This week on Chart Attack we continue the chart battle theme of last week's Girls Aloud episode with a classic of the genre. A titanic war between an unheralded DJ and a super niche indie star against a pop giant. Yes, it's Sophie Ellis Bextor vs Victoria Beckham and the story of how Spiller's eternal summer anthem ‘Groovejet' spoiled Posh Spice's solo party. Chart battles are never quite so straightforward, though. We'll explore the circumstances around this surprise Number 1 and how Victoria and Dane Bowers' actually-quite-good-y'know Number 2 is unfairly maligned. Elsewhere in summer 2000, we talk the launch of Big Brother, summer club classics, and it's a bumper week for our Corrie queen Gail Platt. Chart Attack is brought to you by Dork. It's hosted by Abigail Firth and Martyn Young and produced by Patrick Gunning. Chart data is sourced from the Official Charts Company. You can follow us or get in touch across socials @chartattackpod or via the Dork accounts @readdork and @dorkradio. Thank you for listening!
In this installment of What's New '23, we are diving into the Sophie Ellis Bextor's latest album Hana. We took a look at the inspiration of the album, songwriting, melody, and musical production. Sophie Ellis Bextor is known for her chart-topping hits like "Murder On The Dancefloor" and "Groovejet". She has captivated audiences with her distinct voice and nostalgic sounds of the 90s electronic music. Our very own Phil Pendlebury had the priviledge of collaborating with Sophie on a remarkable song and he tells us all about it. Tune in and find out the panel's review of Hana. This one is really special!!! It's an honour to have him on board. Please Welcome, Mousse T., who is one of Germany's most prominent musical exports. His award-winning discography demonstrates his innate musicality that shines through on every release, whether it be his chart-topping productions, sublime remixes or self-written songs. Mousse T.'s first step in the music industry was playing keyboards for the relatively under-the-radar band Fun Key B, where he began his experimentation with synth- pop, and funk infused sounds. Hungry for more, Mousse T. was also already forging his solo career, opening his own recording studio and DJing on Hannover's growing club scene. Along with his own productions, Mousse T.'s writing and producing credits read like a who's who of the music industry, having worked with artists such as Roy Ayers, Byron Stingily, Andreya Triana to name a few. With all his hard work solidifying the foundations for his career, he took the plunge in 1993 and launched Peppermint Jam records, a pioneering label still renowned for its unique uplifting house music and melodic acid jazz. By the late 90's Mousse T. was a household name, dominating the charts with releases such as ‘Horny' and Tom Jones' ‘Sex Bomb'. This success was followed by an Ivor-Novello Award, Grammy Award nomination and three studio albums, most recently releasing Where Is The Love in 2018, a charismatic and sophisticated reminder of his gifted abilities. His other recent achievements include appearing as a judge on DSDS (Germany's Got Talent) and producing film soundtracks for a number of German titles. With no signs of slowing down, Mousse T. continues to be one of the most prolific producers in the game, putting his signature shizzle touch on tracks like Mike Dunn ́s „If I can't git down“, Horse Meat Disco ́s „Love if you need it“, Flight Facilities ft. Channel Tres „Lights up“, Selace ́s „Hooked on your lovin ́“ and Davie ́sTestify" „ to Spiller ́s „Groovejet“, as well as releasing his own productions constantly, DJing across the globe with residencies at parties like Glitterbox and continuing to uphold the legacy of his own label, Peppermint Jam. Mousse T. is currently residing on the Glitterbox roster with Colluded Management. His recent gigs include playing at Hi Ibiza, Viper Room Los Angeles, Cavo Paradiso Mykonos, Amnesia Ibiza, Pacha Ibiza, Creamfields Festival, Cocoon Club Frankfurt, Loveparade, Rex Club Paris and Montreux Jazz Festival, with his live band. Whether it's behind the decks or on the keys, with Mousse T. in control the night is guaranteed to be special. We know you will enjoy it!!! This is magnificent! My set on the Glitterbox bus for Defected London at Drumsheds in September 2021. Before me Melvo Baptiste played a great set and like magic a cloudy day opened into the perfect sunny afternoon for my set where by the end I rejoined with Sophie Ellis Bextor to perform Groovejet together one more time after 20 years, a day to remember. Unfortunately her microphone was connected to a different mixer so on this recording you won't hear her voice but just the backing vocals.
Our guest today is one Finley Martin. He enjoys every aspect of making music – from songwriting, to performing live, to engineering and production. He primarily plays bass and guitar, but he's been known to add other instruments (keys, drums, field recordings) when he's recording at home. Finley was born and raised in Prince Edward Island, Canada, but has been based in the DC area since 1998.In addition to his solo work, he's played with a number of area bands since then:Gist – 1999 to present (post-punk)The Chance – 2008 to 2010 (art rock)RagnaPOP! – 2014 to present (pop punk)Oppo – 2014 to present (indie rock)GrooveJet – 2015 to present (Latin, jazz, funk, RnB)These bands are representative of his broad musical tastes and interests. If you heard them in one night, you would journey through angular vs. melodic post-punk, art core, horn-heavy funk, latin jazz, uke-tinged pop punk and indie rock. Finley's solo work fuses these influences with Americana and folk stylings, often drawing on the Celtic storytelling and kitchen parties from his childhood. He creates reflective songs—at times quiet, acoustic, melody-driven ballads, but equally often heavier, driving barn burners, making use of the loop pedal to develop multi-layered soundscapes. His songs often explore issues that reflect life in the 21st century such as social inequality, gun violence, climate degradation, and technological encroachment. For our conversation today, we are going to be discussing The Tragically Hip's second studio album titled Road Apples, which was released back on February 15, 1991. It was their first album to reach #1 in Canada, and the album has been certified Diamond as well. Incidentally, earlier this year. Road Apples is receiving some deluxe treatment, to celebrate its 30th Anniversary. Enjoy the conversation!

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In conversation with his long-time friend Cristiano Spiller, Luca talks about the sound of objects, the role of music in design and food, and the true meaning of success.
The party begins with two classic dance tracks from Groovejet and Calvin Harris. Then continues on with some banging new Bass House and Tech House tracks from such artists as Tchami, Redux Saints, Duke Dumont, Monkeye, Cloonee, and more. Hope you enjoy it. Mahalo for listening!

The first time Groovejet was played? It was March 1999 I was going to the Winter Music Conference in Miami for the second time, my flight was in the early morning and I wanted to stay awake until it was time to leave, so went in my studio and I sampled a previously unreleased Tom Moulton version of Carol Williams “Love is You” that I had just bought on a Salsoul release called “12" Gold Master Series”. I played with those samples for an hour or so and came up with this instrumental track, I quickly burned 1 copy into a CD and ran to the airport. When I landed in Miami my old friend Boris Dlugosch came to pick me up at the airport with a nice rented cabriolet and drove me to my (shitty) hotel in South Beach. While on the road he asked me if I had some new music and I put the CD on the car radio but we kept talking about things and I forgot the CD there. Later that day he was playing along with a great lineup in a club called “Groove Jet” and he invited me to go, when I arrived there people I didn't even know ran to me asking about my new record, I didn't understand what they were talking about until Boris told me he had played that demo and that the people went nuts. That's how the story began for the record that changed my life and that's why I decided to call it Groovejet, also Boris suggested calling the EP “Mighty Miami EP”. I always regretted arriving late that night and missing that special moment when it was played for the first time, I wish I was in that dancefloor but… Incredibly enough, 10 years later a friend of Boris told him that he was there that night and that he recorded the whole set from the middle of the dancefloor using the internal microphone of a MINIDISK WALKMAN. As the room wasn't that big the recording is somehow even better than a proper direct one because you can hear people's reactions to each record, you can even hear people asking him what the record was. The whole set is amazing and an accurate portrait of the best tracks of that season in my opinion. So here it is: Boris Dlugosch live at Groove Jet, March 16th, 1999.

SPIXMIX 03 - Between 1995 and 2000 I was the resident DJ at House Nation, a sunday night party in Jesolo that was a fixed spot for all the djs and promoters of the area, plus of course all tireless clubbers ending there their long weekend. After paying my dues for 5 years in other smaller clubs in Venice, it was the first residency that gave me the opportunity to play alongside some of the biggest names of the italian and international scene. I would open the night and play for a few hours until the dj guest or the host Angelino would take over. It's Angelino and Ricky Volpe that I have to thank for this opportunity, they believed in me when no one else did. In this recording I open the night for one of the best italian house djs of all time: Massimino Lippoli. You can hear many (too many) MCs, it was a common thing at the time, I can hear 4 different ones but Moony unfortunately is not one of them, she started her career as a vocalist there. This and other recordings of House Nation exist thanks to Nicola Gardin who was the light and tech-guy of the club. I have worked in many other clubs but I have never found a rock like him, when he was there you would always find the dj booth in order and he would meticulously record every night on tape.

I started buying disco and jazz funk records soon after I started djing in 1990, but my first dj mixes were mainly made of dance and house music, often with disco influences and samples but never original versions. This is the first time I recorded a mixtape made of only original funk and disco tunes for my friends, i named it "Privè" as in northen italy during those years disco was a genre played in the smaller rooms of trendy clubs. Enjoy :)

Trance-Mission Episode 03 (Ride the Wave) All sine waves are characterized by their frequency, amplitude and phase.. Let's alter all those parameters... Continuing my Trance-Mission. Last episode left us just “As the Rush Came”, this one is all about riding that metaphorical and physical sine wave.. Come and Ride it with Me.. Waves are all around us, light waves, sound waves, sub-atomic quantum waves and also liquid waves of course. There are no real difference in the physics of the surfing wave, the sound wave and the chemical wave, they are all encompassing.. One cannot fight the wave, one has to accept the highs, the lows, surrender to the overwhelming phenomena or emotion. Fight it and you fall into the abyss, ride it and you come back on top ready for the next one.. Although we are in Tranceland, I tried to keep it in my beloved Trouse.. If I did my selection right, at the end of this journey, you will have discovered some great tunes, be surprised by some edgier, harder ones, recognized some old club favourites, taken from one track you love to one you are not sure of, but you will have ridden that Wave and landed with a satisfactory smile on the other side of the tunnel.. At least this was my intent! Current tunes or 2014 remixes of tracks you know very well. Some commercial, some less, some chilled, some pure club-dance. Some dark and heavy , some as warm as the summer sun. Embark on a musical helter-skelter, ride the wave high and low and look at this new episode as a whole journey, do not take a tune by tune attitude, because it will not work. Embrace the total Wave… I will try to set the mood for you: this is what a DJ would play in a boy’s club past-midnight when the chase, the hunt and the urge has taken them over... Playlist: Intro Come with Me on the Beach. Xtian, Martin Solveig 2014 We’re All We Need (16 Bit Lolitas Remix vs Extended Mix). Above & Beyond feat. Ira, 8Kays feat John Julius Knight 2014 Let Go (Going Deeper Remix). Julie Thompson, Super8 & Tab 2014 Need 2 Know (Richard Earnshaw Remix Xtian Bridge vs. Est8 Remix). State Unknown feat. Cassandra London 2014 Sunlight (Tommy Mc Remix Bootleg) [Xtian Short Edit]. The Magician Feat Years & Years 2014 I Lift My Hands (Club Mix). David Penn, Rober Gaez, Rae 2014 Discopolis (Shakedown Remix)[Xtian shifted Down Turn Me On Edit]. Freemasons 2014 Only Child (Original Mix vs. Roddy Reynaert Remix) [Xtian Edit]. Sophie Ellis-Bextor, DedRekoning 2014 Only Child (Pearon & Hirst Remix). DedRekoning feat. Sophie Ellis-Bextor, 2014 Heartbreak (Make Me a Dancer) (2014 Extended Mix)]. Freemasons, Sophie Ellis-Bextor 2014 Shirahama (Shirama Original Mix) [Xtian Reach Out to Charlie Edit]. Bee Hunter, Marc Evans 2014 We’re All We Need (Spada Remix). Above & Beyond feat. Zoe Johnston Highlights: “We’re All We Need”, new collaboration between A&B and the fantastic vocalist Zoe Johnston. Not quite at the level of the fantastic Love is not Enough, which is one of my all time favourite Trance track but still very, very good and top 5 trance track of 2014. I almost called the set “We’re all we need” as it could have been a very fitting title. “Don’t Stop” and “After Glow” to bring a dark sexy under-current ( to continue the nautical analogy). Both tracks straight out an ADE 2014 compilation called Intricate Records Amsterdam 2014 which you should by.. I actually had “Don’t Stop”, followed by “Till I Come” followed by”Afterglow”.. I was very pleased oh-not-so subtle riddle.. But it was totally gratuitous and the 3 tracks were keeping the set tempo too slow for far too long. “Let Go” a little progressive trance, trousy number with another great vocalist Julie Thompson. “Need 2 Know” I wanted to go back to this track, one of the best of 2014 to showcase the East8 Remix, which even though not as good as the Earnshaw one, presents a different dimension to the State Unknow jam. “Sunlight” a Tommy MC soundcloud bootleg.. Does not get more commercial than this but needed to lighten the mood and start bringing some fun into the mix. You will sing-a-long.. Going darker and harder with David Penn/Rae’s “I Lift My Hands”. Love Rae by far the best female DJ/Producer around. Straight onto an old French house favourite of mine “Discopolis” ( straight men if you have never seen the video clip, search for it..). The Freemsasons remix fitting perfectly the mood I wanted the set to be by now.. Heavy but still clubby. From there embarking on a little Sophie Ellis-Bextor medley. Love her since GrooveJet times! I recently saw a video of a show she did live accapella and then with a band in London.. Sophie rocks. She is beautiful well spoken, elegant and immensely talented. Starting with “Only Child”, her new Dec 2014 release straight onto another Freemasons remix of Heartbreak (Make Me a Dancer).. By now, you have successfully ridden the Wave! I had another go at using the Marc Evans vocals on a Trance track with “Shirahama”, definitively not as good as my previous attempt but I was bringing the set home and I was in the moment, waiting to send a message of Love consideering the recent event in Paris. Closing the loop with another remix of “We’re All We Need”.. track of the set.. I will see what the community makes of this Episode. I hope you give it a chance to grow on you. DO NOT fight the wave. Embrace it! A final word on the recent event in my country. I thought of doing a set to celebrate freedom of expression but could not find the right metal place to build it. Therefore just a few words, yes, JeSuisCharlie and so should you all be, because freedom of expression is an indisputable foundation of the Human Rights.. A bientôt! Xtian

This month's session is very special, It's the final edition of the Sky Sessions. Seventeen episodes later with more than 8000 downloads from all around the world, it's been a good 18 months of fun. The Sky Sessions has been very popular as my audience grew a lot lately and many of you were not able anylonger to download my mixes due to internet bandwidth restrictions impose by Podomatic's regular membership. I'm sorry to say (and it breaks my heart) but this will be the last Sky Session podcast. It's now time for me to pursue other projects but I'm still available for hire and will continue to play music part time. I want also to give my regards to the people who tried to support me in order to make these podcasts possible. Before I leave, I wanna answer a question I have received from a listener: Where did I take the cover pictures of my podcasts? Well, they were all taken between a few days or weeks before the podcast has aired with the use of my camera phone from places I have visit and inspired me. Some of those locations are in Canada, USA, Netherlands, Brazil, Mexico and for this month's podcast, the Dominican Republic. For this very last episode, I have prepared an extended set of some of the most relaxing tunes for you to enjoy with a drink on a beautiful beach. Enjoy, take care and thank you so much for listening. DJ GrooveJet in the Mix! Thank you all for downloading my episodes. Sorry for the lateness of this months's episode. Podomatic has capped the amount of internet traffic to 15 GB, it was attained more than a week before releasing my next podcast. In order for everyone to be able to download the podcasts and without going over my allocated bandwidth, I had to reduce the duration time of this month's session a few minutes so that it won't affect the sound quality. I also had to remove 2 previous episodes from the home page. Nevertheless, enjoy my favorite selection of Ambient and Chillout songs of the New Year! Don't forget to comment and donate via PayPal in order to help me with the cost of expanding the internet bandwidth. Enjoy!
