Richard Facioni, chair of retail groups Alquemie and Mosaic Brands – with upwards of 1,000 stores and brands including Surf Stitch, General Pants, Lego Stores, Ginger & Smart, Noni B and Rivers – thinks ecom pure players may be in trouble. Shoppers have swung back to physical stores just as digital customer acquisition costs “are going through the roof”. If marketers turn off the taps, sales evaporate, which could spell danger for the likes of The Iconic and Adore Beauty. Versus last year, “we're definitely seeing a pullback in online,” he says, with some brands back as much as 30 per cent. Meanwhile, retailers that stocked up to head off crunched supply chains may find themselves scrambling to offload in January as a “definite slowdown” bites. Facioni hates the word ‘omnichannel', but says it's the future of profitable retail – hence lining up a physical presence for $50m acquisition Surf Stich, currently an online pure-player. Fresh back from Dreamforce, Facioni's helping steer both group's commerce and ERP stacks, with a customer data platform likely to follow. He also predicts social commerce will be the next revenue frontier.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Paul Weingarth is the CEO and founder of Slyp - a fintech startup and platform sitting between retail/merchant services and banking. The vision of Slyp is to completely reimagine what a receipt could be used for. Rather than a receipt being the end of a transaction, Slyp are developing a network allowing a relationship between the merchant, bank and customer to begin at the end of the transaction. We hear about Paul's study of agri economics at uni (where his nickname was Urban Cowboy), his first full time role at Equigroup, how he helped to set up the team at Microsoft Financing in Australia before moving over to PayPal in 2010. Deeply passionate about the customer experience, and now with an enviable resume of experience, Paul co-founded Slyp in 2016 alongside Spiro Rokos and Mike Boyd. With just a prototype, Paul and Slyp were able to engage all four major Australian banks as both investors and current and future customers - the only Australian fintech to have done so. Slyp's merchant list extends across almost all verticals with the likes of Chemist Warehouse, General Pants, JD Sports, Harris Farm and the Rockpool Group all on board. Having raised $40mil, Slyp currently employs 50 staff with ambitions to have Slyp in the hands of 1 in 2 Australians by the middle of next year. The purpose-led company are also working on amplifying their sustainability by offering a recommerce space (reselling preloved items). Paul's goal is to see Slyp as an Australian made global proposition, hoping to get offshore into the US, UK and European markets. Anyone with a passing interest in fashion will have heard of Tash Sefton. She is one of Australia’s most successful fashion entrepreneurs. Tash started out her career in fashion manufacturing, and moved into a business role, overseeing production, manufacturing and buying for one of Australia’s biggest streetwear brands, General Pants. But it was when she started a blog called They All Hate Us with her friend and colleague, Elle Ferguson, that work and life changed for Tash. The runaway success of their website meant that she was able to leave her job behind and turn her website into a fully fledged fashion ecommerce business. From there she has gone on to co-host TV makeover show, Style Squad, create and se ll her artwork with her sister Hayley, and provide style consulting to corporates and private clients. With her huge following Tash has also been able to shine a light on causes close to her heart such as conscious consumerism and animal preservation. Tash talked to me about her career journey, which includes one of the funniest job resignation stories I’ve ever heard. She also tells it how it is to be a fashion entrepreneur: the hard work and long hours that go on behind the glamour of the Instagram grid, and how her approach to social media has completely changed as her career has developed. In episode sixteen of the Glow Journal podcast, host Gemma Watts sits down with Elle Ferguson, entrepreneur, influencer and founder of Elle Effect. Elle Ferguson is, quite literally, the original Aussie blogger. Her look has become something of a signature- long, tonged blonde hair, denim cutoffs and perpetually bronzed limbs. Having studied visual merchandising, interior design and architecture, Elle spent upwards of six years as National Womenswear Visual Merchandising Manager for General Pants, during which she became aware of that very signature- then dubbed the Wow Factor, now known as the Elle Effect. Elle is the master of the personal brand. From humble digital beginnings taking outfits photos in front of a roller door, it didn’t take long for Elle’s signature style to reach international recognition, capturing the attention of the Kardashians along the way. It was then that Elle started thinking about turning that personal brand into a a tactile one- and so, Elle Effect was born, a tanning mousse designed to replicate the golden glow that made up a third of that now iconic combo- blonde hair, denim cut offs, and tanned skin. In this conversation, Elle talks influencers moving into product development, what lead Elle to leave long-running blog They All Hate us to focus on a solo venture, the time she thought she was being catfished by Jen Atkin and why her first interview with General Pants took place through a shop window.
