In today's episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Kate Merryweather. Kate is a LinkedIn coach, and if you're an executive coach who wants to attract leads without being annoying or salesy—this one's for you. We talk about how Kate went from being behind the scenes as a copywriter to fully booked within a few months of posting regularly on LinkedIn. Her clients started asking, “What exactly are you doing on LinkedIn?” and how that question led her to create a whole new business and identity as a LinkedIn coach. We also chat about what's working right now on LinkedIn—posting frequency, selfies, warm DMs vs spammy ones, and why connection requests don't need a message anymore. Kate explains how to use personality and “essence of you” in your content, and gives a simple, practical framework to come up with a month's worth of posts. In this episode, we cover: ✅ Why LinkedIn is the place to be—“because that's where the money is”✅ How to attract leads without cold outreach or spammy messages✅ Building likability and trust through content✅ The difference between warm DMs and annoying ones✅ How to brainstorm post ideas using “I don't know,” “I want,” and “I'm afraid”✅ Why selfies can boost your reach (even if you feel scruffy)✅ Posting tips—how often, what kind of content, and when to sprint✅ Whether to bother with hashtags, notes in connection requests, or links in posts ✅ Kate's favourite offer: the Show Up School membership Kate also shares her approach to experimenting on LinkedIn (like posting twice a day!) and how she helps people show up with confidence, even if they're feeling scruffy and a bit over it. Hope: The Anchor for Our Souls

Myrtle House Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 1, 2024 49:45

This past Sunday, we gathered to celebrate the first Sunday of Advent by reflecting on hope—a central theme of our faith and a profound reminder of God's promises to us. With voices from across our church sharing what hope means to them and how it is shaping their lives, it was an uplifting and inspiring time of worship and reflection. Advent is a season of anticipation and expectation, and it was fitting to start by focusing on hope: the confident and assured expectation that we will receive all that God has promised. Biblical Hope: Firm and Secure The Bible reminds us that hope is not a faint wish or fleeting feeling but a firm and secure anchor for the soul: Hebrews 6:19 describes the believer's hope as strong, steadfast, and unshakable. Psalm 71:5-6 speaks of a lifelong reliance on God as our source of hope: “O Lord, you alone are my hope. I've trusted you, O Lord, from childhood. Yes, you have been with me from birth; from my mother's womb you have cared for me.” As followers of Christ, our hope is grounded in God's character and promises. It is not rooted in circumstances but in the unchanging faithfulness of God. Faith, Hope, and Love We also reflected on 1 Corinthians 13, which highlights faith, hope, and love. Love is the greatest because it is eternal. One day, in the presence of God, we will no longer need faith to trust in an unseen God or hope to anticipate His return—we will see Him face to face. But for now, hope sustains us in the waiting. As Billy Graham said: "For the believer, there is hope beyond the grave because Jesus Christ has opened the door to heaven for us by His death and resurrection." Hope in Action: What We Heard Throughout the morning, different voices shared what hope means to them: Kinley: Drawing from Romans 8:23-25, Kinley reminded us that even in our groaning and suffering, we are given hope. It's a hope that strengthens us, sets us free, and lifts us back up when life feels overwhelming. This is a hope worth enjoying and letting rise up within us, giving us the courage to persevere. Emma: Emma spoke about the reality of our world today—so many people are living not without purpose but without hope. It's not that they are hopeless people but that they don't know where hope is found. As followers of Christ, we are called to be messengers of hope, pointing people to God, the ultimate source of hope. Steffan: Steffan encouraged us to actively spread hope by listening, helping, and sharing the generous grace of God. He highlighted 2 Corinthians 8:9, which reminds us of the sacrifice Jesus made so that we might be rich in His grace. Kate: Kate shared from Jeremiah 29:11-14, a powerful reminder that God's plans for us are good, to give us a future and a hope. She spoke about how many people are living with a deep longing for something more—a longing that can only be fulfilled by God. Kate reminded us that God not only wants to bring healing to us but also wants to use us to inspire hope in our community. As believers, we are called to live with hope and bring that hope to those around us, sharing God's promises and pointing others toward His love. Living with Hope This Advent Advent is a season of waiting, but it is also a season of hope. As we look ahead to Christmas and reflect on the birth of Jesus, we are reminded that He is the ultimate fulfillment of hope—a Savior who came to rescue, redeem, and restore us. This week, let's carry the hope we've received into our everyday lives: Be a messenger of hope to those who don't know where to find it. Let hope rise within you, giving you strength to persevere through trials. Look to God's promises as your anchor, firm and secure. As we light the Advent candle of hope, may we be reminded that God's hope never fades. He has called us to be His light in the darkness, sharing the truth that hope is alive in Jesus Christ. “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” – Romans 15:13

This episode was originally released in October of 2021 and I'm re-releasing it for the New Year because it's SO good & I don't want new listeneres to miss out! Feeling burnt out? If you're looking for more balance, this episode with my good friend Kate Kordsmeier is for you. Kate has done an INCREDIBLE job building a multi-six-figure business with blogging and passive income so she can open up time and space to be with her family. She now teaches other entrepreneurs how to do the same! There are so many roles we fill every day; mother, daughter, employee, business owner, team leader, but all those roles can leave us feeling depleted if we don't balance it out with self-care. Kate walks the walk, she is unapologetic about wanting to be financially successful with her business, while also prioritizing her mental health. One thing we really dig into is the myth of "work-life balance"...Work is a PART of life. It's only when you look at your life as a holistic picture that is constantly ebbing and flowing that you can surrender to the flow and build a life AND business that are fulfilling. A life you are happy to show up for every day. We also talk about mom guilt, and why some mothers are not starting their businesses because they feel guilty about taking time away from their family- something I really want to learn more about so I can support this community better (even though I don't yet have kids myself). Kate is a writer, educator, and creative entrepreneur. She lives in Atlanta, Georgia with her husband, Matt, their two kiddos, Jackson and Gemma, and 3 fur babies, Scout, Boo, and Finch (yes, like the book!). Kate left her flourishing journalism career (her byline has appeared in over 125 magazines) to start a holistic wellness blog, Root + Revel, which became a multi-six-figure business! She took what she learned and now teaches other heart-centered online entrepreneurs to create a purposeful and profitable online business. I hope you love listening to this episode as much as I loved having it! Just a friendly reminder, SEO, blogging, writing, and creating passive incomes are all learnable skills, and my DMs and Kate's DMs are open! Do not be afraid to create the content because you are scared of doing it “wrong”. As Kate said, action is the only way to get clarity! Have you ever felt misunderstood?  Today's guest, Kate, is a perfect example of blazing your own path in a world that often feels cookie cutter or one size fits all. From a young age, Kate noticed that she was different from other people in the fact that she feels so deeply, and longs for intentional connection with people around her. Instead of shying away from traits that made her unique, Kate leaned into self-awareness and acceptance through her journey of counseling and communication. Kate's longing for connection only grew stronger as she got older, although  as she progressed through school and finding her  career she still seemed to feel that something was missing. She recognized that the “shoulds” that she had been following, were not fulfilling her desire to live a full and connected life. Kate moved to the Dominican Republic and fell in love with the culture, and the connection of the local people who live there. She started her own business helping introduce other people to that same true connection, gratefulness, and happiness. In this episode, I have the pleasure of interviewing my beautiful friend, Kate Vitela. Kate is a mental health professional, a sober badass, and a fashion editor for The Sober Curator. Her column, Walk Your Talk, is entertaining, inspiring, and absolutely fabulous. More about Kate: Kate has been an RN in the Pacific Northwest for over 20 years. After getting sober she shifted her nursing career towards mental health and dug in hard into the recovery space. Kate gets creative every morning curating a look from her “cloffice” that says capable, confident, and stylish AF.  She converted an extra bedroom in her home into an oversized closet because she wanted a space for all things fabulous. This includes an impressive perfume collection, boxes of jewelry and accessories, shoes, hats, and clothing sectioned off by occasion. After getting sober Kate examined the real reasons she was drawn to the nightlife. She realized it was to see and be seen. She wants other women and men to cultivate a sense of style or maintain a love for fashion while rocking the look in sober spaces. Her mission was to prove to herself that sobriety could be so much more stylish than drunk.Ways to connect with Kate:Instagram: @katevitelaPinterest: @SoberFashionistaWalk Your Talk Column: https://thesobercurator.com/category/sober-lifestyle/walk-your-talk/To donate and/or learn more about the show head to: www.decidedlydry.com If you enjoy the show, please subscribe, leave a 5-star review, and tell your friends about Decidedly Dry. Support the show

Welcome back to the Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast, for Brain Fact Friday, episode #140 and our first Livestream event. I'm Andrea Samadi, author and educator from Toronto, Canada, now living in the United States, (but broadcasting this livestream from my balcony in HI with my co-host Katherine Alexander-Dobrovolskia who is joining us from London, United Kingdom) and like many of our listeners, we have both been fascinated with learning and understanding the science behind high performance strategies in our schools, sports, and the workplace. If you have been listening to our podcast, you will know that we've uncovered that if we want to improve our social and emotional skills, and experience success in our work and personal lives, it all begins with an understanding of our brain. For our FIRST Livestream event, I've invited my colleague, and good friend Katherine Alexander- Dobrovolskaia, the owner of Talent Investors, who is joining us from London, United Kingdom. Welcome Kate, thank you for coming on my first Live event. You know why I asked you to be here today, right? Kate: give me a guess…maybe something about the fact we are broadcasting from Hawaii…maybe because we've been friends for almost 10 years, meeting in John Assaraf's forum, and now taking our Neurocoaching Certification together? You tell me…. Andrea: Kate, since June is the anniversary of when we launched this podcast (June 2019) and now that we are going into our third year of creating bi-weekly episodes, approaching 100K downloads, reaching over 143 countries, I wanted to do something different.  Then add to the mix that this month I hit that mile marker of turning 50, I knew it was time to shake things up. And you've always had an eye for innovation with the work you did with your Best Boss Series[i]. When you did that series, interviewing innovators in business, what do you think stuck out with leaders who rose to the top? What kinds of things did you notice they were doing differently from the rest? Kate: Answer about what you learned from your Best Boss Series. Andrea: Well, since this is Brain Fact Friday, I did want to share something we've recently learned from our Neuroscience coaching training that we are doing together, and invite the listeners to ask questions in the chat. Anything you'd like to know after listening to this podcast if you have been following us, from how we launched, to secrets of inviting such high-quality guests. What do you want to know? I'll let Kate answer the questions, and I'll sit back and relax on my balcony. Q1: Andrea to Kate: Kate, what would you say is something you have learned recently about the brain, as it has applied to your personal and professional life? Kate: Answer…something about the brain that's helped you personally/professionally? What about you, Andrea? What's something important that sticks out for you? Andrea: It was probably from episode #100 with Mary Helen Immordino-Yang “We feel, therefore we learn” and the idea that when we connect emotions to learning, what we are studying goes into long-term memory. This brings in Friederike Fabritius' How the Brain Learns book and her work with peak performance with the idea that we must have FUN with our work to hit those highest levels of peak performance and productivity. Andrea: What about the listeners? Let me know if you have learned anything from this podcast, or any other area about the brain, and how you've used these ideas for improved results? Answer anything that comes in on the chat…. Q2: Andrea to Kate: I've known you for some time now, I think we were accountability partners at one point in time, helping each other stay on track with the projects we were working on. And then life hits, and you've had some extremely difficult times, in addition to the Pandemic. How have you been able to stay on track with life, positivity and look after everything that's going on personally for you if you want to share what's happened in your personal life that's really knocked things off course for you? How are you working with the fears that you have around everything you are dealing with? Kate: How about you, Andrea? Andrea: During difficult times, I've usually found that sticking to routine has helped. Probably because the brain like predictability and doesn't like change, so keeping a daily routine that starts with consistent sleep/wake times has been a good starting point. Then building everything else around that. I had no idea that research has shown that this consistent sleep/wake time is an important marker for productivity (from the interview with Kristen Holmes) from Whoop.com, so much so, that when you wear the Whoop device, it tells you how consistent you are with your sleep/wake times and this can help your health in ways that research is just discovering to be beneficial. I haven't had anything as difficult as you have had to deal with, but I am sure our listeners have. But for those BIG fears…like fear of someone close to you with health problems, I have found Dr. Carolyn Leif's work to be helpful. I did a podcast on her newest book, Cleaning Up Your Mental Mess: 5 Simple Scientifically Proven Steps to Reduce Stress, Anxiety and Toxic Thinking[ii] Andrea: For our listeners?  What have you been doing to stay productive during difficult times? Q3: Andrea to Kate: Kate, I shared with you that an area that I know we could improve on in my household (other than sleep which is so easy to master in HI—I've had perfect sleep scores this week because there's no agenda or time pressure on vacation) but other than this area, it would be our meals. With the fact that we all have different schedules (the girls train at the gym every night during the school year, so it's not like we can sit down as a family like my parents did with us growing up) so my dinner is usually at my desk while I'm working and if my husband is home, we will eat together, but it's not always this simple. So, you sent me an incredible cook book that we can use to try some new recipes together. Can you share how cooking as a family has helped you? Kate: answers how cooking as a family has helped them to stay closer. Andrea: How about our listeners? What have you been doing to stay healthy with meals? Or sleep? Since we can't be on vacation all the time and depending on where you live, it might be difficult to still shop for groceries. My Mom told me they just started to open up shopping in Toronto, but before that, I was shipping her items from Amazon that she couldn't get locally. Q4: Andrea to Kate: I know you are a reader, and you always keep me up to date with books that you have been learning from. What books have you been reading this year? Kate: What about you, Andrea, what books are you reading? Andrea: I've always got the book of the next person I'm interviewing on my phone, and love this part of the podcast. Where else in the world do you get to read someone's book and then email them and say “hey, can I pick your brain on your book?” and they say sure, and you get to dive deeper into what they have written, and share it? This is the part of the podcast that amazes me every day. I've got to mention Mandy Krueckebrg Lengrich, a longtime listener of the podcast, who has sent me at least 10 books to read/research. I want to spend some time with these books that she is picking up from her studies in the field of educational neuroscience. (Gabor Mate, Nicole Tetreault/Seth Perler) and her most recent referral of the book Into the Magic Shop by James R Doty, M.D. I've also been fascinated with Dr. Bruce Perry's work, (he's just released a book with Oprah and my friends stop me on the hiking trails saying…you need to interview Dr. Perry). Episode #53 “Self-Regulation and Your Brain: How to Bounce Back Towards Resiliency” was inspired by his recent webinar series. I asked him to be a guest on the podcast last June 2020 and he was in the middle of writing his book “What Happened to You” with Oprah, and he told me to contact him when he's finished the book. A year later, his book is out, and I feel like a stalker, but I don't want to miss an opportunity like that, so I contacted him again, and we are working on getting him on the schedule for October, so this book is always open on my phone. I've also got a fun interview coming in August with Mike Rousell on how surprise impacts the brain. Who doesn't like surprises? His book comes out in September, so the interview will be released right before this book,  Andrea: What books are our listeners reading? Q5: Andrea to Kate: You've known me for a while, and I know you love to push me beyond my limits, which I love.  We can all use a friend who doesn't let you get comfortable. If you look at the speakers I've had on the podcast, who would you like to see me interview next? Give me a list of some people. Andrea: to listeners: who would the listeners like to hear on the podcast next? Send me some ideas. I Heart My Life Show

At I Heart My Life, we witness so many examples of the great things that can come from trusting your instincts. The problem? So many people lack the alignment needed to trust their gut and fully step into their calling. Maybe you feel like you’re meant for something more but can’t quite get the clarity you need. Perhaps you’re feeling stuck or unfulfilled but can’t put your finger on the solution. If so, this is the episode for you. As it turns out, our intuition can guide us to our truest callings and deepest desires. That’s why I’m excited to bring you this episode all about how creating alignment in your physical space can make room for mental, emotional, and spiritual alignment as well. It’s all in the power of Feng Shui. Now, I wasn’t really sure if I was a believer until I sat down with Kate MacKinnon, a certified Feng Shui practitioner. Hearing her story, what she does, and how she uses physical changes in her client’s space to transform their lives totally shifted my perspective. This episode covers the basics of Feng Shui, explaining why you should implement it in your life and how it can open the doors for life-changing transformation. From client success stories to tangible tips for getting aligned in your space (at home or on the road), this episode will have you believing in this powerful practice too. This episode begins with Kate taking us way back, outlining the journey that led her to pursue her passions of Feng Shui full-time (despite a successful corporate career). While this episode offers insight into the power of Feng Shui, it also serves as a reminder of the importance of following your instincts and pursuing your passions. For Kate, that passion was helping others achieve balance and alignment through rearranging their physical space. Follow along as we discuss the principles behind the practice and how our external environments reflect our inner truths. (Is your mind blown yet?). Kate details why Feng Shui works to help her clients (and how it can help you, too). Her services have led to clients landing dream gigs, achieving new levels of wealth, and finding more happiness. You know I’m all about helping you take action and make positive changes in your life. That’s why I ask Kate to share tips for how you can bring Feng Shui to any space you are in, whether it’s at home, work, or on the go. The best part? These tips are pretty simple! As it turns out, small and simple changes can lead to big results. It’s all about creating a space that makes space and energy for you to step into your most authentic self. I’ve always known alignment is vital to long-term success and happiness, and after this conversation, I was so ready to have Kate come into my house and work her Feng Shui magic. Give it a listen, and I’m sure you will be too. In this episode… [02:30] Welcome, Kate! Learn how resilience and desire paved the way toward her success.  [07:19] Why Kate followed her instincts, despite success in the corporate world. [09:29] What finally pushed Kate to step into her passion full-time. [16:59] Kate dives into Feng Shui (and why it’s important to your wellbeing). [20:01] Learn more about how Kate uses Feng Shui to help her clients. [22:24] Hear some of Kate’s Feng Shui success stories (and why it works). [26:32] The power of giving yourself permission. [28:18] How to bring Feng Shui wherever you go. [32:08] Tips for implementing Feng Shui in your space to create alignment. [35:27] How the I Heart My Life Mastermind has transformed Kate’s business. [40:50] Kate’s advice for living a life better than your dreams. Quotes: “It’s important [to remember] how instinctual we are and how that can actually lead us in the direction we're meant to go.” -Emily Williams “Our homes actually reflect the choices we make. Our homes are a map of who we are. The choices we make in our external environment actually reflect what's going on internally.”  -Kate MacKinnon “I think it's really important to follow what feels right for you. When I'm working with people, I give guidelines. I don't always say, ‘Do this exact thing, and it has to look this way,’ because I really believe people know. So it’s about creating that space because it feels good.” -Kate MacKinnon “Sometimes we're scared, and we think fear is the reason why we shouldn't do it. I've learned in my own experience that fear is a reason why I should do it because it's the thing that I really want.” -Kate MacKinnon “Desire is just leading us towards more life.” -Emily Williams Links & Resources: Follow the Podcast: I Heart My Life Show on Apple Podcasts I Heart My Life Show on Spotify Connect with Kate: Kate’s website Kate on Instagram Kate on Twitter Connect with Emily: I Heart My Life Website I Heart My Life on Instagram I Heart My Life on Facebook I Heart My Life on LinkedIn Email: info@iheartmylife.com Book a Call Episode Sponsor: I Heart My Life Mastermind

kate.'s guitarist reached out to me last year to play a show with them, which I found to be a little odd because they seemed to be so pop. What would they want to do with weird old me?! As I started to meet and talk with everyone involved with project, I realized that we have similar attitudes to making music - saying what you need to say, being alternative about your approach, and ignoring the system. I've always been hella intrigued that they've been helming that way of making music in such a rules-oriented genre, and so I've been waiting for the day to have this convo for a while! I love kate.'s music and Kate is a NUTS singer. ENJOY.

How Do We Cling to Hope in the Midst of Tragedy? What is God doing in our lives when we experience suffering? How do we enter into one another's suffering well? When we face tragedy how do we keep our hearts open to hope? On today’s show, I have invited Kate Elizabeth Clark, author of the book, Where I End: A Story of Tragedy, Truth and Rebellious Hope.  In 2009, Kate Clark was a wife and active mother of two living in Michigan when a tragic playground accident left her paralyzed from the neck down. After surgery for her injured spine, she was told that she would likely never walk again. Facing the possibility of a life without being able to hug her children, walk independently, or hold her husband’s hand, Kate prayed a prayer of rebellious hope and asked God for a miracle. Today Kate will share her story hope, grief, suffering and miraculous recovery. Her story is a testimony that God is with us and faithful even in difficult circumstances. A little bit about Kate: Kate studied at the University of Michigan, Wayne State University, and Dallas Theological Seminary. With a background in psychology. She has spent much of the last twenty years working and writing for a nationwide Christian radio and counseling ministry. When she’s not writing, Kate enjoys spending time outdoors, cooking new recipes with her kids, and immersing herself in books. Kate, her husband John and their 2 kids. live in Wheaton, IL. Session 20 In today's episode, Ryan talks with Kate, a 56-year old 3rd year medical student at West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine as she  shares with us her path to becoming a physician. Kate was initially a bio premed major until she decided to stop and pursue a career as a nurse until changing careers to becoming a nurse midwife and doing another career change into finally becoming a physician. Kate is definitely proof that anything is possible. Anyone can get into medical school. You just need to put in the work and you'll get there. Listen in to Kate’s amazing journey! Here are the highlights of the conversation with Kate: Kate's path to becoming a physician: Decided to become a doctor when she was 10 Interest in rural family practice growing up in rural locations for the  most part of her life Initially a biology premed major until midway through college Transferred to a nursing program in her junior year Working as a nurse midwife for 13 years prior to medical school Switching from being a nurse to a nurse midwife and a teacher in nursing Deciding to go back to medical school at the age of 50 Why Kate decided to stop being premed the first time: Medical school as having a cutthroat environment Finding the length of education to be overwhelming Found interest in what the nurses are doing and wanting immediate gratification The thought of raising kids Lack of research into the whole thing when she made her decision The driving force that made her decide to get into medical school: Being involved in her local community and seeing the need for primary care Seeing physicians as a really huge instrument for change especially in the effective organization around  public health issues Thirst for knowledge and wanting to become a "change" agent Resources she tapped into initially: Kate googled "old premedical students" which led her to OldPreMeds.org Knowing what prerequisites were needed Her family physicians Taking her postbac program: Not being able to get to the classes she needed Ended up applying to two schools for a "structured" postbac program Quitting her job to do the program full time Having that fear in terms of finances Getting the finances: Applying to the National Health Service Corps each year and not getting it Applying for loan repayment program as her plan B Considerations for choosing the schools she applied to: Emphasis on rural primary care and global medical outreach Geography (closer to family) Specifically choosing osteopathic medical schools but ended up applying to 6 DO schools and 6 MD schools and getting 6 interviews The interview process: Having a collegiate footing with the interviewer being a nurse educator herself Giving her an edge as a nontraditional old premed having had some experiences The biggest obstacle that she had overcome: Talking herself out of trying Links and Other Resources: West Virginia School of Medicine National Health Service Corps OldPreMeds.org AAMC list of postbac programs If you need any help with the medical school interview, go to medschoolinterviewbook.com.

As a child I followed physical world teachings and suppressed my angelic connection. As a teen, I quietly questioned the teachings of my family's Southern Baptist religion. Through a telepathic connection I had with my maternal grandmother, I knew there had to be more - and I've discovered that there is.For years I struggled, looking for answers. Then my research led me to books by Doreen Virtue, James Van Praagh, John Edward and Sylvia Browne. I tried very hard to connect with the angelic realm and deceased loved ones through meditation, but I kept falling asleep. Then I discovered the meditation that "clicked." I met my spirit guide, Gabrielle and visited with her as often as I could using meditation. Then one day as I was beginning to meditate, I saw a man standing on the edge of the meditation meadow. He wore a long white robe. Next thing I knew he was beside me. It was Jesus..."Find out more about Kate and the amazing heart healing work that she does at her website www.soulkisses.com
