Three billion dollars - that's the amount the government said New Zealand could reap from mining sector exports by 2035 if its strategy pays off. The plan, annouced today by Resources Minister Shane Jones, involves more mining, including of gold and coal, and forcing banks to finance fossil fuel expansion. But environmental groups are concerned the country won't meet its climate obligations and New Zealanders will be left with the clean-up bill. Amy Williams filed this report.

The courts may not be exempt from the Finance Minister's search for spending cuts. The Minister has asked all government agencies to identify potential annual savings of either 6.5 or 7.5 percent. This includes the Ministry of Justice, which administers the courts' budget. Such a move would raise eyebrows in the legal community, where the judiciary's independence is regarded as key to a well-functioning court system. The Minister of Finance declined our request for an interview, but in a statement, said she expects agency chiefs to exercise good judgement when proposing savings. In order to supposedly “save the planet,” the government of Ireland is considering a new proposal that would kill off as many as 200,000 cows over the next three years. The official narrative in Europe has gotten to the point where cows are seen as such a problem for the climate that government officials in Ireland are seriously working on a plan to kill hundreds of thousands of them, in order to meet the country's emission reduction goals. This development was uncovered by a local publication, the Irish Independent, using a freedom of information request to obtain a copy of an internal government proposal from within the Irish Department of Agriculture. Specifically, the plan called for the culling of 65,000 dairy cows per year, for three years. NZ Herald Wellington business editor Jenee Tibshraeny explained that Cabinet's decision to prevent the carbon price from rising saw the price of carbon fall significantly. Critics say it's a rehash of previous policies, but the farming minister says there will be £10 million more funding for constructing reservoirs on farms and better irrigation systems and nearly £34 million pounds to help livestock farmers improve their slurry storage. River Action is making a formal complaint to the Advertising Standards Authority about Red Tractor after an internal Environment Agency Report concluded Red Tractor membership was 'not a good indicator of environmental protection'. The charity says Red Tractor ads are misleading as they claim to be a world-leading standard and their environmental standards aren't good enough. Red Tractor says that the analysis of the data is misleading and insists farms that belong to its scheme fare much better in inspections than those that don't. National Pig Association welcomes a government plan to ensure fairness and transparency in the pork supply chain. Egg producers fear UK animal welfare standards will be undermined by the latest post-Brexit deal agreement, the CPTPP. The Trans-Pacific Partnership, whose members include Mexico, Canada and Japan, will have quotas for imports of ‘sensitive' products like beef and lamb, but not eggs. The industry says 99% of Mexico's eggs come from caged birds, a method of production banned in the UK in 2012. Tourism Minister Peeni Henare has revealed a new roadmap to strengthen the tourism workforce. This plan includes a voluntary Tourism and Hospitality Accord, allowing companies to set the bar for employment and on-the-job training. The tourism and hospitality sector has reported high rates of harassment and bullying and low pay. Agricultural scientists say a controversial plan to reduce farming emissions is a positive step for the sector. The government's plan, which is open for consultation, will require farmers to pay for emissions by 2025, but will reward them for planting trees and other vegetation.
