgic about the early days of triathlon, and coincidentally, the earliest days of Speedgolf as we know it? Brad would definitely say his strategy in triathlons relied on his strength in the latter legs of the race. He was better on the bike than in the water, and better on his feet than in the saddle. When you look back on the last 25 years of Brad's life though, a similar pattern begins to emerge. Now 50 years old, Brad is not only just as competitive with his peer group in things like the high jump(5'3”), the 400 meters (under a minute), the 100 meter sprint (13 seconds), but he's continually excelling in all areas of work and life. As a longtime Speedgolfer, Brad recently shot 83 in 51 minutes at the 2014 SGWC, good for 20th place in the professional division, and repeated his 20th place finish in 2015 as well. You see, the astonishing thing about Brad's life is, he's accomplished so much, and yet his glory days are nowhere to be found. Since 2008, Brad has been deeply involved in a comprehensive lifestyle movement known as the Primal Blueprint. He's worked closely with it's creator on several books, most recently as co-author of Primal Endurance. Coincidentally, I gotta mention Brad is also a fellow podcaster, hosting the Primal Blueprint Podcast, and Primal Endurance podcast. I highly recommend them. I'm not done yet. He is also the Founder and Executive Director of Running School, a non-profit organization promoting cardiovascular fitness for kids. The organization conducts events on campus at partner schools in Northern California and Nevada, tracking students' aerobic conditioning results against national standards and helping kids make healthy lifestyle choices and develop positive attitudes towards competition. And there's more. My goodness, so much more. Do you see what I mean now? The bright light in Brad's life is somewhere up the road, the glory days are part of a story Brad can't tell yet, because although he's lived an inspiring, powerful and vibrant life over the last 50 years, his best is yet to come.
