On this episode we are discussing New York Times bestseller Malibu Rising, by Taylor Jenkins Reid. Loosely linked to both of her previous smash hits, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Daisy Jones and the Six, Malibu Rising continues her theme of exploring the inner lives of the rich and famous. This time she takes us to Malibu in the early 80s, where four famous siblings throw an epic party to celebrate the end of the summer. But over the course of one night, each of their lives will be changed forever. ** Complicated Woman. It is Nina Riva's story and we each find different things relatable and interesting about her, but she is certainly not the only complicated woman in this novel. We dive into them all. (03:09) ** Scenes. Carinn & Kate pick their favorites and discuss how they relate to the book's larger themes and questions. (13:29) ** What's Your Damage, Heather? We discuss Nina's daddy issues and how being too self-sufficient and too selfless has hindered Nina's ability to find her true self. As usual, we get personal, and this turns into a hilarious discussion of our own damage. (44:32) ** What She Said. After we covered Daisy Jones & The Six, we had a surprising interaction with Taylor over DM that we had to share! Then we deep dive into more Taylor quotes and share our favorites about failure, having conviction and confidence, and finding fun when writing. (53:46) ** Crystal Ball. Carinn wants an entire book about Carrie Soto (Taylor, are you listening?!) and Kate looks into her crystal ball to predict where Nina's path may take her now that she has found her voice. (65:48). ** Who Won The Book? For Kate it's all about the vibe and for Carinn it's the nuanced depiction of infidelity, which Taylor does better than anyone else. (69:00) ** Takeaways. We discuss whether you have to get out of your comfort zone to ignite your career. (78:29) Follow us on Instagram and Facebook @popfictionwomen and on Twitter @pop_women. On this episode we are joined by internationally bestselling author and friend of the pod, Joanna Rakoff, to discuss Laura Dave's instant #1 New York Times bestseller and Reese Book Club Pick, The Last Thing He Told Me...a thriller rooted in hope! ** Complicated Woman. After an introduction to the book and our love of Laura Dave's backlist, we each share what we found remarkable about Hannah, who we declare a truly subversive female protagonist. (07:42) ** Killer Quotes. This book is filled with “killer quotes” but Carinn & Kate pick their favorites and discuss how they relate to the book's larger themes and questions. (28:33) ** What's Your Damage, Heather? This novel explores one of our favorites...mommy issues. Hannah was abandoned by her own mother and we chat about how that kind of trauma can imprint on a person for life. Joanna likens it to a memoir she loves, When She Comes Back, by Ronit Plank. (32:38) ** What She Said. We deep drive into Laura Dave, her ability to pivot, how she keeps getting better, and the decades long journey this book took to publication. (43:18) ** Takeaways. The book leaves us debating whether we could have done what Hannah did? And also wondering whether a woman can be the hero of her own story AND ALSO a true partner in a relationship. (54:30) ** Who Won The Book? For Kate it's the propulsive pacing and for Carinn it's Jake, the ex-fiance whose character jumps off the page! (67:25) ** Crystal Ball. Carinn looks into the future book she *wants* to read next, while Kate posits what she thinks Laura Dave may write should she actually pursue a potential sequel. You believe the faster you go, the faster things will change. But then you stop because you're not getting results fast enough OR you get burnt out because you were pushing so hard. A little while later you jump into a new thing and go really fast and hard again. The pattern repeats until you decide it's time to do it differently. For Kate, she decided to do it differently when I (pretty much) made her the first time she took Manifest $10K. I had created the program for people to do one assignment a day, and Kate is the reason it became a rule :) She came in like a bull in a china cabinet determined to change, while doing the same thing she'd always done. Go so fast to try and change that change doesn't have space or opportunity to happen. Thankfully, Kate is coachable. She listened when I said slow down. As she continued in The Enchanted Circle, she continued to listen and slow down even more. This allowed the work she was doing in Manifest $10K to actually start to shift things up. At the time of this interview, she is in her third year working with me and doing Manifest $10K for her second time. If you listen, you will hear how she's embraced the slow down in order to speed up growth. How she's following inspiration rather than forcing change. And what amazing things are happening because she's been embracing this for a while. If your money story is Survival and you feel like you've been less than successful at manifesting money or changing your life, I can help you! Join Manifest $10K and I'll show you how to slow down to speed up results. You can even pay me after you are successful. We may have initially resisted jumping on what felt like an over-hyped bandwagon for this HBO Max hit, but Hacks and the brilliance of Jean Smart won us over instantly! If you loved Hacks as much as we do, you'll want to listen to our discussion of these complicated women, Deborah and Hannah. We start by marveling at how their coming together allows us to love them each even more as individuals. ** Scenes. We wanted to discuss them all, but we managed to narrow it down to some of our favorites. We discuss Episode 2, “Primm”, which Carinn declares the best episode of TV ever! I think we're still humming that Selena Gomez song in our heads! (06:52); Episode 6, “New Eyes” where Deborah literally gets her eyes done, but figuratively they end up seeing each other in new ways (20:32); Episode 9, “The Interview,” has Kate on the couch, relating to Deborah's vulnerability with a reporter (32:43); and Episode 10, “I Think She Will”, is a finale with a fight, a funeral and a bombshell cliffhanger. (41:40) ** What's Your Damage? It's like the creators of Hacks just knew how much we love mommy issues! Talk about a theme that runs through-out this show! (56:25) ** What She Said (or in this case, What They Said). We deep dive into our first writing trio, Lucia Aniello, Paul Downs and Jen Statsky, marveling about the dynamic of these long-time friends and real life couple. (60:02) ** Who Won The Show? For Kate, the winner is generational conflict and for Carinn it's the brilliant reversal of typical female tropes displayed through-out this show. (66:37) **Takeaways. Kate takes a quote from co-creator Jen Statsky and gets personal about collaboration and saying yes. Carinn talks about ambition and the ways we see that depicted in Hacks are nuanced and original. The future of mental health and women's health with two healthcare CEOs Innovation in healthcare is one of the biggest stories of the last few years, and in this episode, host Sam Saperstein, talks with two CEOs who've been at the forefront of that acceleration. Kate Ryder is the founder and CEO of Maven Clinic, the largest telemedicine health provider for family health and women's health. And April Koh is founder and CEO of Spring Health, a digital wellness platform aimed at making mental wellbeing easy to navigate for businesses and employees. In this conversation, Kate and April discuss how they each drew from personal experience as they built their companies, how COVID-19 impacted telemedicine, and how sometimes knowing when to pivot is the key to continued success. Leveraging personal experience into start-up success Both Kate and April drew on their own experiences as healthcare consumers when they started their companies. For Kate, it was her interactions with the complex maternal healthcare systems that led her to believe there must be a simpler way for women to access the range of care they deserve. She recalls thinking in 2014, when she started Maven Clinics, that “there was a lot around the telemedicine space that was really exciting, but nothing was really geared toward women and families.” She also knew that it could be hard for women to access the range of specialty providers they needed as they navigated fertility, pregnancy, childbirth, and beyond. So, she founded Maven with the goal of providing women with a multidisciplinary care team to help them fill in the gaps that often exist in women's healthcare. Digital health or telemedicine is a key component of that, though Maven also offers in-person options for those who prefer that experience. For April, it was her decade-long struggle with mental health that inspired her to start Spring Health. “I went through a really lonely and a really long process of trial and error to figure out something that would work for me,” she recalls. “And I found kind of randomly what worked for me, but I know so many people are struggling in that way today.” While so many other aspects of life were becoming data-driven and personalized, she felt that mental healthcare “felt like a total guessing game, it felt like it was stuck in the dark ages.” When she learned of groundbreaking research showing that machine learning could be used to personalize mental healthcare, she reached out to the researcher, Dr. Adam Chekroud. Together they launched Spring Health with the mission of making mental healthcare more accessible and personalized for everyone. Navigating change and knowing when to pivot As healthcare CEOs at a time when telemedicine was just taking off, both Kate and April learned to adapt and move fast. Recalling a time when she had found a great mental health care provider a few blocks from home, but could not make herself leave her bed to get to an in-person appointment, April says, she always knew that “the future of mental health care is virtual.” The pandemic accelerated trends toward telemedicine that had already started. Spring Health was off to a fast start, leveraging AI to provide personalized care, and benefiting from the overall trends toward telemedicine. But they faced a hiccup when their original model of selling into provider systems was being hampered by those system's entrenched workflow issues. April's response was to pivot quickly to owning their own provider network and eliminating the workflow bottlenecks. “It's helped us move forward in our vision to deliver care,” she says. “And it's one of the things I'm most proud over the past five years. I recommended a hard pivot.” At Maven, Kate recalls a different type of pivot: shutting down a failing product. The product was birth-control subscriptions for college students, which Kate says they launched after hearing from enough parents that they would buy such a subscription for their college students. “And we realized later on, they were just being polite,” she says. “Actually, they didn't want to think about their daughters having sex in college.” Eight months after launching the product, Maven shut it down. Luckily, they were already achieving success on other fronts and the quick pivot to shutting down the failed product spared them from big losses.
At I Heart My Life, we witness so many examples of the great things that can come from trusting your instincts. The problem? So many people lack the alignment needed to trust their gut and fully step into their calling. Maybe you feel like you’re meant for something more but can’t quite get the clarity you need. Perhaps you’re feeling stuck or unfulfilled but can’t put your finger on the solution. If so, this is the episode for you. As it turns out, our intuition can guide us to our truest callings and deepest desires. That’s why I’m excited to bring you this episode all about how creating alignment in your physical space can make room for mental, emotional, and spiritual alignment as well. It’s all in the power of Feng Shui. Now, I wasn’t really sure if I was a believer until I sat down with Kate MacKinnon, a certified Feng Shui practitioner. Hearing her story, what she does, and how she uses physical changes in her client’s space to transform their lives totally shifted my perspective. This episode covers the basics of Feng Shui, explaining why you should implement it in your life and how it can open the doors for life-changing transformation. From client success stories to tangible tips for getting aligned in your space (at home or on the road), this episode will have you believing in this powerful practice too. This episode begins with Kate taking us way back, outlining the journey that led her to pursue her passions of Feng Shui full-time (despite a successful corporate career). While this episode offers insight into the power of Feng Shui, it also serves as a reminder of the importance of following your instincts and pursuing your passions. For Kate, that passion was helping others achieve balance and alignment through rearranging their physical space. Follow along as we discuss the principles behind the practice and how our external environments reflect our inner truths. (Is your mind blown yet?). Kate details why Feng Shui works to help her clients (and how it can help you, too). Her services have led to clients landing dream gigs, achieving new levels of wealth, and finding more happiness. You know I’m all about helping you take action and make positive changes in your life. That’s why I ask Kate to share tips for how you can bring Feng Shui to any space you are in, whether it’s at home, work, or on the go. The best part? These tips are pretty simple! As it turns out, small and simple changes can lead to big results. It’s all about creating a space that makes space and energy for you to step into your most authentic self. I’ve always known alignment is vital to long-term success and happiness, and after this conversation, I was so ready to have Kate come into my house and work her Feng Shui magic. Give it a listen, and I’m sure you will be too. In this episode… [02:30] Welcome, Kate! Learn how resilience and desire paved the way toward her success. [07:19] Why Kate followed her instincts, despite success in the corporate world. [09:29] What finally pushed Kate to step into her passion full-time. [16:59] Kate dives into Feng Shui (and why it’s important to your wellbeing). [20:01] Learn more about how Kate uses Feng Shui to help her clients. [22:24] Hear some of Kate’s Feng Shui success stories (and why it works). [26:32] The power of giving yourself permission. [28:18] How to bring Feng Shui wherever you go. [32:08] Tips for implementing Feng Shui in your space to create alignment. [35:27] How the I Heart My Life Mastermind has transformed Kate’s business. [40:50] Kate’s advice for living a life better than your dreams. Quotes: “It’s important [to remember] how instinctual we are and how that can actually lead us in the direction we're meant to go.” -Emily Williams “Our homes actually reflect the choices we make. Our homes are a map of who we are. The choices we make in our external environment actually reflect what's going on internally.” -Kate MacKinnon “I think it's really important to follow what feels right for you. When I'm working with people, I give guidelines. I don't always say, ‘Do this exact thing, and it has to look this way,’ because I really believe people know. So it’s about creating that space because it feels good.” -Kate MacKinnon “Sometimes we're scared, and we think fear is the reason why we shouldn't do it. I've learned in my own experience that fear is a reason why I should do it because it's the thing that I really want.” -Kate MacKinnon “Desire is just leading us towards more life.” -Emily Williams Links & Resources: Follow the Podcast: I Heart My Life Show on Apple Podcasts I Heart My Life Show on Spotify Connect with Kate: Kate’s website Kate on Instagram Kate on Twitter Connect with Emily: I Heart My Life Website I Heart My Life on Instagram I Heart My Life on Facebook I Heart My Life on LinkedIn Email: info@iheartmylife.com Book a Call Episode Sponsor: I Heart My Life Mastermind

Fishing doesn't come easy, at least for most of us. It's certainly fun and exciting, it can also be frustrating and depressing. We are in awe when we are watching professional anglers do this for a living. We get inspired to go out there and replicate that level of success. So often we forget the sacrifices and hardships that come with it. Being a Professional Kayak Angler is not as easy as you might think. For Kate those sacrifices are bigger and harder than what most people are willing to bear. Kate's life journey over the last couple of years has inspired not just women but all kinds of people from different walks of life. An inspiration that transcends fishing. In honor of Valentine’s Day, we start by discussing what we are drawn to in romcoms, ones we’ve covered and ones we haven’t yet! Let’s unpack depictions of LOVE in pop fiction... ** Express Yourself. No matter how they get there, the truly memorable moments are when someone finally says the words. Words matter to writers like us so when it’s done right, the declaration of love is everything! We discuss the “big speeches” from Dirty Dancing, Runaway Bride, The Notebook, Forces of Nature, Notting Hill, Say Anything, and Bridgerton. (04:07) ** What’s Your Theme, Heather? A play on our regular episode segment, What's Your Damage, Heather? We discuss the particular themes in love stories that we are drawn to, and might reveal a little something to say about our own journeys and points of vulnerability, what really gets us and why. * For Carinn, it’s the theme of the thin line between love and hate. She believes that both emotions are loaded in relationships where you feel so much. She discusses Simon’s speech to the Queen in Bridgerton and When Harry Met Sally. In the novel Beautiful Disaster by Jamie Maguire, we see how to hurt people can heal each other, even if the one they love triggers old pain. Real love makes you both stronger and weaker. She ends reading passages from Gone Girl where Nick describes Amy as his “forever antagonist.” Kate jumps on this theme too, somehow mentioning two of her childhood favorites, Anne of Green Gables and Pride and Prejudice! (25:15) * For Kate, it’s the theme of “the one that got away.” She discusses the variations of this theme in Bethany Chase’s novel, The One That Got Away, Emily Giffin’s Love The One You’re With, and Jill Santopolo’s, All The Light We Lost, then moves on to the movies, The Notebook, Sweet Home Alabama, and Always Be My Maybe. What Kate loves is how the one that got away can act as a mirror to remind the protagonist of who she really is. Carinn then declares the one that got away is really HER! Mind blown. (47:40) ** Straight To The Source. We aren't the only ones fascinated by love and relationships. Many of the authors we interviewed chatted with us about the topic. We’re going straight to the source and sharing one of our favorite clips from our complicated conversations with New York Times bestseller author, Emily Giffin. (63:03) ** What is Love, Anyway? We play a clip from one of our favorite episodes, Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid, where we grapple with this big question! (68:01). ** We end with words of wisdom found in a NYT essay from Roxanne Gay and discuss why a Valentine’s episode was non-negotiable this year (76:48). For Kate, Joe, and John, the offseason is the furthest thing from break time. That's because the draft order is now settled, which means we've got another layer of clarity on where Seattle might be picking at No. 12 overall and beyond. Despite *gestures in every direction*, high school baseball showcases have continued across the country, giving scouting departments and public scouting enthusiasts the chance to watch from afar as the next wave develops. We take listener questions on who the M's could target now that they're just outside the top-10. Is this the year that the M's finally go with a high-upside prep position player? Kate Harvie was born to teach people how to tell their stories. She does this with writing, editing, marketing, brand strategy, and development online and offline. She develops brand narrative and messaging and helps businesses and artists tell their stories on all platforms.Kate stepped into a crosswalk in 2009 to retrieve her windblown hat and was struck by a passing ambulance. In the coming days, she would undergo a series of surgeries, including removing a portion of her skull. When Harvie came to, she was disoriented and confused. She could not remember information for longer than a minute. Her road to recovery was long — and made longer without a proper compass to help her find the way. During that journey, she published ‘Believe It and Behave It’, which tells the important lessons she learned after her traumatic brain injury. The book serves as a blueprint for people who also want to recover from trauma, conquer adversity and take back their life. Key Points from the Episode with Kate Harvie: Kate is the contributing writing for the Universal Hip Hop Museum, and does Strategy & Communications for The Vanderbilt Republic and Mid Heaven Network Her friend’s mother always says, “People who don’t have a job have a lot of time.” What Kate learned is that, when the linearity of our lives goes haywire, we eventually can figure out where we are built to land This is informed by how we grow up, what we learn and who we learn from - whether we replicate, duplicate or inspired by Kate had been laid off from a job in 2008 during the Great Recession A week later, she went to Brooklyn to see a friend, and, while they were walking, Kate was struck in a crosswalk by an ambulance She spent the following two-and-a-half weeks in a coma, had multiple surgeries, and was told, based on NY law, she was not able to live by herself due to the nature of her traumatic brain injury She was left with memory abilities below the 1st percentile, which is similar to an intellectually disabled person despite Kate being 34, having graduated from law school, and being fully independent She had to move back to Ohio to live with her parents during her recovery The five months she spent at her parents was an incredibly introspective and difficult time for her, and then coming back to a version of New York that was very different from what she had left was very hard Kate found herself really wanting to connect with people, but felt like she couldn’t keep asking her friends for time, and when she got it, felt disconnected from the version of them that they had gone on to be while her life was put on pause Feeling left out like that felt very personal, like their going on with their lives was unkind to her She found herself unable to ask for help, and realized that this came from a lack of courage Courage is a part of self-awareness, which you must have to understand anyone else or how to relate to them The tenacity of getting through things is valuable, but can also be a lack of vulnerability that we are mislabeling as tenacity When something destructive happens (bankruptcy, losing a job, being left at the alter), our perspective can change because nothing will be the same We talked about Kate’s volunteer work, which became like her full-time job Someone asked her if she did so much volunteering because she felt guilty or like she had a debt because she was supposed to be dead, which took her aback She thought about whether she felt a debt or was required to volunteer or give back What she ultimately took from it was that time is a gift She shared the notion of “getting to” do things rather than “having to,” meaning that everything you do is a gift When she did volunteer, she felt so thankful that the organization wanted her and gave her the chance to be there, and felt that she was the one gaining from her participation, more so than the organization In a life where she felt disconnected from what was around her, this was a very strong pull For Kate, regardless of the therapy she was undergoing (physical and psychological), she still felt stuck What she realized is that, for progress to be made, we have to figure out what will really work There’s the academic stuff, like eating clean and exercising if the goal is to lose weight, but there’s so much more you must do that will actually lead to success You can go to therapy and respect the clinician, but unless you ask questions and genuinely listen and think about what they’re saying, it won’t help For Kate, it was having the clarity to speak up and say that something isn’t working for her, and she needs help finding something that would help When we decide, actively, courageously, embarrassingly to show up as we are, how we are, that is us showing up in our vulnerability, which we need to embrace This only occurs when we let ourselves tell our stories Trauma is not only getting hit in the head of physically attacked, it’s anything that has you devastated or emotionally harmed We are all living in a place of trauma in the pandemic When someone asks you how you are doing, be honest with the answer Don’t just say, “I’m fine.” Honestly creates ways to make things better Links: Website: kateharvie.com/ Book: Believe It and Behave It Twitter: @glossgal Facebook: @kate.harvie.3 Instagram: @glossgal Tumblr: glossgal.tumblr.com Subscribe to The Do a Day Podcast Keep Growing with Do a Day Get Bryan's best-selling first book,Do a Day, which is the inspiration for this show and can help you overcome your greatest challenges and achieve in life. At the time of this interview, things were good for Kate. She had brought in $918 dollars in the previous few days, bringing her total to $148,747.02. Prior to that Kate’s business had stalled. She has been trying to stuff down her Future Self. Putting her in a closet and telling her to be quiet. The problem is you can’t do that once you’ve started the journey to becoming your Future Self. Last April, Kate stepped into her Future Self big time when she participated in the Future Self event at the Paradise Valley Castle. She left there more of her Future Self, yet she was still trying to be her current self. When she left the Paradise Valley Castle, she forgot her jean jacket. It’s the jean jacket she wore in her $10K photo shoot. It used to be her favorite. When she didn’t have it, she had to get a new one, one that was more her Future Self. And she wore the new one, a lot. Whenever she put on that jacket it activated her Future Self feelings; confident, sexy and classy. She was constantly activating her Future Self, so you can see why stuffing her wasn’t working out too well. When you don’t open the space and step into your Future Self, she’ll do things to help you move the process along. Often those things are painful. It’s painful to push against and yet it often happens in the process of fully developing into your Future Self. It’s what Kate experienced for several months until it came to a head. For Kate that was realizing she had to let some things go, rather than hold on. Kate Cretsinger is the Founder and Owner of K8 4 Wellness. She is the mother of 2 beautiful young adults. For Kate, music has been a way to process and navigate hard moments in her life, and she hopes that by sharing this in song that it can be the conversation starter for others to connect. 21 beautiful days. That’s how long it took for Kate from Bags Always Packed to get to Everest Base Camp and back. What was incredible was how she did it. On a budget, last-minute, and solo. Listen on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and all other platforms; just search “Between The Mountains” or Ask Alexa! Trekking To Everest Base Camp Before we start, feel free to click here to access Kate’s blog on solo trekking to Everest Base Camp. It includes everything you need to know, so I highly recommend having a browse of that and more on her website. What was fantastic about her trip, was the side-trip she took towards the end, and her finale. I’ll let you listen on, but it sounds just so stunning, and a perfect way to end her time there. After seeing the cheapest tour priced at around $3000, she figured this was definitely outside of a backpacker’s budget. So, her thoughts were that as she was exploring India and Nepal before this, she would meet a few others who wanted to take the pilgrimage. However, getting closer to the time frame there was still no-one headed that way. So, off Kate went by herself. And what a brilliant decision that was. I’ve spoken before how solo-travel is so important in regards to self-development and headspace. For Kate, she was already a strong and independent person, so heading out was no problem. You can hear this in how she tackled her trip to Tonga. The challenge didn’t seem overly ridiculous to her, and was on her bucket list. So, confronting where to stay, budget, altitude and the dodgy-yet-probably-fine flights to the start point, Kate cracked on and managed to complete the journey. Hear in this podcast how she did it, the route she took and the people she eventually met. Finally, hear about her majestic end to a wonderful three weeks. -------------------If you enjoy the show please subscribe/follow and share with a friend! Every person I speak to has his or her own unique story of when and how this pandemic hit them, and each is so distinctly beautiful and different. So in this Connection thru Chaos series, I want to give people the chance to share their firsthand accounts. In this episode, we’ll hear from Conversion Copywriter and Messaging Expert, Ms. Kate Dramis. Kate helps online entrepreneurs write copy to sound more dope so that they can connect with their ideal clients more deeply and grow their business in both income and impact. Kate remembers things really changing when she came back from her Mastermind and realized everything was going into lock down and she still needed groceries! She remembers feeling very disconnected and misaligned. Kate also mentions how being an extrovert during this time is challenging. She lives alone with her pets, and she loves her pets, but she misses the connection with people. Getting on Zoom calls or Facetime with friends and family have been very helpful for her. For Kate, one beautiful gift about this time is being able to take the time to re-evaluate your business. It has also really allowed business owners to get scrappy and go back to their roots and remember where they came from. Maybe as you’ve grown and scaled, you’ve done a lot of launching for programs and backed off of one-on-one coaching, but now may be a great time to go back to that if you need to generate revenue. Or perhaps now is a great time to create a lower-ticket offer to let people get to know you and trust you, so later down the road they’ll feel comfortable purchasing a higher-ticket item. You can look at this experience as a negative or a positive one. This time is giving people the opportunity to be creative, and the opportunity to show up, serve, and lead. Keep asking yourself what is triggering you and how you are working through it, and share those helpful strategies! Lead people through it. Be that light and hope for your community. Miss Americana & Taylor Swift: cosmically complicated Saturn’s Return: Did astrology have a hand in the sometimes muddled arc of Miss Americana? (at :54) Good Girl: Taylor tells us at the outset that the moral code she lives by, and has been taught to adhere to, is that of the “good girl.” For Kate, this personally hit close to home. But Carinn hopes that Taylor understands that she's achieved levels of “good” and applause that no one else will ever reach. After all, you’re still Taylor freakin’ Swift! (at 11:44) Work harder or accept the game is rigged?: We watch Taylor take a painful call in which she finds out that she did not receive any major Grammy nominations for her album Reputation. We both agree that this scene is heartbreaking and her disappointment so relatable. Carinn wanted more moments like this of emotional truth. Kate marvels at her immediate response - “I just need to make a better record” - is it avoidance of the pain or an indication of an extreme work ethic? Maybe she just needs to realize the game is sometimes rigged. (At 19:12) Kanye West Feud. The drama with Kanye plays a key role through-out Miss Americana, starting with now infamous 2009 VMA awards when he interrupts Taylor during her acceptance speech for Video of The Year. We are both taken aback about how bad that moment was, and for a 19-year old girl, what a foundational trauma it was to stage on be publicly discounted. All Taylor did that day was win, and yet we discuss how an a woman in the music industry she somehow has to spend years stuck in this narrative trying to make it right. Some great songs and personal growth came out of this feud, but it doesn’t change the fact that it was deeply unfair to her to have ever been enmeshed in it. (At 24:32) Her Lover. Carinn loves the snippets where Taylor’s boyfriend, Joe Alwyn, is recording her singing “Call It What You Want.” It’s touching and sweet, but it left us both wanting more Joe, more glimpses into their relationship. (At 32:22) Lonely at the Top: After Taylor wins her second Grammy for album of the year, she poignantly asks herself what was it all for if she has no one to call or share it with? It’s lonely at the top of the mountain, but when she then does mention that she has found love we don’t get to see Joe’s face or even any little moments between, leaving us both totally unsatisfied. (At 33:10) Reprogramming shame spirals: Taylor certainly does gets personal about her body image issues and how she used to starve at times after seeing unflattering photos of herself. Kate is impressed with Taylor’s ability to talk herself out of these shame spirals — changing the channel in her brain — and feels like that kind of awareness and reprogramming could be beneficial is so many situations. (At 39:08) Sexual Assault: In this powerful storyline about Taylor’s infamous case against the DJ who groped her, Carinn finally gets the perspective and emotional impact she wanted and needed from Miss Americana. We discuss why the burden is always on the woman — why didn’t you scream, why didn’t you fight him off — to explain why she didn’t act the way society (mistakenly) believes she was supposed to in that situation. Carinn reminds of us of a favorite quote from Jessica Knoll’s Luckiest Girl Alive: “You only scream when you’re finally safe.” (At 46:48) Politics: The sexual assault trial pushed Taylor to find her voice to speak out against a Republican senatorial candidate from her home state even against the vehement objection of her father and other advisors. A nice girl keeps her mouth shut, but Taylor is ripping off the muzzle. We’re both super impressed. (At 54:20) Harnessing the Full Power of Her Voice: That’s part of the tag line for Miss Americana but Carinn thinks the movie is a little light on that, more accurately she is in the process of harnessing her voice. She compares it to Beyoncé’s documentary, Life Is But A Dream, and notes how...

Love Actually: love, actually, is complicated and Love Actually is complicated too. A fan favorite but also a critics’ favorite to bash. We face the attacks head on so we can put the cringe behind us and get to the really good stuff. (Starts at 2:06) Is this even a love story? Carinn argues that romance and love are two different things in the context of a relationship. Kate acknowledges that the movie celebrates love and relationships in all different forms, even if there are some depressing or darker aspects explored. In the end, they agree love is certainly all around. (At 14:46) Are there complicated women in Love Actually? Absolutely. Emma Thompson, Laura Linney, a young Keira Knightly, Martine McCutcheon. Enough said. (At 19:05) Best and worst storylines. Carinn plays hopeless romantic as she gushes on the Jamie and Aurelia story (and of course she ties it to a Taylor Swift lyric). Kate cringes at the iconic cue card scene where Mark declares his love for Juliette (“to me you’re perfect”) because, hello, it’s his best friend’s wife. Wtf!? For Kate, the stand-in porn stars may have cutest love story of all. Go figure. (At 35:08) Love is Everywhere. Especially as we listen to Hugh Grant's voice in the infamous opening clip. (At 49:29) Stay complicated!

Seeing Further is the next pillar of becoming your Future Self and this pillar starts the process over again. Becoming your Future Self is the repeated process of getting in touch with her, then stepping into her, then seeing further into her life and repeating the process. Each time you do this you see deeper and deeper into her life. Then you become her on a deeper and deeper level. For Kate, part of that seeing further was seeing that her Future Self does group coaching rather than individual coaching. She got some experience being that coach at the Paradise Valley Castle as she cooked and taught about nutrition. Listen to hear all about Kate’s experience becoming more of her Future Self! Kate Ahl is the founder of Simple Pin Media and the host of The Simple Pin Podcast. She launched her business in January of 2014, and by November, it was a full-fledged marketing agency. She now has a team of 40 and services hundreds of Pinterest accounts. According to statistics that Kate shared 93% of Pinterest users are looking to buy. Getting your content or product in front of those users is what Kate and her team do best. Kate began her podcast in 2016 to teach, share her voice, and market her service. She interviews other people who are using Pinterest in creative ways to build their lists and increase revenue. Today, she shares her business journey including the results and lessons from starting a podcast. She also shares pinterest tips that others can use for their podcasts and enlightens us about Pinterest marketing and some of the benefits of Pinterest marketing. Show Notes [03:08] We met in person at Social Media Marketing World in 2018. [03:50] Kate's podcast is The Simple Pin Media Podcast. [04:21] Kate was doing Facebook marketing for a friend in 2013, when an algorithm change led to lost traffic. Kate and some of her friends migrated over to Pinterest with the hopes of long-term traffic. [05:16] Kate enjoyed marketing on Pinterest and the long-term stability of the platform. [06:09] One of the main misconceptions about Pinterest is that it's only for women. Pinterest warms up potential customers. Pinterest marketing is part of the awareness stage, because it is where people go to plan things. [07:24] The leap from Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn is a very hard mindset shift to make for some marketers. [08:58] It can be more difficult to keep track of ROI with Pinterest. [09:46] For Kate, her Pinterest goal is to get people to her podcast and blog. Her ROI is based on a lead, but it's different for everyone. [10:43] Kate converts her podcast content into blog posts and sends her Pinterest traffic to those posts. Pinterest users are searching for content, so you could send them to a review or a tip. [11:37] Pinterest likes vertical images. Use that as billboard advertising or a hook. [12:04] Pinterest users have two habits. They either scroll mindlessly through the main home feed that they arrive on or they search for a specific phrase. [13:45] Simple Pin was originally designed to be a side hustle. Things started to grow and Kate was building her voice. In 2016, she decided to podcast. [15:45] She wanted to have good systems in place and outsource everything but recording. Knowing Pro Podcast Solutions was taking care of everything else gave her peace of mind. [16:35] Tools that Kate uses include PPS for editing, a spreadsheet for content management and their Facebook group to help surface content. [17:32] She tries to stay ahead and usually records on Thursdays. She also hired a podcast writer who makes the blog post. [18:39] Kate has a team of 40. The biggest part of her team is organic management for clients. She also has a small part of the team for marketing, affiliates, and launches. She has a community manager, herself, and an operations manager. [19:44] This year Kate is investing more into marketing and the podcast. [20:29] The scariest part of podcasting for Kate was just doing it and seeing how it would be received. She asks our team about stats and things like that. [23:18] Things that held Kate back were wondering if people would like the sound of her voice. Her and her husband also got sick and pushed the start back. [25:05] It's normal to not go back and listen to your podcasts. [26:05] Kate's parents are both entrepreneurs. She set a great example for them. She was impressed by their follow-through and perseverance. They also taught her great customer service. [29:37] Kate always thought she would be a teacher. She finally discovered her gift was in leadership and leading a team and building a business. [33:37] For Kate, her business shapes her podcast. [35:23] She defines success when her listeners actually put her tips into practice and then eventually come on as clients. Her goal is to empower clients to grow their business using Pinterest, so that they can afford to hire her team. [36:29] The podcast has three goals new customers, new Pinterest professionals, and teaching people Pinterest marketing. [37:33] At a conference, a listener gave Kate a picture that her daughter drew while they were listening to Kate's podcast together. [38:45] Your voice is being projected into people's lives with a podcast. [40:31] Kate is reading Dave Ramsey's Legacy Journey right now. [41:10] One of Kate's future goals is to do corporate consulting for big brands. [41:43] She has stopped comparing her business to others and stopped being afraid of making mistakes. Originally from Buffalo, NY, Kate studied Psychology & Social Sciences and earned her Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University at Buffalo before relocating to Gloucestershire, England in mid-2008. She changed careers in 2013 from Social Care to Special Educational Needs, where she quickly developed an interest in autism. After being recommended Rudy Simone’s Aspergirls in July 2015, her perception and understanding of herself changed -- “everything suddenly made sense”. Today on the podcast, whole class novels and choice. How do we have it both ways; reading literature deeply and also fostering joyful, independent learning? In Kate Robert's new book, A Novel Approach: Whole-Class Novels, Student Centered Teaching and Choice, Kate examines the troubles and triumphs of both whole-class novels and independent reading. She says we can find a student-centered, balanced approach to teaching reading. As an English teacher, Kate has seen whole-class novels build community, but she’s also seen too many kids struggle to read them—and either abandon reading altogether or become the reader who’s been left behind. Kate’s had better success getting kids to actually enjoy reading when they choose their own books within a workshop model. Many know Kate from her work with Teacher’s College Reading and Writing Project, but she’s been thinking about this topic since before then. For Kate, the idea started back when she observed the paradox her father, an english professor, struggled with in his teaching.A Novel Approach is accompanied by classroom videos where you can watch Kate put her ideas into practice with students. We’ll be previewing these videos on the Heinemann blog and on Kate’s website. To see the videos, read blogs from Kate, and to download a sample chapter, visit blog.Heinemann.com. Kate McKibbin is the self-professed very-tall, super nerdy founder of the blog, Secret Bloggers’ Business, and creator of several successful online blog courses and workshops. Cutting her teeth in the magazine industry in 2007 (when online shopping was just starting to take off), Kate created one of Australia’s largest independent lifestyle blogs (Drop Dead Gorgeous Daily), and grew to a team of five with more than 500,000 visitors a month and several awards to show for her efforts. Even though her much-loved blog was doing well, Kate still felt called to do more and help more people. In 2014, she created her second business, Secret Bloggers’ Business, to share everything she’d learned about how to create, grow and run a successful blogging business. She did so well that in 2015 she was awarded the Female Entrepreneur of the Year award for her contributions to women in technology. Today, Kate has made it her mission to help bloggers and creatives around the world turn their passions into something that’s profitable, too. So perhaps you’re looking to get into blogging, but don’t know if you have what takes. Here’s a few things to keep in mind. While a lot of work goes on behind the scenes of a blog, you’re not going to get very far if you haven’t found your passion. Keep in mind that while blogs used to only be about the person who wrote it (what they ate, what they watched etc.), today’s bloggers must understand that it’s not about THEM! People will follow you based on your point of view, your knowledge and expertise. But don’t worry! “You don’t have to be the biggest expert in the world. You just have to be a few steps down the track from where your audience is at and help them.” Also, content, content, content. Are you constantly creating and sharing your findings online? If you can find a group of people who you know you would love to help – and you have the content, experiences and skills to back it up, go for it. You can’t go wrong if you’re going into it from a place of service. So, where do you start? Kate suggests the following steps: Find your niche. Go “free range” for a bit if you have multiple ideas and can’t decide. What are you drawn to? Put some feelers out there (social media, existing contacts that you may have). What types of things get more engagement? Start putting some of your ideas/content out there and see what draws people in and what sticks. Brainstorm content. This is a biggie. Come up with as many ideas as possible (Kate suggests 100). What themes could you use (season, different times of the year etc.)? Just because you think it’s great doesn’t mean it’s going to resonate with your audience. Let your audience tell you what direction they want you to go. If you do start a blog, be sure to have an extreme amount of PATIENCE. Allow 6-12 months to see any type of reward. For Kate, one of her biggest benefits was to have the freedom to do work that she loved. Give it your all, but also be cautiously optimistic. “Set yourself up so you feel safe enough to take a scary leap.” When you’re starting out, be super responsive to your audience and be CONSISTENT in your content. This doesn’t mean you have to put out things daily. It can be once a week or month. Just figure out what’s realistic for you and do that. Keep in mind that nothing in life, especially a blog, has guarantees. And you can be certain that others are doing something similar to you. But here’s the thing…all audiences and bloggers are different in SO many ways. “Don’t compare yourself to others in your space. Find what works for you, but still provides great value to your audience. Focus on you and what’s right for your audience.” There will be bumps along the road, but stick to it and don’t give up! “If you’ve got something to say, if you’ve got something to give, and you’ve got a burning fire that says you have to do it, and you feel that pull. There’s no way you’re going to let yourself fail.” In This Episode You Will Hear About: Blogging Being a Blogger Online Business Online Training Being an Entrepreneur Success Resources: secretbloggersbusiness.com From Blog to Profit, Free Blogging Workshop: JoinTheBlogParty.com IG: @secretbloggersbusiness FB: facebook.com/secretbloggersbusiness Follow me on social media @LoriHarder on Instagram and Lori Harder on Facebook. You can’t get further contrast than moving from the beaches of Sydney to the mountains of Canada – for Kate Wan the shift was a continuation of an expat lifestyle based around her husband’s career in the mining industry. Having traveled extensively during their younger days the couple have experienced the expat lifestyle in both the US and Canada. For Kate the move overseas provided an opportunity to start her own business which now operates in 3 different countries – but it’s not all about work. Kate has created a business based around work life balance in one of the most beautiful places in the world – and manages to find time to ski a couple of times per week during the winter. She has written for Huffington post among others and will shortly be releasing a book that has already picked up awards ahead of its launch. You can find out more about her journey via her Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/tradesecretsbusinessconsultants What I learned from Kate’s interview: Sometimes being an expat can empower you to try things you might not otherwise do. For Kate she was able to start a new business from scratch without the pressure of expectation (or failure in front of her peers) while her husband provided income security for her. Work/Life balance is so often talked about but seldom followed through on. Sometimes it’s about setting yourself up in the right environment that will make you happy and give you the chance to escape when you need to. Working an online lifestyle in a place as pretty as Rossland British Columbia is a natural cure for any overworking disease. Where would your dream working location be?
Kate Taylor - Staff Writer, Entrepreneur.com Kate Taylor is a staff writer for Entrepreneur.com. Kate covers franchises and anything relating to the franchising and entrepreneurs. She has been with Entrepreneur for nearly two years. She was hired and didn't know she was going to be writing about franchising until the day she started work. Little did she know, she found franchising intriguing and really enjoys learning and sharing her knowledge about franchising. Kate was a history major in college, but she always wanted to be a writer. Before working for Entrepreneur.com, she interned for Forbes and found an appreciation for business writing. Kate separates herself from the competition by consistently writing new content. For example, some people start blogs or writing with the best intentions, but people often quit before they develop an audience because they aren't receiving any feedback or getting any response it's easy for people to stop writing. For Kate, it's really important to just generate the content and get it published. Writing is a lot of work, but working for Entrepreneur.com, Kate has a great editor that helps her out. Most of the time she wants to get an article out before noon. For longer stories, it's less of a direct deadline, but if you are working on articles everyday, you get used to a rhythm that works best for you. Writing once a month or once a week is fine, but you have to be honest with yourself. If you say you are going to write once a month because that's all the time you have, and you miss a month, you really have to get into a routine and make sure you commit. If you are writing once a month, don't skip. - Kate Taylor Kate says a big debate as to how long an article should be. She thinks that shorter articles may be more likely to go viral, but also there are longer articles that Kate put a lot of time and energy in that have a longer shelf life. She recommends that you need to balance the two and figure out what you're voice is when creating content. Kate says that developing a voice is as much as developing confidence and like many other things, it comes with practice. Kate found her voice through trial and error and writing a lot of articles. Getting your own voice is an extension of expressing your personality. This is easier to do when you are writing about topics that you are more interested in. 3 Things That Will Make You a Better Writer The first thing to becoming a better writer is that when you are choosing a topic, write about personal experiences and make sure it's interesting to you. The second thing is just making sure that there aren't any grammatical errors and finally, learn how to make your articles something that your audience wants to read. It has to do a lot with creating a great headline. Make sure you title your article or story with a "clickable" headline. In other words, find out different ways to express yourself and get your point across quickly. To make headlines better, you can start off with trial and error in figuring out what works with different audiences. Reread your article and try to find out what the article is about. If you are writing about someone, it's a good idea to go back through the article and find something interesting they said and use that as a headline.
