Episode 336 - Endorphins, Dopamine, Serotonin and Oxytocin   I need to admit myself somewhere.  I could sit here until I'm blue in the face and until I have some humility, this is not going to work.   Today we have Susan, she's 61, she's from Pennsylvania and took her last drink Nov 19th, 2017.  This is her story of living Alcohol Free (AF).    Events!   Due to Covid we had to cancel our Costa Rica sober travel trip, and an event in Denver. Those events are back on. We've got an AF trip to Costa Rica January 15-23rd 2022 that includes:  the cloud forest, the beach, chilling on a catamaran. Registration opens Sept 1 and we've got 33 spots available.  April 14th -17th 2022, we'll be in Denver Colorado at the Hilton Garden Inn at Union Station. This event will be about moving energy with music that is performed LIVE. Expect connection, small group breakout sessions and the opportunity to be your most authentic self. Registration opens Nov 1. You can find more information about our events      Paul's Intro   Today I will share information on the 4 main chemicals we're dealing with when we ditch the booze. I'm outline them, give a framework of how to work with these chemicals in a healthier way and a loose timeline of what to expect when you quit drinking and how these chemicals will come back into balance.     The four main players dance with an addiction are Endorphins, Dopamine, Serotonin and Oxytocin.   Endorphins and dopamine are the chemicals of progress. Short-term feel-good chemicals. And Serotonin and oxytocin are the long-term chemicals.   Let's cover the short-term molecules first: endorphins and dopamine   Endorphins - We often hear the word endorphins with exercise. And it's true. This is the reason for the runners high. Endorphins have one purpose - to mask physical pain. Since the body doesn't distinguish the difference between physical and emotional pain very well, this is why running, or physical movement helps us emotionally when we aren't feeling good.     Dopamine - This is the molecule we are mostly engaged with when dealing with an addiction. This is more accurately described as the learning molecule. Dopamine is viewed as an incentive for progress. The good feeling, we get when we do something necessary for survival. Addictions highjack the dopamine system. Alcohol raises the dopamine in our brains by over 100-200% and cocaine raises it by 300%… temporarily. Then there's a major crash.   Dopamine is highly addictive, and it should be. Human beings walked thousands of miles over the ice shelf of eastern Asia to the Americas because of dopamine.  The dopamine system worked great for humans, until the world modernized faster than the system could adapt.  Alcohol completely over runs this system   Long-term chemicals - These chemicals control our long-term feelings.   Serotonin - The selfless chemical. Oxytocin - The love molecule and the connection molecule.   Let's cover how we can work with these as we ditch the booze and then I'll give you a loose timeline of when these chemicals should start naturally emerging in your system again.   Endorphins - Keep running, keep gardening. This is a much healthier way to override the physical and emotional discomfort of quitting drinking. Also, laugh, laugh, laugh.   Dopamine - It's important we retrain the brain to release dopamine with other activities. Pick a short-term goal. Maybe it's learning the guitar, maybe it's finding a species of bird in the wild, or a snake. Science shows that a spike of dopamine is released when we help other people. Dopamine is a big reason we've done this podcast 336 straight Monday's.   Once we have the dopamine system cued to healthier stimuli then within time serotonin starts to naturally emerge. With this comes a sense of belonging. If we stick with it long enough, oxytocin will emerge on the scene.   The long-term chemicals are contagious. This is why we love inspiring movies that motivate us to perform our own selfless acts. This is why we cheer people on at marathons or say heck yes when we hear someone has hit an AF milestone.   Here's a loose timeline for this:   Endorphins: within the first 24-72 hours. Dopamine: within six months, depending on your habits.  Serotonin: 3-9 months. Oxytocin: 6-12 months.   This is all given that you're doing the work.   PAWS in recovery is post-acute withdrawal symptoms. I like to call them healing symptoms because it's the body, mind, soul, and spirit recalibrating itself without alcohol. Trust the process, stick with it, we got your back.   Let's hear from Betterhelp.  betterhelp.com/ELEVATOR     [13:52] Odette welcomes Susan   Susan's last drink was on November 19, 2017.   She feels great and every year is better.  Susan is 61 and single but was previously married.  She has a daughter and two grandchildren.  She is from Pennsylvania.  She moved to Los Angeles and lived there for thirty years.  She has also lived in Colorado and is now back on the East Coast.  She works for a medical device company.  She loves to read novels, cooking, exercise, the beach, bike riding and TV.    [15:49] Tell us about your history with drinking   Susan described 44 years of drinking.  Her first drink was at age 14 and she would sneak drinks with friends.  In high school she fell in love with the bad boy of the school and did a 360 in one day.  She went from straight A's and first clarinet to a party girl.  After her first pill and sips of beer, her inhibitions disappeared.  She partied like everyone else.  She married this bad boy very young, and they divorced at 21.  She moved to California and got involved with another guy. They drank together with friends.  She remarried and tried to clean up her home and life to have a family.  Giving up weed was easy, but she struggled relinquishing wine.  At 30, she admitted herself to a treatment center called Schick for a weekend and participated in an intensive outpatient program (IOP).  She went to a few AA meetings and was able to stay away from alcohol for four months.  When she returned to drinking, her drinking progressed.  She was raising her daughter, working and what many would describe as a functioning alcoholic.  She drank nightly, but not a lot.  Over the years, she made a few attempts to quit, tried counseling and AA again, but nothing was working.  She decided to accept it for what it was because she didn't have the time to do what you must do to quit.   [21:19] What was the tipping point that made you enter treatment?   Susan's father was an alcoholic, and she watched his drinking become progressive.  She knew it could happen to her and didn't want to become like her father.  The rest of her life was healthy.  She exercised and ate healthy foods and wondered how long she could continue drinking.  She described feeling like two people.  She was Miss Goody Two-Shoes during the day and at night she was drinking.    Susan always had faith and knew that God was protecting her but didn't want to push the limits and hurt others.  It took a while after that realization for her to attempt quitting.  She had some false starts where she would try but wasn't ready.   When her second grandchild was about to arrive, she knew she had to quit because she was fearful her first granddaughter would associate Mima with wine.    She spoke with her therapist and said she felt therapy was not enough and entered an intense outpatient program because she knew until she had some humility, it wouldn't work.   Her IOP was very diverse and encountered many people with several stories.  During IOP she would screw up every week.  She admitted it and, on the 19th, she called her sister (who is in recovery) who calmed her down.  Her sister mailed her a book called Acceptance* and she hasn't had a drink since.  She described her moment of acceptance, surrender and her daily routine of prayer and meditation.  *(https://www.my12stepstore.com/Acceptance-A-Way-to-Serenity.html?gclid=CjwKCAjwi9-HBhACEiwAPzUhHH_MXOMZLl8LTD-oZE98nSxHE2hhktBhXfpmEifPluupg-Mn8uIruxoCJUgQAvD_BwE)   [31:22] What were the first 90 days like?   Susan described having time to focus on herself.  She then took over as the nanny for her grandson and her daughter was able to trust her with the baby.  She gradually returned to work with part-time work.  At a year after she became sober, she returned to corporate America.   It continued to get easier with time.  She enjoyed podcasts.  Her dog had some health issues yet survived for six months.  When he passed, she was tempted to drink, but overcame the temptation.   She tries to mix up her recovery with AA meetings, podcasts, and anything to keep it interesting.  She loves Café RE because it gives her the flexibility of both worlds (AA and podcasts).  She now has a strong desire to help others in recovery.  The peace and freedom that comes with recovery has become the best way for her to live, she can't imagine anything better.   [40:21] What was behind drinking for you?   When looking at fears and resentments, she gained a new perspective.  She realized that something else may have been going on in the moment.  She learned to stop holding bad feelings and looking deep into the causes of certain things.  She uncovers new things regularly.  She is accepting, simplifying, and lowering her expectations.  It took her years not to want more.  She has more work to do and is open to the work.    [40:24] Do you still get cravings?   Susan doesn't get physical cravings but does have memory triggers.  While Christmas shopping last year, the memory of having wine at Christmas came into her head.  She did some thinking, played the tape forward and it passed quickly.  She does have a fear of dating because she has been single through her recovery.  Self-care or “me time” will remain a priority for her to maintain sobriety.    [47:11] What are your rituals in sobriety?   Susan gets up at 5 AM and reads a novel, then does her recovery reading including daily reflections and prayers.  She frequently listens to podcasts.  She watches to Joel Osteen regularly because he gives her hope that there are good people in this insane world.  Susan is a listener in AA meetings, she is an optimist, and she learns from others.  She has become a host for AA meetings and wants to give back.    [52:17] Rapid Fire Round   What is your favorite non-alcoholic beverage? Sparkling water (lime flavor) with lots of ice and mint.   What has been an unexpected perk along this journey? Freedom and time that come with not planning how you will get your next drink.    What would you say to young people who are considering ditching the booze? Don't overcomplicate it, drinking is overrated.  You have more strength than you realize.  Everything in life you want to accomplish will be easier without liquor.  Having a clear head, mind and a simple life without the alcohol will be the beautiful things in your life.    You might need to say adios to booze if …. You stress months before the Christmas holiday about how you will cook the holiday meal and not drink all the wine in the house the night before.      Odette's Summary   Odette recently returned from Guadalajara and while she was there, she celebrated her father's 12th sober birthday.  They attended an AA meeting together and she heard him tell his story.  She saw herself in his words.  We all walk alongside each other.  We the same lessons to learn, hurt to heal and joy to find.  Seeing her dad as a parent and fellow in recovery was challenging, but she left the meeting hopeful that we are all human, doing the best that we can.  Odette is grateful for the Café RE community that helps each other navigate the world, feel understood and gives us a sense of belonging.   Remember you are not alone.  If you want to go fast, go alone.  If you want to go far, go together.     Today's Sponsor   BetterHelp  Visit betterhelp.com/ELEVATOR and join the over 500,000 people talking charge of their mental health with the help of an experienced professional. Episode 24.  God Images and Self ImagesJuly 13, 2020 Intro: Welcome to the podcast Coronavirus Crisis:  Carpe Diem, where you and I rise up and embrace the possibilities and opportunities for spiritual and psychological growth in this time of crisis, all grounded in a Catholic worldview.   We are going beyond mere resilience, to rising up to the challenges of this pandemic and becoming even healthier in the natural and the spiritual realms than we were before.  I'm clinical psychologist Peter Malinoski your host and guide, with Souls and Hearts at soulsandhearts.com.  Thank you for being here with me.  This is episode 24,  released on July 13, 2020 and it's called God Images and Self Images.  Today we're going to consolidate some of our learning to date, spiraling back to a few key concepts and then bringing those key concepts to life in a story.  You may remember Richard and Susan from Episodes 17 and 19 when we were doing a three-episode series on grief – you long-time listeners that were with us six to eight weeks ago may remember.  And you may have forgotten.   No worries.  Don't worry if you don't remember.  We are going to review all the key concepts briefly here and I'll catch you all up on the doings of Susan and Richard, as we begin this fifth installment on Catholic resilience.  We're also going to take a close, in-depth look at the negative God images that Richard and Susan struggle with, and how those God images impact how they feel about themselves and each other.  Now if you are just joining us, Richard and Susan are made up – I created these characters to illustrate the concepts we're discussing, buy they are realistic, and have issues common in our lives.   I said were going to review what a God image is, so let's just go over that again briefly. My God image is my emotional and subjective experience of God, who I feel God to be in the moment.  May or may not correspond to who God really is.   Initially my God images are shaped by the relationship that I have with my parents.  This is my experiential sense how my feelings and how my heart interpret God.  My God images are heavily influenced by psychological factors, and different God images can be activated at different times, depending on my emotional states and what psychological mode I am in at a given time.   God images are always formed experientially.  God images flow from our relational experiences and how we construe and make sense of those images when we are very young.  My God images can be and usually are radically different than my God concept. My God concept   What I profess about God.  It is my more intellectual understanding of God, based on what one has been taught, but also based on what I have explored through reading.  I decide to believe in my God concept.  Reflected in the Creed, expanded in the Catechism, formal teaching.   This distinction between God image and God concept is so critical, I really want you to grip onto it, to really understand it a deep level. I hope you can really digest to the difference, not just at a conceptual level, but at a much deeper level in you, and hang onto it for the rest of your lives. I mean that. Remember the causal chain that we discussed last time? Letting ourselves be taken in by our bad God images leads us to lose confidence in God, which in turn causes us to become much less resilient.  Allowing our problematic, heretical God images to dominate us, to exert influence on us in subtle but powerful ways.   In the last episode, Episode 23, we discussed how the greatest sin against the First Commandment among us serious Catholics is defaulting to our negative God images, and letting them rule us, not resisting their pull on us, letting them draw us away from God.  The more we give into our negative, heretical God images, the more they color our God concepts, leading us to entertain doubts in our intellect about God's love, his power, his mercy, his goodness.  And once we abandon our God concept to the notions of our heretical God images, we are headed for major trouble.  Richard and Susan from Episodes 17 and 19 on Grief.  We're going to take a close look at Susan's God images throughout her life to date in more detail, and in order to do that, we have to go back 100 years, and some generations.  Susan's father Pawel--  Born 1919 in Pittsburgh to Polish immigrant parents, Pawel's mother died shortly after he was born from Spanish influenza.  Youngest of three brothers.  Grew up in the 1920s  with his father and two older brothers.  No sisters, no experience of mother, no stepmother – some extended family but not really close.   Pawel's father (Susan's grandfather)  was a wheelwright, making wagon wheels.  At age 10, Al experienced the stock market crash and the Great Depression, hard times, unemployment, and a rough house, with some alcoholism.  So Pawel grew up in difficult economic circumstances, completed 8th grade, went to work as a printer's apprentice and then to war in 1942 and fought in the American infantry in France under Pershing.  In 1945, return with some shellshock, not able to talk about war experiences.  In 1951 six years after the war ended, 32 year old Pawel married Maja, an 18 year old Polish immigrant who had US shortly after WWII ended.   He had known Maja's family.  Maja was devoted to Pawel, very social, very outgoing, but with a history of unresolved war trauma from the German invasion of Poland when she was a little girl in the late 1930's.  Pawel and Maja had four children, three boys and then Zuzanna – which is Polish for Susan -- Zuzanna was the youngest of the four, born in 1960.  Life was good for the family in the 1950s and 1960s.   Susan:§  Susan's Father the good days·         Worked in a printing shop, a master printer, first shift·         High school education, funny, affectionate, a great story teller·         Susan was the youngest, and the only girl, three older brothers, everyone said she was her mother's daughter, similar to Mom Maja  in so many ways, both physically and in her personality  ·         Dad gave her lots of warmth and affection as a baby and toddler and little girl, all through grade school – he read to her and was like the coolest dad, because he would come to her tea parties with her dolls – §  God image – Susan found it easy to pray – first communion, first confession.  Warmth toward God, sunny days.  Felt beloved.  §  Susan's Father – the difficult days·         But when she turned 14, in 1974, it became a difficult relationship – she and her father did not see eye to eye.o   When Susan reached puberty, Dad withdrew emotionally – seemed to reject her hugs and kisses, told her those were “things little girls did” and “Susan, you're a big girl now”o   She told him he had always said she'd be his little girl and didn't understand when he said nothing in responseo   She didn't understand the tears in his eyes or why he'd turn away, leave her and watch TV alone in his deno   her heart ached for him.  She tried to reconnect, but he seemed cold and distant,  She tried for four years, all through high school – she'd look at the photo albums of how happy Dad was when he was with her – beaming, smiling, throwing her in the air and catching her.  Up until 14.  Maja didn't really seem to notice how difficult the relationship was.   o   Then in college, she rejected him, and went her own way, looking for the love from older boyfriends who were physically affectionate.  ·         Died suddenly and unexpectedly of a heart attack in 40 years ago in 1980, at age 61.  Susan Susan was 20, in college and it broke her heart.  Grief.  Guilt over rejecting him, guilt over the conflicts she had had with him, over her coldness and rejection of him.  ·         God image – felt abandoned, alone, God so distant.  She must have done something wrong.  And she had sexual partners.   ·         At Present:o   60 years oldo   Extroverted, very emotionally expressiveo   Raised Catholic, drifted away in adolescence and young adulthoodo   Reinvested in the faith about 27 years ago in 1993 with the birth of her first son, very conflicted about the miscarriage. o   Never really addressed the miscarriage of her baby daughter 20 years ago, whom she desperately wanted.  o   Wide circle of friends and acquaintances, close friend Valerieo   Professional translator in Spanish and Italiano   Scare with breast cancer five years agoo   Mother Maja has recently died at age 87 in the nursing home from the coronavirus Richard:·         61 years old·         Emotionally reserved, doesn't talk about his feelings easily, has trouble naming them·         Cradle Catholic who attends Sunday Mass, not really that invested in religion.  ·         Engineer, had made it into middle management, but lost his position when his whole division was shut down due to some internal issues in his company·         Considering retirement, not sure what to do with himself·         Day trades stocks – has a system, has made some income from that·         Porn use The Couple            ·         Married in 1992.  28 years ago.  ·         Three sons aged 27, 25 (John) and 23 years old ·         Susan troubled by emotional and physical distance in the marriage, over the last 25 years·         Susan very upset about discovering her husband's porn use  Where they are right now.  July 2020 – we're picking up the story again.  Will·         Fair degree of conflict right now – over the porn useo   Susan taking it hard – had assumed that her husband just wasn't very interested in physical intimacy§  Maybe low testosterone§  Maybe focused on work, other things§  Maybe a health issue – Richard hated going to the doctor, might have prostate trouble, won't get it checked out.  §  Self image, body image issues.  “He doesn't want me.”  “He hasn't wanted me for 25 years now”   o   He doesn't want me§  Activating some psychological issues with her Father§  Never knew why…   So now let's move into some new concepts:  Self-concept and self-image  -- Parallel to the God concept and God image Self-concept: This what we intellectually believe about ourselves, who we profess ourselves to be, what we understand about ourselves, our mental construct of ourselves.  The self-concept of a practicing Catholic, for example, may include being a beloved child of God.  There's a link between God concepts and Self-concepts – they go together, they harmonize.  Loving Shepherd, little sheep.   Self concepts and God concepts interact, there reciprocal causal effects.  Makes sense Self-images on the other hand, are much more emotionally driven, much more intuitive, subjective, and they vary a lot more from moment to moment.    These go together with God images – they impact each other  Self-images can flow from God images, they conform to God images.  God is the reference point, not us.  In spite of the Enlightenment's attempts to make the individual human being the measure of all things, we still look outside of ourselves to define ourselves.   But self-images can also impact God images.   Examples of Susan's self-concept  Exercise God image in your dark place.  Now look at your self image that corresponds .    Last Friday, July 10, Zoom meeting for RCCD community members to hang out and discuss together God images, and that is now up.   Bonding, really becoming the community.  Connecting.  Yearning to connect.  4 elements.  Do not have to be anything like perfect – we are all wounded in various ways, we all have our struggles.  Being real about God images, real about self-images, in the messiness, untidiness of these real issues.  Because we want real healing.   Check it out. Susan Eick thought she had to act like a man in order to get invited into the corporate boy’s club, but it wasn’t working! The harder she tried, the fewer things she got invited to, and to top it off, it was exhausting! Why pretend to be something you’re not? Susan has learned over the years that being your authentic self is the best way to lead and have people respect/admire you. Women/Men have natural talents and we should leverage them, not try to act like each other.   Key Takeaways ● Leadership is a people’s game. ● Leaders are having time now to really take a step back and analyze where their time is going. ● As leaders take more digital meetings, they’re not scheduling time for breaks and so they end up feeling more exhausted than before. ● Sometimes it can be difficult to innovate, there’s a lot of testing that goes into it or they might not have a budget so they don’t prioritize it, but Susan is seeing that so many leaders had to innovate overnight due to the pandemic. ● They didn’t think they had innovation in them, but they were wrong! They were able to get things up and running with no budget, within a week. ● Susan explains the difference in culture in Canada vs. the U.S. ● What risks are out there for a modern leader? ● There’s a pent up demand for getting this back to normal as quickly as possible and leaders are forgetting that you still need to communicate to your team! ● Susan’s first employee retreat, she didn’t know if it went well or not. Fast forward to her latest one and she’s never felt more connected. The biggest shift in this was Susan and being more open/authentic to her team. ● When Susan was coming up in her corporate career, she had to look like a guy and show no emotions. ● Susan realized she couldn’t be someone she wasn’t, so when she started opening up and showing more of her personality, that’s when more doors opened for her. ● What’s next for Susan? ● Susan’s daughters have better female role models than she did when she was growing up. She is very hopeful for the future.   Resources Refineryleadership.com Susan on LinkedIn   Quotes   Michelle’s quote: “There is a level of importance around keeping the intimacy around human connection and leaders with their team.”   “Leadership’s a people’s game and we’ve forgotten that. In the past we thought it was a title, status, responsibility, and people get pushed down.”   “Leaders I’ve been talking to have said that they’re forced to innovate overnight. We have this need and we have to act on it now.”   “Work says they want your best you, but what if your best you is something that is not as beautiful and polished as what they’ve experienced in the past?”

My guest today is Susan Gunn, CFE. That’s short for Certified Fraud Examiner. Our talk today isn’t all about fraud though. We talk about money, receivables and why ethics is an issue today. Susan is a prolific author and sought-after speaker in the dental industry. She’s one of my top financial go-to persons so keep her information handy! A couple of high points from our conversation: Hear what Susan and I both think about EFTs (electronic fund transfers). Her take on it comes from a Quickbooks and accounting point of view while I tackle the workload issues. Fraud in our industry is more widespread than you think. If you ask any speaker/consultant they’ll tell you reported numbers are low. Why is that? What do you do when you spot it? What does ethics have to do with dentistry? How often do Susan and Teresa hear crazy ethical questions? Often. We’ll describe different scenarios so you can be on the lookout. What’s this trend of zero-ing out fee schedules? We shake our head at this all too common phenomena. If you give employee benefits, are you reporting it correctly? Can it come back to bite you? We transition into one of Susan’s older books about caregiving. Whatever stage of life you’re in it’s applicable. Do you have a succession plan for when a key player like a manager or even the doctor pass away? Here’s how to put that in motion.   Resource Links: Susan’s books:Money In, Money Out: : $en$ible Financial Organization In Your Practice Matters Of The Heart: A Journey in Caring For Aging Loved Ones How to find Susan:Susan’s company on Facebook Susan on Twitter Susan on LinkedIn

This is not a typical story of Internet stalking. It is an unusual case of friendship and deception so pitiless and unyielding that it opened a door to Hell into the author’s life. This is an unforgettable story for today’s digital world driven by social media in all of its permutations and cruelest forms. The story begins with Susan Fensten’s online search for her father’s family, a search that soon turns into a two-year frightening odyssey of internet stalking and threats when a posting on a genealogy message board brings her into contact with what she thinks are distant cousins, but what turns out to be a sociopath. Through email correspondence with her new “family”, evidence of mental illness, dark family secrets, a struggle over wealth and bizarre criminal histories emerge. She quickly becomes the focus of sexual obsession and suspicion, and her life is completely turned upside down. She soon becomes the target of dozens of frightening characters including real verifiable convicted sex offenders in an elaborate cyber-hoax that includes threats of kidnapping, murder, rape, torture and cannibalism. Remarkable in its complexity, this story of Internet stalking is also a sinister and shocking journal of madness. Described by the FBI as a case “in a category by itself,” This book is a story about the Internet, the search for family, a friendship and a journey into the underbelly of American crime that raises questions about safety online and pushes the boundaries of our perceptions of what is real and what is not. Each one has provided incredible examples of the power of following your “Yes”.  Enjoy! Susan BrattonNot Following - It is hard for Susan to find a time when she didn’t follow her “Yes.” She tries to live her life in every way that supports her higher good and those around her. She checks in to see if something will exhaust her or add value.  Susan checks in against the three main goals she has at any given time (one personal and two business). This leads her to say no to almost everything because she is on her own agenda. You can tell how good a decision maker you are by the state your life is in.   Once your a “Yes” to something, how can you make it better? Following - When Susan and her husband, Tim, started their business together it started as a podcast network with 40 different podcasts. This was not financially viable so they needed a new direction. They were doing a bit of everything, but in their hearts they knew that what people wanted from them was the sexuality content they were creating. But they didn’t want to be “people in the sex business” because most people immediately think of porn. Susan got clear that she created online courses in heart connected, conscious love making techniques. And as many people as there are who try and shame her for her work, she knows that what she does is the antidote to the porn industry that most people think of when she says she is in the “sex business.” Not everybody is going to like her no matter what she does.  Her “Yes” was when they decided the “sex business” was what they were doing. They could not be all things to all people and they were not going to do it half way.  As hard as that was, Susan and Tim went for it and they now help millions of people have happier, healthier sex lives. She had a boyfriend at home who she was clear was not the right partner for her, but she was afraid of being single. As soon as she started traveling she didn’t want to come home, but she had made plans to come home to attend a wedding with her boyfriend. Liesel wanted to keep traveling and it was so clear that she needed to say “yes” to the camp on a river in Nepal. And instead she did not listen to her “Yes” and felt an obligation and fear driving her decision to go back and rekindle this relationship. So she went back with the intention to go traveling again, but never did. And she moved to a town she didn’t really want to be in and getting a job that she didn’t want to be in a relationship that she really didn’t want to be in. This led to a downward...

Susan CampbellNot Following - When Susan was 21 years old she was having guidance to do more than just marry her high school sweetheart. And she had this impulse to follow these impulsed, but all of her friends were getting married. She was also getting guidance not to marry her fiancee. And when she spoke to her parents about it they said whatever she wanted they were fine with. And her girlfriends told her it was just cold feet. And she listened to her girlfriends and went ahead and got married. Ultimately it ended up in divorce 5 years later. Following - Susan was one of the only women on the faculty at the University of Massachusetts and all of her female colleagues envied her this incredible job. She found a book in a garbage can that was a guide book for visiting San Francisco. So she visited San Francisco on her next school holiday and fell in love with the city and decided California was the place for her. Thirty days after that, their apartment flooded. And for six months they lived in a construction zone while this was repaired. Not at all the space they fell in love with. None of this was good for their relationship or their health and wellbeing. In hind sight Kelsey knows that if she had listened to her “Yes” it would have been a much better choice. Following - In 2008 Kelsey got an intuitive hit that she needed to move out of the city she lived in.  She had always been drawn to Vancouver. Even though she did not know anyone in Vancouver and there was no logical reason to move there, she picked a date and committed to making this move. Once she arrived, she met a group of people who became essential building blocks for her life as she knows it now. They turned out to be her family and the community she had always been looking for.
