Was L. Ron Hubbard just a con artist, or was he something much darker? We'll dig into the wild connections between Scientology and the occult, Hubbard's obsession with Aleister Crowley, his creepy rituals with Satanist rocket scientist Jack Parsons, and even his the accusation by his own son that he though he was the Antichrist.IN THIS EPISODE: The creator of Scientology, L. Ron Hubbard, was so fascinated by the occult, he believed he was the actual devil himself… and was even upset when his own son turned out to not be the antichrist. (The Devil L. Ron Hubbard) *** Scientology is already scary and mysterious – which may not be surprising once you learn how much black magic had to do with its creation. (Scientology and the Occult) *** A house in the Altamaha River Swamp in Georgia becomes darker and more dangerous than the swamp itself. (A Terrifying Haunting in Georgia) *** Was a well known UFOlogist murdered shortly before a scheduled speech he was about to give? (The Bleached Computer of a UFO Researcher) *** Some believe we all have a guardian angel watching over us. One infamous yet respected witch hunter many years ago wrote that we all – each one of us – have a personal demon. And many people believed him. (The Demon Witch Hunter) *** For some time now, Area 51 has been seen as ground zero for conspiracies and government coverups. However, a plot of land in Utah has started to attract much of the same kind of attention. Welcome to Dugway – also known as Area 52. Back in 1955, a quiet Kentucky farmhouse became ground zero for one of the wildest alien encounter stories ever—complete with glowing-eyed creatures, a shotgun standoff, and a mystery that still baffles skeptics today.IN THIS EPISODE: It's considered one of the most bizarre and convincing extraterrestrial events ever reported… we'll look at the alien encounter in 1955's Hopkinsville, Kentucky that was experienced by two terrified families. (The Hopkinsville Encounter) *** In the deep jungles of the Congo, natives tell of a giant creature that, once described, sounds exactly like a long-necked dinosaur. But how could this be? And is it pure legend? Perhaps not, as one noted biologist from the area saw it with his own eyes and reported it. We'll look at the supposed real sighting of Mokele-Mbembe, the living dinosaur of the Congo! (Dinosaur Observed In The Congo) *** Running a club during prohibition was extremely lucrative… and extremely dangerous, as one Theodore Lakoff would've learned… had he been awake when he was murdered. (The Mysterious Death of Theodore Lakoff) *** Benjamin Franklin was known not just as one of the father's of the United States of America, but also as an inventor, a womanizer, and a man with a bit of an ornery streak in him – as is evidenced by a series of letters he wrote to the New England Courant, where he pretended to be a woman. (Who Was Mrs. Silence Dogood?) *** The internet is a vital part of modern life. Without web access, all kinds of businesses and jobs would be unable to function. So, as you can imagine, there are plenty of people who would love to see the internet crumble. And many have tried. (Taking Down The World Wide Web) *** In 1983 sightings poured in from people on the California coast who claim they saw a sea monster. What valuable lessons can new real estate agents learn from the success stories of two young, top-producing agents?   In this episode of the Real Estate Excellence podcast, host Tracy Hayes sits down with Hannah Flakus and Madison Yates, two young and successful real estate agents from Exit One Stop Realty. Despite their brief careers in the medical field, both Hannah and Madison have quickly made a name for themselves in the real estate industry. Throughout the conversation, they share their experiences, challenges, and the strategies that have helped them achieve success at such a young age. From the importance of stepping out of your comfort zone to the value of building genuine relationships with clients, Hannah and Madison offer valuable insights for new agents looking to make their mark in the competitive world of real estate.   Hannah Flakus, REALTOR® at EXIT 1 Stop Realty in Jacksonville, FL, has been a resident of the First Coast for 20 years and counting. She knows the ins and outs of the city she loves and would be honored to share this with you!   Madison Yates, REALTOR® with EXIT 1 Stop Realty in Jacksonville, Florida, has lived in Jacksonville her entire life. She has had the privilege of watching this area that she loves turn into the booming and lively city that it is today. Her knowledge of and experience in Northeast Florida will allow her to assist all her customers to find exactly what they are looking for! [00:00:00 - 00:10:59] From Medical Field to Real Estate Rookies - Both Hannah and Madison briefly worked in the medical field before transitioning to real estate - Madison envisioned herself as a physician's assistant but was drawn to the idea of a non-conventional career in real estate - Hannah majored in exercise science and considered physical therapy, but ultimately decided to pursue real estate   [00:11:00 - 00:21:59] Choosing the Right Brokerage and Mentorship - Madison interviewed with several brokerages but chose Exit One Stop Realty for its welcoming atmosphere and supportive community - Mentorship and accountability are crucial for new agents to succeed in the business - Higher commission splits may not always be the best choice if a brokerage lacks proper support and training   [00:22:00 - 00:32:59] Mastering the Art of Door Knocking and Sphere of Influence - Madison shares her success story of door knocking and securing a listing from a 44-year resident - Consistency and personalization in marketing, such as postcards featuring recent sales, can help agents stay top-of-mind in a neighborhood - Hannah emphasizes the importance of tapping into one's sphere of influence and building relationships through social groups and events   [00:33:00 - 00:43:59] Balancing Work and Personal Life as a Real Estate Agent - Time blocking is essential for managing daily tasks and maintaining a healthy work-life balance - Setting expectations with clients and establishing boundaries can help agents avoid burnout - Wearing a name badge and incorporating real estate into everyday conversations can help agents stay top-of-mind and generate leads   [00:44:00 - 00:54:59] Overcoming the Challenges of Being a Young Agent - Hannah and Madison stress the importance of professionalism, honesty, and relying on their brokerage's support when faced with questions they can't answer - Dressing appropriately, using proper language in communication, and exuding confidence can help young agents overcome age-related stereotypes - Continuously learning from successful agents and seeking out training opportunities is crucial for personal and professional growth   [00:55:00 - 01:22:00] Staying Focused and Motivated in a Competitive Market - Real estate is a challenging but rewarding career that requires agents to step out of their comfort zone and embrace new experiences - Maintaining a positive mindset, setting goals, and celebrating successes can help agents stay motivated and focused on their business - The real estate market may fluctuate, but the value of homeownership remains constant, and agents must remind clients of the long-term benefits of investing in property   Quotes: "Professionalism is everything, too. I mean, just really like when I was, um, doing my open house on my second listing, uh, there was a couple that came in that was unrepresented and I just really told them everything about the house. So, like, going into an open house, knowing the facts about the house. Lead with facts." - Madison Yates   "I think it's scary jumping into something that you are not familiar with at all. If you want to be in this business, dive in headfirst, get the training you need, stick with it. With a lack of experience and a youthful appearance, many young agents face skepticism and doubt from potential clients. However, by focusing on professionalism, honesty, and leveraging the support of their brokerage, young agents can overcome these obstacles and build successful careers in real estate.    Professionalism is Key   One of the most important aspects of succeeding as a young agent is maintaining a high level of professionalism. This means dressing appropriately for client meetings, using proper language in all forms of communication, and exuding confidence in your abilities. By presenting yourself as a knowledgeable and capable professional, you can help clients look past your age and focus on the value you bring to the table.   When faced with questions you can't answer, it's crucial to be honest and transparent with your clients. Don't try to bluff your way through a situation or provide incorrect information. Instead, let your clients know that you will reach out to your broker or a more experienced colleague for guidance and get back to them with the correct answer. This demonstrates your commitment to providing accurate information and your willingness to learn and grow as an agent.    Leveraging Your Brokerage's Support   As a young agent, it's essential to choose a brokerage that offers a strong support system and ongoing training opportunities. By aligning yourself with a brokerage that invests in your success, you can tap into the knowledge and experience of seasoned agents and brokers. Don't be afraid to ask questions, seek advice, and learn from those who have been in the industry longer than you.   Additionally, take advantage of the marketing resources and tools provided by your brokerage. From professional headshots and branded marketing materials to access to cutting-edge technology, these resources can help you present a polished and professional image to potential clients.    Continuous Learning and Growth   To stay competitive in the real estate industry, young agents must commit to continuous learning and growth. Attend training sessions, workshops, and conferences to stay up-to-date on the latest industry trends, marketing strategies, and best practices. Seek out mentorship opportunities with successful agents in your office, and don't be afraid to ask for guidance and feedback on your performance.   By investing in your education and personal development, you can build a strong foundation of knowledge and skills that will serve you throughout your real estate career.    Embracing Your Unique Strengths   While being a young agent comes with its challenges, it also presents unique opportunities. As a member of a younger generation, you likely have a strong grasp of technology and social media, which can be valuable assets in marketing properties and connecting with clients. Embrace these strengths and use them to your advantage when building your business.   Additionally, your youth can be an appealing factor for certain demographics, such as first-time homebuyers or millennials who may feel more comfortable working with an agent closer to their age. By focusing on these niche markets and tailoring your approach to their specific needs and preferences, you can carve out a successful career as a young agent in the real estate industry.     Social media captions:   V1:    Active listening: the secret weapon of a young real estate agent.

Hannah Collins was still in art school when she approached San Francisco chef/restauranteur Adriano Paganini, then planning a new Mission District steakhouse, and asked to help out. She ended up designing Lolinda, a sleekly powerful space and launching a career around shaping some of the most striking eateries, lodging, and retail spaces in the Bay Area and increasingly, beyond. More recently Hannah, founder and principal designer of ROY, designed the luxury camping destination Yonder Escalante, described by Condé Nast Traveler “like parachuting into a design lover's dream of the American West.”   Hannah joins the podcast to reflect on recent projects [Delfina, Yonder Escalante, Hi-Five Wine], as well as the roots of her passion for hospitality, how she's growing her firm and why becoming a mother has made her a better designer. “At ROY we really see ourselves as telling other peoples' stories,” says Collins. “We're trying to pull their vision out of them and make it the best possible version they could imagine.”   ROY Website: http://www.thisisroy.com/about

Season 14 continues with VERY special episode with one of our all-time ART WORLD ICONS!!!! We meet the legendary gallerist MAUREEN PALEY. Inspiration to many of today's international contemporary galleries, Maureen was in fact the reason our co-host Robert Diament became inspired to change careers to work full-time in a gallery! We discover how she began her gallery programme in 1984 in a Victorian terraced house in London's East End. Initially named Interim Art, the gallery changed its name to Maureen Paley in 2004 as a celebration of its 20th anniversary. Since September 1999 the gallery has been situated in Bethnal Green, and in September 2020 relocated to Three Colts Lane. In July 2017 Maureen Paley opened a second space in Hove called Morena di Luna. In October 2020 a third space was opened in Shoreditch, London called Studio M. From its inception, the gallery's aim has remained consistent: to promote great and innovative artists in all media.-Maureen Paley was one of the first to present contemporary art in London's East End and has been a pioneer of the current scene, promoting and showing a diverse range of international artists. Gallery artists include Turner Prize winners Lawrence Abu Hamdan, 2019; Wolfgang Tillmans, 2000 and Gillian Wearing, 1997 as well as Turner Prize nominees Rebecca Warren, 2006; Liam Gillick, 2002; Jane and Louise Wilson, 1999 and Hannah Collins, 1993. Their recently published reporting project on Trahan, who had been living on the streets of Hollywood since she was 13, reminds us that stories about the homeless and the mean streets of our cities are more than just stories about policy: They are most importantly about people.

In response to Episode 10 of series 4 ‘Creativity in Crisis’, Eliza and Amber examine whether the arts scene during lockdown is quite so bleak. They chat with theatre veterans Jonathan Powell and Jasper Cresdee Hyde about the ADC Online Season. Considering another prominent feature of the Cambridge art scene, Amber chatted with Johnny Cresswell, the editor of The Mays. This established literature and arts anthology has had to adapt and will be entirely virtual in 2021. Moving away from how the established arts scene has adapted, Eliza consulted Hannah Collins and Claire Lee Shenfield of Cambridge Creatives. This visual arts group emerged during the Spring 2020 lockdown but have persisted and adapted to the varying lockdowns since. Their conversation included reflections on the importance of artistic collaboration despite social distancing and the creation of content specifically for online formats. Finally, we heard from Alex Hadyn-Williams of Cambridge Arts. This is a brand-new Facebook group that attempts to bring all students and societies into one place. It makes pitching projects, finding collaborators and hosting events so much easier and will be fundamental to the arts scene for our upcoming online term. Many of these conversations included a frustration that Freshers have been excluded from the Cambridge Arts Scene due to its virtual nature. We hope that the information in today’s broadcast gives you an entire of where to look for more information or ways you can get involved. Next week we’re going to be focusing entirely on Freshers. Both stories focus on the very inception of what comes into being and what we now take for granted - signs/signals/artworks as well as birds/the other/evolutionary rejects. All the while, 'A Sign in Space' draws extraordinary parallels with an art practice. From the anxieties of creating something new to the egotistic punchiness of asserting authenticity, we join Qfwfa who journeys throughout space and time, pontificating on what it is to create and leave a mark in the world of one's existence. Likewise, 'The Origin of the Birds' focuses on the start of beginnings. In this story, Qfwfa narrates his (his?) adventures into the void to discover and embrace the evolutionary rejects as part of his ancestry and presence, particularly their leader Queen Or with whom he is besotted.  'A Sign in Space' appeared in 'Cosmicomics' in 1965 while 'The Origin of the Birds' was first published in ‘t zero' 1967. Both stories feature in ‘The Complete Cosmicomics' comprising 'Cosmicomics' and 't zero' plus other stories published 2009.    CECILIA CHARLTON ceciliacharlton.com instagram ceciliacharlton   BOOKS IDEAS WRITERS  'A Room of One's Own' 1929, Virginia Woolf 'Against Interpretation' 1966, Susan Sontag 'Agnes Martin' 2015, Tate  'Brave New World' 1932, Aldous Huxley Jane Austen 'No One Belongs Here More Than You' 2007 Miranda July  Gabriel Garcia Marquez 'Eyes of a Blue Dog' 1947, 'One Hundred Years of Solitude' 1967, 'The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World' 1968 co-author Hernan Diaz 'The World of Ornament' 2006, Auguste Racinet and M Dupont-Auberville The concept of multiple discovery 'The Sixteen Trees of the Somme' 2014 Lars Mytting Three Fates from Greek mythology William Beebe, American naturalist, ornithologist, marine biologist, entomologist, explorer, and author William Weaver, Italo Calvino's translator 'Women's Work: A Personal Reckoning with Labour, Motherhood and Privilege' 2019, Megan K Stack   ARTISTS CURATORS GALLERIES Alison Jacques Gallery London, 'The Gees Bend Quiltmakers' in partnership with the Souls Grow Deep Foundation, a non-profit organisation dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the contributions of African American artists from the Southern states, 20 Dec 2020 - 6 Feb 2021 Anni Albers Agnes Martin 'Words' 1961 Dolly Parton Hannah Brown 'Art Fictions' Episode 17, 9 Dec 2020 Helen Frankenthaler Hilma Af Klimt Lee Krasner London Art Fair, 'Platform' focus on folk art londonartfair.co.uk/fair-programme/platform, 20-31 Jan 2021 Nicolaus Schafhausen, 'Der Speigel' 2013, resigned as Director of Kunsthalle Wein 2019 Robert Rauschenberg 'Erased de Kooning Drawing' 1963 Sheila Hicks Turner Contemporary Margate, 'We Will Walk: Art and Resistance in the American South' curated by Hannah Collins and Paul Goodwin, 7 Feb - 6 Sep 2020  Willem de Kooning

Gobbledygeek has been resurrected via cloning or Force magic or some shit, and to kick off season 11, Broken Magic author and The Deli Counter of Justice co-creator Eric Sipple has lightspeed-skipped on over to discuss Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker. After adoring The Last Jedi, the gang approached this supposed final film in the Skywalker Saga with heavy amounts of skepticism--well-earned, depending on who you ask. They discuss the mystical, magical malarkey behind Palpatine’s return; how director J.J. Abrams and writer Chris Terrio are uniquely suited to not deliver a satisfying conclusion; the oodles of fan service; what the film’s final scene means for the legacy of Star Wars; and more. Plus, they talk about The Baby Yoda Show AKA The Mandalorian.   Next: it is January 29, 2020. Paul and Arlo are discussing Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen for a Four-Color Flashback.
