An episode from East River Baptist Church, a conservative, independent body of King James Bible believers located on the Northeast side of Houston, Texas.   East River Baptist Church's (ERBC) mission as an assembly is threefold: - To Exalt the Saviour! Eph. 3:21 - To Edify the Saints! Eph. 4:16 - To Evangelize the Sinners! Lk 24:47   What ERBC believes about the Scriptures: “We believe that the scriptures of both Old and New Testament are verbally inspired of God, that they are the supreme and final authority for faith and practice, and are preserved in the Authorized Version (KJV 1611) of the Bible. 2 Timothy 3:16. Psalm 12:6-7.”   What ERBC believes about God: “We believe in one God, eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. That God is supreme in His person, absolute in His attributes, glorious in His perfection, and eternal in His being. 1 John 5:7.”   What ERBC believes about Jesus: “We believe in the Deity of Jesus Christ. His conception by the Holy Spirit, His virgin birth, His sinless life, His death on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins, His bodily resurrection, His exaltation at God's right hand, and His personal imminent, pre-millennial, and pre-tribulation return. Matthew 1:20. 2 Corinthians 1:21. Ephesians 1:7. Luke 24:6, 39. 1 Timothy 2:5.”   What ERBC believes about Holy Spirit: “We believe that the Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, one with the Father and the Son, the indweller of every believer to enlighten, guide, and enable him in life, testimony, and service, and seal each believer until the day of redemption of the body. John 15:26. John 14:7”   What ERBC believes about man: “We believe that God created man in His image and likeness (a triune being: spirit, soul, and body) in a state of innocence's, but through temptation, he willingly transgressed, became dead in trespasses and sins. As a result, his posterity (all men) inherited a corrupt nature, are born in sin, and are under condemnation. Genesis 1:26. Psalm 51:5. Romans 5:12.”   A message from ERBC to you: “If you are looking for a church in the Houston Texas area that preaches the Truth from God's Word, reach out to us at any time. Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it

On two separate trips, he traveled throughout the southeastern corner of the North American continent. He collected plants, and seeds, which he sent to interested amateur plantsmen and gardeners, as well as some of the foremost naturalists of the age. But he also collected animals and birds, and spent his time making drawings of birds. Eventually he would even read a scientific paper before the Royal Society in London that was the first to describe the migration of birds.  This pioneering naturalist was not, as some of you might have guessed, John James Audubon. Nor was it, as some of the smart kids in the front row might think, either John or William Bartram. It was Mark Catesby, whose two separate sojourns in Virginia and South Carolina–lasting together over a decade–led many years later to the publication Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands, the first ever illustrated account of American flora and fauna. And yet very few of you have ever heard his name. With me to talk about Mark Catesby and his world, both natural and cultural, is Patrick Dean, author of Nature's Messenger: Mark Catesby and his Adventures in a New World. He was last on the podcast in Episode 223 describing the first expeditions to reach the top of Denali, described in his first book A Window to Heaven. For Further Investigation A digital edition of the Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands--Patrick Dean writes, "I used it a lot, as you can imagine!" For more on Catesby's era and context, see Julian Hoppit, A Land of Liberty?: England, 1689-1727; Paul Langford, A Polite and Commercial People: England, 1727-1783; and John Brewer, Pleasures of the Imagination: English Culture in the Eighteenth Century And if you're into coloring books for adults, why not Mark Catesby's Nature Coloring Book: Drawings from the Royal Collection

Jack: In our off time, my wife and I will either be in our garden or out with the dogs (recently, Centennial Park).   2. What is on your nightstand right now?   Marya: A fluff novel for the summer called Secrets of the Chocolate House by Paula Brackston, and then for more in-depth reading, The Enneagram of Belonging by Christopher L. Heuertz. Jack: I always have a copy of The Economist and right now, I'm reading Strong Towns by Charles Marohn. I will also take this opportunity to plug my favorite recent book, The Revolt of the Public by Martin Gurri.   3. If it was your birthday, what's that one place that your family would know you would want to go for dinner?   Marya: Wherever has the best patio – my birthday is in August. So Montana Brewing Co. (the beer is the bomb) Jake's on the West End (oh those coconut shrimp!) Buffalo Block (seriously best patio around), or The Vig in the heights (love those cheese curds!) Jack: I would have to say Blue's BBQ for lunch and Walker's for dinner.

Which piece of social science research has most inspired or most influenced you? This question has been posed to every interview in the Social Science Bites podcast series, but never made part of the audio file made public. Now, as we approach the 50th Social Science Bite podcast to be published this March 1, journalist and interviewer David Edmonds has compiled those responses into three separate montages of those answers. In this first of that set of montages, 15 renowned social scientists – starting in alphabetical order from all who have participated – reveal their pick. As you might expect, their answers don’t come lightly: “Whoah, that’s an interesting question!” was sociologist Michael Burawoy’s initial response before he named an éminence grise – Antonio Gramsci – of Marxist theory for his work on hegemony. The answers range from other giants of social, behavioral and economic science, such as John Maynard Keynes and Hannah Arendt, to living legends like Robert Putnam and the duo of Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein (and even one Social Science Bites alumnus, Stephen Pinker). Some of the answers involve an academic’s full oeuvre, while others zero in on a particular book or effort. John Brewer, for example, discusses his own background in a Welsh mining town and how when he went to college he encountered Ronald Frankenberg’s Communities in Britain: Social Life in Town and Country. “That book made sense of my upbringing and committed me to a lifetime’s career in sociology,” Brewer reveals. And not every answer is a seminal moment. Danny Dorling, for example, names a report by his Ph.D. adviser, computational geographer Stan Openshaw, who took two unclassified government reports to show the futility of nuclear war. And not every answer is even an academic work. Recent Nobel laureate Angus Deaton reveals, “I tend to like the last thing I’ve ever read,” and so at the time of our interview (December 2013), named a journalist’s book: The Idealist by Nina Munk. Other Bites interviewees in this podcast include Michelle Baddeley, Iris Bohnet, Michael Billig, Craig Calhoun, Ted Cantle, Janet Carsten, Greg Clark, Ivor Crewe, Valerie Curtis, Will Davis and Robin Dunbar.

The Greater Pittsburgh Coliseum has a long and varied use history. It started its life as one of four large buildings used to service the many trollies with which Pittsburgh streets were once lined and crossed. "It was the shady side of the street for blocks." John Brewer Jr. told me—pointing out where we were in a large photograph illuminated by a light box. Thus began out chat for over an hour about Homewood, the Coliseum, and black history here in Pittsburgh.  Walking into the space where Mr. Brewer holds court, the room is really a gallery of countless framed images featuring the city, the people who lived in it, and some major historical figures who spent some time here. Brewer has spent decades collecting photographs, including images from the original Pittsburgh Courier. He tells the story of finding what was once believed to be a lost archive, in the crawl space behind some Christmas ornaments.  What struck me about this conversation was how short our memories are as human beings. Looking over the images John flipped though, I saw so many people living so many different lives across more than a century. When we think of the past, many of us think about this big stuff—the huge events that become the small planets we revolve our attention around. John has some of those images, (see the picture of Rosa Parks). He also has a picture of three young black women sitting in a shiny new convertible in the 1950s—all smilies and period appropriate hairdos. He has images of kids playing outside, of black and brown families smiling for family portraits. He has pictures of lives lived in Pittsburgh that weren't obvious to you but they mattered because everyone that came before us paved our place in the spaces we inhabit today. When I posted about this conversation some wondered why they never heard of the GPC before. It was pointed out in the comments that if you didn't spend time in Homewood or weren't invited to an event at the space then you might not be aware of it.  It illustrates the rifts, territorial barriers, and neighborhood lines that were and continue to be drawn here in Pittsburgh. However we forget with our short memories how those seemly bolded lines are blurred and shifted. That's not an indictment against anyone, just something to keep in mind. A week before this was recorded, there was a 400 person wedding that took place in that space. Since this chat, concerts and other activities have taken place there. It begs the question, "Did you not know because you never thought to look?" That's the theme of this conversation. There is so much to learn but we have to be willing to ask. John receives images from people who found family heirlooms only to discover a fascinating history associated with them. He has made a carrier collecting, curating, and writing about these lives. He has worked with the Smithsonian and the Carnegie Museum of Art to bring life to images whose stories would otherwise be forgotten. It was beyond a pleasure to meet and talk with him. The late sociologist C. Wright Mills is in the eyes of many best summed up by one incredibly influential book, The Sociological Imagination, in which he famously urges the academy to "translate private troubles into public issues." The native of Texas was a prime mover in the explosion of leftist thought that pre-occupied the West in the 1960s (he helped popularize the term "New Left," for example). His trilogy of academic books on American society -- The New Men of Power (1948), White Collar (1951) and The Power Elite (1956) -- set the tone for a critique that echoed for decades. Wright Mills himself missed this moment - he died of a heart attack in 1962 at age 45. British sociologist John Brewer is a passionate admirer of Wright Mills, and his examination of Wright Mills's broader oeuvre includes the late academic's work on foreign policy as worthy of consideration alongside his work on of the discipline or the American way. In this podcast, Brewer, who teaches at Queen’s University, Belfast and is a former president of the British Sociological Association, discusses C. Wright Mills' background and his affinity for European-style social science but American-style life., something he describes as a "love-hate relationship." "I describe Mills, in one sense, as the most European of American sociologists," Brewer tells interview David Edmonds, "because he does recognize the importance of history, he recognizes the importance of politics, he recognizes the importance of individual biography, and this special imagination that sociology has, this promise of the discipline that, as he describes it, is one that tries to blend an emphasis upon individuals, and their biography and lived experience upon the social structure, and upon history. In that sense, he is very, very European." In this Social Science Bites podcast, Brewer also discusses Wright Mills as a popularizer, both of sociology as a discipline in the academy but importantly, of sociology as relevant to the wider populace as something that actually delivers a message that matters in their lives. In fact, he popularized the term "New Left"
