While this AI chatbot is still being tested with broader availability coming later in 2025, the technology appears to be linked with Gatorade GX sweat patches. After finishing a workout session (or activity), you can quickly scan the Gatorade GX sweat patch with your phone to reveal personalized hydration data focused on helping you refuel and recover. I'd assume Anna will also integrate seamlessly with Gatorade Smart GX water bottles, but more importantly suggest complementary Gatorade sports nutrition products (that have been a major categorical priority for PepsiCo leadership of late).

Dr. Stein discusses the functions of vitamin D, how to correct a deficiency, the best sources of vitamin D, and how much does someone need to reach an optimal level.  Dr. Kimberly Stein is a scientist with a background in exercise physiology and sports nutrition. Kim's previous research focused on vitamin D, dairy foods and recovery, and in her current position, she oversees programming in the translation of scientific information for influencers as well as athlete/team testing. Kim earned her bachelor's degree at Beloit College (WI) in Chemistry and Sociology, where she also played basketball and softball, and her master's degree in Organic Chemistry from the University of Notre Dame. In 2005 Kim earned her doctorate at Purdue University from the department of Health and Kinesiology while training in the Interdepartmental Nutrition Program. Prior to arriving at GSSI, Kim worked as an Assistant Professor of Exercise Physiology and Sports Nutrition at Carroll College (WI), and coached basketball for 10 years. Andrew M Jones PhD DSc is Professor of Applied Physiology in the Department of Sport and Health Sciences at the University of Exeter. He's internationally recognized for his research in the control of, and limitations to, skeletal muscle oxidative metabolism; causes of exercise intolerance in health and disease; respiratory physiology, particularly the kinetics of pulmonary gas exchange and ventilation during and following exercise; and sports performance physiology and nutrition, particularly in relation to endurance athletics. Prof Jones has authored more than 350 original research and review articles (>38K citations) and is co-Editor of three books. He is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine, the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences, the European College of Sport Science, and the Physiological Society. Jones is Editor-in-Chief of Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise and serves on the Editorial Board of six other international journals in sports medicine and exercise science. Prof Jones has acted as a consultant to a number of governing bodies of sport or commercial companies including UK Athletics, the English Institute of Sport, Gatorade Sports Science Institute and Nike Inc. He's been an advisor and consultant to the Breaking 2 and INEOS projects with Eluid Kipchoge and professional endurance athletes including Paula Radcliff. Professor Jones gives his understanding of the evidence of the performance effect of the so called “super shoes” and whether they explain the recent pro marathon runner excess performance and if so, by how much. Amateur marathon runners may find interesting our exchange about the Boston Marathon and how it is getting harder to get into, and what amateur marathoners must do to enhance performance in order to qualify and get into the Boston Marathon today. Andrew M Jones Ph.D. is a Professor of Applied Physiology in the Department of Sport and Health Sciences. Dr. Jones and Vikas speak about running fast, his involvement in the breaking-2 project, and more in this episode. Prof Jones is internationally recognized for his research in the following areas: 1) control of, and limitations to, skeletal muscle oxidative metabolism 2) causes of exercise intolerance in health and disease 3) respiratory physiology, particularly the kinetics of pulmonary gas exchange and ventilation during and following exercise 4) sports performance physiology and nutrition, particularly in relation to endurance athletics. Whether it's testing an NFL player's sweat to see if they have enough electrolytes or trying to determine the correct carbohydrate solution to refuel an NBA player after an exhaustive first half, those are the types of studies conducted at the Gatorade Sports Science Institute (GSSI). In this podcast, Dr Rebecca Randell, Bridget Sopeña and I discuss their path towards being a scientist at the GSSI, the educational direction they took, and the challenges they faced along the way. We'll also dive into the significance of a mentorship/mentee relationship and why it played a critical role in their development as scientists. Rebecca Randell, Ph.D., Dr Rebecca Randell is an Associate Principal Scientist at GSSI and a visiting fellow at Loughborough University, UK. Rebecca earned her bachelor's degree and her PhD from the University of Birmingham UK, under the supervision of Professor Asker Jeukendrup. Rebecca has been at GSSI for nine years where she has managed and supported GSSI service and education engagements in Latin America, Asia and Europe. Currently, Rebecca is working in the Sport Science Application team. In addition, Rebecca has extensive experience working with elite athletes and clubs such as FC Barcelona, Manchester City FC and PV Sindhu. She continues to author publications in peer reviewed journals and deliver invited presentations in the UK and abroad. Bridget Sopeña, M.S., is a Senior Scientist who has been with the Gatorade Sports Science Institute since 2014 and is stationed at the headquarter lab in Barrington, IL. Her main responsibilities include leading US and Canada GSSI Athlete Service Programs and has spearheaded GSSI's Elite Recovery Program. As an athlete service lead, she evaluates elite athletes in their field of play and educates them or their respective practitioners on their individual physiological, hydration, and sports nutrition needs. Within the recovery program, she has done extensive research on athlete monitoring solutions and has championed salivary analysis as a novel athlete assessment. Hitting the wall is an experience most runners and triathletes are familiar with. Sometimes it's mild. Your energy feels totally drained and you want to stop. You may be able to continue but you have to slow your pace down drastically. Other times it can be a complete disaster. You crumple to the ground and wait for death. Sometime later, you seem to regain enough composure to stagger home or call someone to come get you. So what's going on when we "hit the wall"? How come some days you can run 20km at 5:30 pace and feel on top of the world, whereas other days you get to 10km and feel like you're going to pass out? The question is: Why do we run out of energy? In order to help us answer this question, we need to understand where our body gets the energy we use to run. For the most part, we burn glucose and fatty acids to produce the energy required for muscular contractions. We discussed that in detail in our episode on energy systems. In order to get the glucose and fatty acids to the muscles, we need to eat. Essentially, this is fuelling our training. Most of us are familiar with some aspects of fuelling. We eat gels and sports drinks and sometimes force-feed ourselves excessive amounts of pasta in the days prior to a race. However, if we're honest, we're not exactly sure what we're doing. We don't really know why we eat certain foods, how many gels we need for a race, how much sports drink to gulp down on a training run. We are in luck though, my guest today is an expert in this area and he's going to make it really simple for us. Dr. Bob Murray is an Exercise Physiologist and the founder of Sports Science Insights. After beginning his career as a University Professor he went on to become the director of the Gatorade Sports Science Institute, a position he held for 23 years. Dr. Murray recently published a review in Nutrition Reviews entitled Fundamentals of glycogen metabolism for coaches and athletes. This gives an excellent overview of the science behind an athletes diet and the fuelling strategies required to optimize training. In this episode, we will answer the questions... What is glycogen? How do we use glycogen during exercise? How do we replenish glycogen stores? What is glycogen super-compensation? Is low muscle glycogen the cause of "hitting the wall"? How much carbohydrate does a sedentary person need, compared with a recreational athlete and compared with a professional athlete, in order to maintain their glycogen stores during training? If you are trying to lose weight, how do you reconcile the restoration of glycogen stores with maintaining a caloric deficit? What does “sleep low train low” mean? The UFC Performance Institute Shanghai provides interdisciplinary services of MMA technical training, sport science, strength & conditioning, sports nutrition and physical therapy for professional and academy UFC athletes. The UFC Performance Institute in Shanghai and Las Vegas also share best practices for performance optimization with athletes and coaches around the world in other sports. Recognized as a leading expert in sport nutrition research and practice, in particular combat sport nutrition, Reid Reale has over 10 years’ experience working with elite, professional and Olympic athletes. Prior to joining the UFC, Reid was most recently employed as a Senior Scientist with the Gatorade Sports Science Institute at the prestigious IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida; where he conducted research and provided sports science and nutrition services to elite and professional athletes, including those in the NFL, NBA and MLB. Prior to his role with GSSI, Reid was the lead dietitian for the Australian Institute of Sport’s (AIS) Combat Centre, working with the country’s best Judo, Boxing, Wrestling and Taekwondo athletes in the lead up to the 2016 Rio Olympics and beyond. In addition to working with Australia’s best combat sport athletes, Reid provided services to many of the top combat sports nations in the world’s elite teams, including; Japan Judo, New Zealand Judo, China Judo, Philippines Boxing, Brazil Boxing, Ireland Boxing, Thailand Taekwondo, Egypt Taekwondo, as well as many high performing individual Olympic and World Championship medalists. During his time at the AIS, Reid also completed his PhD which focused on acute weight management (weight cutting and post-weigh-in recovery) in Olympic Combat Sport athletes. As a researcher and speaker, Reid has published heavily cited work on the topic of weight management for combat sports, and has presented this work at a number of sports science and nutrition conferences around the world. Where does this process start and is there a team of scientists who create these formulas? When we think of Gatorade, the first thing that comes to mind is a Sports Drink. What we probably don't realize is the extensive amount of research that goes into formulating these products along with the team of scientist they have on staff. With the ever evolving athletes today looking for an edge to get bigger, stronger, and faster, the Gatorade Sports Science team investigates how to fuel our bodies with proper nutrition and hydration to maximize performance and recovery. In this episode, I will be speaking with Gatorade Sports Science Institute Senior Director Dr. James Carter. James and I will discuss what the GSSI does on a day to day basis, their testing locations, their current work in the field, and type of athletes they are testing. We'll also discuss what the future of sports performance research looks like. Dr. James Carter James has 17 years experience in the application of exercise physiology in sporting and occupational settings. Following completion of a BS in Sport and Exercise Sciences at the University of Birmingham, he undertook a PhD at the same institution under the supervision of Prof. David Jones and Prof. Asker Jeukendrup. This body of work focused on endurance exercise and the relationship between carbohydrate supplementation, environmental heat stress and performance. During his PhD work, James carried out additional physiology consultancy projects with the Ministry of Defence (British Army) and Chelsea Football Club. He spent eight years working for the UK-based occupational physiology company Optimal Performance Limited (OPL). Initially this involved providing scientific support to the Ministry of Defence (Army, Navy and Air Force), Home Office (Police and Fire and Rescue) and Department of Health (Ambulance Service). Typical projects included development of physical selection standards, auditing the physical demands of training, fitness testing, investigating methods to monitor and prevent heat strain and improve hydration and identification of risk factors for injury. More recently, James spent four years in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), on behalf of OPL, setting up and helping to run a Health and Sports Medicine Centre for the UAE Armed Forces. During this time (2008-2012), he managed a team of health professionals, including: sport scientists; exercise therapists; physiotherapists; dieticians; nutritionists and health educators. James joined the GSSI team in April 2012, initially as Head of the GSSI International Team based in the UK. In 2014 he took on the responsibility of developing the GSSI Athlete Service Model and since joining the institute has worked with numerous professional team sport and endurance athletes.  In 2015 James accepted the post of GSSI Director and is based out of the Institute's headquarters in Barrington, Illinois. Throughout his career he has published numerous peer-reviewed journal articles, is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and has presented internationally at a range of sport science and occupational physiology conferences.   Resource Links:  Did You Know? Just ask any Tour de France rider who’s frequently burning 5000 calories or more per day about in-race nutrition and they’ll tell you that it’s both critical and tricky to get right. You can spend months getting your legs ready for your target event, you can be putting out the best numbers of your life, and that can all be wiped away by a poorly timed bonk or intestinal cramping. You have to consume enough carbohydrates to keep the legs ticking over when the race gets hard, but at the same time you need to make sure they are well tolerated and you’re able to absorb them. It’s a tricky balance and it’s highly individual. Simply buying the newest, coolest sports nutrition product isn’t going to get you there. You have to find what works for you. But just as importantly, you have to remember that in-race nutrition, just like almost all things, is trainable and while you’re out three doing your big weekend ride, or hard hill repeats, you need to dedicate some time to training the gut. So, today we’ll dive into nutritional training and talk about: 1. Applying a scientific approach to figuring out your carbohydrate needs and whether you are a fat burner or a carbohydrate burner. 2. Second, G.I. distress. Some thoughts on what causes it and why intestinal permeability may be a factor 3. Next, we’ll discuss race nutrition and why changing up what you eat on race day may not be your best strategy. 4. Fourth, why most people can only absorb 60g of carbohydrates per hour but we’re still recommending trying to get 90g. That sounds like a lot, but it’s actually only about 360 calories which is still less than what you’re going to burn in an hour during a big race. 5. Just ask any Tour rider who’s frequently burning 5000 calories or more per day about in-race nutrition and they’ll tell you that it’s both critical and tricky to get right. You can spend months getting your legs ready for your target event, you can be putting out the best numbers of your life, and that can all be wiped away by a poorly timed bonk or intestinal cramping. You have to consume enough carbohydrates to keep the legs ticking over when the race gets hard, but at the same time you need to make sure they are well tolerated and you’re able to absorb them. It’s a tricky balance and it’s highly individual. Simply buying the newest, coolest sports nutrition product isn’t going to get you there. You have to find what works for you. But just as importantly, you have to remember that in-race nutrition, just like almost all things, is trainable and while you’re out three doing your big weekend ride, or hard hill repeats, you need to dedicate some time to training the gut. So, today we'll dive into nutritional training and talk about: 1. Applying a scientific approach to figuring out your carbohydrate needs and whether you are a fat burner or a carbohydrate burner. 2. Second, G.I. distress. Some thoughts on what causes it and why intestinal permeability may be a factor 3. Next, we’ll discuss race nutrition and why changing up what you eat on race day may not be your best strategy. 4. Fourth, why most people can only absorb 60g of carbohydrates per hour but we’re still recommending trying to get 90g. I talk to a lot of great people on this podcast but this may be the man who really knows this stuff at the deepest level and most qualified to talk about fat adaptation and ketogenic diets & therapies. He has been doing amazing work in this field for such a long time.   Dr. Jeff Volek is a professor, researcher, registered dietitian, and co-founder and Chief Science Officer of Virta Health. For the last two decades, Dr. Volek has performed cutting edge research on how humans adapt to diets restricted in carbohydrates with a dual focus on clinical and performance applications of nutritional ketosis. His scholarly work includes more than 300 peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts and five books, including a New York Times Best Seller, and he has provided more than 200 lectures at scientific and industry conferences around the world. He’s an all around great guy and someone I admire.   He very rarely does interviews so I was honored to spend some time with him. He is busy running his lab at OSU while also being a co-founder of a major health company I mention a lot called Virta. Before the agricultural revolution humans had very little access to carbohydrate Low carb or ketogenic diets are what our bodies were made to run on There’s probably only a small percentage of the population that is tolerant to these refined and abundant carbs in the modern food environment Carb tolerance also goes down with age What’s great is that basically everyone can adapt to a low carb diet and this makes sense from an evolutionary perspective We all have the ability to run on fat but eating a ton of carbs suppresses that   It’s helping to treat diabetes (reverse it or put it in remission), cancer, neurological diseases The preponderance of trials shows low carb diets are superior to low fat diets in a free living setting There was interest and studies in ketogenic diets for weight loss in the 50s and 60s but then we hit the “dark ages” of this research with the USDA guidelines and it was basically toxic to study low carb in the 70s, 80s, and 90s There’s been a huge amount of research done in the last 20 years that supports low carb diets There’s so much entrenched beliefs and momentum behind low fat paradigm it just takes a while to get past it - we’re doing really well actually The dietary guidelines don’t reflect the current body of science They dietary guidelines actually matter - affect what kids eat at school, military eat, what’s taught to dietitians I think we should have two dietary strategies offered as the official guidelines instead of ending up high fat AND high carb like most americans artoday Dr. Volek believes low carb should be the preferred option for those with any sort of metabolic syndrome Personalized nutrition is the future but we’re just scratching the surface Mapping the genome and genetic testing aren't really panning out He’s looking at some biomarkers to help tell if people are mismanaging carbs What about eating more protein? It’s pretty straightforward to implement a ketogenic diet but it’s also pretty challenging in modern society His company Virta http://virtahealth.com is working on tools for this I’m doing something similar with SAPIEN http://sapien.org They use technology to efficiently scale the program to thousands and potentially millions of patients Dr. Sarah Hallberg ran the clinical trials and showed amazing efficacy of the program and keto diet in reversing type 2 diabetes Their blood sugar and hemoglobin A1c values were normalized which is pretty unheard of in the standard treatment of T2D They recommend eating fat to satiety but limit carbs and protein to achieve ketosis They recommend 1.2 to 2 grams of protein per pound of reference bodyweight Ketones have an anti-catabolic effect so they decrease protein breakdown - so no need to overeat protein Some people report less than ideal body composition on a ketogenic diet - may be because not getting enough minerals and electrolytes You can get a stress response as a result from this - sympathetic nervous system response and aldosterone causes potassium to be wasted as it tries to absorb more sodium If you have low sodium that has a negative effect on your protein status He has another book called The Art and Science of Low Carb Performance focused on athletics He had a great presentation at the conference I missed In the 60s and 70s Scandinavian researchers found out about the importance of muscle glycogen which led to the concept of carb loading A coach out of Florida invented Gatorade a bit later and then the Gatorade Sports Science Institute formed which really influenced our view sports and exercise science Since the 1960s it's been unanimous that all athletes should eat as much carbohydrate as possible before, during, and after exercise. It’s pretty insane. Originally from Melbourne, Australia, Reid is now based in the United States where he works as a senior scientist with the Gatorade Sports Science Institute at their laboratory in Florida on the IMG Academy campus. Reid is currently involved with a variety of research streams focusing on energy expenditure, sleep and hydration. Prior to moving to the US, Reid completed a PhD supported by the University of the Sunshine Coast, based at the Australian Institute of Sport, Canberra, where he worked as a sports dietitian with Olympic combat sport athletes. A portion of Reid’s PhD work saw him awarded with a young investigator award from the European College of Sports Science (2016). Reid’s research interests centre on body composition management and applied combat sports nutrition, in particular the area of acute weight loss and recovery. As a practitioner, Reid has experienced working with a variety of weight category sport athletes including competitors and medallists from Judo, amateur and professional Boxing, Taekwondo, Wrestling, kickboxing/muay thai, Brazilian jiu jitsu, mixed martial arts and weightlifting; at the Olympic Games, Commonwealth games, continental and world championship level.
