He co-founds and christens the neo-psychedelic pop group The Teardrop Explodes with Julian Cope but walks out of the band just as they are about to break big and goes to work in a tearoom instead. He then forms The Wild Swans, the indie-band of choice for literary-minded teens in the early 1980s, and Care with Ian Broudie of The Lightning Seeds, sharing a flat with a seventeen-year-old Courtney Love along the way. Marriage, fatherhood, tropical illness, and divorce follow, interspersed with artistic collaborations with Bill Drummond and members of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, among others. Following an onstage reunion with Cope at the Royal Festival Hall, Simpson discovers that seven thousand miles away, in the Philippines, he is considered a musical god. Presidential suites, armed-guards, police escorts you couldn't make it up, and, incredibly, he does' t need to. Revolutionary Spirit is the story of a musician driven by an unerring belief that artistic integrity will bring its own rewards. It concludes with an exorcism of sorts as Simpson finally rids himself of the debilitating demon of psychological depression that has, from the age of nine, run like malware in the background of his life.

In our Mysticast conversation with Ceryn Rowntree (https://www.cerynrowntree.com/) Storyteller, Primal Priestess, Soul Integration Specialist, we were spoilt for choice on what to focus on. Debra was particularly interested in Project Earthwords which Ceryn is a Founder Member, so that is where we started the discussion. Project Earthwork (https://www.projectearthwork.org/)  a totally FREE initiative where folk from all over the world and all walks of life, network together to honour and tend to the living breathing being that is our home. They acknowledge the wisdom of our ancestors, weave energy grids and networks for those to come, and reclaim their rightful place as stewards of the Earth. As the discussion developed we quickly understood how this initiative slotted into Ceryn's other passion which she calls Soul Integration, she helps people understand the vital importance of having the Male and Female energies working together in harmony, how thoughts are powerful tools and correct breathing is the best remedy for calming the mind. The biggest parallel drawn from this exploration was the striking alignment with the Fifth and Seventh Blessing from The Twelve Blessings (https://www.aetherius.org/the-twelve-blessings/) given by The Master Jesus through Dr. King in 1958.  Further study: https://www.cerynrowntree.com/) https://www.aetherius.org/the-mother-earth/#0 - lecture by Lisa Rosser is worth a watch. https://cloud.aetherius.org/the-seventh-blessing/  a transmission given by Master Jesus through Dr. King in 1958. https://cloud.aetherius.org/the-fifth-blessing/  a transmission given by Master Jesus through Dr. King in 1958.

What explains the 11% decline in demand for MGNREGS employment in April?

Business Standard Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 4, 2022 6:32

The unprecedented crisis triggered by the pandemic during the first lockdown in March 2020 had forced more than 10 million migrant workers to return to their villages.   Most of them, unable to find sustenance in agriculture during the lean season, took refuge in MGNREGA schemes. This shot up the demand for the rural job guarantee programme.   MGNREGA guarantees at least 100 days of wage employment in a financial year to every rural household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work.   Provisional data for the month of April indicates a turnaround in the employment situation in rural areas. The number of households seeking work under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) in April was 11.15% lower than the numbers in the same month last year.   Nearly 23.26 million households sought work under the scheme compared to 26.18 million households last year.  As economic activities picked up, workers are once again migrating back to urban areas. However, a disproportionately large number of people are still seeking work under the scheme. In the comparable pre-pandemic months 16-17 million households demanded MGNREGA work. Talking to Business Standard, S Mahendra Dev, Director, Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR) says demand declined partly due to an increase in urban employment. While economic activity has still not caught up to the pre-pandemic level, contact-intensive sectors are recovering to normalcy. Non-form activities in rural areas may have improved, he says curtailing govt expenditure could lead to lesser jobs creation.  Business Standard recently reported that the finance ministry has asked various line ministries and departments responsible for implementing subsidy and welfare schemes to cut wasteful expenditure expeditiously and to plug leakages.   The number of MNREGA beneficiaries rose to around 70 million when the economy slumped during pandemic lockdown, up from 50 million before the lockdown. Policymakers at the centre are reportedly concerned that the figure has not come down to pre-pandemic levels yet. Chakradhar Buddha, a researcher at study group LibTech India, said the work demand data pointed towards the fact that “we haven't come back to pre-pandemic normal economic activities in rural areas”.   An official told Business Standard that departments have been asked to map the most backward districts and compare them with relatively developed ones. “If a developed district in a state has more beneficiaries than an aspirational district, it means there are ghost beneficiaries of welfare schemes,” the official said.   Meanwhile, civil society activists have been pointing out that the money allocated for the programme in the Budget FY23, at Rs 73,000 crore, is inadequate and could lead to demand getting artificially suppressed.   The actual expenditure could be lower because a significant part, almost 20,000 crore rupees, could be spent on clearing the dues of FY22. In FY22, the Centre had budgeted 73,000 crore rupees for MGNREGA but ended up spending almost 98,000 crore rupees. According to Nikhil Dey, Founder Member, Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan (MKSS), demand is a reflection of the amount of money available in the system. The main reason for the fall in demand is the squeezing of funds by Centre, and regardless of economic recovery, there is a huge unmet demand, he says. There are ghost beneficiaries but transparency measures causing confusion on the ground, he says adding that such measures should not lead to suppression of demand.    A host of factors like revival in urban economic activity, cracking down on ghost beneficiaries and rationing of funds by the Centre could have contributed to a fall in MGNREGA demand in April.

Colette Soler, joined by Darian Leader Lacan's work is often caricatured as arcane, convoluted, ‘theoretical' and, above all, difficult. But Lacan himself engaged continually with the ideas of his contemporaries and grounded his work in analytic practice. If you have been put off reading Lacan in the past, here is a chance to see what the fuss is about, in a way that relates directly to clinical work and wider issues of the world we live in. Colette Soler - Psychoanalyst, Founder Member of the Ecole de Psychanalyse des Forums du Champ Lacanien. Her books include What Lacan said about Women (Other Press, 2006) and Lacanian Affects (Routledge, 2014). Darian Leader - British psychoanalyst and author. He is a founding member of the Centre for Freudian Analysis and Research (CFAR), President of the College of Psychoanalysts, a Trustee of the Freud Museum, and Honorary Visiting Professor in Psychoanalysis at Roehampton University. “Do you guys remember Periscope or Meerkat?” today's PYP MVP Lauren Fritsch asked during our conversation. “That was the hottest thing at SXSW a couple of years ago...and where are they now?”   We both chuckled about this.   “The world is changing at an incredible pace,” she continued. “And it's great to be curious and it's great to be an early adopter...but always remember it's far more important to be super clear on why you do what you do so that when that next round of bright shiny objects comes around, you don't get stung.”   Just because everyone else is doing something doesn't mean you have to do it, too.   Lauren and I spoke near the end of last year just as the holidays were upon us. In fact, she was one of the last people I talked to for the show in 2017 and I've been super excited about her episode airing in this newest season of PYP since we talked.   Lauren Fritsch is a speaker, entrepreneur, artist and mom. Her mental model, the Joy|Money Matrix, is a simple tool that empowers creative entrepreneurs to make strategic decisions that prioritize joy and improve revenue simultaneously. She calls the movement the Joy Imperative and it's really cool! Lauren has been an entrepreneur since the age of 23. For most of her career, she ran TCC Consulting Group, a boutique firm that focused on the specific sales and leadership needs of mid-market businesses in the United States. Now she teaches other coaches and consultants how to sell to those mid-market firms in addition to sharing the Joy Imperative. Her life includes more time painting, wife-ing, parenting her magical 3 year old, and supporting the licensees who use her systems. She splits her time between Manhattan and the Hudson Valley but will always be a southerner.   Shownotes PYP on Twitter Become a Founder Member of the PYP Patreon Community

Participating in our own rescue may be a new concept to some of you. I had never heard the concept described until Tommy Breedlove mentioned it in episode #131. Have you ever noticed that you pick up on a phrase from a conversation or from something you read and it stays with you for awhile? I've learned over the years that's usually a clue I need to be paying attention to the message it's sending. And this time is no different. What message do you need to be hearing right now? Today's show may reveal it to you! Connect with PYP on Twitter Become a Founder Member of the PYP Patreon Community
