In a world where every ride is tracked, every watt analyzed, and every metric scrutinized, are we losing something essential? Today, Anthony sits down with Michael Crawley—endurance researcher and author who lived and trained with elite Ethiopian runners—to explore a radical idea: that performance isn't just found in the numbers, but in how it feels. Drawing on powerful insights from a culture that trains by rhythm, intuition, and community rather than tech, this conversation challenges our obsession with data and asks: what if the key to progress isn't more precision, but more presence? Whether you're data-driven or deeply intuitive, this episode will make you rethink the way you train. You can check out Michaels amazing book here - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Out-Thin-Air-Running-Ethiopia/dp/1472975324To calculate your zones or tyre pressure you can use our free calculator here https://www.roadmancycling.com/membersOur S&C Plan - https://www.roadmancycling.com/strengthandconditioningThe podcast wouldn't be possible without our amazing sponsors:If you would like to join Anthony & Sarah and race the L'Etape by Tour de France event in Las Vegas go tohttps://lasvegas.letapebytourdefrance.com/ and use the following code to get a 20% discount at checkout! - Roadman20REAPCustom Carbon Composition Bikes made in the UK. In endurance sports, certain countries consistently dominate the podium. While many theories attempt to explain this, the most overlooked—and perhaps the most relevant—is culture. The influence of your social group and peers plays a huge role in shaping your choices and potential, yet we often assume that health and fitness are driven by gadgets, apps, or elite trainers. In reality, human connection, support, and a sense of adventure may be the biggest performance enhancers. This week's podcast explores high-performance endurance athletics through the lens of anthropology. The Way of the Runner - conversations on running with Adharanand Finn
Michael Crawley is a runner, writer and social anthropologist based in Durham. He has been a runner for over 20 years, and ran a 2:20 marathon in 2018. His first book, Out of Thin Air: Running Wisdom and Magic from Above the Clouds in Ethiopia, documents his time living and training alongside runners in Ethiopia, while his latest book, To the Limit: The Meaning of Endurance from Mexico to the Himalayas, takes a similarly immersive approach, featuring overnight bike rides, ultra marathons and runs into sweltering canyons in Mexico. Here he faces questions from a live audience over Zoom. Podcast host Adharanand Finn is the author of three award-winning books, Running with the Kenyans (2012), The Way of the Runner (2014), and the Rise of the Ultra Runners (2019). Send us a textTo the Limit sets out to explore why we voluntarily do exhausting things, like running ultra distances in the mountains and climbing mount Everest, and rediscover the joy of moving together as a group – whether it's running the length of the Lake District in a day, or navigating the descents of the Sindhupalchok International Trail Race in Nepal. It shows us how endurance activities can help bring people together, and even change the way we think about the natural world and our place in it. Michael Crawley is an anthropologist, writer and runner based in Durham, UK. He has run a 2.20 marathon and represented Great Britain in road running. In 2019, Michael was awarded a PhD in anthropology by the University of Edinburgh, following fifteen months of research living and running alongside runners in Ethiopia. His book Out of Thin Air: Running Magic and Wisdom from Above the Clouds in Ethiopia (which we also covered in an episode released on January 15th 2021) won the prestigious Margaret Mead Award in 2022. Michael has written for the Guardian, Runners' World and Trail Running and his latest research is on endurance, self-tracking and doping which has taken him to Nepal and Mexico amongst other places. You can find his book on Amazon or directly through the publishers website: https://www.bloomsbury.com/ca/to-the-limit-9781399403429/Link for 20% discount on Caffeine Bullet https://caffeinebullet.com/RUNNINGBOOKDiscount automatically applied and visible on checkoutSupport the showAny feedback or suggestions on this review or any of our other podcast episodes would be greatly welcomed. This week James and Will are joined by Michael Crawley, doctor of anthropology, sub-2h 20min marathon runner and award-winning author. In this episode, we discuss Michael's latest book, To the Limit, which explores the meaning of endurance – why we do it and what it means to us culturally – through the eyes of Mexican running tribes, fell runners and professional athletes. We talk about the Enhanced Games – one man's bid to an all drugs allowed ‘olympic games'; the pros and lamentable cons of sleep tracking and smartwatches; the culture of doping – or not – across the globe; the pitfalls of the biological passport anti-doping system; how community and spirit is just as important as altitude in creating great endurance athletes in places like Ethiopia; and voluptuous panic. You'll have to listen to find out about that one.To the Limit: The Meaning of Endurance from Mexico to the Himalayas by Michael Crawley is published by Bloomsbury and available here as well as all good bookshops.Interview begins at 8.14------------------Did you know Cyclist is also stunning monthly print magazine? Thank you MOBO Board! Invented by renowned physical therapist Jay Dicharry, MOBO helps you stabilize your stance with an innovative rocker board that's set up on two fins. The design effectively forces you to drive your big toe into the board to improve your stability. I was pretty arrogant going into my first session on the MOBO Board. How hard can it be to balance, right? Well, I was humbled pretty quickly! Even if you're a good runner, better balance, stability, and proprioception is going to help you have a more powerful stride and prevent more running injuries. You'll learn how to improve the efficiency of the kinetic chain from your hip to your big toe. Because as Jay likes to say, it's not just how strong you are, but how well you use that strength. I was recently at a weekend physical therapy workshop (lol I was the only running coach) and learned how important (and rare) this simple movement is. Endurance activities, like distance running, have existed since ancient times. But humans' relationship to those pursuits has changed, according to time and place. In the West, we've currently turned endurance sports into a science — tracking every metric and chasing personal records through sophisticated technology and personalized training plans. But as my guest, who's spent years studying the running cultures in different societies, knows well, this modern, individualized, data-driven approach isn't the only way to pursue the art of endurance.Michael Crawley is a competitive runner, social anthropologist, and the author of To the Limit. On the show today, we first examine how Western athletes have "workified" running through technology and social media. We then look at how other cultures approach running differently, including why East African runners emphasize group training over individual goals and how the Rarámuri people of Mexico incorporate spiritual dimensions into their running. We end our conversation with how we might rediscover more meaningful, holistic ways to approach our own physical pastimes.Resources Related to the PodcastAoM Podcast #1,021: You Were Born to RunBorn to Run by Christopher McDougallConnect With Michael CrawleyMichael on XMichael on IGMichael's faculty page

In the pantheon of iconic sports fathers, names like Earl Woods, Archie Manning, Joe Bryant, Richard Williams, Howie Long, and James Jordan stand out as legends who have left an indelible mark on the world of sports. Yet, in the vibrant tapestry of athletic legacies, one must not overlook the compelling narrative of Lancaster Sports Dad, Michael Crawley, and his son Terrell. Much like the aforementioned sports dads, Michael Crawley has played a pivotal role in shaping his son Terrell's journey in the realm of sports. The echoes of their story resonate with the rich traditions of mentorship, sacrifice, and unwavering support that define the relationship between a father and his athlete offspring. The saga of Terrell Crawley's rise to prominence in the sporting arena is a testament to the enduring influence of Michael Crawley's guidance. In a sporting landscape where fathers often become architects of their children's destinies, the Crawley duo stands tall. The story mirrors the archetypal tales portrayed in movies such as "He Got Game" or "Love & Basketball," where the dynamics of family and sports intertwine in a dance of ambition and passion. As Terrell embarks on his collegiate journey at Wagner University on an athletic scholarship, he joins the ranks of young athletes whose dreams are nurtured by the unwavering commitment of their fathers. Michael Crawley, a Lancaster Sports Dad, takes his place alongside the greats, like LaVar Ball, in the annals of sports history, contributing to the narrative of fathers shaping the destinies of their athletic progeny.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Why does it make sense to Ethiopian runners to get up at 3am to run up and down a hill? Who would choose to train on almost impossibly steep and rocky terrain, in hyena territory? And how come Ethiopian men hold six of the top ten fastest marathon times ever? Michael Crawley spent fifteen months in Ethiopia training alongside (and sometimes a fair way behind) runners at all levels of the sport, from night watchmen hoping to change their lives to world class marathon runners, in order to answer these questions. Welcome to the Manvmiles x Big Run Podcast Race on Feel Experiment. Myself and Kieran Alger have been on a mission to find out if running without a watch… ditching pacing bands and pacing plans to race entirely on feel might be the best way to bag yourself a new PB. We guinea-pigged ourselves and embraced the concept of racing entirely on feel, covered our watches and ran free from the pressure of data, no splits, no heart rate, no clocks, and definitely no running power readouts. We also spoke to elite coach Nick Anderson from runningwithus.com and running anthropologist and author of Out of Thin Air, Dr Michael Crawley, to dive deeper into the science, the pros and cons of running on feel. Be sure to check out Kieran's brilliant YouTube video over on his channel for his take on the experiment, this podcast tells that story and features extended interviews with our two experts for deeper dives into the science, physiology and anthropological ideas surrounding our relationship with running and data. If you're looking for coaching and help with your running check out runningwithus.com. This week, we discussed our Book of the Quarter for the second quarter of 2022, "Out of Thin Air" by Michael Crawley. Crawley spent fifteen months living and running with high-level athletes in Ethiopia, and he shed light on their beliefs, training practices, and motivations. In the process, he reconsidered his own running habits and reasoning. While only two of us really loved the book, we all thought that there were important takeaways.
In this week's episode of the podcast, Brad talks about how he got chased by coyotes on a recent trail run, his obsession with books about marathon running & training, and the new Tour de France Netflix TV series being filmed this year (similar to the F1: Drive to Survive TV series). Aside from that, a lot happened this week from the new episodes of Stranger things, awesome Tour de France upsets, and new "epic" pictures of space by the James Webb Telescope. Thanks for listening and if you enjoyed this episode please make sure you share it with the world, leave a review/comment and subscribe for future episodes! Dr. Michael Crawley spent fifteen months living in Ethiopia, where he trained with the country's top runners. Michael, a 2:20 marathoner and anthropologist, combined his passions for research and running to learn and write on the training methods in Ethiopia that make champions. This is a fascinating conversation with so many takeaways that we can apply to our own training. Michael's book, Out of Thin Air, is available online and in bookstores. Cheryl Miller is one the most interesting people we've had on the show with an absolutely fascinating story. Cheryl grew up in a challenging situation with almost all of her family members dying when she was young for a variety of reasons. After relocating to Long Island to live with her grandparents she started to excel at running just when her life needed to be put on the right track. After several New York state titles she decided to run at Georgetown. She quickly moved on from running while there and decided to focus elsewhere. She graduated, entered law school, and has had a remarkably successful professional career. She is now back to running and doing so with abandon and with unique goals and challenges in mind. In our regular Friday "Running Between the Lines" segment we are joined by Matt Fitzgerald. Last week he wrote a piece entitled, "Ethiopian Runners Train Differently. Or Do They?" for Podium Runner. It is a synthesis and brief analysis of Michael Crawley's book "Out of Thin Air" in which Crawley details the training of some of Ethiopia's finest runners while he was imbedded with one of their elite teams www.podiumrunner.com/training/ethiopian-runners-train-differently-or-do-they Sponsors: Do you want to run further and faster -- and recover quicker and easier? We've greatly enjoyed reading our Book of the Month for February, Out of Thin Air by Dr Michael Crawley.Out of Thin Air is Michael's account of living for 15 months in Addis Ababa with a group of runners, whom he also joined on training runs through the streets, forests and hills of Ethiopia. In our interview with Michael we discuss perceptions of Ethiopian running, the importance of running with others, and how Michael (a Newcastle fan) got caught in the cross fire between warring Ethiopian Man Utd and Man City fans...Your hosts Niall and Katharine also discuss their winter running, Niall's lockdown funk slump, and why Katharine's new trail shoes are proving a winner for her icy runs.We also pose the essential question - if a run isn't on Strava, has it really happened?(Obviously, that's a silly question. Of course it hasn't!)All this, and many more hodgepodge things, on your latest edition of the Common Ground Running Book Club podcast!Don't forget to listen, rate and subscribe, and follow us on Twitter @commongroundrbc

Dr Michael Crawley is an anthropologist, writer and runner. Michael is a 2:20 marathon runner, he has competed at national and international level and currently works as Assistant Professor in Social Anthropology at Durham University. Michaels new book Out of thin air, Running Wisdom and Magic from Above the Clouds in Ethiopia came out in the UK in November and the US last week. We hear a lot about Kenyan running culture, and in recent years athletes from all over the world have gone to train in Kenya, but what about Ethiopia? Ethiopia has produced athletes like Tirunesh Dibaba, Kenenisa Bekele, and Haile Gebreselassie.Out of Thin Air is the story of Michael Crawley's time living and training with some of the best runners in the world in Ethiopia. The book is divided into 14 chapters, and each chapter describes a facet of training life in Ethiopia, and some of the reasons and beliefs associated with it. There are a lot of little stories about Michael’s experience, like when he was woken up at 3 am for the first time to join the others for a night run. Because he spent 15 months training with the group, he really got a chance to develop friendships and integrate into the running scene. Despite being a 2:20 marathoner he always ended up struggling to complete the training runs, many done at altitude with blazing fast runners.Big thank you to the publisher, Bloomsbury, for providing a review copy of the book and for connecting us with the author. Ethiopian men hold six of the top fastest marathon times ever. The female 5,000m and 10,000m records are also held by natives of the East African nation. In Ethiopia, running is not a pastime but a central pillar of life – but what can we learn from the way they train? Michael Crawley, a 2:20 marathon runner and assistant professor in social anthropology at Durham University, spent 15 months in Ethiopia training alongside some of the country's best runners and distilled his findings into the excellent Out of Thin Air: Running Wisdom and Magic From Above the Clouds in Ethiopia. Relationships are the bedrock of our society. One key way we can activate our compassion is to form relationships with people which can foster opportunities for us to be of help to them.Be aware of your biasesThere are numerous biases that inhibit our ability to activate our compassion, and most of them have become so ingrained in us that we almost feel they’re based in biology. The most common bias is the frequent exposure bias; this is why some people believe that their experience is superior, be it race, sexual orientation, or gender. The more we get exposed to an idea the more convincing it is to us.For more information please visit: https://www.edafeokporo.com/compassionisworthmore or subscribe to my email list here http://eepurl.com/gYm1FvMusic by: https://www.bensound.comRecorded at my home studioQuote at the beginning by Michael Crawley
