With returning guest Seth Zarate! Listening note: This episode sounds different from our usual productions. Cody, Seth, and Jason were all in a room together, while Aaron joined remotely. Jason had precious little editing time. Our apologies for any disruptions. One of Peter Weir's earliest feature length films, THE CARS THAT ATE PARIS bears some of his hallmarks (genre-mixing, dualities, subcultures, cars cresting hills menacingly) and also some surreal, batshit filmmaking in the same conversation as MAD MAX (1979) (obviously) and DEATH RACE 2000 (1975) and PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE (1974) – and also the movies of the Coen Brothers? The Man Hunos Bruno, our resident Bruce Willis authority, Seth Zarate (https://twitter.com/snzarate) is back and talking to his younger self on Trylove! LOOPER put Rian Johnson on the big-budget map and earned him the director's seat on a fuckin' STAR WARS movie. It's the movie that tried to convince us Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt could feasibly look like the same person with varying degrees of success. It's also packed to the gills with moral inquiries into the mutability of self, musings on the origin of male pain, the responsibility of men to correct their own mistakes, some really cool shotguns called blunderbusses, and Paul Dano making one specific, pitifully funny noise. Returning guest Seth Zarate grabs his trumpet to blow down the Walls of Jericho! It's the movie that came up with the thing where a lady hitchhikes by showing a bit of her bare leg instead of pointing out her thumb! IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT is also a funny early romantic comedy that, in lieu of a balance between “rom” and “com,” often leans into its uncomfortable scenarios without giving the audience a clear indication of how they're supposed to feel about its antics. Featuring the first appearance of writer, Trylon volunteer, Horrorthon body counter, and comms specialist Michael Popham (https://twitter.com/mpopham)! A direct sequel to the movie where Godzilla rips Mechagodzilla's head off, TERROR OF MECHAGODZILLA is a movie (written by newcomer Yukiko Takayama!) where Godzilla rips Mechagodzilla's head off… and there's a dinosaur… being controlled by aliens… who've teamed up with a disgraced scientist… whose daughter is a cyborg… that controls another Mechagodzilla. It's a pretty stacked movie! It's also the lowest-grossing Godzilla ever and it marked the end of Godzilla's Shōwa era before a nine-year hiatus. Somewhere in that milieu, there's a strangely human, tender core to the story, anchored largely by Katsura Mafune (Tomoko Ai), the mad scientist's daughter-turned-cyborg whose position in the plot. We talk about her many motivations and how her character – dutiful to her father's cause, finding love in her enemies, possessed by her extraterrestrial overlords – reflects both the humanity in the movie's monsters and the monstrosities of its humans. Greetings creepy people, and welcome back to Horror Business, the podcast that loves you no matter what. As always you are in for a treat! This episode we’re joined by the one and only Joe Yanick of the wonderful Small Screen Cinema podcast to help us unpack the annual Exhumed Films Horrorthon, a twenty four hour horror marathon the weekend before Halloween in Philadelphia. In addition to discussing the movies with Joe, we were also lucky enough to talk to some people at the Horrorthon on various things, including but not limited to Alice Cooper and the eternal question of ‘Is Pumpkinhead actually any good?’ (Spoiler: yes. It is). I, Justin, unfortunately had to bow out about halfway through the ‘thon due to some personal issues, so there were some movies that played that I couldn’t offer any input on, but Liam and Joe pick up the slack with the movies I hadn’t seen. We apologize in advance for the rough sound quality and simply ask that you find it in yourselves to bear it out for us because we would do the same for you. The theme for this year’s horrorthon was the golden decade of horror: the 1980s. The movies shown were, in chronological order, Motel Hell, The Boogens, Visiting Hours, Cujo, Eyes Of Fire, Night Shadows aka Mutant, Monster Dog, Scream For Help, The Mutilator, The Hitcher, Child’s Play, House, Rawhead Rex, and Society.       We were lucky enough to talk to some people at the Horrorthon about what they had seen so far and what they were excited to see the rest of the night, and at the end of the episode we have some of those short interviews for you guys. As always thanks to everyone and anyone who checked this episode out, or shared a tweet/shared a post on FB/gave us love by recommending us to someone. We love you forever for listening. Massive thanks to the wonderful Joe Yanick for debasing himself enough to appear on this podcast and talk with us about the movies we saw. More of Joe’s delightful insight can be found at the Small Screen Cinema podcast, which is available on iTunes and Stitcher. Thanks to Exhumed Films and everyone involved for putting on the Horrorthon. More information on Exhumed can be found at www.exhumedfilms.com. Thank you to anyone we hung out/shot the shit with there, you are all amazing and it was a blast talking to you. As always thanks to Justin Miller and Doug Tilley for their technical contributions, Mike Smaczylo for the awesome fliers, and always thanks to Josh “El Guapo” Alvarez for the theme song, Any questions, comments, suggestions for movies and guests, or if you yourself want to join us for a movie viewing or even an episode, can be sent to thehorrorbiz@gmail.com. In a podcast first, the podcast...repeats itself. But in a thematic way! To celebrate the end of Shocktober alongside Halloween, Peter returns to five different conversations exploring the horror genre in some way. First, Michael Koresky talks about the fear-inducing but plainly stylized The Seventh Victim, which turns classical continuity into a source of horror. Then, Kim Morgan explores trauma in the highly underrated rape drama Something Wild with Carroll Baker. Then it's back to Classical Hollywood with Farran Nehme-Smith's choice of Three Strangers, a supernatural film noir where a promise from a Chinese goddess only leads to doom for Geraldine Fitzgerald, Sydney Greetstreet, and poor Peter Lorre. Then the line between horror, comedy, documentary, and general "WTF" is truly bent with Matt Singer's choice of The Buried Secret of M. Night Shaymalan, which (inadvertently?) explores the limits and literalism of auteurism. Finally, we go to the purest horror film of all time with Angela Catalano's choice of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, a film that knows no boundaries when it comes to showing unadulterated malice. It's time to revisit our most frightening conversations! 0:00-3:52 Opening 5:16-19:03 The Seventh Victim with Michael Koresky 20:45-34:50 Something Wild with Kim Morgan 36:48-55:08 Three Strangers with Farran Nehme-Smith 56:11-59:13 Sponsorship Section 1:00:59-1:20:45 The Buried Secret of M. Episode 39 was recorded LIVE and ON LOCATION at the Exhumed Films 24 Hour Horrorthon! We Have to begin with so many thank you’s, first off to Exhumed Films for such an awesome event, second to our good friend Jacob Knight for recording and intro and outro for this episode, and then to all of you who spoke to us and who bought t-shirts. EPISODE NOTES: As with any episode we do like this, LIVE AND ON LOCATION, there are a few different elements. However, this one has more than usual so I wanted to break it down for you Intro from Josh (he had to miss the Horrorthon) Intro recorded on site by Me and Jacob Various Interviews This is cool, the Exhumed guys brought in the write of Night of the Demons Joe Augustyn and he did a Q+A after the film, so this is a recording of that More interviews Wrap up by Me and Jacob (This goes down at about the 1.5 hour mark) There is also a BIG APOLOGY due. I was using a new device to record a lot of this episode, and so occasionally it didn’t work or I used it wrong and we lost interviews. Some of those lost interviews were friends, others folks we just met. HOWEVER one was  gentleman who I believe is named Chris who runs THE HUDSON HORROR SHOW! Guy was super nice and cool and really went out of his way to promote his event in his interview, and we lost it. My bad Chris. So do me a favor and go check out the AWESOME Hudson Horror Show!   SOUND NOTES: It is a little rough at times. We recorded this on site with our new mobile recorder, and it took some time to figure out how it works. So we not only lost some interviews, but the sound quality varies to a frustrating degree. The intro from Josh is also a little rough because of equipment issues on his end. So Basically, the end is the best recorded part, where me and Jacob sit down and talk. Of course, I was half dead at this point so it ain’t perfect. It will do though. ANYWAY thanks for listening, please comment and share, and remember we still have shirts so email us at cinepunx@gmail.com The post EPISODE 39: ON LOCATION AT EXHUMED FILMS 24 HOUR HORRORTHON IX appeared first on Cinepunx.

LOOK AT US KEEPING OUR PROMISES LIKE SOME SORT OF SQUARES! IT IS A NEW EPISODE OF THE NOTORIOUS C.I.N.E.P.U.N.X.     Oh, hai guise. Welcome to the latest installment of our MONTH OF HORRORS! We sat down with Mosh Master, Horror Hound, and Vocalist extreme John Wren! You may know him from his band BOTTOMFEEDER  or you may have read some of his film reviews on STEREOKILLER  or you may have had him mosh you into oblivion during an ALL OUT WAR set or for that matter NEW FOUND GLORY or GWAR. dude gets around. As one of the first dudes I remember knowing from both shows and who made an effort to see cool movies, I was stoked to have him on the show. He and Josh hit it off too, and Josh declared that they are now friends, so that is a plus. We spent more time discussing the new Austrian film GOODNIGHT MOMMY, than I think we intended. Our hope was that the film would lead to a richer discussion of horror in general, and though we had a good conversation, it wasn’t as broad as I know we could have done. I of course talk too much as usual, cause I am a monster.
