Premenstrual disorders can make life incredibly miserable. Any woman who's struggled with PMS will know that, and I covered that specific issue in the closing episode to Season 5. This episode is a follow-on from that, as I drill down into PMDD – premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Although it occurs in the 2nd half of the cycle, this isn't just a severe form of PMS. It's a hormone-based mood disorder caused by a severe reaction to the natural fluctuations of oestrogen and progesterone which can lead to intense emotional reactions, depression, negativity, brain fog and fatigue, amongst other things. There are no prizes for guessing that PMDD can get a lot worse during the perimenopause which is why I've drafted in some expert advice on this. My guest is Dr Lynsay Mathews. She's a lecturer in Public Health at the University of the West of Scotland and a leading researcher into PMDD, a condition she's struggled with herself. Lynsay launched the UK's first PMDD research agenda and works with a team of researchers on several studies covering a range of PMDD issues. She's just the woman we need for such a complex subject. We discuss what PMMD is; why it might happen; how it can affect you and your loved ones; how you know you've got it and the challenges of diagnosis. Lynsay talks through her own personal story of PMDD and how it inspired her to initiate numerous research projects into the condition. We look at the stats around PMDD and the number of unsuspecting women who may be struggling with symptoms. She also explains the various treatment options that are available. It's an incredibly thought-provoking discussion and made me wonder just how many women out there might have PMDD and don't realise it. If you suspect that it might be an issue for you and you'd like to find out more and perhaps sign up for one Lynsay's studies, I've put all the relevant links in the show notes. This month, the Happy Menopause Club is covering best breakfasts, there's a live Q&A on nutrition for bone health and you can discover 7 key things you need to know about the perimenopause. This week I want to give you some tools to actually alleviate that bloating, now you know why it's happening. I'm going to give you two types of tools, one set to deal with in the moment of bloating and another set for which are long-term strategies to help you to address the root cause.  So, let's start with the tools you can use in the moment. Many of these tools I'm about to share are based on my training with world leading SIBO doctor, Dr Allison Siebecker. I'm using her doses, which are safe and effective and if you'd like a reference for these doses, they are actually available on her website, under handouts, in a handout called Symptomatic Relief Guide. So these doses are available publicly, you don't need a prescription for them, but always consult your doctor before starting new supplements.  Read more. Welcome Back, Wellness Warrior!  Sharing something today that we ALL can relate to…back to hormone health today. We all have HOREMONES, are we listening to these little messengers though?? They are constantly relaying messages, but are we paying any attention?    Our guest today started paying attention and discovered something. She went on a journey to pursue peace in her hormone health. We are both nurses and love the body and have similar stories. Unfortunately, we have a lot of mic noises that I couldn't edit out- so sorry for the distracting noises. But gotta listen through it, because it's so good!    Lauren is a registered nurse, wellness coach, mom, Christ-follower and the host of the podcast PMS Made Peaceful. For years, Lauren struggled to manage debilitating negative and anxious thoughts that would bombard her in the week before getting her period. She would often feel like a failure as a wife and friend, and that she just didn't have the capacity to care for herself well. When she started to work with her body and the natural rhythms God had created her with through holistic wellness and implementing habits daily, things started to shift. She now also helps other Christian women who are wanting more emotional regulation during their premenstrual phase, so they can feel more calm throughout their whole cycle.   Let's go to battle!  Shalom Shalom,  Xx, Shan _______________________________  ……CONNECT…… WITH LAUREN:  1) Podcast: PMS Made Peaceful 2) Facebook Community: PMS Made Peaceful For Christian Women

We've all heard of circadian rhythms. The 24-hour cycle that dictates everything from body temperature, to sleep, to digestion. But mother nature is extremely complex and precise, so of course there must be other regular rhythms and patterns that exist. One of these rhythms you may not have heard of before is the infradian rhythm. This rhythm is reflected in plenty of different examples in nature, including humans, particularly in the female menstrual cycle. There are certain habits that have the potential to disrupt the natural state of hormones and the infradian rhythm. When one or both of these is out of alignment, the whole system can be affected, resulting in a cascade of negative side effects. To help us understand this further, I've brought on the amazing Kasia Stiggelbout, host of the Nourish podcast. Kasia shares her personal story, some potential causes of misalignment, and what can be done to resolve it. The effects of PMS impact almost all of us. The National Institutes of Health report that 90% of women of reproductive age experience several premenstrual symptoms varying from mild to severe and 20-40 percent experience Premenstrual syndrome (PMS scientifically). These monthly hormonal changes can manifest in a variety of symptoms from mood shifts, headaches, body pains, depression, anxiety, bloating, and irritability to just name a few.In essence, PMS is  a pain. For most of us, it's a time when we are not on our A-game and when we feel physically and emotionally weak and messy. And it can make motherhood extra hard. How are we supposed to love our children when our brains feel like they are going to snap? What does the Bible say about hormones or a woman's monthly cycle and how to deal with it? How does a faithful understanding of the salvation story change how we cope with PMS? Thankfully, the Word of God has lots to say on this topic and many others like it.Listen in to a helpful conversation with Krista Hart --Biblical counselor and mom to two teenagers-- on a Christian framework for dealing with hormones and some very practical nitty gritty strategies for coping with the effects of our cycles. ****Helpful links from Krista:On Seasons of Hormonal ChangeWhen It's "That TIme of the Month"

When you've got PMS on steroids, the rage and depression are exponential. Ever hear of Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder? They call it PMDD for short, and it's a very real and serious hormonal disorder that affects up to 10% of women! And it's much more common when paired with ADHD. Symptoms include things like mood swings (aka rage attacks), sadness, anxiety, hopelessness, depression, and even severe panic attacks. Many women with PMDD are either extremely tired or have bouts of insomnia. And then there's excessive crying and other emotional swings. Not to mention all the bloating, gastro issues, food cravings, and possible weight gain. Phew. I need a nap after writing that alone! Today my guest Heidi and I unpack what PMDD is, the symptoms of PMDD, how PMDD can be linked to postpartum issues, and how to talk to your doctor about getting a diagnosis. If you've been following along in 2022, we've talked a lot about menstrual health, hormones, and cycle syncing. We've uncovered numerous ways our menstrual cycle relates to ADHD symptoms in women. It's fascinating and disturbing at the same time. But there is hope, Successful Mama! Heidi Hogarth is a naturopath, a mom of two, and a PMDD survivor. She's on a mission to support women who suffer from PMDD and help them find the best natural health tools so they can get off the hormonal emotional rollercoasters & back to their calm, positive, and loving selves. She's a wealth of knowledge when it comes to understanding symptoms of PMDD. She offers insight into what supplements and dietary changes can help you when you feel like you are suffering from PMDD. A big thank you to Heidi for helping women understand their bodies so they can do what they can to live a happy and healthy life.
