Go to https://beyondhomosapien.com/ On this episode of Beyond Homo Sapien, Paul Tokgozoglu and Scott Pelzel delve into the dark and thought-provoking world of Black Mirror. In this episode, they will be discussing one of the most impactful and thought-provoking episodes of the series, "Fifteen Million Merits." Have you watched the Netflix series Black Mirror? Black Mirror is a show that explores the relationship between humanity and technology and the consequences of advanced artificial intelligence. With each episode tackling a different aspect of our rapidly evolving technological landscape, this show has become a staple in the science fiction genre and has left audiences around the world contemplating the implications of our reliance on technology. "Fifteen Million Merits" is a particularly impactful episode that explores the themes of entertainment, escapism, and the price we pay for both. Scott and Paul will discuss the similarities between the world portrayed in "Fifteen Million Merits" and our own world, pointing out the eerie parallels between the episode and the current state of our society. They will discuss how the world of Black Mirror can serve as a cautionary tale for our own world, and how the technology portrayed in the show may not be as far-fetched as we once thought. In addition, they will delve into the philosophical implications of the episode, examining the impact of our obsession with entertainment and our constant need for escapism. They will also discuss the power dynamics at play in the episode and how they reflect real-world issues such as the exploitation of the working class and the manipulation of public opinion by corporations. This episode of Beyond Homo Sapien is not just for fans of Black Mirror, but for anyone interested in the relationship between humanity and technology, and the consequences of advanced artificial intelligence. Whether you are a seasoned viewer or just discovering the show, Paul and Scott will provide you with a thought-provoking and insightful discussion that will leave you questioning what it means to be human in a rapidly evolving technological landscape. So if you are a fan of science fiction, technology, and thought-provoking discussions, then this episode of Beyond Homo Sapien is for you. Tune in now for an in-depth discussion of Black Mirror episode 2, "Fifteen Million Merits," and how it reflects and warns us of the dangers of our relationship with technology.
Joe remembers a time when the seminary building at his high school was vandalized. He also remembers that his seminary teachers loved responding to criticisms of the BOM, but they wouldn't share from where the criticisms came. Smith is rereading the JS bio from Bushman and he's noticing the amount of apologetics within. The guys decide that the whole ‘raising the bar' for missionaries attitude from the early 2000s was most likely just clever branding. Joe tells a story about inadvertently seeing bad words in a chat on his son's discord. Smith tells a story about catching a coworker watching sexy moose butchering videos. Smith finds a GA with a pretty good combover. Smith remembers a YT video from Thinker of Thoughts that made him feel sad for Sister Bednar. Joe is reminded of a Black Mirror episode about unskippable ads. Smith is a fan of Gilligan, but not the island. This chapter uses the word suck and the guys want to get it to catch on again as a term. Smith issues himself the book of victory for Satan challenge, in which he comes up with some sort of compelling BOM fanfiction. Smith denies any HP-related LARPing activities. Smith wants to write about how the baller director showed up in the story. The guys challenge each other to find something objectively positive in this chapter, and they're having a tough time doing it. Smith reminds the listener that according to Rusty, God's love is not conditional (see link below). Nephi and the Lord have an awkward conversation about who is in charge, and that Nephi's last name is probably Smith. The guys think that God maybe started loving church members after they left the church. Smith got an incorrect answer on a history test in high school once, it was mainly a translation error though. The guys wonder what it would be like to talk to their bishop about a foot fetish. Joe points out that the verbiage in this chapter leaves room for the argument that God does not love those who will have him as their god. Also from this chapter: if you think about a sin, you've committed that sin in your heart. Joe gets triggered from being called past feeling when he was asking too many questions. In this chapter JS plays up the wicked getting punished by God which set quite a precedent psychologically for a young Joe and Smith. Music Provided by Eric VanAusdal with permission from the artist. We can understand that being under the influence of something can enlighten you, can make you seem more open, and perhaps, in these cases, more susceptible to the suggestions of others; especially in an overwhelming environment. In both Midsommar and Fifteen Million Merits, there is a small connection when it boils down to some important scenes. I spend a whole lot of time griping about Black Mirror but I do really like the show. I close with some of my favorite episodes. Notes:1:53 - Everybody's who's seen this episode immediately knew what I was talking about and their mind just went to a dark place. 2:59 - Spoiler Warning: I will discuss the plots and twists of all the episodes I cover. 3:52 - Fridge logic is one of my favorite terms from TV Tropes (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FridgeLogic) 4:33 - Fifteen Million Merits 7:00 - The Entire History of You 8:27 - Shut Up and Dance 11:38 - Nosedive 14:36 - Men Against Fire 16:50 - The movie Arrival has this same problem for me. 17:19 - San Junipero 24: 23 - My favorite episodes, starting with White Bear 28:22 - National Anthem 30:41 - Black Museum 32:03 - Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too (Oxford comma is omitted because that's how the title is officially written and yes, it killed me to leave it out). 33:09 - The Waldo Moment. 34: 38 - It was 2013. 36:15 - Side Rant (spoiler for Ender's Game). 40:32 - The oppression of the Uyghurs in China is a horrifying tragedy and should be receiving more media attention. 41:09 - I highly recommend Ordinary Men by Christopher Browning Intro and outro music: "Swim below as Leviathans" by Fireproof_Babies (featuring Ben Shewmaker) is licensed under CC BY.

En este episodio conversamos sobre "Fifteen Million Merits", segundo capítulo de la serie Black Mirror. En este se retrata una sociedad distópica del espectáculo y consumo, donde la humanidad desaparece frente a la superficialidad e intrascendencia.

Fifteen Million Merits presents a dystopia where most people ride stationary bicycles to generate its electricity. Although not exactly enslaved, they are motivated to keep riding by the merits they earn for their mileage -- which can be used to buy only necessities and baubles -- and the prospect of being demoted to custodial work if they stop. Most are alienated from their work, distracted only by meaningless entertainment that ranges from the cruel to the pornographic. Into this allegory of capitalism enter Bing and Abby, who test whether beauty and love provide enough reality and meaning to escape. In this conversation, we use Aristotle, Hegel, and Marx -- but especially Hegel -- to understand their situation.

The populace of ‘Fifteen Million Merits’ are controlled because they want to be controlled. We all secretly crave fascism, but don’t like it being called that. The most efficient forms of managing us are ones that we have accepted, or demanded. And what our society seems to demand most is not truth or justice, but rather entertainment. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/DimWits/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/DimWits/support

Note: This podcast has major spoilers for two episodes of "Black Mirror." Futurist Jonathan Crabb joins us to talk about Netflix's "Black Mirror" and what it can teach us about the dangers of future technology. Terrible Opinions Jonathan: White chocolate is the best kind. Jordan: In the long term, it's mean to let your kids be super picky with food. Matthias: The app business model is broken. "Could have been a 'Black Mirror' episode ..." We kick off by covering the strange real-life episode that was the false ballistic missile alarm in Hawaii on Saturday morning. Hawaii residents received an alert on their phones letting them know that a missile attack was on its way. "Seek immediate shelter. This is not a drill," the message read. Hawaii emergency officials revoked the warning 38 minutes later, but the damage was done. To Delete or Not to Delete? Matthias brings in a fireworks-inducing topic: Should Twitter delete President Donald Trump's account because of his threatening tweets toward other world leaders? Simulating God's Image? We look at two specific "Black Mirror" episodes: "Fifteen Million Merits" and "Hang the DJ." Jonathan admits that while he tends to be a positive person, he also takes the warnings in "Black Mirror" to heart. The show is basically telling people, "here's what will happen if X technology is used in a way that dials it up to 11." Somehow, we think it's OK to keep using that technology at a level 2 or 3 ... which is why we need to pay attention to "Black Mirror." "How would we treat the AI version of ourselves?" is a recurring question in "Black Mirror," and Jonathan characterizes this theme as an imitation of a common argument about God. We analyze the episode "Hang the DJ" and draw different lessons from the story about a futuristic dating app.
This time Kevin and Paul take a detour and talk about two episodes from the BBC tech-horror series, Black Mirror. Fifteen Million Merits: In the not too distant future we meet Bing, a man stuck on a stationary bike in a world of endless advertisements and worthless purchases. He just wants one true authentic moment. Is he willing to pay the price? White Bear: Victoria wakes up to a headache and not knowing who she is. As she searches for answers, she is being chased by mute hunters and being recorded by passive onlookers with their cell phones, unwilling to help her. Will finding out the truth about White Bear set her free?
415522 “It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Black Mirror Library.” Welcome back to our library listeners! This is our fourth episode and our second one where we explore a Black Mirror Episode, but our first one that we have a guest for! In this episode we welcome Chicago sound designer Steve Labedz to discuss who really are the winners and the losers this dystopian nightmare of a world? The answer basically being everybody loses here and nothing is gained except an extra serving of Cuppliance. We do all agree that Dustin is the WOOOORST though. So enjoy our discussion about this incredibly bleak world that we choose to live in for an hour and talk about at length. Also enjoy all of our MANY tangents on various pop culture topics.

We’ve always sort of called Charlie Brooker’s “Black Mirror” the Motherboard show, because while we love tech, we’re probably a bit more wary of its ability to lean dystopian than your average tech publication. So this week and next, we’re going to be talking about the new season of Black Mirror on Netflix. Today, we’re going to be talking about what the first three episodes—Nosedive, Playtest, and Shut Up and Dance say about our culture. Next week, we’ll be back talking about the end of the season—San Junipero, Men Against Fire, and Hated in the Nation. This week’s episode has spoilers for the first three episodes and some light discussion of the first season episode “Fifteen Million Merits.” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

As technology progresses in new, often fascinating and liberating ways, it is worth considering the role it has in our lives. Several works of science fiction have shown these advances and our reactions to them to be somewhat predictable. Black Mirror, a satire and dark comedy made by the BBC, offers many such conclusions in the form of troubling television episodes reminiscent of the Twilight Zone. In this conversation, we discuss our thoughts on the first season of the show which features the episodes The National Anthem, Fifteen Million Merits and The Entire History of You. We will be examining the second season later in November. As a warning, we do cover various crucial plot points in our review. If you would like to watch the show, please do not listen to this first.
