Our guest today is California cool designer Kate Lester of Kate Lester Interiors. Her spaces are infused with an airy, coastal vibe and her style embodies easy living. We ask her about incorporating coastal elements into homes not near the water, how to start a room, and more. What You'll Hear on This Episode: How Kate infuses a clients' personality into their home We talk about the most important design elements including linens, natural light, windows, and the importance of thinking outside the box in decorating Why you should follow the architecture of the house during the decorating process How to increase natural light in a home along with different window treatments. Why Kate loves vintage rugs and how these are a great way to add patterns and color into a home Why having a theme or concept board can help prevent lots of wasted time and money. All about sectionals -- why they're practical and why you should invest here Decorating Dilemma: For Lauren's question around how to frame her art, Kate first wants to address everything else first. Are there any layout issues. Is your floor plan just right. You want to nail the core elements in your room first before deciding on any art or accessories. Your frame choice isn't going to make or break your space. It's far more important that your furniture layout function well for everything you want to accomplish in here. You may want to shift your sofa back from the fireplace a bit and swap your side tables. Your sofa may not be centered on the window anymore, but we think that's fine. Also, in terms of picking frames for your art, all of the frames in a room don't need to match, so pick the frame that best complements the art piece. Also, Lauren we just love what you've done with this space so far. Your console looks great, we love your rug, and you have a solid foundation you've built. Great job! I Heart My Life Show

At I Heart My Life, we witness so many examples of the great things that can come from trusting your instincts. The problem? So many people lack the alignment needed to trust their gut and fully step into their calling. Maybe you feel like you’re meant for something more but can’t quite get the clarity you need. Perhaps you’re feeling stuck or unfulfilled but can’t put your finger on the solution. If so, this is the episode for you. As it turns out, our intuition can guide us to our truest callings and deepest desires. That’s why I’m excited to bring you this episode all about how creating alignment in your physical space can make room for mental, emotional, and spiritual alignment as well. It’s all in the power of Feng Shui. Now, I wasn’t really sure if I was a believer until I sat down with Kate MacKinnon, a certified Feng Shui practitioner. Hearing her story, what she does, and how she uses physical changes in her client’s space to transform their lives totally shifted my perspective. This episode covers the basics of Feng Shui, explaining why you should implement it in your life and how it can open the doors for life-changing transformation. From client success stories to tangible tips for getting aligned in your space (at home or on the road), this episode will have you believing in this powerful practice too. This episode begins with Kate taking us way back, outlining the journey that led her to pursue her passions of Feng Shui full-time (despite a successful corporate career). While this episode offers insight into the power of Feng Shui, it also serves as a reminder of the importance of following your instincts and pursuing your passions. For Kate, that passion was helping others achieve balance and alignment through rearranging their physical space. Follow along as we discuss the principles behind the practice and how our external environments reflect our inner truths. (Is your mind blown yet?). Kate details why Feng Shui works to help her clients (and how it can help you, too). Her services have led to clients landing dream gigs, achieving new levels of wealth, and finding more happiness. You know I’m all about helping you take action and make positive changes in your life. That’s why I ask Kate to share tips for how you can bring Feng Shui to any space you are in, whether it’s at home, work, or on the go. The best part? These tips are pretty simple! As it turns out, small and simple changes can lead to big results. It’s all about creating a space that makes space and energy for you to step into your most authentic self. I’ve always known alignment is vital to long-term success and happiness, and after this conversation, I was so ready to have Kate come into my house and work her Feng Shui magic. Give it a listen, and I’m sure you will be too. In this episode… [02:30] Welcome, Kate! Learn how resilience and desire paved the way toward her success.  [07:19] Why Kate followed her instincts, despite success in the corporate world. [09:29] What finally pushed Kate to step into her passion full-time. [16:59] Kate dives into Feng Shui (and why it’s important to your wellbeing). [20:01] Learn more about how Kate uses Feng Shui to help her clients. [22:24] Hear some of Kate’s Feng Shui success stories (and why it works). [26:32] The power of giving yourself permission. [28:18] How to bring Feng Shui wherever you go. [32:08] Tips for implementing Feng Shui in your space to create alignment. [35:27] How the I Heart My Life Mastermind has transformed Kate’s business. [40:50] Kate’s advice for living a life better than your dreams. Quotes: “It’s important [to remember] how instinctual we are and how that can actually lead us in the direction we're meant to go.” -Emily Williams “Our homes actually reflect the choices we make. Our homes are a map of who we are. The choices we make in our external environment actually reflect what's going on internally.”  -Kate MacKinnon “I think it's really important to follow what feels right for you. When I'm working with people, I give guidelines. I don't always say, ‘Do this exact thing, and it has to look this way,’ because I really believe people know. So it’s about creating that space because it feels good.” -Kate MacKinnon “Sometimes we're scared, and we think fear is the reason why we shouldn't do it. I've learned in my own experience that fear is a reason why I should do it because it's the thing that I really want.” -Kate MacKinnon “Desire is just leading us towards more life.” -Emily Williams Links & Resources: Follow the Podcast: I Heart My Life Show on Apple Podcasts I Heart My Life Show on Spotify Connect with Kate: Kate’s website Kate on Instagram Kate on Twitter Connect with Emily: I Heart My Life Website I Heart My Life on Instagram I Heart My Life on Facebook I Heart My Life on LinkedIn Email: info@iheartmylife.com Book a Call Episode Sponsor: I Heart My Life Mastermind

Kate MacKinnon, Certified Feng Shui Practitioner, combines the eastern practice of Feng Shui with a western aesthetic to create spaces of elegance and beauty that also transform lives. Prior to becoming a Feng Shui Expert, Kate had her own management technology consulting business and was a Vice President for a large Fortune 100 financial services corporation. It was while she was in Hong Kong on a business trip at the end of 1999 that she discovered Feng Shui, or she would say, Feng Shui discovered her. She returned home and in 2000 became trained in the school of Feng Shui as taught by Professor Lin Yun. Since 2001, Kate has successfully consulted for businesses and individuals, bringing the power and magic of Feng Shui to homes, offices, buildings, and land – all over the country and, most recently, all over the world. Kate has also taught courses on Feng Shui at places such as the Hospital for Special Surgery, written several articles on Feng Shui, and been interviewed by thought leaders in the worlds of Speaking, Art, Spirituality, Women Empowerment, and Life Transitions, particularly transitioning from Corporate to being a Creative Entrepreneur. She has also presented workshops as part of other programs. In 2014 Kate taught the first Feng Shui online course for the Integrative Institute of Nutrition with a particular focus on Health & Wellness. In 2016 Kate had the honor to present “Feng Shui 101” to the Global Real Estate Women's Group at JPMorgan Chase. What you will learn in this episode: How Kate's career path led her to her role as VP at JP Morgan Chase before she transitioned to her current work as a Feng Shui practitioner and mentor to other women What the ancient art of Feng Shui is and how its principles help to create harmony in people's environments and transformation in their lives Why Kate has always felt strongly about supporting other women throughout her career, and how her Fung Shui work naturally led to mentoring other women How Kate's work with Fung Shui and energy flow directly has a transformational effect in many aspects of her clients' lives How people's individual spaces often reflect internal issues and blocks they are dealing with, and how adjusting their environment can help correct these issues Kate shares a story of how she helped a business client find success and breakthrough business challenges in his real estate business after the 2008 crash found him stuck Why Kate's work involves recognizing issues in both the space she is working in and the people who inhabit the space What personal transformation Kate has experienced since she began her work with Feng Shui and energy flow What obstacles Kate faces in her business and in bringing Feng Shui principles to people's lives, and how she works to overcome those challenges Why social media has evolved and changed from an intimate conversation to a noisy and often negative space Resources: Website: www.kate-mackinnon.com Facebook: www.facebook.com/kate.mackinnon.940 LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/kate-mackinnon-a7635251/ Twitter: @fengshuikate Additional Resources: Website: sharonspano.com Book: thetimemoneybook.com Ev

Thanks for joining another episode of Dropset Gorgeous Radio! Today’s episode is all about CHANGE. For most people, the uncertainty that comes with change can be unsettling and scary. Kate Schutt is a change coach and she’s here today to share some valuable insight that makes change a little less daunting and explains how to face changes in your life head on, whether you feel 100% ready or not!       Why Kate calls herself a change coach instead of a life coach Common roadblocks people experience that prevent change from happening   Ways to find flexibility and work with the change that’s already working     How Kate processed her biggest change involving the loss of her mother Why you should encourage yourself to be a beginner and not compare yourself to others How to manage change by learning new things and chunking it into smaller steps The importance of letting go of self-limiting beliefs and negativity     Kate Schutt understands what it means to play hard, work hard, and overcome changes that are hard. After being a division one athlete in college, she made a natural transition from athlete to change coach when she realized how much she enjoys helping others. As someone who has experienced a significant loss in her life, she understands change can be difficult but believes it’s possible for everyone. She works to show others where change is working for them and how to use it to create even more change in their lives!       Powerful Quotes to Remember: Look for where change is already easy in your life and bring it over to the area where change is blocked. If you don’t take care of yourself, you can’t take care of anybody else. Life IS change; nothing stays the same. If you can get through another day, the next day will be one more day you’re closer to something being different.     Don’t compare your Chapter 1 to someone’s Chapter 20. Have a beginner’s mindset. Sometimes something so simple can have a significant impact if you just allow yourself to be okay with being bad at it. Hobbies matter! Find something you live and do it for the simple fact you love doing it.       Connect with Kate: Kate's Website Kate's Coaching Website Kate's Instagram Kate's Twitter Kate's Facebook Kate's LinkedIn Listen to Kate's Music "Take Everything" "Blackout" "Glamorous Life" -- a Sheila E cover just because it's fun to cover Sheila E! It s ingrained in our culture to fix things, to try to make everyone happy and see smiles on the faces of everyone around us. But life just isn t that way all the time. In fact, life can often become very dark. Kate Merrick knows that fact all too well. At 8 ½ years old her daughter Daisy passed from this life after a prolonged fight with cancer. Cancer. In a child. Can you imagine? But Kate says she s come to the place where she laughs without fear of the future even though for a very long season during her darkest days of bitterness and grief, she couldn t laugh at all and had plenty of fear. It’s an amazing story and Kate is an inspiring woman. You ll be touched deeply by hearing her story. We are just practicing, we don t have to get it all right. One thing Kate knows from her experience of grief is that there isn t a right way to do it. It s as different as the person who is experiencing it. So when it comes to grief, we need to be careful that we allow ourselves to grieve and that we do it in a way that is honest to us. Kate says, We are just practicing, we don t have to get it all right. That applies to our times of grief as much as it applies to anything else. The honesty with which Kate shares in this episode is both startling and refreshing. She s comfortable with the darkness and struggle she had to go through to grieve over her dearly loved daughter, and she s comfortable with the fact that the sorrow over her loss will always be present. But she s come out unafraid. She s come out able to laugh again. The only way to be comfortable with someone s grief is to be uncomfortable along with them. Grief is one of those things that makes us all uncomfortable. We understand it. We know it has to happen and want others to be able to process it – but not around us. It s too uncomfortable. But it’s also uncomfortable for the one who’s experiencing it. Kate Merrick says that while she was loved very well as she traversed the darkest season of her life after her daughter died, she also grew weary of the discomfort others had about her grief. They didn t say it. But she could see it. And she felt it deep in her own soul, too. Kate has some powerful advice for friends of friends who are suffering through the pangs of grief. Please, listen to this episode to hear what she says. It will serve you and those you love well. Learning to walk through suffering through the gift of writing. Kate s family is the epitome of unplugged. They don t own a TV (never have) and only Kate has a smartphone. They simply don t want the constant barrage of communication and media in their lives, and they ve loved the disconnected pace of life that decision has made possible. But after her daughter, Daisy was diagnosed with cancer, being connected became very much a necessity for Kate. She simply didn t want to have to recount every doctor s visit, every diagnosis, every procedure, to every person who asked – so she started a blog. She didn t even know how it worked, she just typed – often while lying in bed, with one hand, on her phone. And she discovered that writing was a creative gift she d not discovered up until that point – and though it served others by keeping them updated on Daisy s progress, it also served Kate by helping her navigate her own thoughts and feelings. If you ll take the time to hear her story, you ll understand why her story is your story, only the characters are different. After the grief, she laughs without fear of the future. But she couldn t have apart from the grief. None of us want to experience the deep grief of losing a child, or spouse, or person close to us. But it s likely going to happen at least one time in our lives. The loss of her 8 ½ year old daughter was tragic, yet it brought a newfound radiance to Kate s world that was quite unexpected. She says after coming out of the darkness of bitterness and grief, the beauty of the world is brighter, the colors more vivid, the lines are sharper and more defined. And laughter is richer, more filled with joy than before. If all of that sounds strange to you, it s a sign you should hear Kate s entire story. What she s been through provides the context and contrast that makes sense of such unbelievable statements. This conversation is a treasure. Be sure to listen. Session 20 In today's episode, Ryan talks with Kate, a 56-year old 3rd year medical student at West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine as she  shares with us her path to becoming a physician. Kate was initially a bio premed major until she decided to stop and pursue a career as a nurse until changing careers to becoming a nurse midwife and doing another career change into finally becoming a physician. Kate is definitely proof that anything is possible. Anyone can get into medical school. You just need to put in the work and you'll get there. Listen in to Kate’s amazing journey! Here are the highlights of the conversation with Kate: Kate's path to becoming a physician: Decided to become a doctor when she was 10 Interest in rural family practice growing up in rural locations for the  most part of her life Initially a biology premed major until midway through college Transferred to a nursing program in her junior year Working as a nurse midwife for 13 years prior to medical school Switching from being a nurse to a nurse midwife and a teacher in nursing Deciding to go back to medical school at the age of 50 Why Kate decided to stop being premed the first time: Medical school as having a cutthroat environment Finding the length of education to be overwhelming Found interest in what the nurses are doing and wanting immediate gratification The thought of raising kids Lack of research into the whole thing when she made her decision The driving force that made her decide to get into medical school: Being involved in her local community and seeing the need for primary care Seeing physicians as a really huge instrument for change especially in the effective organization around  public health issues Thirst for knowledge and wanting to become a "change" agent Resources she tapped into initially: Kate googled "old premedical students" which led her to OldPreMeds.org Knowing what prerequisites were needed Her family physicians Taking her postbac program: Not being able to get to the classes she needed Ended up applying to two schools for a "structured" postbac program Quitting her job to do the program full time Having that fear in terms of finances Getting the finances: Applying to the National Health Service Corps each year and not getting it Applying for loan repayment program as her plan B Considerations for choosing the schools she applied to: Emphasis on rural primary care and global medical outreach Geography (closer to family) Specifically choosing osteopathic medical schools but ended up applying to 6 DO schools and 6 MD schools and getting 6 interviews The interview process: Having a collegiate footing with the interviewer being a nurse educator herself Giving her an edge as a nontraditional old premed having had some experiences The biggest obstacle that she had overcome: Talking herself out of trying Links and Other Resources: West Virginia School of Medicine National Health Service Corps OldPreMeds.org AAMC list of postbac programs If you need any help with the medical school interview, go to medschoolinterviewbook.com.
