In culture and the arts, labeling something you don't like (or don't understand) "pretentious" is the easy way out. It's a conversation killer, implying that any dialogue is pointless, and those who disagree are merely duped by what you've cleverly discerned as a charade. It's akin to cynically revealing that a magic show is all smoke and mirrors—as if creative vision doesn't necessitate a leap of faith. In this episode, Phil and JF explore the nuances of pretentiousness, distinguishing between its fruitful and hollow forms. They argue that the real gamble, and inherent value, of daring to pretend lies in recognizing that imagination is an active contributor to, rather than a detractor from, reality. Pretentiousness, the act of showing off to others in order to inflate your own talents and abilities, annoys most people...or does it? It certainly seems as if pretentiousness should annoy at least most of us. After all, many of us claim to be moral beings who seek truth and justice for all. But actions always speak louder than words and what we do in real life is often very different from what we report about it later. The reality is that pretentiousness comes from a deep place of wanting to be heard and taken seriously. A person can want to be heard for many different reasons, but the drive to be heard over others can either come from a place of insecurity or downright arrogance. Some people are so haughty that they simply believe that they must be right and cannot be wrong. Others feel left out by society and so devolve into fantasy in an attempt to cope with the pain and rejection that often accompanies being proven incorrect. But, if all people who are pretentious are attempting to do is get our attention, then why on earth would they further push us away by doing something we dislike? Most would simply assume that it is because they are crazy, but that is a lazy person's answer often used to dismiss a person without providing any real evidence. The real answer to why people behave pretentiously is that people respond to pretentious behavior more than they respond to what would be considered "good" behavior. If you think about it, pretentiousness in popular culture and even in what people would call "high culture" (opera, symphonies, ballet, etc.) is pretty much everywhere you look. Billionaires boast on twitter about their latest stock purchases. Celebrities brag constantly about being the best in their respective fields. Politicians constantly talk about all the wonderful things they have done for all of us instead of addressing current problems. But it goes beyond just bragging. Being pretentious is a great way to get everyone to pay attention to you and it has become almost a required part of all marketing campaigns. It is not longer just news you are watching; it is the most unbiased, most professional, most error free professional journalism you have ever seen. It is not longer just a debate; it is a childish war between two ideologies. I can no longer just tell you a fact; I have to cite twenty-nine sources before you will even admit the sky is blue. It is no longer about being rational while keeping an open mind; it is about having the biggest brain in the room and "destroying" detractors with your superior high functioning cognitive abilities. Everyone has to be the best at everything now. However, people are so busy trying inform everyone on the planet that they are the best around that they have forgotten such behavior is the very definition of pretentiousness. So, why are people being so pretentious? Perhaps, deep down, we all would like to be. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/morecontentplease/support

Dustin and Jake flirt with being pretentious in our first single-movie dissection episode. We talk all about "Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)," what it means, who it's for, and the filmmaker, composer, and performers involved. Because it is a satire on superhero movies, Hollywood, Broadway, actors, critics, and even the audiences, we also divert into all those areas as well. Especially critics as we are being critical and hypocritical at the same time. Let us know what you think about Birdman, what you took away as some of the meanings in it, and let us know if you like this episode format! E123 - A look at our first two qualities of a wise person ... Humility, once attained and ingrained in you, allows you to shift your focus to Brahman. Pretentiousness, or pretending to have what you do not have is bondage to the desire to impress others so that they will have a good opinion of you. Like all desires, this is insatiable and ultimately unsatisfying. The goal is to release yourself from relying on what other people think of you and instead find peace within through your closeness with Brahman.
In this week's episode Elle and Camilla celebrate the oncoming roaring 20s with a cocktail from the *other* roaring 20s and go in on some very sexy nerdy non-fiction, from mushrooms that can navigate the quickest route out of an IKEA to debating whether pretentiousness is always a bad thing. Elle also tries to guess the plot of the exciting debut from Eliza Clark, Boy Parts, in this week's JBBC segment and Camilla has some hot gossip on the relative size of a monkey's balls. Yes. "One man pretends to be rich, yet has nothing; another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth." Proverbs 13:7. Pretentiousness is ultimate poverty. Humility is ultimate wealth. The ultimate poverty is pretending that you are going to heaven when you have no basis to claim it. The rejection of the cross is pretentiousness at its worst! "For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich." 2 Corinthians 8:9.

The Deucecast Movie Show is proud to do what only a few people thought -- or cared -- they could do... hit Episode 400. After 399 shows of film mediocrity (with some flashes of brilliance: see "Hoyle, KB"), the 400th show begins. To celebrate 400, Mikey, Dave, and #TwitterlessDrEarl, are hosting the very first Deucecast Movie Show Podcast Virtual Film Festival, each showcasing five films that are near and dear to them over the course of a virtual weekend, on a virtual stage, in front of a virtual audience. And because the show wouldn't be what it was without the fans who listen, and the rotating cast of characters that come on the show, ten of the regulars have been invited to give three of their favorite films to showcase. Jennifer Kaufman is on first, with what she considers to be a perfect film, plus a cute flick between her and Dude Kaufman, and a sentimental Deucecast favorite too. Longtime co-host and now Gulag occupant Pinky comes back to give his fave Pixar film, his fave horror film, and a recent movie he saw as a young tyke. Like, when he was 8. Indie fan and Mikey contrarian Jeremy Burgess steps in for a fabulous sports documentary, a classic thriller, and then zags with an unexpected guilty pleasure. Finally, on Part 1, the TechnoRetro Dads themselves join the show -- Shaz & Shua showcase some classic 80s sci-fi, a Steve Martin classic, and, of course, Krull. As well as Dave's story about Cheap Trick. Of course, the show hosts have their own picks too, with a crazy doc and a serious doc. Pretentiousness reigns from 1928, Incredible Michael Mann, and another Kerri Green name drop. Join the show next week for Part 2 of the Virtual Film Fest, with appearances by Retro Joe, Clay Shaver, Jenn Novotny and both Old and Young Ryfun!

Frieze editor and writer and author of Pretentiousness: Why It Matters, Dan Fox talks about: The English accent in the U.S., which has been called ‘fake,’ and even ‘villainous’; his intention in writing the book to get people, in using the word “pretentious,” to think more about what they mean when they use that word, whether they mean it as an insult or not; people being “pretentious” in film and television, and why people criticize Anglos who mix French words into their sentences; the differences in the way art is consumed and critiqued by London compared with New York art audiences; art goers as described in his book, and we have a rather intense debate about selfie-focused art-goers, particularly vis-à-vis waiting in long lines, as in for the Yayoi Kusama show(s); the complex ways that class functions in the art world (including class barriers for entry), and some of the various reasons that people become committed to the field, and/or lifestyle; and the time when an art duo confronted him in the street after he tore them apart in a review, a scene right out of a Western.
Kevin Welch is is the owner and head brewer of Minneapolis’ Boom Island Brewing Company. Sound familiar? I interviewed his wife Qiuxia. (Question 26 // Does Craft Beer Belong To White Men?) As a professional french horn player for the Minnesota Orchestra turned brewery owner, Kevin is passionate about both beer and music, however, the real reason I sat down with him is because of his passion to make both of those worlds as accessible as possible for the world to enjoy. Join me on a snowy winter’s night as I get out of the bitter cold to sit down with Kevin in his glowing warm brewery over one of his freshly brewed Belgian beers. My brother returns to his humble abode in New Orleans, LA! We discussed the recent SCOTUS rulings, his time on "The Hill," and my favorite subject, his thesis on Creole Identity in Louisiana (most importantly, OBVIOUSLY, New Orleans!). Pretentiousness and accents abound in this "The Women's US Team just won the Women's World Cup!"-fueled episode of "Projecting."
We invite our friend and special guest Connor Brunson to join us in our ramblings.
Sidney and Corey discuss the scumminess of Shia Lebeouf, kids actin' a fool, and somehow segue into the idea of being hypercritical of people, things, and whatever is going on around them. Then they get a little darker and get into the topic of being pretentious, being an asshole, and covering up what really might be insecurities or being self-conscious about what they're doing with their own endeavors. Finally, we cap it all off with SNL and then sharing our love for Bob's Burgers.Links:Gorgeous Children / Heela Monsta — Intro / outro to the showMount Holyoke commencement speech of 2001 — Cross Fertilization
