On this day, 10 June 1973, a strike of gravediggers at three cemeteries in the New York metropolitan area was expanded to include 44 others. On June 21, the courts ordered strikers to return to work, which they ignored. The president of the striking Local 365 of the Cemetery Workers and Greens Attendants union was subsequently found guilty of contempt of court, jailed and fined. Eventually, after 27 days of strike action, the employers from Jewish, Roman Catholic and nonsectarian cemeteries, collectively agreed most of the workers' demands, including annual wage increases of $12 per week for the next three years, and an employer-funded pension scheme. During the dispute some bodies were buried by relatives and friends of the deceased, but a backlog of at least 1,400 unburied bodies remained.More information, sources and map: https://stories.workingclasshistory.com/article/8213/NY-gravediggers-strike-growsOur work is only possible because of support from you, our listeners on patreon. From MPR News, Art Hounds are members of the Minnesota arts community who look beyond their own work to highlight what's exciting in local art. Their recommendations are lightly edited from the audio heard in the player above.Want to be an Art Hound? Submit here.WideSpot Performing Arts CenterShaun Duvall of Wabasha recommends a great opportunity for live music in her town: the monthly concerts from WideSpot Performing Arts Center. During the school year (September through May) WideSpot hosts concerts at the Broadway Theater — the old middle school auditorium on Broadway Ave. — in Wabasha. The series ends for the year on Saturday, May 9, with a concert by Americana band City Mouse. The Mankato band has been performing for more than 50 years.Shaun says: I think it'll just be fun! More than anything, it's just a place for local people to get together and visit and connect. And that's one of the great things about small towns, is when you can just spend time with each other.— Shaun Duvall Shaun says there are regular chances to hear live music in the summer, too: the Meet Me Under the Bridge concert series happens every Friday at 7 p.m. from June 12 – Aug. 28 at Heritage Park.‘Los Profanadores de La Calle Arenas'Actor, theater maker, and retired Macalester professor Harry Waters Jr. recommends that everyone see Teatro del Pueblo's “Los Profanadores de La Calle Arenas.” Set 50 years in a hotter, drier future, the play centers on a family of gravediggers in the Caribbean. The play was written by Lelis Brito and co-directed with Alondra Alamilla Benitez, with music by Carlisle Evans Peck. The show is performed entirely in Spanish, with English subtitles, at Park Square Theatre in St. Paul, May 8 – 17.Harry says: What's interesting about this piece, which is why I recommend going to see it, is that Lelis has brought us to a place where we're re-experiencing how to tell stories. There's a moment in the show that the audience will actually get to leave and visit the space differently. I think it's really important for people now to broaden our perspectives when we're talking about performance now, that we're looking at decolonizing the way performance is presented. And I think this is an opportunity where Lelis Brito and Teatro are shifting the needle.— Harry Waters Jr.‘The Bountiful Table'Mark Hiemenz of St. Louis Park is a singer and church choir director. He recommends a delicious concert: Caritas Vocal Ensemble, an a cappella group of 12, will perform a full menu of songs about food in a concert called “The Bountiful Table.” Concerts are Sat. May 9 at New Branches Building in Minneapolis, Sat. May 16 at Grace Episcopal Church in Minneapolis, and Sun. May 17 at Incarnation Lutheran Church in Shoreview. All concerts are from 3 to 4 p.m. Donations will be accepted for local food shelves.Mark anticipates a performance full of humor and the joy of sharing music together. Mark says: Caritas actually began as one person's response to 9/11, so the group has always sung concerts and partnered with local organizations. For example, these concerts are going to support local food shelves. So Caritas really believes in the power of music to show communities how important it is to be together.— Mark Hiemenz

This week on Dishing It Out, Gary and Gareth sit down with Ciaran Kavanagh from John Kavanagh's, The Gravediggers, one of the most iconic pubs in Ireland.Ciaran shares what it was like growing up in the family pub, pulling pints from the age of 14, before heading off on a culinary journey that took him from Club Med, to the Bahamas and eight years cooking in Italy. He explains how he brought that experience back to Glasnevin, turning the pub's food offering into something seriously special while still keeping it rooted in tradition. The lads dig into the story behind The Gravediggers' famous coddle, why every Dublin family seems to have their own version, and how Anthony Bourdain's visit changed everything, bringing “Bourdainers” from all over the world in search of a pint and a bowl of the good stuff. There's also chat about the Guinness revival, Irish spring rolls and the awkward moment when Gary and Gareth were stood up by a very prolific chef who went to The Gravediggers instead. In this week's Nespresso Dish of the Week, Gary keeps the Italian inspiration going with chicken piccata. Then it's over to your Culinary Conundrums, where the lads answer a question from a young commis chef looking to impress and grow in the kitchen.Keep those questions coming to food@goloudnow.com .

Before the death sentence. Before the backyard graves. Before the "zombie" doctrine.Chad Daybell was a gravedigger in Idaho who claimed the dead spoke to him. This is Part 2 of "The Chosen Ones," our psychological examination of spiritual abuse and religious trauma through the Vallow-Daybell case. Today we analyze Chad Daybell — not just what he did, but how he built the authority to make others believe he spoke for God.Chad Daybell couldn't find significance through normal channels. He wasn't a prophet in the mainstream LDS church. So he built a space where he could be one — through self-published apocalyptic novels, fringe conferences, and online communities like AVOW.He charged for books, charged for speaking appearances, charged for "readings" where he'd tell followers their light ratings and past lives. The more people paid for access to his "visions," the more power he accumulated. Then the beliefs became operational.According to testimony, Chad Daybell taught that some people had been possessed by demons — that they were "zombies" who could only be destroyed, not saved. He kept spreadsheets rating people as light or dark. Everyone rated dark ended up dead.If you've experienced religious narcissism or spiritual abuse from a charismatic leader — you'll recognize how this authority gets built.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Of all the jobs people avoided, feared, or whispered about, the gravedigger stood near the top of the list. Working in quiet corners of churchyards, behind iron fences, or in the shadows of city cemeteries, the gravedigger did work no one else wanted—making room for the dead and handling what came after. But for centuries, this job was a critical part of every community. It wasn't glamorous, and it certainly wasn't clean, but the people who did it kept burial grounds in order, protected public health, and honored the basic dignity of the dead. In this final part of our series on dirty jobs, we're going beneath the surface—literally—to explore the long, hard, and sometimes heartbreaking path of the gravedigger... Send us a textWe are celebrating SXSW 2025 with a feature length film and a narrative short that both deal with topics of death in a very different (and often hilarious) way.Dead Lover is a horror comedy that tells the story of a lonely gravedigger who stinks of dead people so badly, that she is willing to do anything in her power to have (and keep) a lover. We were joined by director/co-writer/actor Grace Glowicki and co-writer Ben Petrie, who describe their "downhill skiing" collaborative writing process, the story behind Grace's unique cockney accent, and as a married couple, where they keep the infamous shovel from the film. Out For Delivery is a short film about Joanna, who is suffering from a terminal illness and opts for assisted death, but her pursuit of a peaceful end-of-life experience is disrupted by unexpected complications. We were joined by director/writer (and return guest!) Chelsea Christer, and star of the film, Deanna Rooney, who explain the unifying connection of comedy, the downside of convenience culture, and their beautiful dynamic as working friends. Follow Dead Lover on IGFollow writer Ben Petrie on IGFollow Out For Delivery on IGFollow director Chelsea Christer on IGFollow actor Deanna Rooney on IGThis episode is co-hosted by John Wildman of Films Gone WildAudio produced by Jeff Hunt of Storied: SFSupport the showThanks for listening and for your support! This conversation grows out of a podcast series that Phill produced late last year called "How the church was sabotaged", in which he reflected upon a 1980s book by the famous Christian thinker and writer Os Guinness. Though published over 40 years ago, Guinness's "The Gravedigger File: Papers on the Subversion of the Modern Church" caught Phill's attention because of its apparent prescience on a number of important cultural issues facing the church today. So, please join us as I "get in on the conversation", and we discuss what's happened to so many modern churches, and think about ways in which we might "push back" in the culture to reveal the Gospel's "plausibility structure" to church and world alike.
