Hello, Kaiju Lovers! It's time to unpack the biggest kaiju release of 2024—Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire! For such a momentous occasion, Nate called upon YouTuber Donny Winter (Growing Up with Godzilla) and a “mystery guest”…who didn't make it. Darn. So, he got the next best option: The Omni Viewer and his monster sidekick, Snazzy! They dive deep into the fifth entry of Legendary Pictures' MonsterVerse series, unveiling its connections to classic pulp fiction and ‘80s pop culture—all without comparing it to Godzilla Minus One (for the most part) while also coining many memes. You'll not find a more concentrated dose of positivity (and honesty) toward this escapist movie anywhere else. Since it's set mostly in the Hollow Earth (and Nate almost researched this for Godzilla vs. Kong), the Toku Topic is Hollow Earth theory. Jimmy's Notes on this episode COMING SOON on the MIFV website! This is the third episode in a 10-part series inspired by the people Allison Langer taught memoir writing, in a men's prison. You will hear new stories by her former students and stories from other incarcerated or formerly incarcerated people around the world.Today's show shares a story by Roderick Richardson, an inmate in a Florida prison. Rod is a master storyteller who grew up in Liberty City, which is a very rough area in Miami. Rod took care of his six brothers and sisters when his mom was incarcerated. At 12 years old, Rod sold drugs to keep food on the table. His story is not unique, unfortunately. Rod is serving a life sentence for robbery. We also share an interview with former prison doctor, Karen Gedney. Dr. Gedney is an internal medicine specialist who spent almost 30 years as a prison physician. She was designated as one of the best in the business by the American Correctional Association and won a Heroes for Humanity Award for her work in HIV in the correctional system. Dr. Gedney ran the only regional prison medical facility in the state of Nevada. She was a naive young physician who survived a world she was ill-prepared for and turned it into a calling. You can read Dr. Gedney's story in her book, 30 Years Behind Bars. Trials of a Prison Doctor. Writing Class Radio is produced by Allison Langer, Andrea Askowitz, Xaire, and by Matt Cundill, Evan Surminski and Courtney Fox at the Sound Off Media Company. For further information go to: www.jenniferjhammond.com From the time she was 9 years old Karen dreamed about being a doctor. She read countless stories about doctors, they enthralled her because in those stories was adventure, danger, romance and methods to take care of the underdog. Part of the allure of medicine was that, as a doctor, people would need her help. To finish medical school Karen received a scholarship. In exchange she was required to spend 4 years caring for the underserved. She was directed to Northern Nevada Correctional Center where she became the first woman doctor to serve at a men's prison. Before the 4 years were up she determined to turn her work as a prison doctor into a career. Karen saw the difference she could make in a population that needed a doctor who would stand up for them and protect them from abuses of power. Karen shares, “The most challenging experience I faced in the prison was being held hostage by an inmate on Friday the 13th October 1989. He was one of my patients. Being assaulted and raped by that inmate, and then seeing him killed by the SWAT team affected me emotionally, and made me doubt myself. I had to deal with shock, anger and then find forgiveness.” After Karen retired from the prison system, she dedicated herself to prison reform. Karen also wrote her memoir, 30 Years Behind Bars: Trials of a Prison Doctor. Karen states, “I wanted to share my experience about being a woman working in a hyper-male environment, surviving personal trauma as well as why the US needs to approach prison reform holistically and with compassion.” Karen discusses with great vulnerability such diverse topics as overcoming trauma, dealing with; racism, mental illness, HIV, executions, cancer, dying, regret, the power of redemption, education and poetry. For years, in addition to being a prison doctor Karen and her husband Clifton, mentored children who had parents in the prison system. Since her husband suddenly passed away in February of 2019, Karen still mentors those children. Today she lives with a roommate, one of the inmates she became acquainted with while working in the prison. Her day consists of working out in the gym while listening to podcasts, and walking for an hour. She takes classes in ballroom dancing for fun. Karen sits on the boards of Ridge House and the board for the Nevada Prison Education Project, which places college courses in the prison. Karen Gedney is relentless in working on prison reform including working with the team to abolish the death penalty in Nevada. To that end she gives interviews and lectures on the Holistic prison model.
In 1987, Karen Gedney, MD, was the first woman doctor in Nevada, placed in a male medium security prison. Today she joins us to discuss her memoir, 30 Years Behind Bars: Trials of a Prison Doctor The topics in 30 Years Behind Bars are as diverse as: surviving as a woman in a male-dominated hierarchy overcoming personal traumathe issues of racism, mental illness, HIV, executions, and cancer Her true stories, the adversities she survives, and why she turns it into a calling that lasts 30 years will forever change the way you see prisons. Karen was designated as one of the best in the business by the American Correctional Association and won a 'Heroes for Humanity Award' for her work in HIV in the correctional system. Today she advocates for prison reform and inspires individuals and groups to become involved in reforming the prison system. Dr Gedney's site

This week Jim welcomes Dr. Karen Gedney to discuss prison reform and her experiences within the American prison system.
30 Years Behind Bars: Trials of a Prison Doctor is Karen Gedney's story, from her first day at the prison to her last. This next chapter for Karen is advocating for prison reform and mentoring children at risk. Now out of the system, Karen is able to make herself heard about the criminal justice system. It wasn't until 1976 that prisons had to offer medical care if there was a serious medical need. Not only was Karen one of the first doctors in a prison, but she was also one of the first female doctors. A male prison with male inmates and male guards. Two years into her start, Karen was taken hostage and raped by one of the inmates. And yet she stayed. She stayed through the Aids epidemic, through changing of guards, through years of years of change in the system. Karen stayed because she felt she was making a difference. And she did make a difference for so many of the inmates and their families. A riveting conversation with Karen: The beginning A kidnapping and rape and the decision to stay Rules, no rules and systems Being a female in an all-male environment She's white, her husband is Black – they thought she gave preferential treatment to Black inmates Evening programs and mentoring The power of redemption Seeing the results Advocating for criminal justice & prison reform

Everything else has been hard. -Kim Gedney Most psychics will tell you that they always had a 6th sense. They just “knew” things. But that was not always the case for Kim Gedney. The daughter of a drug addict, she had no time to think about anything else but survival and at one point, decided she wanted to end her life. That's when her phone began to ring and ring and ring. When Kim finally answered the phone, the person on the other end changed her life forever with his message and that is where this story begins. Now a wife and devoted mother of two sons, Kim is a medium, a psychic, a healer and a spiritual and intuitive life coach. Her ability to tap into exactly what her clients need is what sets this exceptional woman apart. We settled into our interview at a little bed & breakfast in Simsbury, CT called the 1820 House for an interview that focused on a three things Kim believes to her core: 1. Your gut is never wrong. 2. Your mind can mess you up every time. 3. Faith is the belief that there is something more. Curious? The phone rang and rang. The same number was calling again! Finally, Kim answered and that call not only saved her life, but set her on an unexpected path. Opening with a tender moment shared with William Gale Gedney on the Brooklyn Bridge in 1959, Joseph Caldwell’s “In The Shadow Of The Bridge: A Memoir” charts his three decades spent in downtown Manhattan pining for the great photographer. By the early 1980s with the AIDS epidemic terrorizing New York City and the atmosphere of free love and sex replaced by unrelenting fear, Caldwell was reunited with Gedney to care for him as the disease ravaged his body. Join us for a discussion of “In The Shadow Of The Bridge” and the events that inspired it in this edition of Leonard Lopate at Large on WBAI.
Karen and I met again for an update of information. As I know Karen personally, I get to see the impact she has made and is still making in the lives of prisoners - including having a former prisoner as a roommate in her house. Her focus is on using the prison system to rehabilitate people and send them into the world not only better than they came in but as contributing, adjusted people. She spends her time now teaching from the stage. In her words: I'd like to talk about how to use one's creativity to help transform institutions and society. I think that there is a lot of pain in the world that the medical and the correctional world both get wrong. Both concentrate on the endpoint which is preventable, costly and tragic. I think that creativity through stories, poetry, art, music and how we can touch other people's lives in positive ways can help transform systems and societies. I'll talk about why I wrote my book, but I'd also really like to talk about the healing I saw take place in the prison thru the creative writing and poetry course that was taught by Shaun Griffin, the poet laureate for the state and the inmates he was able to touch and transform. Also, the story of Ismael Santillanes the inmate artist who did the illustrations in my book and is now has a published poetry book called Indelicate Angels. It also happens that he taught fine art to inmate Michael Clifford Helm who is the author of Mayhem- A Life (his memoir where he mentions me and what I did as a prison doctor for him). He came in the prison with not completing high school and left with a high school diploma, 2 years of college and when he left became a nuclear medicine technician. Amanda Gedney begins by explaining her love of hula hooping and fire-spinning, how to do it, how she learned it, and how she manages the fire-spinning performances at the Jai Thep festival in Chiang Mai, Thailand. She then takes us on her journey, starting with growing up in New York, going to college at the Fashion Institute of Technology, studying abroad in Paris, falling in love with travel, and then totally pivoting and moving to Chiang Mai to teach English right out of college. She then explains her entrepreneurial trajectory and her experience building her company, Settle in Abroad, which helps digital nomads and teachers re-locate to Chiang Mai. She explains what is included in her turn-key relocation package, as well as her other shorter-term offerings for tours and experiences in Thailand. She then goes on to talk about “ethical tourism”, how travelers should think about it as they explore the world, and how she ethically vets all of her tours and experiences. Amanda then goes on to talk about building and scaling her business, the biggest challenges, and why she over-pays her staff and supports them in building their own businesses. She also talks about her partnership with One Tree Planted, Warm Heart and explains how and why Settle in Abroad gives back to social causes for every program sold. Amanda then gives her advice to high school and college students who desire remote work options and want to integrate travel experiences into their lives. How I Broke Into: Michael Prywes Interviews Artists and Entrepreneurs About Their Big Break
Janae Bakken grew up in Minnesota - where she spent too many frozen winters on the cross-country ski team, and went to college in Chicago - where she rarely saw the sun, so she made her escape to Los Angeles soon after graduation. She worked on the production staffs of such shows as Mad About You, Caroline in the City, and Malcolm in the Middle before making the jump to writer, where she spent eight years writing on the critically-acclaimed Scrubs, rising from a Staff Writer to Co-Executive Producer. Janae was twice-nominated for an Emmy Award with the other Scrubs writers. In addition, she has written & sold television pilots for Warner Brothers, ABC Studios, MRC and ABC Network. Janae was most recently a Co-Executive Producer on Freeform’s Baby Daddy for four years, and before that a Co-EP on Anger Management and Gary Unmarried. In 2007, she was selected to participate in the WGA Showrunner Training Program. In 2011, Janae was a guest professor at her alma mater Northwestern University, teaching Television Writing to the MFA Creative Writing students. Notes from the show: Grew up in a suburb of Minneapolis St. Paul, MN. She discovered "The Wonder Years," her favorite and my favorite television show. Northwestern University's "Creative Writing for the Media" program - selected 12 people each year, was in the program with me, Breen Frasier ("Criminal Minds") Heavily influenced by the show "Friends." A lot of her friends back home in MN got married in their early 20s. She lived in London, England after college. Hollywood will always be there, but you're better off going without attachments. La-La Land. If you want to be in television, you need to be in Los Angeles. 20 years later, she loves Los Angeles. "Everyone's starting over... you're in it together." It helps there are so many alumni there. Has been in the workforce since the age of 14, but all Los Angeles jobs were "in the industry." First screenplay was a comedy. First TV job was a comedy. Gave a funny speech at high school graduation. First job she had in L.A., she got fired. Agency job is a good foot in the door. On her resume, she mentioned her job as "Gedney the Minnesota Pickle." William Morris called about it. Interview with Pang-Ni Landrum; Mascot life got her the job. Unruly: most people can't do funny. At least 70% who made it in television comedy went the assistant route. During all down time, she wrote scripts. Every night, after work, would stay at desk and work on own scripts. Skills went "through the roof" being in the room with great writers. Had "interview" with UTA, thought she was being interviewed. "The longer I have done this, the more I realize how hard it is to run a show. And it's really easy to see who does it well and who doesn't." "I'm not young enough to know everything." - Oscar Wilde "Baby Daddy" is over, and she can't wait to get back in a writer's room. "The TV Writer's Workbook" - Ellen Sandler "Writing the TV Drama Series 3rd edition: How to Succeed as a Professional Writer in TV" - Pam Douglas Take a UCLA Extension class or Santa Monica Community College class
