Abhishek Singh is a Ph.D. student at MIT Media Lab. His research interests include collective intelligence, self-organization, and decentralized machine learning. The central question guiding his research is --- how can we (algorithmically) engineer adaptive networks to build anti-fragile systems? He has co-authored multiple papers and built systems in machine learning, data privacy, and distributed computing. Before joining MIT, Abhishek worked with Cisco for 2 years where he did research in AutoML and Machine Learning for systems.An AbstractThe remarkable scaling of AI models has unlocked unprecedented capabilities in text and image generation, raising the question: why hasn't healthcare seen similar breakthroughs? Today, we're talking about wildfires and some innovative technology to prevent them. Climate change-related heat, drought, and what's called thirsty atmospheric conditions increase the risks that come with wildfires. These fires have a real impact – they take human lives, create lasting respiratory health problems, destroy billions of dollars of property, and contribute significantly to global carbon emissions. The 2023 fire in Canada that burned an area the size of North Dakota emitted more carbon in five months than Russia or Japan emitted from fossil fuels in all of 2022. It should be noted, of course, that forests reabsorb carbon as they regrow, but still, their burning at that scale is a huge problem. Billions of dollars are being invested every year to prevent and limit wildfires, and I was excited to connect with a leading startup in this space to learn about what's working and what challenges need to be solved. Today's guest is Abhishek Singh, Co-Founder & CEO of AiDash, a company using satellites to help utility companies prevent powerline-cased fires. We talk about the problem of climate-related wildfires, the origin of AiDash, how their technology works, who's using it, how they expect to contribute to fire mitigation, what else is needed, and much more. Smokey the Bear says only you can prevent wildfires, but maybe it's only you, thousands of satellites, AI and computer vision, and a growing ecosystem of technology companies and forest management professionals. Indian artist Abhishek Singh's comic books have sold more than half a million copies and been translated into Italian, Spanish, French and English. His interpretation of the Indian myth, Krishna: A Journey Within, was the first graphic novel by an Indian writer and artist to be published in American comic book history. Abhishek has long included environmental themes in his work, but after travelling round the mountains and forests of India, and spending time with elephants in particular, he realised that most mythic tales concern kings and queens and battles, all about humans and human activity. He decided it was time to create a new non-human mythology, one which centres on our vulnerable environment and the animals who live within it. Paul Waters joins him in Delhi as he paints one of his pictures for his new graphic novel The Hymns of Medhini.

Howdy, y'all, and welcome to The Cyber Ranch Podcast! Our guest is Adam Bateman, CEO and Co-Founder at Push Security, based in the UK. Another of our cyber friends from across the pond! Is a former director at the security consultancy MWR who were renowned in the industry for their specialist research and red team capability. Adam started off as a red teamer himself, and then went on to build and lead the detection and response division of MWR, where they specialized in defending organizations against state-sponsored attacks. Adam came up in the world of offensive security, and it shows in his thinking. He co-founded Push to protect SaaS-native companies, whose data resides in a bazillion places, protected by a bazillion identities. Or maybe just by SSO. But probably a mix. ½ a bazillion known SaaS apps using SSO and another ½ a bazillion using who knows what identity methods? After our first chat with Adam, Allan really got to thinking about this idea we bandy about that “identity is the new perimeter!” Is that the right model? Is it a complete model? Are there better models to describe our SaaS sprawl security problem? Allan posted his ideas on LinkedIn and LinkedIn got very vigorously into the conversation. We thought Adam and Allan could record a show and hash some of these concepts out, and Adam agreed, so here we are! In one sense, vulnerable Internet-facing credentials have ALWAYS been a problem. In other words, Identity is not the new perimeter, but is a rather old one. What are your thoughts? What is happening in the wild? What do the attacks actually look like? Allan Alford Consulting subscribes to over twenty SaaS applications, and Allan is literally a one-man company. How many SaaS apps are used by the average enterprise? What percentage of those are in the SSO fold? This is truly scary. How do we get everything behind SSO? How do we get SSO locked down and secure? What's our best possible world? Everything behind SSO with a Yubikey? Next best is everything behind SSO with Smartphone MFA app? Back to this perimeter thing: J. David Christensen agrees with the idea that identity is not a new perimeter. He says it has always been THE perimeter! Jamir Fisher agreed. Robert Mithcell points out that if and identity provider can be compromised, then identity is the M&M defense after all (hard shell, soft center). Our friend Abhishek Singh says authZ and authN combine to form Zero Trust. Once you have zero trust, he says, like it or lump it, identity becomes the attack surface. this week we're reading KRISHNA: A JOURNEY WITHIN - by Abhishek Singh. Singh is Indian graphic novelist acclaimed for his unique interpretations of myths and ancient philosophies - who first made his mark for the acclaimed series Ramayana 3392. AND he was first Indian comics artist published in mainstream American comics. Singh's 2012 comics interpretation of the Lord Krishna was a searing, human portrayal of one of the great Hindi deities. To many in the west he became a popular god in the 60s, but to most folks from the subcontinent, he is but one of many reincarnations of the God Vishnu the creator. In an almost poetic, sweeping series of paintings Singh takes us through key moments of Krishna's life - from a little boy stealing ghee, to defeating his evil uncle, to his courtship with Radha, and to key moments from the epic feudal war that makes up both the Mahabharata and the Bhagavad Gita - two of Hinduisms most sacred texts. In 2021 alone, the US experienced 15+ weather/climate disaster events with damages exceeding $1 billion. Previously, we have explored various aspects of the ways data science and machine learning intertwine with natural events - from weather prediction, to the impact of climate change on extreme phenomena and measuring the impact of disaster relief. AiDash, however, is aiming at something different: helping utility and energy companies as well as governments and cities manage the impact of natural disasters, including storms and wildfires. You can also check out our other episodes on Sikkim by Surya Raju and by Sandy and Vyjay- Utsav and his partner head off from Gangtok towards their itinerary of Lachen, Chopta valley and Gurdongmar lake.- It is highly advised that you hire a driver to drive you around as driving in the state is quite challenging given the weather conditions and the roads.- Utsav spends his time in Lachen, enjoying the shoulder season with no tourists, interacting with locals as well as exploring the local monasteries.- Make a quick trip to Chopta valley from Lachen - the valley gives a beautiful view of the snowcapped mountains and the river (depending on the time of the year).- Utsav's trip to Gurdongmar was cut short due to the weather, since the army recommended to avoid travelling during severe weather conditions.- On the way back, Utsav makes a stop at a Gurudwara to enjoy some good conversations and a hearty langar (meal in the community kitchen).- Utsav also learns about the legend of Gurudongmar, about how Guru Nanak is believed to have traveled here and how a portion of the river never freezes at the point where the Guru hit his staff ('Dong' in Punjabi, 'Maar' is hit). There is also a legend about the Buddhist saint Padmasambhava with a similar story, hence the lake is considered sacred by both Sikhs and Buddhists. (Erroneously mentioned as "Sikhs and Hindus" on the podcast)- After spending a day at Lachen, Utsav decides to move base to a small village called Dzongu and spend some time absorbing the slow life of the village.- Slow travelling gives one the opportunity to live like a local and enjoy some authentic experiences, without having to rush from point to point.- This includes enjoying some wholesome organic food (Sikkim is the first officially organic state in India), local beers and Sikkimese hospitality in general.- Utsav also shares some interesting tidbits about the colourful prayer flags in Sikkim and their significance.- Try to hire a local tour guide driver, as they have the best network in the area (which is often useful) and also helps boost the local economy.
