Welcome to our 100th episode of the Food Freedom and Fertility podcast. We celebrate this episode with the one and only Cassy Joy Garcia who is a recipe developer. Cassy Joy Garcia, a New York Times best-selling author, of Cook Once Dinner Fix, Cook Once Eat All Week, and Fed and Fit as well as the creative force behind the popular food blog Fed & Fit. Eager to share her healthy living secrets with the world, she started Fed & Fit in 2011. Since then, she became a holistic nutrition consultant and transitioned her personal blog into a tremendously supportive and nimble online wellness editorial, backed by a small but mighty team of writers, researchers, and editors. After realizing that her own struggles to get a healthy homemade dinner on the table overlapped with the same struggles experienced by her readers, she decided that there must be a better way. The Cook Once method was born and it has revolutionized how people cook. Cassy currently resides in San Antonio, TX with her husband and three children. During this episode Cassy describes the difference from her earlier books and her most current but she also shares with us some of her helpful tips in the kitchen. Some tips such as how to make a budget go further in the grocery store and how to store your foods so they last longer. She also helps you understand the difference between batch cooking vs meal prepping and breaks it down so that it is palatable for the novice at home cook. Cassy shares numerous resources to help you figure out how to shop once and eat all week. Cassy shares that a quick and easy win in the kitchen when you just don't feel like you aren't doing enough is KEEP IT SIMPLE. You do not have to dive into the most difficult recipe, keep it exciting, fun and easy… making it doable for you is the most important part.   Majority of Cassy's at home cooking is doing with the stove and oven, however a lot of her recipes on her site and in her book explain how to use other kitchen gadgets such as an air fryer or toaster oven. She also shares some special fridge hacks on how to not let food go to waste. Cassy and Caitlin emphasize during this episode how important it is to stay true to yourself and acknowledge what you are capable of so that you do not get stressed trying to do too much all at once in the kitchen. For those of you currently TTC or you are pregnant (yay) Cassy shares that eating a colorful meal was her goal during that time in her life and even now as she helps create nutritious meals for her cookbooks, website and her own children. The goal at Fed and Fit, is to simplify wellness through quick and tasty recipes, unbiased, easy-to-understand nutrition and fitness advice, and simple swaps for safer home and beauty. Dear listeners, we need a favor from you! Please nominate the podcast for the Paleo Magazine's 2019 Best Of Awards! (And all of your favorite paleo companies!) Cassy has a guest recipe on RealEverything.com: a paleo gingerbread house! Fun fact: Cassy initially went to school to become an entymologist (someone who studies bugs). Cassy demonstrates her "dog voice." (11:03) Ditching the diet mentality The podcast has kicked off the New Year focused on making healthy nutrition and lifestyle changes with the mentality of making it a sustainable, longterm solution. If you missed the first couple episodes, check them out here: TPV Podcast, Episode 333: 2019 Resolutions Check-In Show TPV Podcast, Episode 334: The Secret to Dietary Success: Meal Planning TPV Podcast, Episode 335: How Many Vegetables Part 3: Souping vs Smoothies Cassy notes we give diets so much power. It can be easy to get sucked up into the negative mentality that eating off plan makes you "bad" or "a failure." But that's not true! You're creating a lifestyle so it's important to be kind to yourself, move on, and keep going instead of beating yourself up and falling off the wagon. Stacy wonders how we can find the balance between living a healthy, sustainable life and the stress of yoyo-dieting. Cassy says the object of the game is not to eat as few foods as possible. The goal is to heal and eat a variety of foods to get maximize nutrient density. Are you choosing foods for health? Or are you choosing foods based on arbitrary rules and restrictions. Sarah jumps in highlighting the difference between dieting and lifestyle. Dieting: following rules and restrictions to acheive a short term goal Lifestyle: a long term goal where you're finding balance and sustainability so you can continue this diet and lifestyle for the rest of your life. Sarah notices that in the AIP community, because it's such a restrictive protocol (even though it's a healing protocol), it can create the "diet mentality" that causes person to be afraid to reintroduce foods. (23:51) How do you stay on track after ditching the 'diet mentality'? Cassy says it's about being very strategic with your reintroductions, being thoughtful and careful. When you're following a plan, it can take some of the scariness out of these transitions. But it's important to trust the process and trust your coach. Instead of feeling like you failed on a diet, what if the diet failed you? It might not have been the right program for you. Cassy recommends sticking to the principles of good nutrition, sleep, exercise, and when you choose to indulge, enjoy it and move on the next day instead of beating yourself up. Indulgences don't have to be a "cheat" they can be part of your plan! Stacy notes when you call something a cheat, you're assigning a negative emotion to that food. (33:56) Strategies for creating sustainable habits Cassy says once your program is over, don't feel like you have to abandon all the healthy principles you learned! Pick your favorite healthy practices, tendencies, foods, etc, that you learned from the program and continue them. Meal planning and prep are essential to get your nutrition on track. Happy national royal wedding day. Is that what they call it? Where are they? London? I don’t even know. I don’t know where the royal family is. And there is so much about it on TV. Like, why? I guess because it’s Megan Markle, who was an American actress. But why is it never broadcast when the prince of Dubai gets married? I don’t know who the f*ck the prince of Dubai is, if there even is one. But why doesn’t that get televised like the royal wedding does? Why are we so obsessed as Americans about the royal family? We’re Americans. We don’t have a royal family. Is that why we’re so obsessed with it? The grass is always greener? They’re just so well to do? I don’t know. I don’t know, I don’t get it. But, I’m over the Today show having a 47-day lead up to the f*cking royal wedding. So thank god it airs today, as you're listening to this. And if you're not listening to this and you're listening to this 10 years later; well, you didn’t mess anything. Because nothing happens at weddings. Weddings are boring until the cake comes out. I think they have a lavender lemon cake; so I’m all about that. Ok, I’m totally into the royal wedding. I’m in. I’m down. Megan Markle is stunning. Don’t you just want to stare at her teeth? She has such white teeth. How does everybody have such white teeth? I get it, you just whiten them. But I like to whiten mine in photos, so you can’t whiten them in real time. Everybody else has super white teeth in real time. Oh, my face is so dry. I just got back from Palm Springs. And right before that, I was in Houston. Oh my god, my skin is like flaking off. Like an old human. Anyway. I was just traveling for a total of 7 days. And I love traveling, and I even really love traveling by myself. I just like being able to go do whatever I want, and nobody else to entertain and make sure they’re happy. It’s the best. It’s like, at home, you have to make sure everybody is happy. You have to make sure; oh, what do you want to do for dinner tonight? You have to make sure that person has the right food, and dietary restrictions. And then somebody is not happy to go to f*cking top golf. So you're like; ok, do you want to go see a movie? You just have to entertain other people. And when I travel by myself, I just have to do what I need to do. It’s quite lovely. Why is my skin so dry? Gross. So, luckily, when I was in Houston, I got to see my friend Cassy, who I’ve had on the podcast a couple of times, of www.FedandFit.com. She’s the best. I got to meet her new baby. She’s f*cking; her baby is just as cute as her. Oh my god. She’s just an easy baby. She just lies there. She doesn’t do anything. She doesn’t cry. It’s like; oh, she starts crying, maybe she wants to eat. Oh, she’s tired. Normal baby stuff. Not like they’re sick; they have colic and they’re crying for no reason the entire time. Not down with babies like that, and I’ve experienced many babies like that in my day. It’s just too much; it’s just too much! But her baby was amazing. And it was so good to see her. It’s so fun hanging out with women who women who do a similar job as me,

Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. My name is Cassy Joy Garcia, I am your host. And I am the owner, founder, blogger, nutrition consultant. Well, I guess at this point, one of the nutrition consultants behind the brand Fed and Fit. Our team is growing, and it’s very exciting. And we’re back with another weekly Fed and Fit podcast episode. It’s a very fun, informal 30-minute show. I like to sprinkle in the occasional dive really deep into the weeds of scientific topics, nutrition science topics, like dairy 101 is one that I’m working on right now. I like to invite really wonderful guests to come on and share their experience. And on that note, today is kind of in line with that. I like to do the occasional reverse interview, which is where a Fed and Fit listener/reader writes in with a wonderful question, and instead of giving them exactly what they want, which is an email response. Or however they reached out to me; whether it was through messaging or something. I ask them if they’d be willing to come on to my podcast to record our conversation with the hopes that it resonates with more folks out there. More of you that are listening. So today is just exactly one of those occasions. I’m really excited to welcome Haven onto the show today. Haven lives up in Victoria, British Columbia. She’s a graduate student over at the University of Victoria. She’s getting her Master of Science in Hydrology, which I really geek out over. I think that’s really cool. If you're wondering what Hydrology is, because I asked {laughs} it’s essentially a geography type subject. But zeroing in on focusing on water. But, we’re not going to talk about that today. But I think it’s so neat to know what people’s backgrounds are. Haven, welcome to the show! Haven: Hi; thanks Cassy. Cassy Joy: Yeah. I’m excited to have you. Well, as always with these reverse interviews, I’m going to let Haven run the show. She gets to ask whatever question she’s got. I’m at your disposal for the next 25 to 30 minutes. And we’re going to have a good time. Haven: Awesome. I feel very powerful. {laughs} Cassy Joy: {laughing} You are. Haven: Ok. The question that I wrote in about had to do with food sensitivities,

Today we’re joined by Kelsey from Austin, Texas. She's a petroleum engineer. And if you're new to the show, and you're new to reverse interviews, it is just a reader or a listener will write in with a really fabulous question, and instead of answering their question via e-mail, which is what they've asked me to do {laughs}. Well, just out of curiosity, where did you get your degree in petroleum engineering? Kelsey: I went to Texas A&M University. Cassy Joy: Whoop! Kelsey: In College Station. A little birdie told me you went there as well. It was a wonderful place and I enjoyed it. Cassy Joy: I was hopeful. It’s got a great petroleum engineering program, so I was wondering if you're an Aggie. That’s so exciting! And football season is around the corner. Kelsey: I know. I’m so excited. I’ve got to get myself up to a game. I try to go once every season, but we’ll see if that’s going to happen. Cassy Joy: Oh, that’s so good. I actually just had; I’m doing a surprise. I {laughs} guess I really shouldn’t give too many details, because we haven’t announced it yet. But I’m doing a collaborate eBook with three other bloggers. And we’re scheduling the big photo shoot. Because we’re going to do about a week worth of photos together. They’re coming to San Antonio for it. And as soon as the Aggie football schedule was announced, I reached back out, and I was like, “Guys, I’m sorry to be such a Texan right now, but can we not do it on the South Carolina weekend game?” {laughs} Kelsey: {laughs} I think I went to that one, I guess two years ago, because that would have been when we had that. That’s a great game. I think sometimes you have to schedule around Aggie football.

But if there’s any extended intro that you’d like to give folks, we’d love to hear it. Mark Sisson: Well; where do we start, and where do we end. Basically the only other things; not only. And then we have two restaurants open under the Primal Kitchen flag in South Bend, Indiana, and in Culver City, in Los Angeles. So our restaurant business is taking off, as well. Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. I am your host, Cassy Joy Garcia, owner and founder of Fed and Fit. And today, I’m really excited to bring you guys another reverse interview. And I’m getting more brief with the explanation of what a reverse interview is. But essentially, a fabulous Fed and Fit reader or listener wrote in a with a great question, and instead of having that dialogue via email, I invite this very gracious person to come onto the show to record our conversation with the hopes that it will resonate with other folks out there. And I have a feeling today’s call will do that. So today I am chatting with Jeff. He is a teacher just outside Houston, Texas. And he’s got some great questions stored up. Welcome to the show, Jeff! Jeff: Hey, Cassy! I have a question as far as, I guess the relationship of eating right versus the working out. Just a little bit of background. I’ve been a cyclist for 10 years. Three years ago, I had a major appendectomy, and I lost major weight. Probably more than I should have lost. But being in the hospital isn’t always the best. But I put on all that weight and a little bit extra. And aside from cycling, I really just don’t like doing workouts for the sake of working out. I like having a purpose. So I’m wondering, is it possible just to simply eat better, keep doing what I’m doing as far as athletics, and still expect the weight to come off? Or is there an expectation that you are having to do weights and those kinds of workouts, as well. Cassy Joy: That’s a really good question. How long has this been happening? Where it’s just slowed down a little bit? Jeff: I guess probably the last 6 months or so. Like I said, the appendectomy was 3 years ago. And I got down from my normal of about 170-ish, I got down to 145. And I did a pretty decent job. I had to put some weight back on, obviously. And instead of using it as a way to kind of reset how I was eating, I kind of used it as an excuse of, “Let me add some weight on, add some weight on.” And I stopped keeping track on the scale. Just because I know it’s not always the best way to measure health and weight.

If you're brand new to the Fed and Fit podcast, and maybe this is your first episode you’ve ever listened to, you might be wondering what the heck is a reverse interview? {laughs} It’s a good question. So reverse interviews; and forgive me, long-time listeners because you’ve heard this a few times. But reverse interviews are when Fed and Fit listeners and readers write in with really good questions. And instead of keeping our dialogue in an email, and responding back and forth to each other, I invite these very gracious readers and listeners to come on my podcast so that they can ask me their questions. Essentially interview me for about 30 minutes. Ask me whatever they like. We have a nice discussion with the hopes that some of this dialogue can really help others out there. That maybe puzzling, or working around some similar concepts. So, today I’m very excited to invite Fed and Fit listener Elaine on the show today. She lives in Dallas, Texas. So she’s a fellow Texas girl with two teenage daughters up there in Dallas. And she works full time in finance. Thank you so much for coming on the show today, Elaine! Elaine: Well thank you! I’m so excited to get a chance to ask my question. Because I’ve learned a lot listening to your podcast over the last few years. So a little bit more about me; I went gluten free about 8 years ago, and I’ve been paleo for a little over 2. I did that because of health issues. I have Crohn’s disease, and some other autoimmune type stuff. And really have found tremendous help through what we eat. So at our house, we totally believe in the power of food to heal and how important it is for our health. So even with that, we may not always make the best choices. But we try. And now my husband has recently been diagnosed as diabetic. So we’re trying to modify the plate some to fit his needs, as well. And when I do the cooking, we eat most of our dinners at home. Everybody kind of eats the same stuff. But what the question is, when composing these plates. I’ve got the carbs kind of taken care of. But the diabetic nurse kept telling us that he needs to ...

I’m really excited about today’s episode. I have invited a fabulous listener to come on the show today for a reverse interview. If this is your first introduction to a reverse interview, I’ll briefly tell you what that is. A reverse interview is when a reader, or a listener, writes in with a great question. I am so excited today to welcome Shireen Yates, owner and founder of Nima! And this little gadget; she’s going to tell you much more about it. {laughs} She knows the story better than I do! About how everything came into play and how the really incredible Nima gluten sensor is now available to us today. But if you guys caught the review I did on my blog, I reviewed the Nima sensor because it’s this little pocket-sized piece of technology. It’s incredibly slick. It pairs with your phone, and allows you, if you are extremely sensitive to gluten, or even have an allergy like folks who have celiac, to be able to test food in real time and get an answer as far as is there actual gluten, the gluten protein, found in my food. Because so much of what’s out there, even though it’s labeled as gluten free, there could be cross contamination. And it’s really; it’s an answered prayer in a lot of ways for many folks. Because we don’t have to wonder. We don’t have to wait until we get home and we get that stomachache. So it’s just such a neat piece of technology, and I’m really excited. So thank you, first and foremost, Shireen, for putting this together and working with your amazing team. But welcome to the Fed and Fit podcast. We’re excited to hear about your story. We’re excited to hear more about Nima. And just welcome to the show! Shireen Yates: Thank you! I’m so excited to be here. It’s just an honor. Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. I am your host, Cassy Joy Garcia. And this is the show where we talk about a lot of things related to food, fitness; but mostly mindset. You know, the piece that surrounds it all. And that is exactly what we’re going to talk about today. Thank you for being patient with me. Last week was a crazy week. So we have an episode down, but we’re back up today with a mindset episode, and we’ve got some really, really great ones lined out for not only the rest of the month of August, but on through the rest of the summer. Ok, so today we’re going to talk. It’s a relatively short episode, I think. But we’re going to cover the concept of healing unhealthy comparisons. And it’s an interesting topic. It’s one that’s been rattling around in my mind for a while. And I think that what I’m really speaking to. Is when we think about looking online, looking to social for friends. For friendships. For companionship. For partners. People who we feel like we can identify with online, whether that person also has children. Or whether that person also does paleo. We want to think that because we have maybe one common ground with somebody, that I think a part of our human nature is to desire to have then all common grounds with that person. And what can come from that, is sort of an unhealthy relationship. Usually in our own heads. About where we start comparing ourselves to that person. How are we measuring up to this person that we’ve identified with? So let’s say in the context of parenthood. Let’s say if you are a mom, and you see somebody else online who also has two kids. And maybe they’re the same ages as you. And maybe they are also working in the blog world. But they seem, for whatever reason, to just be a little bit better than you at certain things. Or at least that’s how we see it. We it as, gosh they get so much done. It seems like they’re house is always so much cleaner. And it seems like they’re able to give more time to their business. And it seems like they’re able to have more one on one time with their children, and their husband, and their families. And they always just seem to have these things. And it seems like maybe their nutrition is more on game.

So, she's coming on the show. She's going to be interviewing me, in some regard. And we’re going to have some good discussions. So to give you a little bit of background info on Casie. She lives in New Jersey. She’s a Jersey girl. She's a high school counselor, and she's getting married this coming October. Welcome to the show, Casie! Casie: Thank you for having me. I’m very excited. Cassy Joy: Oh good, I’m very excited to have you here, as well. That was just a very short introduction. But feel free to share a little bit more about yourself, and maybe what’s the theme of your question for today. Casie: Well, I guess my theme for today. Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. My name is Cassy Joy Garcia. I am your host today. And I am excited about today's episode. So I have one of those moments, a fangirl moment, when I got an e-mail a while ago. I have been reading this Skimm; this is not a sponsored endorsement, so know that. This is just a true honest review. I have been a consumer of the Skimm for a while. It's kind of a setup as the newsletter, you plug your e-mail in and they send you daily newsletters with kind of little bite sized pieces of information of what kind of news is going on. And I really like the way that they phrase things. They make it really interesting and easier to understand. And I like having one single source for a piece of some of the news. It's more of just a highlight reel versus a fact-finding exercise. Though they do link to really great articles. Anyway, so I have been a consumer of this Skimm articles for a very long time, and they reached out letting me know that they are currently doing a no excuses campaign on health care. And the idea behind this campaign is they really want to help educate folks on what really is the landscape of health care right now, particularly in the United States. It’s ever changing it's very confusing. And so they asked if I was interested in participating in the campaign, and I said absolutely. And I thought that a great way to participate would be to do a dedicated podcast episode. So today's show is about healthcare 101. So what I've done is I have combined some of my research with the research that the Skimm has put together over on their website. And I will link, of course, to all of their fabulous resources that are really entertaining, full of great graphics. Makes it really fun to read. But I’ve combined our two powers that we had at our disposal to put together what I think is a really good overview of health care. Not only a history on health insurance in the country, which I found pretty interesting. But I’m also going to talk briefly about, how the heck does insurance actually work? I know that there are a lot of listeners to this podcast in this millennial age range. I myself,

Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of Fed and Fit podcast. I am really excited about today's episode. I am chatting with Shelly Kreuder, also known as Michelle Kreuder, who runs 2XL Premium Angus, LLC. It is a grass-fed beef ranch up in Iowa. And to give you guys some back story on how we invited Shelly onto the show today, Amber Link, who many of you already know, is a trusted member of my team. She’s the project manager for the Fed and Fit Project. She attended PaleoFx, and acted as my proxy, because I could not be there this year. And she got to meet Shelly. And she was really impressed by their story, how they decided to go from more conventional ranching and farming to 100% grass-fed beef. And so she thought it would be a really neat story to invite her to come on the show, share a little bit about how they made that transition, what went into the decision process, and what day to day life really looks like for the guys. So, welcome to the show, Shelly! I’m so excited to have you! Shelly Kreuder: I’m really glad to be here, Cassy. Cassy Joy: Yeah, this is a lot of fun. We really worked for this show today, so {laughs} I’m especially excited about it. It was one of those; I was trying to tell Shelly. The very first time I ever signed up for a podcast, I was being interviewed by my friend Liz Wolfe, and we weren’t close friends back then, but it took me a long time to figure out how to work Skype. I will always love that episode so much because I felt like we really earned it. {laughs} So, anyways. I’m excited to chat with you today, and I’m excited for you to share your story with the Fed and Fit listeners. If you wouldn't mind, tell folks a little bit more about who you are, what you do, and how you really came to be in the business that you guys are in today. Shelly Kreuder: Ok. Actually, we moved to Iowa back in 2006. We were originally from northwest Illinois, and we farmed conventionally there on my husband’s family farm that had been in the family for over 100 years. And we decided to uproot, and come to Iowan. All of our children went to Iowa State University. And we wanted to be closer to them, and there was also a lot of; well, many reasons we decided to move to a larger farm in Souther...

Cassy Joy: And we're back with another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. Thank you guys so much for dialing in this week, and maybe every week. I was recently listening to a podcast, and the host of the show gave a special shout out to anybody who was listening to episodes; and episode after episode, kind of Netflix style. So I want to hat-tip out to anybody, if anybody is out there listening to the show in that regard. Goodness. More power to you. That’s a lot of my voice in your ear {laughs}. And I am honored. So thank you so much for the privilege to chat with you guys every week. So, today we're going to talk about; you know, I have to be honest. Today’s show was supposed to be different. I was supposed to be {laughs} I was supposed to write an episode about the five pieces of advice to ignore. And while I still think that's a great episode idea, and I have lots of notes on it, when I was typing out my thoughts on that episode, another topic that is kind of a burr in my saddle right now kept coming out and I kept trying to fit that other thing into the five pieces of advice to ignore. So I said; “Forget it. I’m just going to do the show that I want to do.” And so today we're going to talk about something that is near and dear to my heart. And I'm not bringing it up; I was really hesitant to record this show, because I don't want any one person to feel bad, or to feel singled out, or anything in that regard when it comes to today's show. It's not that there are any; I’m not trying to shame anybody if they are doing this thing that we're going to talk about. I just want to shed light on an alternative way of going about life. Not going about life; that’s way too grand. But an alternative way of maybe communicating with other people. And I hope that it lightens the load. I hope that things become easier for folks. And overall, I hope this is just a casual inspiring solution for folks who may be looking for it. So, what we're going to talk about today is the difference between inspiring a person and convincing a person. Ok? Now these are two very distinct, very different concepts that have two very distinct, very predictable outcomes. OK? And where does this come from? Why is this showing up in the Fed and Fit podcast? Well, I can tell you,

And then could possibly benefit from the conversation. So these reverse interviews are where I invite Fed and Fit podcast listeners and readers to come on the show and give them essentially the mic, and the baton to run the show and ask whatever questions she’s got of me. So that’s kind of the background. But thanks so much for coming on, Kim. Do you want to introduce yourself a little bit more? Tell us a little bit more about yourself, and what some of your questions are. Kimberly: Well you summed it up pretty well. Thanks again for having me, first of all. I do live on 230 acres in the middle of nowhere, and I do travel during the week and at home on the weekends. It’s just enjoying the outdoors with my husband, and working to just keep everything running at our home. So that’s just a little extra about me. I had sent in some questions specifically regarding weight loss. My first question to you was weight loss on the Project.

Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. I’m very excited about today’s episode. I’m welcoming one of my nutrition heroes to the show today. His name is Robb Wolf. You’ve probably heard of him. He’s a former research biochemist, a health expert, and author of the New York Times’ bestseller, The Paleo Solution; and, his brand new book, Wired to Eat. He has been a review editor for the Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism, and Journal of Evolutionary Health. He serves on the board of directors of Specialty Medical Clinic in Reno, Nevada. And is a consultant for the Naval Special Welfare Resilience program. Wolf is also a former California state powerlifting champion, and holds the rank of blue belt in Brazilian Ju-Jitsu. I hope I said that right. I always mispronounce Ju-Jitsu. Robb Wolf: Yep. Cassy Joy: He lives in Reno, Nevada with his wife Nikki, and daughters Zoe and Sagan. Welcome to the show, Robb! Robb Wolf: Huge honor to be here. I always feel like I should be taller than 5’9” with a bio like that, so thank you. Cassy Joy: {laughs} Oh, well you are larger than life. That’s definitely for sure. Thank you so much for coming on. I think Diane said it best, Diane Sanfilippo, when your book first came out. She said something along the lines of, “I’m so excited, it’s been a long time, I can’t wait to see what else you have to teach us.” And that really is how I look to all of your work. I’ve heard you speak several times, and it’s one of those where I furiously take mental notes. So thank you so much for making time. I would love it if you would just share with folks. The Paleo Solution came out in 2010. And I still have memories. I’ve been following a paleo template since about, the past 8 to 9 years. And your book was one of the very first out there. I’m sure you hear that all the time. But it really was influential. So what have you been up to since then, aside from all the research and work that has gone into Wired to Eat?

I’ve been looking forward to this particular episode for weeks. Because, I’m joined by one of our Fed and Fit Project members. Her name is Alyssa. She is from Seattle, Washington. And a really fun fact about her; she got married in college. Which is so cool! When you know, you know. Alyssa: You totally know. {laughs} Cassy Joy: {laughs} Love it! She’s got 2 kiddos, a 5 and a 3.5-year-old, and she really is just as smart and as sweet as can be. And I’m just honored to have you on the show today, Alyssa. Thank you for joining us. Alyssa: Thank you for having me, Cassy. I’m excited to be here. Cassy Joy: Yeah, girl! This is going to be fun. So, Alyssa is, at this point I’m going to go ahead and call you a veteran Project member. {laughs} Alyssa: {laughs} Well thanks. Cassy Joy: Oh, yeah. Thank you. When did you join the project? Alyssa: I officially joined in February. With the February month. Cassy Joy: Ok, got it. With the February group. So she joined in February, and she’s been really submerged in the material, in the community group, and everything. And just been doing such a great job. And we really wanted to bring somebody on so you could hear about the project from her eyes. So I’ve just got some questions for her, but I’m excited to learn from her. And that’s kind of the fun part about the Project, and the community. Everybody has their own takeaways that they pull from stuff. And there’s always something you could learn at every turn and every corner. So, to kick things off, I would love to hear straight from Alyssa; why did you decide to join the Fed and Fit Project? Oh, and I guess should introduce. For new listeners here, who are not familiar. The Fed and Fit Project online is the food and fitness program online that mirrors what’s found in the Fed and Fit book. The printed book that you can find in Barnes and Noble, and Amazon, and Costco, and all those wonderful places.

It’s really great to work with you. Cassy Joy: Oh my goodness; likewise. And the listeners here have known for a while, but I’m the same way. There are companies that I love, I will like their product. So thank you so much for being a part of the podcast. Clara: Yeah! Cassy Joy: And thank you so much for making time to come onto todays show. But I was wondering if you could just kick things off; set a little background information; tell folks a little bit about yourself and your roll at Aaptiv. Clara: Yeah, totally. So like you said, I lead marketing and communications for the brand, and my entire career background is in marketing PR, digital marketing, social media, that type of thing. I sort of fell backwards into this fitness/wellness community. I actually started out as a blogger in 2011. The remnants of it are still online, and I ran a blog. It was more of a food and lifestyle blog. And then a consulting business from 2011-2014, and that’s really where I honed my skills in digital, social, and influencer marketing. I carried more of the traditional elements of corporate B to B,...

She is the mom of two adorable kiddos, a licensed and certified athletic trainer, who works for Airrosti; and she’s joining us today to talk about the importance of recovery and really just taking care of ourselves; especially if we’re living these active, healthy lifestyles. Welcome to the show, Jess! Jess Gaertner: Thank you for having me! I’m super excited to be here; in my own house. Cassy Joy: I know! {laughs} Jess Gaertner: {laughs} Thank you for coming over! Cassy Joy: Oh, you know what? Any time. I will lug this microphone over here if it means I get to see that sweet puppy dog of yours. Jess Gaertner: I know. He’s so precious. I love him so much! Cassy Joy: He is. Jess just adopted a Great Pyrenees puppy; he’s 5 months old now? Jess Gaertner: Mm-hmm. Cassy Joy: Oh my gosh. Jess Gaertner: He’s a handful; you saw him. {laughs} Cassy Joy: He is so cute! Jess Gaertner: He’s a mini Gus. But he’s different though because he has some color to him. Cassy Joy: Mm-hmm. Jess Gaertner: He’s precious. Cassy Joy: He does. He’s got a little badger in him. Jess Gaertner: Yes. Cassy Joy: The Great Pyrenees; if anybody listening doesn’t know what we’re talking about; Great Pyrenees are these great big polar bear-looking dogs, and we have a 4-year-old at home. And he’s mostly white; he’s got some blonde spots. And then their other coloration is called badger where they have these big, really cool; almost St. Bernard kind of spots on them. And Ollie’s got a couple of those. He’s so cute. He’s precious. Jess Gaertner: Did Gus have the crimped; like when he gets wet on his ears, does his hair crimp up? Cassy Joy: Yes. Jess Gaertner: Oh my gosh. I saw that after his first bath this weekend; I’m like, dude! Cassy Joy: Do you remember back in middle school when those crimpers were all the rage?

We’re back with another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. My name is Cassy Joy Garcia; I am your host. I am the owner, and the author, and the founder of https://FedandFit.com; the author of Fed and Fit the book, which is available in stores nationwide. You can find them in Barnes and Noble, and currently in Costco. And I like to give these brief introductions now, because we are having newer and wonderful faces show up here at the podcast who are finding us organically through iTunes. And they’re finding us because current listeners are leaving reviews in iTunes; so thank you so much for doing that, and welcome to all of the new faces; or I guess I should say new ears. {laughs} I’m excited to have you. What we like to talk about is health and wellness from a 50,000 foot view sometimes, but every once in a while we like to zero in, answer some very direct questions. And today’s episode really speaks to that part of the show. I like to do occasionally, sometimes I get on a roll and I do a whole bunch of them {laughs} I like to do what I call listener reverse interviews. And this is where a listener of the Fed and Fit podcast, or a reader of my blog or book, writes in with a question. And I get a lot of questions via emails, and I like to respond to all of them. But every once in a while, I get a really good question, and my response back to these sweet people is; this is a great question; how about I record the answer I give you over Skype. {laughs} And they graciously accept, and so today’s is that. And the reason I want to record the answer over a phone is I think that these questions are some that more people have. There’s more than just the young lady we’re talking with today; her name is Bailey. It’s probably more than Bailey out there that’s wondering some of these things. So I wanted everybody to be able to benefit from this type of conversation. So that’s the point of these reverse interviews; it’s really one of my favorite parts of this podcast, and I hope you’re enjoying them as well. So, let’s talk today; I’m going to briefly introduce how these reverse interviews work. As I will briefly introduce today’s guest interviewer, and then I will hand the baton,

Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. Today, I am so excited to bring you another reverse interview. And if you are a new listener here, I’ll briefly describe what I mean by that {laughs} because it’s probably a new concept. So a reverse interview; this concept is an idea that came to me when I was emailing with some really wonderful folks who had some great questions. And of course, I always make a point to answer all the questions. Because there’s nothing worse than having your question go unanswered. And when folks would ask really good questions that I thought more people could benefit from, maybe the conversation or the answers, it dawned on me that maybe I should invite them to come onto a Skype call {laughs} and we’ll record the conversation, and if everything turns out well could possibly publish it as a podcast episode. And it kind of is the idea that I’m inviting a Fed and Fit reader/listener to come on the show and interview me with whatever pressing questions that they have; with the hopes that it resonates with more than just then. And if it doesn’t, then that’s awesome. I’m happy to have helped one person {laughs}. So that is the concept. Today, I’m joined by the lovely Nina. Welcome to the show, Nina. Nina: Hi, thank you for having me Cassy. Cassy Joy: Oh, thanks for coming on. I’ll tell you guys briefly about Nina, and then the way that these shows work is that I will pass the microphone; not actually because Nina and I are not in the same room, {laughs} but I will give her the baton, give her the floor really to ask whatever questions she’s got. And she’s got me for the next 30-ish minutes; maybe less, maybe a little bit more; who knows at this point. Nina: {laughs} Cassy Joy: So just to tell you briefly; she lives in San Marcos, Texas, which is amazing because we’re practically neighbors. I’m in San Antonio, Texas, so we’re just about 45 minutes from each other. And she is a lab tech there; that’s one of her primary things that she does in town, and she also coaches the gold fit classes. Welcome to the show,

Episode 93 Transcription On today’s episode, we’re talking about how to avoid the feeling like we’ve lost control of our day, and the things we can do right now to get our day back on track. Cassy Joy: Welcome back t another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. I am your hostess, my name is Cassy Joy Garcia. I am the blogger and the author and the nutrition consultant; gosh, what else do I do? The podcaster, and the recipe developer, and the program coach behind the brand Fed and Fit. You can find me on the web over at https://FedandFit.com. And then you can also find my book in stores nationwide right now, it’s called; you guessed it! Fed and Fit. You can find it on shelves at Barnes and Noble, you can find it on Amazon, and also in Costco right now nationwide, which is pretty dang cool if you ask me. I am pretty excited about today’s episode. We are getting back to one of the real; I guess original purposes behind this podcast was really to talk about mindset. I like to sprinkle; between a bunch of really fun interviews, and every once in a while we get really geeky and we get really science-y into some really interesting topics, I also like to sprinkle in some mindset shows where we just talk about how to maintain a healthy, positive mindset. If you’re a new listener here, you know that I’ve been doing a little bit more of this towards the beginning of the year, the beginning of 2017, because this seems to be the season when we set a lot of expectations for ourselves, and then if things don’t go exactly as planned, we almost want to throw the baby out with the bathwater, right? We’re like, well, that’ didn’t go exactly as I planned so let’s go back to where we were before. I’m going to learn nothing from this, and we’re just going to have to start all over again next January, or {laughs} whenever the timing is. So, today’s episode we’re just going to zero in. we’re not going to be that grand and talk about resolutions or anything, but I just want to zero in on a very small, very approachable topic that I think is relevant to most everybody. So we’re going to talk about how to salvage an almost lost day. Now, what do I mean by that. Think about those days when you wake up, and you’ve got a really good idea of what you want to do in the day, or maybe you have some hopes. You have some hopes, your feet hit the ground, you get out of bed, you have that cup of coffee in your hand, and you think to yourself; “Yes! This is going to be a really good day. I’m going to do all kinds of awesome things, I’m going to feel so accomplished. Maybe I’ll even squeeze in a workout and I’m probably going to eat really well because I’ve been building some good habits. It’s going to be gravy!” I’m one of those people; and maybe not everybody is like this, but I tend to always wake up thinking, “This is it! This is going to happen! It’s all going to happen.” Instead of the opposite. And then real life comes into play, right? And then sometimes the day takes off, and all of those tasks that I had in mind that I wanted to accomplish start getting pushed further and further down the timeline as I get distracted with other things that I have to do. And they feel really important. They feel like tasks that I need to focus on as well, but for whatever reason you get that kind of like you missed something in your day. You know what I mean? I think, when I talk about this, I think about for example my mom. She is such an amazing worker. She’s got a great work ethic. The girl just works so hard, and she works really smart.

Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. Today I’m joined by a very special guest; we’re going to talk about a very interesting topic. His name is Walid Abdul-Waham, and he is the pointy tip of the spear when it comes to bringing camel milk available to markets. I’m going to tell you a little bit about Walid, and then I will allow him to introduce himself more thoroughly. So a little bit of his back-story that I know if, is he was visiting his family in his home town of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, looking for raw milk. He was approached by a friend with a plastic bag of camel milk, of all things. Then he quickly realized camel’s milk was being used medicinally in the Middle East and the US for complex health problems. We’re going to learn all about that. When Walid moved to California, he appreciated how people valued a healthy lifestyle. He realized that this was the perfect place to start a camel milk company. After selling camel milk at mosques and ethnic food festivals, Walid’s business plan won the Marcia Israel award; did I say that correct, Walid? Walid Abdul-Waham: That’s right, yeah. Cassy Joy: {laughs} Yes! Nailed it. From USC. So he decided to leave his corporate real estate position and begin his camel adventure. Having made the big commitment, he went courting the world trying to spark camel milk revolution, and found the greatest and most friendly people. While looking for US camel herders in the Midwest, he came across a group known for being polite and down to earth. A group who didn’t exist in the Middle East; the wonderful Amish community, who exemplify hard work and cooperation. Watching them work together was and remains awesome to Walid. Walid felt that they deserved an easier way to bring their product to market, and he loves the quality of their camel milk. Welcome to the show, Walid! Walid Abdul-Waham: Thanks a lot, Cassy for having me. Cassy Joy: OH my goodness, it is my pleasure. And I’m so excited to chat with you today. I told Walid I have all kinds of questions for him; probably a lot of the questions the listeners are thinking right now. {laughs} But before we get into those, I would love for you to fill in the gaps.

About Cassy Joy: When asked what she believes is her mission on this Earth, she replies, “I strive to empathize with people.  I thrive when I connect with others in order to nurture them in a way that helps them feel that they are not alone in this world.” This is Cassy Joy Garcia.  Optimistic. Determined. Encouraging. Author. Nutritionist. Self-Motivator. Cassy Joy Garcia is an inspiration to many and has quite a lot on her plate (pun intended). Between her first book, 'Fed & Fit', a weekly 30-minute Fed & Fit podcast, and her healthy lifestyle blog FedandFit.com, Cassy’s achievements didn’t rapidly appear out of thin air; they are a result of a tireless journey down windy roads with arduous speed bumps.  Her personal journey has taken hard work, motivation and perseverance. This is her story. Cassy, a 30-year-old native San Antonian, grew up in a loving family with three sisters and caring parents who cooked home-cooked meals, which gave them strength and nourishment needed to fuel non-stop teenage girls. As she entered college and lived on her own, Cassy’s classes and social activities kept her so busy that she forgot to eat.  She was becoming noticeably thinner and continued to eat less because her appearance mirrored a healthy lifestyle.  Cassy was borderline anorexic and her family was getting concerned. When she turned 21, her weight yo-yoed and shot in the opposite direction. She was drinking beer, eating pizza and potato skins and just about anything a college student could muster to afford. Her weight gain contributed to a negative body image, and she could barely get through her classes without falling asleep. So Cassy started the crash diet circuit over the next few years, tackling Atkins, South Beach, Low Calorie, Low Fat.  She even attempted Veganism.  None of these techniques lasted long and she always found herself gaining weight a short time after each diet concluded.  She was depressed and fatigued, and preferred the couch to the gym. It got to the point where Cassy felt like she was living in someone else’s body.  She could barely recognize her physical and emotional self.  She was finally ready for a change. When Cassy first attempted Paleo, it was to look skinnier - to fit in those smaller jeans tucked away in the corner of her closet.  She was proud of herself for stepping out of her comfort zone, but it was hard and she wanted to throw in the towel countless times. It wasn’t until she was actually feeling better that made her realize the driving force behind her ultimate life change was a rejuvenation of her confidence, energy and self-esteem.  That was more important. Once she started feeling better, her newfound Paleo lifestyle became easier, almost second nature. Her unhealthy body image washed away, she slept better, and she could drive a car without struggling to stay awake. Cassy took what she learned firsthand from her health challenges, put in years of research, and is now giving back to those who she hopes can realize that they can do it too.   She earned a Bachelor of Science Degree, and is a nutrition consultant and an expert in the kitchen with over 400 nutritious recipes in her arsenal.  She created her website FedandFit.com to empower healthy lifestyle transformations through clear nutrition science and delicious Paleo-friendly foods.  It brings Cassy joy to interact with others that face the same struggles that she too endured.  Cassy calls her site “home”. Cassy‘s first book 'Fed & Fit: A 28-Day Food & Fitness Plan to Jumpstart Your Life With Over 175 Squeaky-Clean Paleo Recipes', published Summer 2016 (Victory Belt). 'Fed & Fit' features 190 of her grain-free, dairy-free and artificial-ingredient-free recipes spanning every meal of the day, from frittatas, salads and casseroles to slower cooker favorites. Cassy wanted 'Fed & Fit' to transcend the traditional cookbook and offer readers a roadmap to wellness. She opens the book with a discussion of her "Four Pillars of Health" (Mindset, Sleep/Hydration, Food and Fitness) and goes on to offer tips on portion control and meal prep with an actionable 28-day food and fitness plan for getting healthy. Cassy even enlisted New York Times bestselling author and fitness coach Juli Bauer to contribute workouts to the plan.

Cassy Joy: Welcome back to the Fed and Fit podcast! I hope this finds you well, and in the middle of a wonderful easy, breezy, holiday season. Today, I’m excited to talk about; this is a topic that has been swirling around. It’s really been this center point of a lot of my work. A lot of my work here on the podcast, within my Fed and Fit Project, which is my online food and fitness program. It’s a center theme of my book; the Fed and Fit book; and if you follow me on social media, you’ll probably see that this has kind of been a central theme across all of my social media platforms, and the thoughts and ideas that I share there. So we’re finally drilling down; I never claimed to be a quick learner, but I feel like we finally nailed what this topic is, and we’re going to succinctly put it today, and I’m going to take a stab at describing how it might apply in your life in various ways, and then also how to make some great positive changes, or strides, I should say. So today, the theme is we’re going to talk about progress versus perfection. Now I bring this up as somebody who has struggled with this concept in the past. And it’s one of those things that I constantly am aware of because I don’t ever want to let go of this progress mindset. Because I really found a tremendous amount of freedom in my life, in my relationships, in my health, in my work, in all of the things that I do because I came more progress minded instead of perfection minded. So if this is something that you think you might maybe struggle with a little bit, I hope that you enjoy today’s episode, and I hope that you get some really great little nuggets out of it. So how I’m going to break up today’s show is we’re going to talk about the different ways in which progress versus perfection may manifest in your life; so if you’re sitting there thinking, “I don’t know if this applies to me or not,” maybe we’ll just go ahead and brainstorm some ideas and you can see if anything resonates. And then to close out the show, we’re going to talk about how you could possibly make the switch from being perfection driven to progress driven. It’s a very distinct difference, and I’ve broken it up into 5 steps; 5 distinct steps. And of course, things are never really that simple. But you know what; we’re progress minded,

Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. Today, I’m thrilled to bring you yet another reader; or listener, I guess we should say, reverse interview. These reverse interviews, of course, are when Fed and Fit listeners write in with really great questions, and I invite them to come on a phone with me! We record the call, they ask me their awesome questions, we get to have a really fun conversation, and then publish it to the podcast with the hopes that other folks out there listening; either they have the same questions and they can definitely benefit from this conversation we’re going to have, or maybe it brings up some things that some of you guys have never thought of before. So I’m really excited today to welcome the lovely Allie. She lives in Ames, Iowa, and she is a graduate student there studying student affairs and higher education, which is really cool, because that is actually my youngest sister, Samantha; that’s exactly what she got her graduate degree in, as well. Allie, I believe you said that you listened to that Fed and Fit college student mini-series we did here on the podcast a while ago. But it’s definitely a passion project of mine; I love working with higher education students, so welcome to the show! I cannot wait to jump into all your questions. Allie: Thank you! I’m so excited to be here. I’m excited as well. Cassy Joy: {laughs} Awesome! Well, what’s on your mind, girl? Is there anything you want to share with folks before we jump into some of the things you’ve got jotted down? Allie: Yeah, definitely. So, I’ll just touch on a little bit of a background of how I got these questions, because otherwise they don’t make a lot of sense of where I’m starting from. Cassy Joy: {laughs} Awesome. Allie: So, I grew up definitely a healthy lifestyle; my mom was a marathoner, my dad was a weight lifter. So they were definitely in the fitness realm, kind of always eating healthy awareness. But I was very unreceptive to it; of course, like a typical little kid, I feel like I was that rebel child who didn’t want to believe what mom and dad were saying.

The lovely Sam from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and she graciously reminded me which state Milwaukee is in {laughs} so I could say that, is on the line today. She wrote me with some great questions, and I told her they were great questions, and I said; I knew that other folks probably had similar questions, or at least would love to hear the answer. So we’re going to have an awesome conversation today! Again, we’re flying by the seat of our pants. I did not refresh myself on all of her questions, so she’s going to ask them and we’re going to have just a live conversation. It’s going to be really fun; welcome to the show, Sam! Sam: Yay, I’m excited! Thank you so much for having me. Cassy Joy: Oh my gosh, the pleasure is all mine. Thank you for making time to come on and chat with me live. Break out of the email chain. {laughs} Sam: Of course, I’m excited. This is fun. Cassy Joy: Me too. Well, I’m going to go ahead and give you the baton; it’s your show. Take it away. Sam: Alright; so just kind of going back to when I first emailed you. I kind of remember in the past you mentioned that you would sometimes take one to two full weeks off from working out, and I just kind of wanted to understand more about that, what the reasons are for doing that, what benefits you see from doing it. I feel like a lot of people struggle with taking time off from working out, and I just wonder what a full two weeks does for you. If you could just explain more about your experience with that? Cassy Joy: Yeah, that’s a great question! That’s why I was like; oh, please come and ask that on the recording. That’s an awesome question. It’s something I haven’t touched on a bunch, and I kind of want to talk about it some more. You know, I think that it’s important to take breaks from everything. It’s important to cycle things in and out, right. If we look at food; I do this a lot. I answer all the way around the question, and then we’re going swoop right in and talk about it. {laughs} Sam: Perfect. Cassy Joy: So when we look at foods, right? Certain foods, produce, they all have seasons.

Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. Today is a very special episode, because we’re going to get a little geeky, a little science-y. I know there are some listeners here who have told me they love those kinds of episodes, and we’re going to do it today in the vein of the important piece of all health and wellness, lifestyle and healthy pursuits. A huge part of that is rest and recovery, and that’s what we’re going to focus on today. Specifically one method. So to join us on today’s call is Sloane Wendell. She’s an expert and the owner, actually, of the first float therapy spa in San Antonio, Texas, which is actually where I’m from. But the things we’re going to talk about today definitely apply in a worldly perspective. The name of her float therapy spa is called iSofloat. iSofloat is a specialized float therapy center that focuses on restrictive environmental stimuli therapy; REST; also known as floating! You’ve probably heard; maybe some of you have heard of this before. Floating is a tool for pain relief, wellness, and relaxation and it comes with a lot of different benefits. Float therapy allows our body to better equip themselves to deal with the stress and tension of living in today’s fast-paced world. And to tell us all about the science, all about the whys and some of her personal experiences, is my friend, Sloane. Thank you so much for joining us today, Sloane. Sloane Wendell: Well thank you, Cassy. It’s wonderful to be here. Thank you so much. Cassy Joy: Of course! This is going to be great. I’m so excited. Sloane was gracious enough; she invited me to come out and try a float, and I actually tried it last night, so this is less than 24 hours later, so I can give some personal experience. But I’m really; was really blown away. What got you first turned on to this whole idea of floating? Because you were the first one to tell me about it several years ago when you were talking about wanting to start this business here. But what got you turned on to it; what were some of your reasons why, and then what ultimately made you want to invest in it as a business owner? Sloane Wendell: Sure. So,

Ep. 58: Stay Fed+Fit at a Sporting Event Today we’re going to talk about some Fed and Fit behind the scenes updates, and also some good, better, best food and beverage options that you can find at sporting events. Cassy Joy: Good morning everybody! I hope you guys had an awesome weekend, and you’re getting ready for another great week. So to start off on today’s show, I want to once again apologize for sound quality. If you hear some background noise, it’s because there is some background noise. {laughs} I am in the car commuting right now, and it just seemed like a really great time to go ahead and record this show. The thoughts for today’s show are fresh at the top of my mind, plus I am, as you guys know, very richly scheduled at the moment so it’s nice when I’m able to multitask. So thank you for sticking with me. And to fill you in, if you are unaware of what’s going on over in this Fed and Fit world; I am; let’s see, we are coming into the middle of March and in the middle of July my first book will be coming out. It is part cookbook, part complete overview of really my personal philosophy of food and fitness. So I will have a sample of my 28-day food and fitness program in the book, the Fed and Fit Project if you’re familiar with it. That thing that I offered online; that thing. {laughs} That program that I offered online starting last fall, and we have since taken it down, offline while I was writing the book and also rebuilding the online format. So there’s a whole bunch of stuff in the works. And if you guys are seeing less of me on social media, if I’m not as available as much, I promise I’m still working for you, it’s just kind of the behind the scenes stage of my business right now. I feel like Oz behind the curtain, pulling all kinds of pulleys and triggers, and getting things set up for a really great show. That will all really, really kick off this summer. So in the meantime, although I'm not posting weekly recipes on my blog right now. I’ll be able to pick those up as soon as I’m over this next big hump of the book, the work, but I am still committed to these podcasts on a weekly basis. So I'm at least able to touch in, provide some new content, say hello, and just serve as a reminder that I’m still here for you guys. So if you ever do want to hear more from me, please come find me on social media. Of course on Instagram, but I recently really started to get into one of the new social media platforms; new to me at least, called SnapChat. And if you are not already familiar with SnapChat, I highly recommend you look into it. To be completely honest, my youngest sister, Samantha, who has joined me on the podcast before for that Fed and Fit college student miniseries, Samantha is 5 years my junior, and she’s kind of my anchor as far as what the young, hip kids are up to, and she’s been trying to convince me to get on SnapChat for years now, and I have resisted because I thought; I don’t know I kind of had some preconceived notions about that platform. So I decided, no I’m good with my Instagram and from what little I understand about Facebook. But I finally jumped in with both feet, and you guys, it is such a fun platform. If you follow me on there, you know how much I’m enjoying it because I post all the time. So SnapChat, you would have to look me up by my username, @FedandFit, just like I am across all the other platforms. And really what I post there, it’s completely unedited, really just glimpsed into what I'm up to. So if you want to know what the heck am I up to,

Ep. 56: Set Your Limits vs. Let Your Limits Set Themselves Today’s episode is another live Periscope recording, so please excuse some of the poor sound quality. As another live forum, we talk about the difference between defining your limits and allowing your limits to define themselves. Cassy Joy: So today’s episode, or Scope I should say, is going to be another podcast recording. Bonjour! Did I say it right? And I’m actually dialing in from this awesome office that I have access to. It’s a standing treadmill desk is what I’m on right now, and you guys are propped up against my computer screen. So it’s a pretty sweet set up, and I’m very grateful to have access to this. So, what I kind of want to talk about today is, this is, like I said before, another podcast recording that I wanted to do live in case you guys had some questions and we could incorporate that into the show. So in case you don’t know me, and you’re new here, hi there! My name is Cassy Joy Garcia. I am the owner and founder of FedandFit.com. I have a weekly podcast, a healthy mindset, food and fitness podcast that is published every Monday. They’re about 30-minute episodes; today’s is going to be shorter. I have the food blog and an upcoming book, which I announced just this past week. The Fed and Fit Book, you can find it on Amazon. Very exciting stuff. I’m just kind of all over the place. If you guys are long time followers, thank you so much for dialing in, I appreciate it. You guys always feel like family. So what I want to talk about today, and feel free to hop on if you have any questions. I will try to answer as many as I can while I’m going through this work. So just to give you guys an update if you’re curious on what I’ve been working on lately. I’m still working on finishing the book, and that has been a really fun adventure. Honestly, at this point I thought I would be finished; hi from France again! I thought that I would be finished with the book by now, with the manuscript at least, and into just the editing process. But it’s a little bit of a longer process than that. Some things that I had scheduled for myself now are running into me also writing the book and meeting some of my other commitments. So it’s kind of an interesting season, a really fun one. I like being richly scheduled. This is something I really thrive in, which is something I kind of want to talk about today. I want to go into that. So that’s what I’m doing. Monday I’m headed to go do a corporate wellness presentation at another firm out of Houston, Texas this time, so I’ll be hopping in the car and driving myself. And so; oh thank you for the hearts! And so I’m spending the weekend on this treadmill writing and just trying to get ahead of the week. There’s no better feeling than starting off a Monday feeling like you got two bonus days under your wings. Ok, so. What; I do not speak French. I’m a Garcia, actually, and I even speak less Spanish, if you can believe it. Ok, so what I want to talk about today. Today’s episode is defining limits versus growing into them. This is something I’ve come across a lot, not just with people I’ve worked with one on one clients, but also family members, friends. This is something where, if you guys are here, whether if this resonates with you or it resonates because you interact with somebody that is this way. Hi, from San Antonio. Ok, so defining our limits; what are we talking about? I’m a food and fitness; I’m a nutrition consultant, and I have a pretty deep wealth of experience,

Tip 5: cook for your actual needs/make use of your freezer [19:54] Cassy Joy: And we’re back! Thanks again for joining me you guys! This is Cassy Joy Garcia of FedandFit.com. I’m so excited to have you today; it is me, I’m running solo today so. {laughs} I’m just going to be talking to you, which is really just like talking to myself sitting in my office. {laughs} But that’s ok, I think Gus can hear me, so at least someone will give me a nod. Anyways, I’m excited about today’s episode. In case you missed it, we just finished up a mini-series on the Fed and Fit college student. And I wanted to knock that out for two reasons; the first reason being really actually talking to college students about how to build their own healthy lifestyle is something that is really important to me. Gosh, now it’s been a while, I’m coming up on 30 in March, but it feels like college was just around the corner. And I remember being there, and I remember not having the information at my fingertips to really make decisions that were going to put me in a great spot to make great decisions for my health when I was in college. And that resulted in me being really unhealthy a couple of years after I graduated. I wouldn’t change a thing; going back I definitely would keep it the same way, because that is what allowed me to discover this grain free lifestyle, and it also allowed me to figure out what it is that I wanted to do. Anyway. If you missed the series, I encourage you to give it a listen, or I encourage you to share it with somebody who maybe is a student, or anybody who is going through a transition. It was really important to me, but I did it for the one reason, like I just said, because it is such an important topic and one that is not really spoken about a whole lot, and if you’re listening, if you’re a college student and I’ve spoken to you at your university, welcome. I’m glad you found the show. So that’s there for your reference. The other reason I did it is because I really like the idea of mini-series on this podcast, because it allows me to provide more information without feeling like I have to rush through a topic. Because often times, I try to keep the show at or under 30 minutes, we can often rush through topics too quickly. And there’s more to say; there’s more that we can touch on. So now having said that; today is actually going to be just a one-off episode. And it’s something that, the inspiration for today’s episode hit me when I was in the kitchen today doing my own meal prep for the week. And meal prep has become such a buzz word for, if you’re having trouble staying on your paleo lifestyle or your grain free lifestyle, or if it feels really impossible, then you just need to meal prep. You know? Meal prep has almost become the scapegoat; whether that be the scapegoat, that’s what we’re blaming, the reason why you don’t have success,

Cassy Joy: {laughs} And we hope you can hear us ok. We’re trying a slightly different audio system. I wanted to bring Samantha on for a number of reasons; I’ll get to those in a second. A little bit of housekeeping first. I wanted to let all of you guys know that if you are having trouble accessing the older podcast episodes, those are now available. I received an email from a listener saying they wanted to go back and listen, and I had no idea that not all of the previous episodes were still loaded on iTunes! So we’ve gotten that fixed, so you are more than welcome to scroll back and listen to all of those straight from your podcast app on your phone! So there’s that.
