A former Deputy Prime Minister disagrees the role's largely ceremonial. Prime Minister-elect Chris Luxon has confirmed policies have been settled in Coalition talks - and negotiations have turned to ministerial roles. ACT's David Seymour made a public pitch for Deputy, but Luxon has downplayed the role's importance. Sir Don McKinnon was the deputy to Jim Bolger in his National Government, under the single-party system. He says under MMP it can be someone from a different party, but the duties are real. "You're there to do things that your leader, your Prime Minister, doesn't want to do, meet the people he doesn't want to meet, go to the places he doesn't get time to go to." The Global Financial Crisis shattered the economic system. It destroyed communities, lives, businesses and governments, and the effects are still being felt, even today. The result and fallout of the largest global recession since the 1930s was left to governments, ministers and leaders, with some of the biggest decisions the modern world had ever faced needing to be made. The person making those decisions for the Australian people, was then Treasurer Wayne Swan. Wayne served as Treasurer for the Rudd Government from 2007 to 2010, and continued his role, whilst also serving as Deputy Prime Minister under Julia Gillard til 2013. On this week's episode of The Risk Equation, Dr Chris Maguire explores how Wayne made the decisions he did, who gave him the economic guidance to organise and distribute the second biggest stimulus package in the world, and what made the pressures and stresses of the media and the opposition bearable and manageable. Michael is joined by John Anderson AO, Former Deputy Prime Minister of Australia & leader of the National Party from 1999 to 2005, regarding his recent opinion piece in The Australian newspaper where he looks at Black Lives Matter and the roll of the father in the family unit. ‘Black Lives Matters as a movement has played fast and loose with the facts regarding police brutality’, Mr Anderson writes. ‘The Washington Post police killings database shows that African-Americans are far more likely to be killed by other African-Americans and that last year, out of 56 unarmed Americans killed by police officers, 15 were African-Americans.’ ‘Yet could the Black Lives Matter movement have gained such traction if there was nothing at all wrong in the African-American community? It’s doubtful.’ ‘However, merely appealing to racism to explain inequality and high levels of incarceration among African-American men hasn’t proved to be very helpful over the years. In fact, there’s more to the story: it’s a problem with men in general, and African-American men are bearing the brunt of it. The problem is fatherlessness, and it’s increasingly being recognised not only as the greatest problem facing African-Americans, but America itself.’ See omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information.

Super-normal or super-natural, one of Canada's most well-known and beloved politicians has a view you should hear. Fresh off the release of his most recent book, Hope Restored, the highly accomplished Paul Hellyer brings his view of the "New World Order" to Discussions of Truth. After graduating from the University of Toronto in 1949, he was elected to the House of Commons of Canada. Eight years later he became the youngest cabinet minister appointed to Louis S St. Laurent's government. Having held senior posts in both the Lester B Pearson and Pierre E Trudeau government bodies, he was defeated by Trudeau in 1968. The following year, after serving as Senior Minister (now designated as Deputy Prime Minister), Paul resigned from the Trudeau cabinet on question of principle relating to housing. He is the longest current serving member of the Privy Council of Canada...just ahead of Prince Philip. Born in Waterford, Ontario on August 6 (1923), prior to a career in politics, Paul studied aeronautical engineering at Curtiss-Wright Technical Institute in Glendale, California. Hellyer may be best known for unifying the Canadian Armed Forces and the 1968 chairmanship of the Task Force on Housing and Urban Development. He currently focuses on writing, researching and fighting for economic reform. His near life-long career in politics gives him a perspective on world economics which is possibly un-paralleled. September 2005 Hellyer became the first person of cabinet rank in the G8 to state unequivocally: "UFO's are as real as the airplanes flying overhead." What Paul has been exposed to during his more than half-century long career will amaze you. If it doesn't get you calling your local lawmaker or politician, you need to rethink your power of person. YOU CAN DO SOMETHING. DO IT NOW. Be awesome. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/iantrottier/support

Note: This episode was recorded and released before the tragic news broke of the death of Nick Cave's son Arthur. This show is a celebration of Cave's music, but I strongly considered pulling it down after reading the horrible story in various news outlets this morning, and definitely would have if the episode had discussed Cave's family or mentioned his children. It's beyond awful that any parent should have to go through what he's going through. For someone who has brought joy and solace to so many around the world to be struck by such a tragedy seems unbelievably unjust. --- Former Deputy Prime Minister, long-serving parliamentarian and occasional DJ Anthony Albanese MP joins me on the show to talk about his favorite album by one of his favorite artists - “The Good Son” (1990) by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. We talk about the origins of his Nick Cave fandom, seeing him live with the Birthday Party and later with the Bad Seeds, how this album represents a period of Cave in transition, why ‘The Ship Song' ended up on his playlist when he guest hosted Rage and which Nick Cave song got people moving in his recent DJ set. Also, we talk about why his electorate has Australia's best concert venue (the Enmore), the advantages of going to gigs in Canberra, why bad governments breed good music, protest songs and the Reclink Community Cup.
