This is the FULL event RECAP for the fifth event of the 2025 Freeride World Tour season at Fieberbrunn Austria which was the final event before The Cut. We saw some spectacular clutch performances which propelled some riders above the cut line and disappointing runs that dropped some below. Due to challenging snow conditions, only 3 of the 4 categories were able to compete. The FWT deemed the Wildseeloder face unable to accommodate the full roster riders and postponed the Ski Men. Ultimately after assessing the weather over the week to come, the Ski Men's event was cancelled leaving the current rankings to determine the cut riders. 00:00 Intro / Surefoot 00:29 - SKI MEN Competition Cancelled 19:22 - SKI WOMEN 31:00 - Cut Dynamics / Challenger Series 40:23 - SNOWBOARD WOMEN 51:16 - SNOWBOARD MEN Watch This Episode on YouTube:https://youtu.be/thKUjRjtZbI ---- * The Freeride Guide is Supported By* Surefoot Skiing - Custom Ski Boots Insta360 4X Action Cam - Get a FREE Accessory w/ Code "lowpressure" Skull Candy Headphones - 15% OFF w/ Code "WELCOME15" --- Send us an email!
As part of our Up & Coming Series, we had intended to talk to Isaac Freeland, because he is a very good skier and he was definitely on his way up. But then Isaac threw us a curve ball by not only winning the 2020 Freeride World Tour Rookie of the Year award… he went and won the whole thing. So even if “Up & Comer” now feels like a bit of an understatement, we asked Isaac to take us through his first season on the Freeride World Tour and walk us through each stop. We also discuss what it was like competing against some of the biggest names in skiing; how he approached each particular comp; the rather surreal — and abrupt — end to this comp season, and more.TOPICS & TIMESEarthquakes & COVID-19 (2:11)Background, injuries, & finding his style (4:10)2020 FWT 1st stop: Hakuba, Japan (12:15)2nd stop: Kicking Horse, BC (17:55)3rd stop: Andorra (22:45)4th stop: Fieberbrunn, Austria (29:28)5th stop: Verbier, Switzerland (35:19)Isaac’s comp skis (41:49)Change or keep the current comp format? It was a day of firsts for the rookie, Mickael Bimboes (FRA-1st Place) who claimed his first career FWT win and podium thanks to hard-charging big mountain confidence, perfectly stomped airs and a huge must-stick gap jump over the lower couloir, which has never been seen before in a competition on the “Wildseeloder” venue. Kristofer Turdell (SWE-2nd Place) stood on the podium for the second time this week and clinched the 2018 FWT Ski Men championship after stomping a nearly perfect technical run with tons of airtime. The former champion, George Rodney (USA-3rd) was back in form perfectly stomping one of the biggest airs of the day, which landed him back in the winner’s circle. Austrian snowboard legend, Gigi Rüf (AUT-1st Place) earned his first FWT win thanks to a textbook run, which began with him smoothly slashing his way through the big mountain spine features at the top of the venue followed by a stylish 360, true to form for the backcountry freestyle specialist. Joining him on the podium was wildcard, Elias Elhardt (GER-2nd Place) whose trademark playful and flowy style was on full display and fellow Austrian, Thomas Feurstein (AUT-3rd Place) who earned himself a second podium this week after stomping a solid technical run with multiple 360s. Full episode info and show notes: www.wearelookingsideways.com Sascha Hamm is one of the UK’s best freeriders and somebody who’s been at the top or around the top of European snowboarding for the past twenty years. In March 2016, Sascha's life changed for ever. He was competing in the Freeride World Tour Event in Fieberbrunn, Austria, when he took a fall that almost killed him. As he describes in detail during our conversation, he half-backflipped off a 100 foot cliff and landed on his side on barely concealed rocks. As you might imagine, he racked up quite a list of life-changing injuries in the process: 1) Torn left knee ACL 2) 10 broken ribs 3) Broken left elbow 4) Broken left humerus 5) Broken left collarbone 6) Broken left acromium 7) Broken left shoulderblade 8) Collapsed left lung 9) Ripped out nerves C8 and T1 from spine and tore nerve C8 in his brachial plexus. What’s even more remarkable is that, throughout it all, Sascha remained conscious. In today’s episode of the podcast, part one of a two part special with Sascha, recorded almost a year to the day since the accident happened, we talk about how he’s coping with the life-chasing injuries he sustained that day. Thanks to Nick Smith (www.hiddensound.tv) for post-production help and Matt Ward (https://linguistine.com) for the theme tune.
