What if the key to aging well had been hiding in plain sight—inside our cells, our food, and even… dolphins? That's exactly what Stephanie Venn-Watson, DVM, a veterinary epidemiologist, discovered while studying dolphins in the U.S. Navy's marine mammal program. She found that some dolphins were aging significantly slower than others, leading to the discovery of C15:0—a newly recognized essential fatty acid that supports cellular health, fights inflammation, and may even slow the aging process. In this episode of The Dr. Hyman Show, we dive into: How studying dolphins led to the discovery of C15:0 as the first essential fatty acid found in 90 years. Why a deficiency in this nutrient could be accelerating aging and chronic disease. How C15:0 strengthens cell membranes, reduces inflammation, and promotes longevity. The connection between diet, metabolic health, and optimal aging. What you can do to ensure you're getting enough of this essential fatty acid. There is a significant impact of food on brain health and overall well-being, with great importance placed on nutrient-dense, anti-inflammatory foods. Unfortunately, nutrient levels of modern crops are declining, but regenerative agriculture is helping to restore food quality. Specific brain-boosting foods such as leafy greens, small cold-water fish, and polyphenol-rich plants have an ability to reduce neuroinflammation, protect against cognitive decline, and enhance mental clarity. And, ultimately, identifying whole food sources of essential nutrients will support your entire body. In this episode, I discuss, along with Dr. Jeff Bland and Dr. William Li, practical tips on choosing the most nutrient-dense foods and how to harness their benefits for overall health. Dr. Jeff Bland is the founder of Big Bold Health, a company on a mission to transform the way people think about one of nature's greatest innovations—the immune system. Through Big Bold Health, Dr. Bland is advocating for the power of Immuno-Rejuvenation to enhance immunity at a global level, often through the rediscovery of ancient food crops and superfoods. To get there, he is building a network of small farms and suppliers throughout the US that take a clear stance on regenerative agriculture, environmental stewardship, and planetary health. Dr. Bland's career in health spans more than 40 years. A nutritional biochemist by training, he began in academia as a university professor. He then spent three decades in the natural products industry, working alongside other pioneers. A lifelong educator, Dr. Bland has traveled the world many times over in his role as the “father of functional medicine.” In 1991, he and his wife, Susan, founded The Institute for Functional Medicine. In 2012, he founded another educational nonprofit called the Personalized Lifestyle Medicine Institute. Dr. Bland is the author of The Disease Delusion: Conquering the Causes of Chronic Illness for a Healthier, Longer, and Happier Life, as well as countless additional books and research papers. Dr. William Li is a world-renowned physician, scientist, speaker, and author of Eat to Beat Disease: The New Science of How Your Body Can Heal Itself. He is best known for leading the Angiogenesis Foundation. His groundbreaking work has impacted more than 70 diseases including cancer, diabetes, blindness, heart disease, and obesity. His TED Talk, Can We Eat to Starve Cancer? has garnered more than 11 million views, and he has appeared on The Dr. Oz Show, Martha Stewart Live, CNN, MSNBC, NPR, Voice of America, and has presented at the Vatican's Unite to Cure conference. Like most things in life, when it comes to optimizing metabolic health, a nuanced perspective can help. Rather than viewing it as a black-and-white issue, we can take into consideration the big-picture social context we're facing that encourages ultra-processed foods, obesity, and lifelong medication as well as the micro-level of what people are experiencing as individuals and understanding how to help them when all else fails.  Today I'm thrilled to sit down with Dr. Tyna Moore and Calley Means for a grounded discussion that explores both sides of the spectrum, and everything in between.  In this episode, we discuss: The controversial discussion of GLP-1 agonists like Ozempic, weighing the pros and cons of these new drugs in treating obesity and metabolic crises (3:34) Challenging the notion of treating obesity with drugs like Ozempic (10:35) An unsettling revelation about the push for using Ozempic in children (12:04) Digging deeper into GLP-1 research and some of the benefits (32:51) Why are children being born metabolically challenged? (41:11) Dr. Moore's approach to using peptides with her patients and for her own crippling pain, and what they've seen (45:19) How our current healthcare system lacks policies and support for behavior change (1:27) While there are always differing views, we know for sure that our food and drug policies aren't serving the best interests of creating sustainable, empowered health for the masses. I hope you'll tune in to hear more from this comprehensive and lively discussion. What can we do about the brain inflammation that holds us back in fog, fatigue and trauma responses?  To help answer that question and share brain inflammation with you is my guest, Dr. Austin Perlmutter, is a board-certified internal medicine physician, New York Times bestselling author, published researcher, and the executive director for Big Bold Health, a food-as-medicine company focused on helping people rejuvenate health through better immune function. In the evolving field of trauma therapy, we're increasingly recognizing that healing isn't just about processing memories or changing thought patterns. The application of The Biology of Trauma lens is that it is just as much about addressing the impact trauma has had on our biology, which now keeps us stuck in our trauma responses.  One crucial aspect of this biological impact is brain inflammation. It is one of the most common yet most overlooked gatekeepers of trauma healing. Brain inflammation creates many of the symptoms that people attach to their trauma responses, yet often is what is triggering those trauma responses. Yes, you heard me right. It is not just people, places that can trigger our trauma response. It is also a specific immune cell in our brain - microglia.  In this episode, you'll learn why: Good insights from therapy seem to fade by the next day Small stresses feel overwhelming to your brain What you eat affects how well you can process emotions Relationship conflicts leave you mentally exhausted Your diet can dysregulate you just as much as your partner Your mind feels clearer in nature than in therapy For more information and show notes, please visit our website: https://biologyoftrauma.com/biology-of-trauma-podcast/

We delve into the historical significance, antioxidant properties, and gene-regulating capabilities of flavonoids. Dr. Bland highlights the role of these nutrients in promoting longevity and immune resilience. Our discussion also covers revolutionary insights into GLP-1 agonists and the benefits of Himalayan Tartary Buckwheat. This episode offers valuable information on how flavonoid-rich foods can fundamentally enhance well-being and immune function. Key Takeaways: Historical Significance: Bioflavonoids, originally termed Vitamin P, play a vital role in preventing diseases like scurvy and have been part of human diets for centuries. Antioxidant Properties: These compounds serve as powerful antioxidants, quenching damaging free radicals and reducing biological aging. Epigenetic Influence: Bioflavonoids regulate gene expression, impacting immune responses and metabolic processes, which is critical for longevity and disease prevention. GLP-1 Agonist: Foods rich in flavonoids stimulate GLP-1 production, influencing appetite regulation and metabolic health, paralleling the effects of popular weight-loss drugs like Ozempic. Himalayan Tartary Buckwheat: HTB is highlighted for its extraordinary immune-enhancing properties, high flavonoid content, and its role in regenerative agriculture.   More of Dr. Jeffrey Bland: Dr. Jeffrey Bland is a personable and highly respected thought leader who has spent more than five decades focused on the improvement of human health. That's right—we're born with many different genes, but that does not mean they are all active. Genes can be activated or silenced from so many different things, like what you eat, how you move, and how you restore your system.
