Eat Lunch and Board Game
A Universal Truth - Review

Eat Lunch and Board Game

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 17, 2025 13:12

A few weeks ago, I had professor and author Marco Arnaudo on the show. We talked about his amazing book, Tabletop Revolution. One of the many games I bought because this book was A Universal Truth. It was in the card games section. Marco talked about how cards have evolved from their rudimentary beginnings as just a suit and a number to multi-use, multi-functional components. He mentioned A Universal Truth:  The Strategic Game of Courtship, designed by Patrick Einheber, self-published by Danger Toad Games via The Game Crafter. What drew me to this game truly was Marco talking about how Patrick used every inch, every side, every bit of the card to move the game forward. As happened many times while I was reading Tabletop Revolution, I put my copy down, picked up my phone, and immediately did some digging into A Universal Truth. I reached out to the designer, who graciously mailed me a copy. When it arrived, Edward and I carefully tore into it.In A Universal Truth, you and your coworkers are trying to woo your loved one. To do this, you must meet or exceed all of their requirements: affection, social amity, accomplishments, and of course money. That is just the basic version of the game. I will explain more later in the episode. So, put on your ascot and monocle, gather your coworkers, and see who can court their love first in A Universal Truth.Directing people to the get the games tab

Eat Lunch and Board Game

A few months back, like six or more, I sponsored a design competition on past guest JT Smith's The Game Crafter. The competition was to design a lunchtime game. It had to be playable in a lunch hour and appropriate for work. There were 77 entries! Of those, seven were selected to be finalists. Those seven were then shipped to me to playtest. I took all of these to work to play with my coworkers. I mean, that was literally the purpose of the competition. So, with the help of 2 or 3 of my coworkers each day, we played all seven games. Some were instant successes requiring another play, hopefully with a different player count. Some were not so lucky. As a group, we narrowed down the finalists to the top three. In the end, we made the decision to award Locked Out by Little Rhombus Games as the winner. In this episode, I am joined by René Uittenbogaard, the designer of Locked Out. We talk about the usual questions, but also about his game.  He also had a lot of great game suggestions. Stay tuned for future updates for the publishing of Locked Out by Bearded Board GamesDesign CompetitionLocked Out

On this very special bonus RARE SLOT episode we dig into depths of collectible game history to bring you a previously untold story about a CCG that was never published.Way back in the mid-1990s, college student Quan Williams created a fan-made collectible card game based on the TRANSFORMERS cartoon & toy line. After posting his ideas online, the project went viral! (...at least as viral as thing went back in 1996).Soon his ideas had caught the eye of a fellow amateur game designer, Rich Garner. Together they honed the game—titled TF BattleCards—& eventually they were able to get it seen by Hasbro, the world biggest toy company & owners of the Transformers IP.Quan joins Rands in this episode to tell us about his experiences designing that game & recalling the compete saga, including what happened once Hasbro got involved.Quan is still creating games today. Bobby Fiorentino began building his crowd nearly a year before he even knew what his Kickstarter project was going to be.He built a following, using Live Stream, Giveaways, and advertising to draw people to his Facebook group where they shared common interests. His group rapidly grew to more than 4,000 members. He then began using this new crowd to develop ideas and as a sounding board for a Kickstarter project. Then, with the project beginning to be fleshed out, he identified what the least amount of money would be needed to be successful and how to use GameCrafter to build out his game.He settled on $500.That may not seem like a lot of money to start with on Kickstarter, but Bobby's project, called This Game Is A Disaster, leveraged all the right assets, followed all the right steps, and while the goal was modest, his process was exceptional. This interview with Bobby Fiorentino is well worth your time to listen. If you are a new project creator or even someone who has been Kickstarting for a while, you will find some extremely useful advice from this first timer.

We post new episodes every other Thursday, with each episode being about 45 minutes long. Vox Republica is proudly supported by our Patreon. Consider contributing today! DESCRIPTION: Indie gaming. Chances are you've heard this term casually mentioned throughout the gaming world. But...what does that mean exactly? Erin and Ryan break down the term “indie.” What qualities does an indie game or company have to have, and when does an indie turn into a small publisher, big publisher, or mega-hit? GUEST: None RECENTLY PLAYED GAMES - (01:13): Hearts Blazing by Games By Play Date Pandemic Legacy by Z-Man Games Takenoko by Asmodee Editions Quadropolis by Days of Wonder Green Deal by Karma Games QUICK TOPICS - (23:14): Privateer Press has announced on the heels of the Asmodee changes to its distribution rules that it too will be limiting distribution to online retailers. The CR will be participating in the Home Away Boston gaming charity event being hosted by the gang at The Cardboard Jungle podcast to raise money for cancer patients while undergoing treatment. It's for a good cause and they'll be giving numerous games away as prizes. Best part: you don't have to attend to participate. Consider making a donation today! FEATURED TOPIC - (30:34): The term 'indie' is used pretty freely in board gaming, and the intention is well understood. At least, until you try to define it. So we decided to sit down and hammer out what some of that criteria may be. What IS indie? What is the line between indie and mainstream publisher? We consider some of the following criteria: The size of the publisher How long has the publisher been around The designer of the game Print run size Production model of the game (i.e. factory made, self-publisher, Game Crafter, etc.) Marketability of being indie Cultivation of an 'indie' brand Also, we ponder if the idea of 'indie-ness' is still useful as a term at all.   PLUGS - (58:02): As always, Cardboard Republic YouTube videos and the BGG Guild are still ongoing. We post new episodes every other Thursday, with each episode being about 30 - 40 minutes long. DESCRIPTION: This week, Erin and Ryan gush about Pandemic: Legacy and recount the big news about Gen Con 2016 before sitting down for an in-depth chat with the designers of Trickerion GUEST: Viktor Peter and Richard Amann RECENTLY PLAYED GAMES: Pandemic: Legacy by Z-Man Games Monarch by Mary Flanagan LLC Heroes Wanted by Action Phase Games Viceroy by Mayday Games Ghost Stories by Asmodee Editions DragonFlame by Minion Games QUICK TOPICS: Gen Con recently announced that starting in 2016 both the expansion of the convention into the nearby stadium and that the hotel lottery system is here to stay. We touch upon the implications of both. FEATURED TOPIC: It's time to get tricky! As part of our month-long look at the magician-centric Euro Trickerion, we sit down with the co-designers of the game to get all sort of neat info about it, including: Where the idea behind the game came from The development process to reach the state we see in the final version Lessons learned from Kickstarter Its release at Essen And more! PLUGS: The CR has hit three years! For the remainder of 2015 and beyond keep an eye on all manner of changes to the site. Case in point: the aforementioned logo. We recently reviewed the tableau-builder Monarch, and Rob inspects the latest Game Crafter game Crazier Eights. As always, Cardboard Republic YouTube videos and the BGG Guild are still ongoing. Two years have gone by and they’ve barely registered in podcasting terms. It really feels like yesterday since I started the podcast, barely knowing what I was doing and how to do it. I can’t say now I know how to do it, and I only know marginally better what I am doing, but it’s been the hell of a ride, mostly good, and I am extremely pleased that I embarked on this adventure. Cheesy as this might sound, I have to thank every single person who’s come to the podcast for interviews. Without the gracious and generous people who’ve donated their time to come to the podcast and let me ask some questions, this show wouldn’t be anywhere near as interesting as it is. And without the hosts who’ve come and gone, and those who stay, it would also be pretty boring and I would have probably lost you, my dear listener, or lost interest. I can genuinely say I have been very blessed by the people who’ve been with me during the last two years. So thank you guys, I owe you a great deal. But enough is enough. This anniversary is going to be commemorated with a two episode special. The first one, in this post, features an interview with Mr JT, owner and mastermind behind The Game Crafter. As a business, The Game Crafter creates professionally produced boardgames at reasonable prices and in very low quantities, so if you want a nicely produced and polished prototype for your game, this is your company. Dr Mike Reddy pinned JT down for some questions and some very, very interesting and sometimes surprising, answers. But it seems not every one considers polished prototyping to be necessary… In fact one of our co-hosts thinks they’re not necessary at all! Listen and marvel! As always, feedback is extremely appreciated and you can send us an email at podcast@gmsmagazine.com. We very much look forward to hearing from you!
