It's something of a nostalgia fest on the 60th episode of the road.cc Podcast this week, as we're joined by retro bike restorer extraordinaire and leading proponent of the lost art of ‘drillium', the Campag Kid, for a fascinating discussion about the roots of his obsession for classic bikes and illustrious Italian components, the lengths to which he'll go to satiate that 50-year-long obsession, and how his real-life career in the automotive industry can often butt up against – literally – his love for cycling. The Campag Kid is a cycling enthusiast and former racer who has acquired a cult online following restoring and building Campagnolo-equipped bikes. He's also one of the few devotees keeping alive the retro art of drillium, the practice of hand drilling holes in components for aesthetic and weight purposes pioneered by Eddy Merckx for his Hour Record attempt in Mexico in 1972 and picked up by British time trialling great Alf Engers.During his chat with Jack, Jamie, and Jo, he chats about his introduction to the sport as an inquisitive 12-year-old, how he earned his lifelong nickname, his favourite projects, why he spent 18 months sourcing a chain, how he balances his enthusiasm for cycling with his work designing cars and motorbikes, and why cycling's love of retro will continue to live on.

Ellen Van Dijk always had a need for speed. Becoming a speed skater at eight and cycling since the age of ten, Ellen has been competing for most of her life. Ultimately Ellen found more success as a cyclist, having become a national cycling champion for the fifth time in 2007, so she quit speed skating and became a full-time cyclist. Racking up the world title successes, Ellen decided she would try her hand at claiming a world record. So in April 2022, Ellen announced she would try to break the hour record on May 23rd in Grenchen, Switzerland, and on May 23rd, Ellen did just that.In today's episode, we sit down with Ellen to talk about how she went from speed skater to UCI Hour Champion world record holder. We'll cover Ellen's backstory, how she claimed the UCI Hour Champion world record, including managing the nerves leading up to the race, and she'll even give advice for younger cyclists looking to turn professional.Ellen Van Dijk 2022 Season in Review: https://racing.trekbikes.com/stories/trek-segafredo-women/2022-season-in-review-ellen-van-dijk
It's always fun to find out what questions are going to really catch Josh's attention. In this episode, we talk about tiny marginal gains, postulate why mountain bikes are not particularly aero, follow up on the best gases to fill your tires (and why), and much more. But the question that really grabbed Josh has to do with a crazy hypothetical: how would you optimize your bike and track for an hour record attempt...on the moon? It's an intriguing question and one we're far from done with. We think you'll love this episode of Ask Josh Anything!
Hello everyone! Welcome to this first episode of Deep Dish Discussion! We’re focussing this podcast around professional track cycling, and nerdy talk about very high-end track bikes. This week's episode of the Nerd Alert podcast is certainly a special one. Dave Rome and Ronan Mc Laughlin chat with the newly crowned Hour World Record Holder, Dan Bigham. Prior to besting Victor Campanaerts' 2019 World Record, the British track cyclist was best known for his work in aerodynamic engineering. He's worked with Mercedes F1, Canyon-SRAM, Team KGF/ HUUB-Wattbike, and Jumbo-Visma, and is currently a performance engineer with the Ineos Grenadiers. He also happens to be the brains behind the WattShop. With such a resume in tech backed by a world-beating engine, it was well overdue that Dan joined us as a special guest on the podcast. Here we chat about the things he's allowed to discuss related to his Hour Record, we touch on the things he's not allowed to discuss, and plenty more.
After a nice long summer break, we're back with more questions for Josh. Josh, Hottie and Fatty met IRL in Leadville last month, so we spend a good chunk of this episode talking about the LT100 MTB race -- altitude, aerodynamic speed minimums, and other marginal gains available two miles above sea level. We also make time to talk about Dan Bigham's amazing new hour record, aerometers, and the story behind the new Gravelero pump. Don't miss this episode!
Last year Dan Bigham broke the British Hour Record in Grenchen and this year he has his sights on the World Hour Record and will do so again in the Swiss Velodrome in Grenchen.
This time on Faster, I'm talking about the Hour Record. And I'm talking about it with a stellar group of guests, including current record-holders Ellen van Dijk and Victor Campenaerts, as well as former holders Joss Lowden, Molly Van Houweling and Alex Dowsett. The Hour is the simplest challenge in cycling – how far you can ride on a track, on your own, in one hour. There are no tactics, or teammates, just you and what you've got. And while it's simple, it has a reputation as just about the toughest thing you can subject yourself to on a bike. Even the great Eddy Merckx said it was the longest hour of his entire career, and that he'd suffered as never before. We look at what makes it so difficult – the challenges of pacing, and the unrelenting pressure of riding at full effort with no snatches of rest, no chances to move on the bike. There's the question of how you train for something so unique, something that only a tiny handful of riders have ever even attempted. And what can you learn from it – does the Hour make you a better rider back in the world of normal racing? We talk about failure too, because Hour attempts can and do go horribly wrong. What's it like to square up to something as black-and-white as the Hour and not quite make it? More than one of my guests tells me that a record attempt that fails is a much worse experience than one that succeeds, not just emotionally, but physically. It's the most important record in cycling, and it's a great way to kick off the second season of Faster. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Aerodynamics expert Dan Bigham returns to the podcast with a new job title and a host of new innovations to discuss. Today, Dom leads off the Dom Gioradno Program by telling about the massive spike in inflation, revealing the amount of money his wife had to spend at the grocery store, asking listeners for the time that they first noticed the crazy prices, after a report today notes that Biden's December inflation was the most we've seen since the 1980s. Then, Giordano plays back a clip from Rand Paul on Fox News fresh off the newest round in his feud against Dr. Fauci, in which he called out Fauci for being a politician, saying that it was a cheap shot to suggest that Rand Paul wishes violence upon him. Then, Asra Nomani, Vice President of Strategy and Investigations for Parents Defending Education, rejoins the Dom Giordano Program to discuss a bombshell report by her organization that alleges that Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona solicited a very controversial letter from the National School Boards Association that compared protesting parents to domestic terrorists. In an October 5th email exchange, NSBA Secretary Treasurer Kristi Swett wrote that NSBA leader Chip Slaven “told officers he was writing a letter to provide information to the White House, from a request by Secretary Cardona.” Nomani tells how the organization uncovered the emails, and Giordano lays forth what this means in the grand scope of the school board narrative. Joining James and Joe this week is Chris Boardman, Olympic champion, Tour de France yellow jersey wearer, Hour Record holder, Greater Manchester walking and cycling commissioner, Question Time guest and everything in between.Boardman talks us through how the pandemic changed cycling, what's stopping those at the top backing cycling and how embracing two wheels is our only way out of this current crisis and the best way of avoiding the next one, climate change. We also discuss Boardman's brief stint working in his local Halfords last year, aerodynamically testing 10,000 materials including fur and sequins for the 2008 Olympic Games and getting only one portion of free chips for becoming an Olympic Champion. If you liked this episode, please remember to leave us a review, comment and make sure to share with your cycling friends! In association with Sportful and Jaybird.Cyclist Magazine Podcast sponsor Jaybird Sport is offering listeners 15% off its VISTA wireless headphones with the code 'cyclist15'. I’m not going to pretend to know much about time trials. I’ve done one. I also did an Hour Record on the track. That was fun, ahem. On the other hand, our main guests today are arguably the greatest athlete-coach duo in the history of time trials. Kristin Armstrong won three Olympic gold medals and two world championship titles in her gilded career, and Jim Miller was her coach the entire time. The pair have a fascinating story about the way they dissected the discipline and dominated their competition. It wasn’t necessarily the most traditional method, as you’ll hear, but it was undoubtedly effective. Throughout our conversation, there are a host of fascinating and fruitful messages about how they looked at and broke down the race of truth. On a more practical note, we also hear from one of the greats on the men’s side, Svein Tuft, as well as Sebastian Weber, who coached four-time world champion Tony Martin during his illustrious career. Finally, we get some sage advice from tech guru Nick Legan about how to bring speed to time trials even if you have a small budget. All that and much more as we explore both the art and science of time trials, today on Fast Talk. Let's make you fast! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
