In this episode of The Pulling Curls Podcast, Hilary Erickson delves into the complexities of navigating healthcare without traditional insurance. Sharing her personal experience with an appendicitis, Hilary discusses the use of health shares, detailing the ins and outs of how her family manages medical expenses as self-employed individuals. Learn about the advantages, challenges, and practical tips for those considering a health share alternative. Using a Direct Primary Care Membership with Dr Bradley Shumway – Episode 086 Timestamps: 00:00 Zion reimburses quickly; other health shares delay. 06:13 Unexpected healthcare costs due to insurance complexities. 06:59 Bills cleared monthly; sometimes paid using credit. 12:47 Waited 30 days for medical bill, frustrated. 13:24 Frustrated over hospital billing and collection threats. Keypoints: Hilary Erickson shares her personal experience with non-traditional healthcare, specifically a health share organization, rather than traditional health insurance. The high costs of traditional health insurance for self-employed individuals prompted Hilary to explore alternative options, leading her to Zion Healthshare. Health share organizations allow for greater flexibility in choosing hospitals, doctors, and labs without restrictive networks. Hilary explains that with health share organizations, patients are often considered self-pay and need to be proactive in managing and submitting medical bills for reimbursement. Unlike insurance companies, health shares may take time to process and reimburse bills, sometimes taking up to six months, but Zion Healthshare was notably faster. Hilary highlights the concept of a per-incident deductible with Zion Healthshare, explaining that for each new medical incident, her family is responsible for the first $1,000. The episode details the various medical bills Hilary received following her appendicitis surgery, including bills from the hospital, anesthesiologist, radiologist, and other specialists. A key frustration was the medical billing process, where hospitals initially billed exorbitant amounts before drastically reducing them for self-pay patients. Hilary emphasizes the importance of having some form of healthcare coverage to manage unexpected medical expenses and stresses the necessity of understanding and navigating the billing process. The podcast episode aims to demystify health share organizations and provide valuable insights into alternative healthcare options for families, particularly those who are self-employed. This week we're joined once again by our good friend and fantastic comedian, Spencer Bland! We kick things off talking about the “He Gets Us” Super Bowl commercial that's caused an absolute uproar. Tempers are flaring on all sides of this one… Then we trudge into the slippery, slimy, putrid swamp that is Christian Healthshare - a controvertial and uniquely-American industry bodysurfing a wave of partisan indignance, legislative corruption, and spiritual bankruptcy toward the rocky shores of financial insolvency. The past 15 years has seen healthshare participation swell from less than 50k to well over a million members in spite of the fact that 1) it's not healthcare, 2) it's largely unregulated, and 3) it's full of conartists and charlatans. While there are plenty of people who are plenty happy with their healthshare plans, the whole industry stinks… stinks like a butt. We love hanging out with Spencer, and we're big fans of his comedy! In America, health insurance is one of the most complicated systems to navigate. With The Great Resignation, more people than ever are looking for alternative options to traditional health insurance. Some folks are in between jobs or are taking the leap to try something on their own for the first time. Indipop is a healthshare platform aiming to fill the gaps for folks who might not be the best candidate for traditional insurance. Melissa Blatt joins Certified Financial Trainer Kadri Augustin for the second time on the podcast, to share an update about Indipop. Her first appearance was in February 2021 and because healthcare is constantly changing, there's a lot to chat about today. Podcast Notes Everyone should have accessible and affordable healthcare. It shouldn't be something you can just afford with nothing at all included. Indipop was born from Melissa's personal struggle when she left the corporate world. The process of finding health insurance was incredibly frustrating. When most people think about insurance, it's planning for the worst-case scenario, but what if insurance was for more than the ‘what if' moments in life? Choosing an insurance policy isn't fun, and can be a confusing process. In addition to the monthly payment, other important considerations include: What is the deductible? (the amount you have to pay before insurance kicks in) Which doctors are included in the network? Is virtual care included? Is preventative care included? How much are the copays? Are there annual or lifetime caps to the amount of coverage? How indipop is addressing the gaps for freelancers and those underinsured: Indipop plans are not the ‘unicorn' or one-size-fits all plan, but it provides options. They are subscription plans, where you become a member of a community that shares the costs of medical needs, with an open network. There's a care logistics team to help you navigate through your medical needs. You are able to keep your doctor, and receive care even if traveling. Whether it is care on demand, or a referral, you're not alone figuring out what is best for you. How it works: Indipop brings plans to you. All of them are highly vetted and meet a strict criteria. They're plans that Melissa uses herself and feels comfortable sharing with her friends and family. There are eligibility and considerations around pre-existing conditions, with a two year check in. Some of the changes in the healthcare industry since Melissa's last appearance: It's an exciting time to be in healthcare and see the industry changing. These types of memberships are more available, especially in mental health and pharmacy care. Virtual medicine has really expanded and evolved. People like being able to receive care at home; they feel less rushed and more comfortable. Virtual medicine cuts out time, traveling, waiting, and logistics. People are asking for virtual healthcare because it's working, and they're getting the help they need. Younger people want to take control of their health and are interested in preventative care. Traditional insurance has a place, but it's refreshing there are different options out there, like indipop. Indipop replaces insurance with a new, different type of healthcare. It is available to clients in all 50 states, even when traveling. Customer service is a huge priority. When we aren't feeling well, it can be hard to function and the team is there to make sure you're taken care of. Healthshare companies are not new, but they are becoming more mainstream and accessible. Health shares aren't very well understood. Today I want to help you understand what a healthshare is, and what it can do for you. Today's guest is Heather Eden. She is the Business Development Manager at Zion Health, affordable alternative to health insurance. Her first passion is my family. Her next passion is encouraging the best health, in all forms. She thrives on thinking outside the box-whether that is making decisions for your healthcare; or encouraging prevention by movement, nutrition, and caring for the soul; or by engaging in solutions for ongoing care for the body. She is fascinated by the human body and passionate about physical movement in all forms, most inspired by anything adrenaline-producing or by the stillness of yoga and mediation. Full disclosure, I am an affiliate for Zion Healthshare but I am also a user, and it's the healthshare that I have found most comfortable. This link will take you to their DPC program. This episode could save you thousands, tens of thousands, even HUNDREDS of thousands of dollars. So make sure you listen to it ASAP.One of the biggest recurring expenses for many early-stage entrepreneurs in the post-Obamacare era is health insurance. In fact, many people never even consider striking out on their own simply because they're afraid to leave their employer and lose their health insurance.Lots of people have pivoted to health share programs, but those come with their own major drawbacks, the most significant being that it can often take months to get paid out on claims. Not everyone can afford to float thousands of dollars in bills for 60-90 days, or even longer. If you can relate to any of this, you MUST listen to today's show. Our guest is Andy Schoonover, CEO of upstart "community-powered alternative to health insurance" CrowdHealth. After being tagged with an $8,000 bill for a 10-minute procedure that his health insurance refused to pay -- even though it was urgently recommended for his daughter by her doctor! -- Andy decided to do more than just sit around and complain about the injustice of our healthcare system. Melissa Blatt is the Founder + CEO of indipop, offering simple and affordable healthcare for the self-employed and small business owner. She started out in the entertainment industry behind the camera, which led to business development and marketing roles for diverse companies. After leaving the corporate world to go out on her own and experience the freedom and flexibility that she was craving, she realized that healthcare was going to be a pain point. After exploring all the options for various plans and coming up with the same high premiums and deductibles, she knew she wasn't alone. 57 million in the US alone are "the Independent Population." After conducting a deep dive into the health industry, Melissa found healthshares to be an alternative solution that is not mainstream. She started indipop to curate and hand select high value plans to go on the site saving a lot of stress, time and money!

Make sure to subscribe to the podcast on your favorite podcast app. Links can be found at datapoints.intersystems.com. I'm Derek Robinson. And on today's episode, we're chatting with Michelle Spisak and Jaising Pasten, two of my colleagues on the Online Learning team, for a look inside Online Learning. Derek Robinson 00:00:43 Welcome to Episode 13 of Data Points by InterSystems Learning Services. Today's episode is the first in what may be a recurring type of episode every once in a while, called What's New in Online Learning? The idea behind an episode like this one is to take a look behind the scenes of the Online Learning team as we build content and work on projects aimed to better equip learners of our technology. In the first half of the episode, I'll talk to Michelle Spisak, an Instructional Designer on the team, about the monthly learning newsletter. Then I'll chat with fellow course developer Jaising Pasten, about what his experiences have been since joining the Online Learning team after spending several years in the InterSystems Chile office, working on TrackCare, learning, and implementation. So without further ado, here's Michelle. Derek Robinson 00:01:26 All right, and welcome to the podcast, Michelle Spisak, Instructional Designer here at InterSystems. Michelle, how's it going? Michelle Spisak: It's good, Derek, how are you doing? Derek Robinson: I'm doing great. We're very happy to have you on for a little bit different of an episode today. We're really focusing within Learning Services and talking about some of the things that we have going on. So obviously you have, you know, a lot of different responsibilities in your role here at InterSystems in the Learning Services team as an Instructional Designer, but we're going to focus today on your role with the Learning Services newsletter. So first question kind of just for the audience that may not be familiar with it and may not know what it is, tell us what the Learning Services newsletter is and why we began offering it in the first place. Michelle Spisak 00:02:02 Yeah, so the newsletter is just basically a way for our clients and partners to stay up to date with what Learning Services is coming out with. So on the Online team, we're always coming out with new videos and learning paths, and other things like that. Documentation has been working really hard to modernize their website and make it even easier for people to find what they really need, really quickly. And so we

Across healthcare, access to data is increasing exponentially and bringing new opportunities for stakeholders throughout the industry. But it’s important to understand that when it comes to data, availability is not quite as important as usefulness. As the coronavirus pandemic tightens economic activity and strains hospitals in many countries, actionable data holds promise to reduce the impact. We spoke with Don Woodlock, head of the HealthShare business unit at InterSystems, before COVID-19 emerged, but his insights into data’s role in improving the healthcare system have only grown more important. Healthcare is seeing a shift toward so-called “clean data,” which is more useful in helping generate effective insight, Woodlock says. Late last year, he caught up with InterSystems organization’s partners, including health systems, health information exchanges (HIE) and payer organizations, to understand their approaches. Across that spectrum, capturing clean data was a critical mission objective. So here’s the big question: how do these forward-thinking organizations plan to achieve that goal? In this episode of InterSystems PULSEcast, Woodlock spotlights the answers and examines how critical healthcare change-makers like health systems, HIEs and payers are fitting data into forms that are helpful to doctors, data analysts and other key players. He also explores the opportunities inherent in following the clean data trend, and how enterprising organizations can prepare to act upon the insights that are sure to follow.
Suzie and Matt help run Wenatchee's full service enrollment center for the Washington Healthplanfinder. Our homepage is www.wahbroker.org We have been helping people navigate through healthcare and insurance for years. Matt came started with homes and autos before a customer drafted him for health. Suzie came in from a Pharmacy Tech and started helping with Medicare. Their Mom and pop operation is called Suzie Health Solutions. If you want help from someone that doesn't charge a fee then come talk to us. Today, we are talking about Healthshares or Health Ministries. There are a lot of rumors about these non-insurance options. We get a fair amount of people coming back to a qualified plan. When you have a qualified plan then there are important things: 1. Covid 19 testing is at zero cost. 2. You have an out of pocket maximum. 3. There are often services that occur prior to a deductible. 4. They handle preexisiting conditions. 5. You can do both a Healthshare and a qualified plan. Look up your resources. You can always look up legitimate people and businesses at the Office of the Insurance Commissioner. This is especially important if you are working with people that you do not know, can not visit their office, or phoned you up out of the blue to talk about healthcare. Some of the Healthshares that we are talking about have been kicked out of the state and fined serious money for not doing what they said they were going to do.
Dr. Madeira interviews Shawn Needham, R.Pharm about his book - Sickened: How the Government Ruined Healthcare and How to Fix it. Shawn Needham discusses his solutions to the US Federal government being overly involved in our healthcare solutions, which is increasing the costs of healthcare (sickcare) in the USA. Insurance and conventional medical care costs in the Unite States outspend all other developed countries in the world per capita. Yet the USA is still the sickest developed country for consecutive years, and meanwhile other much poorer countries showing far more health than the United States citizens. This is devastating for US citizens who are spending around $20,000 - $25,000 for a family of four for their family's sickcare insurance. This “health insurance” is one of the biggest scam of modern times! He offers a 6 part solution plan in his book to this massive issue, and we discuss some of these solutions during our podcast discussion and interview. HealthShare sits down to talk about physician credentialing with Anthony Begando, CEO of Professional Credentialing Exchange. Also known as ProCredEx, which is also online at procredex.com, their joint venture with Hashed Health is bringing a physician credentialing data tool to the forefront now while others are still pondering what such a tool would look like. Those folks are a little late to the game. HealthShare discusses its role in identifying a partner in the space who can help hospitals actually take on the viciously time-intensive space that is physician credentialing by bypassing the issue of credentialing software altogether. Instead, they focus on creating an exchange whereby hospitals and physicians supply or store their source-verified credentials with protected yet easy access at any time. When a physician transitions to another facility, those credentials are accessible by the physician or the hospital where the physician is transferring. It doesn't matter which credentialing software the hospital uses or prefers. Now ... if you're a hospital still dissatisfied with your credentialing software, you should definitely take a look at our suite of solutions. In our portfolio, you will find a Verge Health, which has continued to provide reliable software and a team that can drive down total input time and deliver on the promise of fluid management of a physicians credentials.
I am currently going deep into how technology is impacting Healthcare. As part of that I am speaking to early-stage entrepreneurs in the initial staging of funding, but as part of my research, I came across Rami Weiss who is the CEO of a fully scaled up health tech business called Healthshare, which is building innovative products that improve access to health information and health practitioners. The conversation feels quite timely as we covered the debate over the Australian Governments design and execution of the My Health record, which has come under scrutiny from many including myself over concerns around how well client privacy will be protected. This for me is a real double-edged sword. On one hand, connecting patient data frees up time for practitioners and enables them to have a more holistic view of the patient, it also potentially opens up a viable opportunity for applying machine learning to look for solutions to disease. The downside, for example, would be my podiatrist being given automatic access to completely unrelated areas such as my sexual infection history would be a pretty sensitive one (Disclaimer I am as clean as a whistle I think!) Thanks again to Rami for taking time to speak to me and if anybody is listening who is working in the health tech space or believes they have a solution to a problem in health, do reach out on the socials I would love to chat more.

Dan outlines how important it is to stay the course, keep at it, leverage your networks and be grateful for what is around you. Dan covers 10 key topics throughout the podcast: 1.Stop spending all your time just working on your division and work on the organisation with the CEO 2.You have to demonstrate that you work for the betterment of the entire organisation 3.If you get down into the detail, you'll just annoy your people and hold them back 4.The role of the leader is to get a good team around you, set some good parameters, ask them how their going to achieve the goal, then give them some space. 5.We often waste time on developing the wrong people, when we should be cutting them. If after a month or two if you have a bad feeling about someone, its rare that they will come good. Look at how they manage people. A lot people are great atmanaging up, but kick down. 6.If you tolerate poor behaviour from one of your leaders then you're complicit in it. Let someone tell his or her story first. Be respectful. 7.We have a system that we stick to for family balance 8.Both times he got knocked back for exec team roles, something good came of it. Make sure you respond well to disappointments. 9.You've got to get comfortable with uncomfortable conversations. You do have to steel yourself for them. You've got tobe prepared and have examples. 10.Very rarely will people say no when you ask them to be a mentor.
