It's DK time here at the Switch 2 The Past as Mike & Neil celebrate all things Kong-like in this part 1 of 2 episodes all about the big ape himself. Donkey Kong Country and Donkey Kong Country 2 Diddy's Kong Quest were iconic SNES games released 31 and 30 years ago respectively and have truly stood the test of time. This week friend of the show Kira @toonietwirls joins once again to discuss her love of the franchise and Diddy and Dixie in particular. And yes, the unbelievable David Wise score is discussed at length so stick around and you just may hear some Stickerbush Symphony sprinkled in.

fWotD Episode 2754: Donkey Kong Country Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Monday, 18 November 2024 is Donkey Kong Country.Donkey Kong Country is a 1994 platform game developed by Rare and published by Nintendo for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). It is a reboot of Nintendo's Donkey Kong franchise and follows the gorilla Donkey Kong and his nephew Diddy Kong as they set out to recover their stolen banana hoard from the crocodile King K. Rool and his army, the Kremlings. The single-player traverses 40 side-scrolling levels as they jump between platforms and avoid obstacles. They collect items, ride minecarts and animals, defeat enemies and bosses, and find secret bonus stages. In multiplayer modes, two players work cooperatively or race each other. After developing Nintendo Entertainment System games in the 1980s, Rare, a British studio founded by Tim and Chris Stamper, purchased Silicon Graphics workstations to render 3D models. Nintendo sought a game to compete with Sega's Aladdin (1993) and commissioned Rare to revive the dormant Donkey Kong franchise. Rare assembled 12 developers to work on Donkey Kong Country over 18 months. Donkey Kong Country was inspired by the Super Mario series and was one of the first home console games to feature pre-rendered graphics, achieved through a compression technique that converted 3D models into SNES sprites with little loss of detail. It was the first Donkey Kong game neither produced nor directed by the franchise's creator Shigeru Miyamoto, though he contributed design ideas.Following its announcement at the Consumer Electronics Show in June 1994, Donkey Kong Country was highly anticipated and backed by a major marketing campaign that cost $16 million in America alone. It was released in November 1994 to acclaim; critics hailed its visuals as groundbreaking and praised its gameplay and music. Its quality and design were favourably compared to the Super Mario series. Donkey Kong Country received several year-end accolades and set the record for the fastest-selling video game at the time. With 9.3 million copies sold worldwide, it is the third-bestselling SNES game and the bestselling Donkey Kong game. Following the success, Nintendo purchased a large minority stake in Rare, which became a prominent second-party developer for Nintendo during the late 1990s.Donkey Kong Country re-established Donkey Kong as a popular Nintendo franchise and helped maintain the SNES's popularity into the fifth generation of video game consoles. It is considered one of the greatest video games of all time and has been ported to platforms such as the Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, and digital distribution services. Rare followed it with two sequels for the SNES, Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest (1995) and Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! (1996), and the Nintendo 64 game Donkey Kong 64 (1999). After a hiatus, during which Rare was acquired by the Nintendo competitor Microsoft, Retro Studios revived the series with Donkey Kong Country Returns (2010) for the Wii and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (2014) for the Wii U.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:30 UTC on Monday, 18 November 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Donkey Kong Country on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Stephen.

Hello, Kaiju Lovers! It's time to unpack the biggest kaiju release of 2024—Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire! For such a momentous occasion, Nate called upon YouTuber Donny Winter (Growing Up with Godzilla) and a “mystery guest”…who didn't make it. Darn. So, he got the next best option: The Omni Viewer and his monster sidekick, Snazzy! They dive deep into the fifth entry of Legendary Pictures' MonsterVerse series, unveiling its connections to classic pulp fiction and ‘80s pop culture—all without comparing it to Godzilla Minus One (for the most part) while also coining many memes. You'll not find a more concentrated dose of positivity (and honesty) toward this escapist movie anywhere else. Since it's set mostly in the Hollow Earth (and Nate almost researched this for Godzilla vs. Kong), the Toku Topic is Hollow Earth theory. Jimmy's Notes on this episode COMING SOON on the MIFV website! Hello, Kaiju Lovers! According to MIFV's analytics, King Kong (and not Godzilla) is good for business right now, so in this excerpt from our Patreon-exclusive livestream, we're filling in one of the “gaps” from season 1's The Kong Quest (ba-dum-tsh!) Brendan Morley joins Nathan to discuss the almost-forgotten animated musical (you read that right), The Mighty Kong (1998). It's not only the first Kong musical, it's arguably the best—which isn't saying much. Still, it has an all-star talent line-up with Jodi Benson (The Little Mermaid) as Ann Darrow, Dudley Moore as “C.B.” Denham, and music by the Sherman Brothers. It can be argued this is the closest Disney has gotten to touching King Kong. Is it good? Depends on which host you ask. Join MIFV MAX on Patreon to see the uncut livestream version of this episode! Is RETURN OF THE JEDI the first prequel? The Brothers ponder this question during a roundtable discussion to mark the film's 40th anniversary. They examine the themes of this final film in the STAR WARS Original Trilogy, explore how the film makes the saga about a family instead of an individual, celebrate the film's technical achievements and performances, and dig into its remarkable editing. They also examine how it connects to the rest of the STAR WARS franchise and relitigate some of the film's most notorious elements, including George Lucas's Special Edition edits and the presence of Ewoks and other family-friend creatures.0:00 - Intro0:44 - Keynote2:47 - Roundtable: “Return of the Jedi”53:32 - OutroClips from:- “Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest” (1995) Nintendo- “The Empire Strikes Back” (1980) 20th Century Fox- “It's a Wonderful Life” (1946) RKO Radio Pictures- “Return of the Jedi” (1983) 20th Century Fox- “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace” (1999) 20th Century Fox- “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith” (2005) 20th Century Fox- “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” (2019) Walt Disney StudiosAren's review of RETURN OF THE JEDI for their 2019 STAR WARS Retrospective: https://3brothersfilm.com/blog/2019/9/30/star-wars-episode-vi-return-of-the-jedi-1983Read more of the 3 Brothers' reviews, features, and roundtables at https://3brothersfilm.comSubscribe to the 3 Brothers Film YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCO1zge4GZWu3-mdH-VPv8tw

Oh god Wind Waker's taking forever, this is technically our third bonus episode in a row, what have we do-… Oh uh, hey I didn't see you there! Uh… P-pirate crocodiles, am I right? What's up with them? They kidnap your friend and you have to take your girlfriend to beat them up? And your girlfriend has hair that she can like… uh… she can pick stuff up and be a helicopter and uh… um… This bonus episode is about Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest, a game that is in fact not called Diddy Kong's Quest, and I'm sure at least a few of you are going to be shocked by this revelation. It's a platformer full of monkeys and bananas and it's got a good soundtrack and look I'm sorry we're working on it, the ocean is big and sailing is hard, this game also has a pirate ship in it please just accept our apology.
We go back to an SNES classic that many people consider one of the best games of the era. This Episode we deep dive into DKC 2, to see if it still holds up.

Hello, kaiju lovers! Finally, the “Kong Quest” comes to an end! After months of delays due to avoiding competition and COVID-19, Godzilla vs. Kong has been released. It's not a fever dream—it's real! Nate is joined by his friend, Nerd Chapel founder Eric Anderson, to discuss the epic rematch nearly 60 years in the making. They host a special premiere for the Legendary film at the newly opened Denham Theater, an event that's been delayed and rescheduled as often as the film's release. A cavalcade of special guests attends, including the little Iwi deaf girl Jia. She is the youngest of “Kong's Queens,” all the surviving ladies who have captivated the Eighth Wonder over the years. Nate and Eric dive deep into the deceptively simple movie, discussing Kong's “hero's journey,” the Jules Verne-ian/Edgar Rice Burroughs-ian world-building, and its theme of mankind trying to control forces greater than themselves. You'll also hear them compare the movie to Conan the Barbarian, Die Hard, and The Lord of the Rings. The Toku Topic isn't about the content of the movie itself but a debate raging around it: movie theaters vs. streaming services. Which do you prefer to see a movie for the first time? Afterward, Nate and company hear that Kong had too much to drink at the after-party and has gone on a drunken rampage. MIFV's intrepid producer, Jimmy From NASA, volunteers to handle the situation the best way he knows how: Mechani-Kong Mk. 2. That goes about as well as you'd expect, so Nate and Eric recruit one of “Kong's Queens” for help so beauty can save the beast for once. Prologue and Epilogue written by Nathan Marchand with Eric Anderson. Music: -“Here We Go” by Chris Classic -“Pensacola, Florida (Godzilla Theme” by Junkie XL -“Skull Island (Kong Theme)” by Junkie XL -“A New Language” by Junkie XL -“Main Title” by Moscow Symphony Orchestra, composed by Max Steiner Sound effects sourced from Freesound.org (including some by InspectorJ). Is Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest the best game we've never covered on the show? I'd certainly listen to that argument, but fortunately, it's a right that's been wronged! My buddy, and the Diddy to my Donkey, Bradley McCue, joins me this week, and we have a nice beefy chat about the game many consider to be the best of the original DKC trilogy. This episode is worth listening to for the music alone. And as always, before we talk Dixie Kong's debut, it's another Remember The Game Infamous Intro! This week, we talk about what consoles should be considered "retro", the games I didn't understand as a kid, "petty" enemies, and why a game's length is directly compared to it's value. Plus, we have another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One'. This time, it's the Rare edition, featuring Donkey Kong Country, Banjo-Kazooie, and Diddy Kong Racing! If you want to skip to something specific, here's where to go: 0:00 - Intro 2:20 - Initial self-indulgent rambling & 'Expansion Pass #51: God of War (2018) Review' Clip 9:25 - 'Blowing In The Cartridge' (Listener comments & questions) 29:30 - 'Play One. Another title beautifully composed by David Wise, Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest is hands down the best in the series. If you enjoyed Episode 2, you're going to love this one because it is packed full of more amazing music. Peter and Cody try their hardest not to pick their favorite children, but how can you not have a favorite when there is one that is clearly the better of the three? As always, we discuss our history with DKC2, talk about our top five favorite tracks, and wrap up with some interesting tidbits we've discovered about the game. We hope you enjoy the episode! **Editor's Note** I apologize about the intermittent word skips happening throughout the episode. Something didn't save quite right with the audio file, so a few words get cut off in a few sentences. Thank you for your understanding. The game awards are almost here and you know what that means. Trailers of upcoming games. But we also have the nominations for this years games awards. Unfortunately for either of the boys they didn’t play much of this years games but that sure didn’t stop them on giving their opinion on the selections. Also IO Interactive (the guys who work on Hitman), announced they are working on a new Bond game. Plus Daniel discusses his love for the WWE game No Mercy, arguably the best wrestling game ever, as they celebrate its 20th anniversary. And we have lots more in this jam packed episode. Hello, kaiju lovers! We've finally reached the MonsterVerse! After surviving in the wilds of Monster Island for two months, Dallas Mora from Geek Devotions joins Nathan to discuss the Eighth Wonder's latest cinematic adventure, Kong: Skull Island. This pulpy adventure movie directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts took Kong in a whole new direction, dropping his lovesickness and making him a benevolent but savage protector. Nathan and Dallas dive headlong into the film's rich backstory as explored in its comic book prequel, Skull Island: The Birth of Kong; discuss the colorful cast of characters played by a troupe of Marvel movie actors; and realize that Kong is the Batman of the MonsterVerse. The Toku Topic is the end of the Vietnam War, which leads to a poignant discussion that touches on pacifism, “just war” theory, and the treatment of war veterans (like the podcast's intrepid producer, Jimmy From NASA). A quick note: Due to Godzilla vs. Kong's release being delayed to November, we'll be taking a detour from the “Kong Quest” (ba-dum-ching) until then by covering films featuring other “kaiju kings.” Listen to find out who's first! Hello, kaiju lovers! In the latest episode of the “Kong Quest” (which is finally mentioned by name on the air!), Nathan is joined once again by author and “Golden Ticket Tourist” Nick Hayden of the Derailed Trains of Thought podcast to discuss the wacky but fun King Kong Escapes. Like with the 1933 film, this is Nick's first time seeing this 1967 Toho classic, which was the second (and sadly last) of Toho's Kong films, as it was made in the last year they held the rights to the Eighth Wonder. This is a first for the show as it's the first tokusatsu film directed by the great Ishiro Honda covered on the podcast. It's a crazy nexus of ideas borrowed from other productions and some that seemed to anticipate others. For one thing, its villain, Dr. Who, is both a derivation and a precursor to the famous British TV series! Nathan and Nick also note some funny connections to Rankin-Bass' classic holiday special Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer given that they collaborated with Toho on this live-action cartoon. The Toku Topic is how Toho's Japanese-American co-productions paralleled Japan-America relations. Stay tuned after the credits for a Marvel-style stinger and an important announcement. (FYI: This was recorded before the news that 2020's Godzilla vs. Kong would be delayed). Hello, kaiju lovers! In this special “side Kong Quest” ( ), Nathan is joined by author John LeMay (who is a gentleman and a scholar) to talk about two unmade King Kong films with connections to King Kong vs. Godzilla. The first was “King Kong vs. Frankenstein,” a project that special effects legend Willis O'Brien tried to get made in the late 1950s before it ended up at Toho. Then Godzilla and Kong almost had their rematch in the 1960s with Shinichi Sekizawa's “Continuation: King Kong vs. Godzilla,” where the Eighth Wonder becomes a surrogate parent to a Japanese baby! Hear all about them in this episode! These and many other lost Kong films are covered in great detail in John's book Kong Unmade: The Lost Films of Skull Island, which is part of Monster Island's library and one of Nathan's go-to resources for the podcast. Jimmy From NASA is absent for most of this episode because Kong and Godzilla were upset that Nathan skipped their 1962 monster mash movie, so Jimmy left to calm them down with the ORCA. The thing is, Nathan covered that film on his previous podcast, Kaijuvision Radio. Here's a link if you want to listen to it before the next episode: Episode 8: King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962) (The Japanese Economic Miracle (The Golden 60s)) Also, Happy Thanksgiving from all of us here on Monster Island! Hello, kaiju lovers! After Jimmy From NASA flies him back to Indiana to get his microphone, Timothy Deal of the Derailed Trains of Thought podcast returns to Monster Island to continue the “Kong Quest” with Son of Kong, the almost forgotten sequel to King Kong. If the 1933 masterpiece is a grand myth, the sequel is a pleasant bedtime story. Screenwriter Ruth Rose, when talking about writing this film, said, “If you can't go bigger, go funnier,” which is an apt statement about this film and sequels in general. Nathan and Tim's lively discussion connects Son of Kong to the Russian film Battleship Potemkin, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Terminator 2: Judgment Day—and gives Jimmy a lot of work for “Jimmy's Notes.” They also theorize about what happened to “Mrs. Kong”/Kiko's mother, which actually puts this and the first film into perspective…sorta. The Toku Topic builds off of the previous one with a philosophical discussion of how 1930s filmmakers addressed the Depression in their movies, touching on themes like escapism and collective rage. Here's the Kaijuvision Radio episode on King Kong vs. Godzilla for you to listen to as part of MIFV's Kong coverage: Episode 8: King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962) (The Japanese Economic Miracle (The Golden 60s)) Read Jimmy's Notes on this episode here. Pat May joins us to talk about "Bramble Blast / Stickerbrush Symphony" from the video game Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. That's right, another Pat! Two Pats! Innovation! Pat May loves video games more than anything and truly loves the music of video games more than most things.
They did it! Patrick and Mark rolled credits on Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest, and come away from it with a more positive view on the game. Plus, a bunch of convoluted theories: one about the Kong family tree (maybe “Donkey Kong” is a title; like Cesar), and another about this series being a stealth alt-right propaganda game (Kong KLAN? Dixie? OPEN YOUR EYES).
THEY’RE NOT LOVING THIS GAME. Patrick drops his bombshell theory: Donkey Kong Country 2 is a stealth sequel Battletoads. A compelling theory with very little evidence! It’s tough, but your hosts eventually memorize their way through the next two worlds - but still hate the beehive levels.
Patrick and Mark have soured on the experience! Your hosts lament the challenge DKC2 insists on presenting in every level. Plus, no one knows how to use coins or farm for lives. That’s okay: a helpful angler fish uses his bioluminescent powers for good and helps these monkeys find their monkey friend!
Patrick and Mark are fussin’ about names and stressin’ about collectables as they begin their discussion of Donkey Kong Country 2 in earnest. So far, it’s fun, but your hosts are already worried about difficulty… Plus probably too many comparisons to the original DKC!
Your hosts are big Donkey Kong Country fans, but are they persistent enough to actually make it through one of the classic titles they never played as kids? Plus, they’ve got problems with Dixie Kong’s curly blonde hair (she’s like a frog with a mustache!) and debate how to play this game with two-people.
In the mid 90s Nintendo partnered with UK developer Rare to develop a game based on their Donkey Kong character. The resulting game, Donkey Kong Country for the Super Nintendo, temporarily catapulted the animated gorilla into wide popularity. The resulting creative freedom this allowed Rare in potential sequels led to the release of Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest in 1995 and Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble in 1996. Debate over which of the two sequels reigned supreme raged for years. We've invited podcaster and graphic designer Dean Stephenson on the show to help settle the question once and for all in our second versus episode. You can follow Dean on Twitter @deanrobot - ask about his podcast and shirts (he likes being the middleman for his own stuff!) Good evening listeners! This week’s Chip Channel is all about Donkey Kong Country, the original SNES trilogy. We pay homage to David Wise (DKC 1, 2 and 3), John Beanland (DKC 1) and Eveline Fischer’s (DKC 1 and 3) enduring masterpiece. Donkey Kong Country holds a special place in many gamers’ hearts, both as a technological wonder of the mid 90s and as an emblem of VGM. As one of those fans, Andrei takes us through Donkey Kong Country’s genesis as a game, and through the meteoric rise of David Wise, from part-time freelancer to full-time legend. Tune in for some jungle beats and tell us about your favorite DKC tunes! Welcome to episode four of Retrograde! For our fourth episode, we take a look back at the classic platformer Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. Join me - Jack Marshall - and my co-hosts Anthony Hobday, Lysanne Fisher, and James MacFadyen as we jump into a barrel of fun with Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. Chosen by James MacFadyen this week we cover the tree-tops highs and the swamp lows of Diddy's Kong Quest. We discuss the excellent work performed by the OverClocked Remix Team who remixed the entire soundtrack to the game. Anthony also shares the acoustic arrangement cover performed by Fred Baty of the "Aquatic Ambience" music from the original game. Lastly, we each give our final Retrograde stamp to the game in the form of European cities purely because James didn't choose a grading system in time. This weeks episode is sponsored by DkVine.com. DkVine.com is your one-stop website for everything Donkey Kong related. With a thriving forum community, regular bonkers features, and even two Donkey Kong based podcasts DK Vine really is the only place you'll ever need to visit to get your dose of Donkey Kong.
