I also share an exciting announcement in this episode about a special opportunity to work with me 1:1 through my creative coaching container, launching in January 2024. The self-help industry is guilty of telling people they are limitless and perpetuating the concept that you can do and be anything. It's a well meaning concept to try and help people see they are capable of more, which I agree with, but the sentiment is often a great disservice. Sure, you can go do anything and everything, but you won't do many of those things well. You are designed for some specific things. ⁣ ⁣ The great news is they will fit your innate desires and abilities. Imagine taking all the animals in Africa and dumping them on the open savannah. How will they fare? The monkeys and crocodiles and hippos and pythons and parrots will soon die. Or dump them all into the trees. How will the elephants and lions and gazelles do? You get the point. Yet we as humans are expected to just be ok in all the normal structures of our environment. It doesn't work, and most all of us spend a lot of our days in environments and circumstances that are greatly limiting us and don't cater to our unique makeup.⁣ ⁣ This is my wrap up on my series with Andre Sólo and the message in his book, "Sensitive: The Hidden Power of the Highly Sensitive Person in a Loud, Fast, Too-Much World." Some of you are HSPs, as I've realized I am. But all of you have sensitivities. All of you. And chances are you are blind to them or are just trying to grit your teeth and plow through your life. You can. But you won't be at your best. You'll be doing yourself a disservice. Further, you'll be limiting the service you can bring to others. ⁣ ⁣ Walk with me a minute in looking at how to better curate and design your world for your success.⁣ ⁣ June 15-16 of 2023 I'll be in Dallas to attend and speak at the Ziglar coach summit. We've been unpacking issues of sensitivity. I want to again highlight that the only people who do not have sensitivities are psychopaths. So if you are not a psychopath, this show is for you. You do have some sensitivities and if you are unaware and if you don't work to manage them, they will erode you, like termites. The point here is not being a victim. Not being fragile. It's about being self-aware of your unique propensities so you can manage and leverage them. ⁣ ⁣ This is part 3 on the message from Andre Sólo in his new book, "Sensitive: The Hidden Power of the Highly Sensitive Person in a Loud, Fast, Too-Much World." Andre is the force behind Sensitive Refuge (sensitiverefuge.com), the world's largest website for sensitive people. In this show I invited Broadway and big screen star Renée Marino to join me and discuss this topic.⁣ ⁣ Because, right after posting my first episode with Andre, Renée texted me saying, “I'm Listening to your podcast about HSP... man.. this is me 100%!!!!” I had no idea. This episode is us unpacking our realizations of not just being sensitive, but in our case, tipping over into being HSPs, highly sensitive people. But again, this isn't a handicap, unless it goes unchecked. It can be a superpower if properly leveraged. Again though, you have sensitivities, and I believe you'll hear in this episode how you can better manage them to be more at peace and get more, valuable productivity out of yourself and in the areas you are more attune to in your sensitivities. ⁣ ⁣ June 15-16 of 2023 I'll be in Dallas to attend and speak at the Ziglar coach summit. While it's not widely understood by the public, sensitivity is an essential human trait. In this episode I want sensitive people to hear how an HSP…highly sensitive person…curates their life to find more peace and wholeness. I was highly interested in this, as I'm new to understanding, I'm an HSP, and I'm working to reorient my life, with grace, to help me be more at peace, and from this, be more at peace with others and the world around me. ⁣ ⁣ I'm back with Andre Sólo, the force behind Sensitive Refuge, the world's largest website for sensitive people, and the co-author of "Sensitive: The Hidden Power of the Highly Sensitive Person in a Loud, Fast, Too-Much World." Andre is an author, researcher, and speaker, and a recognized expert and passionate advocate for sensitive people.⁣ ⁣ Here we walk through his Values & Habits and as you'll hear, most are configured to support Andre's sensitivities. Remember from our first talk together in the May 17 episode, Sensitive does not mean fragile, or delicate. Sensitive means; quick to detect or respond to slight changes, signals, or influences. And that means externally and internally. ⁣ ⁣ Spiritually Andre finds more sensitive people crave meaning from life and may be more prone to pursuits of spirituality. Similarly, they seek out deep, meaningful relationships, and Andre attests to this for himself. And while we didn't discuss it, I'm betting more sensitive people have fewer, but deeper relationships than the norm. I'll have to ask him about that. Regarding health and wellness Andre said he doesn't live up to his own values here, but seeks out Whole Foods and practices yoga. He admits he's an emotional eater. Regarding mental health he of course guards against overstimulation. This is a big aspect I'm getting from this topic, as I've always struggled with overstimulation but just gritted my teeth and figured it's my problem. While I'm not taking the concept to opt out of everything, I am more in mind to budget how much and giving myself recovery time. This and more in the episode. ⁣ ⁣ June 15-16 of 2023 I'll be in Dallas to attend and speak at the Ziglar coach summit. Here is my hope for this show…that a lot of you, especially those of you who like me, were unaware of your sensitivities, will find comfort and understanding in areas of your life you struggle. Introvert, extrovert, macho man, whatever you think you are. You'll find some grace for yourself, and some equipping of how to better manage your life to find more peace and success. ⁣ ⁣ Sensitive does not mean fragile, or delicate. Sensitive means; quick to detect or respond to slight changes, signals, or influences. Think of it this way; a military fighter jet is incredibly sensitive to every nuance, detecting the slightest problem or change and alerting the pilot and ground crews. They cost from $60 to $130 million. A tank on the other hand does not require such sensitivity and only costs around $10 million. They both have different, valuable uses. ⁣ Speaking of the military, the special forces personnel are actually trained to become highly sensitive to everything. ⁣ ⁣ This is my preface to informing you that while every human is on the scale of being more or less sensitive to the outside world, and to their own inner world, about 30% of you listening will tip over into being a "highly sensitive person," thought to have an increased or deeper central nervous system sensitivity to physical, emotional, or social stimuli. And friends, the kicker here is that I...am an HSP. I have been all my life, but I've masked it, grit my teeth, and just negatively judged myself for being intolerant. I'm thrilled about this message. ⁣ ⁣ My guest to break down the walls on this issue is Andre Sólo, the force behind Sensitive Refuge (sensitiverefuge.com), the world's largest website for sensitive people, and Andre is the co-author of "Sensitive: The Hidden Power of the Highly Sensitive Person in a Loud, Fast, Too-Much World." I really encourage everyone to listen to this message, as I think you'll find relevance for yourself, and others in your life. ⁣ ⁣ June 15-16 of 2023 I'll be in Dallas to attend and speak at the Ziglar coach summit. Being a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) is a fairly new identifier to describe anyone who is highly responsive to their environment. This high responsiveness can appear in a variety of ways and different arenas of our lives - physically, emotionally, in relationships, simply going about our days and interacting with the world around us. In 1996, American clinical research psychologist Dr. Elaine Aron wrote her seminal book The Highly Sensitive Person: How to Thrive in a World That Overwhelms You, and it was in this book that term HSP was coined. Author Jenn Granneman joins me to talk about her new book on this topic of HSP, a book that includes new research that furthers supports Dr. Aron's findings, as well as exploring history revealing that this gift has always been with us, we just didn't identify it until recently, and welcoming in specific insights and tools to elevate this awesome gift that can indeed deep the quality of our entire life. Jenn Granneman's book, who she co-authored with Andre Sólo, Sensitive: The Hidden Power of the Highly Sensitive Person in a Loud, Fast, Too-Much World was released on February 28, 2023, and quickly became a bestseller in the category of Popular Psychology Studies and was recently chosen by Amazon's editor's as the Editor's Pick for Non-Fiction. Today she joins me to talk about what HSP is, the misconceptions, how being HSP is actually a source of strength, how to approach relationships and the work place as well as talking about why she hopes this book starts a Sensitive Revolution. ~Explore the book: Sensitive: The Hidden Power of the Highly Sensitive Person in a Loud, Fast, Too-Much World by Jenn Granneman and Andre Sólo~ Explore Jenn Granneman's websites on HSP and Introversion below, as well as other links you might be interested in: Sensitive Refuge, blog centered on the topic of thriving as an HSP Recent post: 27 Things You Do Because You're a Highly Sensitive Person Jenn Granneman on IG: @jenngranneman Introvert, Dear, blog centered on the topic of thriving as an Intovert The Secret Lives of Introverts: Inside Our Hidden World, book episode #171: The Secret Lives of Introverts, my conversation with the author Jenn Granneman: The Simple Sophisticate podcast Podcast Episodes you might be interested in: episode #44: The Many Gifts of Being HSP episode #315: Being in Love, Being HSP and Being at Peace with Ourselves and the One We Love https://www.instagram.com/p/CsHX9A-ue3i/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA== ~Explore more episodes of The Simple Sophisticate podcast

What's the Difference Between an Highly Sensitive Person and an Empath?

In this episode of the Cosmic Tea Podcast I break down EXACTLY what the difference is between a highly sensitive person (HSP) and an empath. HSPs are born with the SERT gene that gives them the ability to process information deeply. This is part of our brain chemistry and is not something we can change. This is a beautiful way to experience the world and also makes us susceptible to overstimulation. Empaths tend to have experienced childhood trauma that forced them to become more sensitive to the energies of the people around them. Once this necessity to read energy has been activated, it allows us to run energy to and through us like a radio receiver. Empaths can pick up the energetic channel of places, people, plants, animals and so much more. Have a listen and let me know which trait you feel most connected to, or if like me you are both! Being a sensitive person can often feel overwhelming, especially in today's fast-paced, hyper-connected world. And these challenges are frequently compounded by the many misconceptions that people have about sensitivity as a trait. As a sensitive person himself, our guest today, Andre Sólo, is deeply familiar with these challenges and has spent the better part of his career dedicated to shedding light on what it truly means to be a highly sensitive person (HSP) and what we all need to understand better about sensitivity. Through his work and new book, Andre is making profound contributions to those of us who identify as sensitive (even if we don't know it yet). He is the co-founder of the website, Highly Sensitive Refuge, the world's largest online community for sensitive people, and recently co-authored the extremely helpful book The Hidden Power of the Highly Sensitive Person in a Loud, Fast, Too-Much World. Andre is also a researcher and speaker and serves as Chief Make-It-Happen Officer of Introvert, Dear, a supportive community and resource for introverted and sensitive individuals alike.  Tuning in today, you'll learn all about what it means to be a sensitive individual, including why HSPs tend to be creative, empathetic, and highly conscientious, and why it's so easy for them to become overstimulated. Andre goes on to unpack some of the problematic messaging that society regularly gives to sensitive boys and girls, and how this can result in people suppressing and hiding their sensitivity, rather than embracing it as one of their greatest strengths. Our conversation also explores how sensitive children are impacted by their upbringing and environment, and why the best thing you can do as the parent of a sensitive child is to accept and encourage them just as they are. Today's episode is filled with fascinating insights into what it means to move through the world as a sensitive person and provides a helpful guide for what we can do to better understand and support sensitive individuals, allowing them to embrace and leverage their unique superpowers. As a highly sensitive person myself, I'm grateful to Andre for his groundbreaking work in this field. To learn more about this deeply human trait, and how it can shape a person's entire identity, be sure to tune in for our conversation with Andre Sólo!   Key Highlights From This Episode:  Understanding the traits of a highly sensitive person (HSP), and the misconceptions that many people have about sensitive people. You're too sensitive. You're overreacting. Grow a thicker skin. You take everything so personally. We hear these comments all too often. There's no denying sensitivity is surrounded by stigma. We discourage it in our children, judge it in our peers, and ultimately weaponize it in our relationships with colleagues and family members. While it's not widely understood by the public, sensitivity is an essential human trait. In fact, nearly 1 in 3 people are highly sensitive individuals, and without them, we would not have the theory of evolution, the Declaration of Independence, or Netflix.  Jenn Granneman and Andre Sólo are the force behind the world's largest online communities for sensitive people and introverts, Sensitive Refuge and Introvert, Dear. And they're on a mission to break the negative stigma surrounding sensitivity in their forthcoming book, SENSITIVE (on sale 2/28), unveiling the hidden power of highly sensitive people (HSPs) in our loud, fast, and too-much world. Weaving together actionable advice, relatable anecdotes, and the latest scientific research, SENSITIVE shows readers how leaning into their sensitivity can unlock a powerful “boost effect” to launch them ahead in life. Presenting the empowering idea that sensitivity gives you access to five distinct gifts, Granneman and Sólo offers the tools and insights you need to embrace this undervalued strength and leverage it across the most important areas of your life. In this episode Jenn is revealing: - A clear picture of what it really means to be sensitive and what strengths sensitive people bring to the world - What makes the sensitive brain different — and how it's wired to go deep - How the needs of sensitive people differ from those of less sensitive people and people with autism  - How to transform one of the misunderstood gifts of sensitive people—empathy into a source of world-changing strength - The common misconceptions about sensitive children—and their secret advantage - The powerful traits of sensitive leaders, who are often the most effective leaders of all Are you highly sensitive? ABOUT THE BOOK: A paradigm-shifting look at a long-undervalued yet hugely beneficial personality trait, from the creators of the world's largest community for highly sensitive people   “Don't be so sensitive!” Everyone has a sensitive side, but nearly 1 in 3 people have the genes to be more sensitive than others—both physically and emotionally. These are the people who pause before speaking and think before acting; they tune into subtle details and make connections that others miss. They tend to be intelligent, big-hearted, and wonderfully creative; they are wired to go deep, yet society tells them to hide the very sensitivity that makes them this way. These are the world's “highly sensitivepeople,” and Sensitive is the book that champions them. By the creators of the world's largest community for sensitive people, Sensitive teaches us how to unlock the potential in this undervalued strength and leverage it across the most important areas of our lives: in friendships and relationships, the workplace, leadership, and parenting. Through fascinating research and expert storytelling, Jenn Granneman and Andre Sólo show readers that the way to thrive as a sensitive person is not to hide their sensitivity, but to embrace it—and they demonstrate how to do that in each area of life. Weaving together actionable advice, relatable anecdotes, and the latest scientific research, Sensitive shows readers how leaning in to their sensitivity unlocks a powerful “boost effect” to launch them ahead in life. It hands them the tools and insights they need to thrive as a sensitive person in a loud, fast, too-much world. A powerfully validating, destigmatizing, and practical book, Sensitive plants a gently fluttering flag in the ground for sensitivepeople everywhere. This inspiring book has the power to change—once and for all—how we see sensitive people, and how they see themselves. ABOUT THE AUTHORS: Jenn Granneman and Andre Sólo are the force behind the world's largest online communities for sensitive people and introverts, Sensitive Refuge and Introvert, Dear. Granneman is also the author of The Secret Lives of Introverts, and has been featured in HuffPost, The Washington Post, the BBC, Oprah Daily, BuzzFeed, Glamour, and more. Sólo has been featured in HuffPost, The Washington Post, Vogue, MSNBC, The Telegraph, and numerous podcasts. Both are regular contributors to Psychology Today and Forbes.
