After a decade of consistent leadership coming to an end soon, will there be major changes ahead for the multibillion-dollar global nutrition company? Glanbia Performance Nutrition is one of two wholly-owned segments of Glanbia plc (LON:GLB), a multi-billion dollar global nutrition company. The brands in the Glanbia Performance Nutrition portfolio include; Optimum Nutrition, BSN, think!, Isopure, Amazing Grass, and SlimFast. I'll use the recent earnings report, earnings call, and associated news to update you on how Glanbia Nutritionals and Glanbia Performance Nutrition is performing against the complex operating environment. Glanbia Performance Nutrition had 2023 H1 revenue of $889 million, which increased 3.4% YoY, but that was a sequential slowdown from Q1. The brand portfolio continued to have strong pricing power in the market (with it being up 10.9%), but volume was down 7.5%. Additionally, I'll dive deeper into Glanbia Performance Nutrition geographical, product format, sales channel, and categorial performance (performance nutrition, healthy lifestyle, and weight management). BTW I'm thinking about the creation of a change.org petition for the Glanbia Performance Nutrition division name to be amended to The Optimum Nutrition Company. This one brand alone now accounts for 60% of the total GPN revenue. In the first half of 2023, Optimum Nutrition had 16.2% growth coming from both pricing and volume gains…and U.S. market consumption growth was 14.3%. Finally, I talk through what it could mean for Glanbia as longtime Group Managing Director, Siobhán Talbot, is retiring and current head of the Glanbia Performance Nutrition division, Hugh McGuire, will take over starting January 1, 2024. Is this a big deal? The short answer is yes! So, what does the next 3-5 years at Glanbia look like? Hugh himself stated the normal boiler plate CEO changeover stuff in statements, but I think Glanbia needs to utilize its strong financial position to make a transformative acquisition. I still think blood is in the water over at THG (aka The Hut Group and MyProtein). That large transaction could be accompanied by a spin off its Glanbia Performance Nutrition division into a standalone company with a dual listing in the United States and Ireland. That's the kind of legacy creating move that Hugh McGuire likely pitched to the board during the interview process…or at least be something living rent free in his head. Hugh McGuire (ASIJ 2020) Marketing Intern Hugh is a recent graduate of the ASIJ class of 2020. Before graduating, he attended ASIJ for 13 years, joining the community back in Kindergarten. He was born in London, England, but moved to Japan soon thereafter at the age of 4. He is the son of a Japanese mother and an American father and is one of four brothers in the family, all of whom attended ASIJ (Kai ‘14, Ian ‘17, Lee ‘22). His two older brothers Kai and Ian both graduated from ASIJ in 2014 and 2017, respectively, and his younger brother Lee is still at ASIJ and is currently a junior in high school. Hugh is also bilingual, speaking both Japanese and English. At ASIJ, Hugh played varsity basketball for three years and was very involved in volunteer clubs in high school. As a junior, he started a club with the goal of breaking the barrier between international schools and local Japanese schools. The club, appropriately named Tokyo Sports Outreach, hosts Japanese elementary schools and pre-schools for youth sports clinics and has successfully hosted schools such as Musashino Gakuin Elementary School and Aoyama Gakuin Elementary School. Hugh was planning on attending Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts, this past fall but decided to take a gap year due to the worsening state of COVID-19 in the United States. During his gap year, he has been interning for a professional basketball team in Tokyo, Japan, called the Earthfriends Tokyo Z in the B.League, primarily aiding in marketing and operations. Recently my friend Hugh McGuire, the co-founder and Executive Director of the Rebus Foundation chatted about something we're both passionate about - increasing access to education and improving the learning experience for students of all ages through open educational resources.
Before any architecture project starts, there needs to be a client who has the vision to build something. Once they’ve committed to build, they’ll need some specialists to work through all of the mandatory building requirements. In Australia, these include the local planning scheme, national construction code, and some specific design guidelines. So with all of those requirements being handled by the professionals, what is the client’s role while all of this is going on? Some might think that they’re just meant to sit back until they’re called upon to pay a bill or attend a design meeting? But the client had the vision to have the project built in the first place. So does that mean they get their monies worth by getting involved in every single aspect of the architectural process as it moves from one consultant to the next? Or would this slow down the project team from achieving their aspirations? In this episode of Hearing Architecture, we’ve asked architects from around Australia what makes a good client and what a client can do to get the most out of an architect. This episode of Hearing Architecture featured the following guests: Damian Madigan, Rod Simpson, Sue Dugdale, Peter Stutchberry, Justin Carrier, Kylee Schoonens, Steven Postmus, Shaneen Fantin, Belinda Allwood, Professor Philip Thalis, Rob McGauran, Jo Rees, Lee Hillam, Dik Jarman, Yvette Breytenbach, Jefa Greenaway, Hugh Mcguire, and Andrew Maynard. The interviews in this episode were produced around Australia by EmAGN committee members: Jamileh Jahangiri, Daniel Hall, Kirsty Volz, Kali Marnane, Chris Morley, Sam McQueeney, Reece Currey, Brad Wetherall, Jess Beaver, Bede Taylor, Rebecca Webster, and Daniel Moore. The AIA production team was Daniela Crawley, Stacey Rodda, Monique Woodward, and Thom McKenzie. Australians love to renovate their homes. You can tell we do because there are so many DIY TV programs that show us how to give it a go. But when you watch programs like Grand Designs, The Block, or House Rules there’s rarely an architect to be seen. With many programs like this out there a lot of people might assume that design, renovation, and building can all be easily undertaken by anyone at home as long as they have the time and money. Now, this is true to some extent, and a lot of people have a great deal of fun renovating their homes. But it might be hard to know how far you can go yourself before things start to get dangerous or it becomes more costly than if some professionals had taken it on. In this episode of Hearing Architecture we’ve asked architects from around Australia how architects are portrayed to the public and how clients can be involved in the design process. This episode of Hearing Architecture featured the following guests: Damian Madigan, Rod Simpson, Sue Dugdale, Lee Hillam, Peter Stutchberry, Justin Carrier, Steven Postmus, Nicholas Braun, Jane Caught, Timothy Moore, Shaneen Fantin, Belinda Allwood, Joe Agius, Rob McGauran, Jo Rees, Dik Jarman, Hugh Mcguire, and Andrew Maynard. Hugh McGuire: Interview with Hugh McGuire, Founder of LibriVox.org | Steve Hargadon | May 11 2011 by Steve Hargadon
Hugh McGuire is co-founder and Executive Director of the Rebus Foundation, the founder of Librivox, and the founder of Pressbooks, which helps publishers and authors easily create professionally designed print and ebook editions of their books. Before that, he worked in the world of electric power and alternative energy, but he's been trying to bring the world of the book together with the (better) world of the web since about 2005. He's particularly driven by the intersection of book publishing, open licensing, and distributed collaboration. In this episode, we talk about the idealism that led to (and fed from) his founding of Librivox, and how his experiences with PressBooks and Rebus differed from that initial example. Also, how for-profit and not-for-profit organisations differ, how his vision for the future of the web has developed, and the support mechanisms that a 'vision' person like Hugh needs to put in place to ensure that things actually get done!
What is the future of content for higher ed, and what lessons can we learn from the evolution of file sharing? Hugh McGuire, co-founder of Rebus Foundation, joins Greg Bauch for a conversation on content accessibility and the possibilities that exist with Open Textbooks.
Hugh McGuire has been building tools and communities to bring books onto the open web since about 2005. He's the founder of LibriVox.org (free public domain audiobooks, made by volunteers from around the world), Pressbooks (an open source book publishing platform built on WordPress). He's also Executive Director of the Rebus Foundation, a non-profit that is building the infrastructure to support books on the open web, by: building a new collaborative model for creating and publishing Open Educational Resources (OER), and building an open platform for scholarly reading. He lives and works in Montreal, Canada. Hugh is the co-editor, with Brian O'Leary, of Book: A Futurist's Manifesto — Essays from the bleeding edge of publishing (O'Reilly) and has talked about the future of publishing around the world, his work has appeared in various places in print, bits and audio, including: the New York Times, Forbes, the LA Times, BBC Radio, the New Yorker, CBC Radio, NPR, Techcrunch, Pando Daily and now, The Biblio File. We talk here about LibriVox's free audio books representing the ideas of the early internet, collaborative communities, bringing the book onto the internet and doing more than just selling them, PressBooks open source software, open textbooks in higher ed, new models of publishing, the Rebus Foundation rebuilding a new open publishing ecosystem, web-based collaboration, open reading platforms, academic publishing, the cost of textbooks skyrocketing, open textbook publishing, the Internet Archive, Brewster Kale, making all the world's information available for free, the value of low-cost education, crappy current literary fiction, eliminating online distractions and replacing Facebook and Twitter.

Welcome to episode #349 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. We are getting more regular when it comes to recording Media Hacks. In this semi-frequent podcast within this podcast we hold a roundtable conversation with Chris Brogan, C.C. Chapman, Hugh McGuire, Christopher S. Penn, Julien Smith and myself. We had a good run, but life became what it is, and it became a ruthless game of herding the unherdable cats. Well, thanks to Doodle, we're starting to get back into a flow with it. Welcome to episode #42 of Media Hacks. Unfortunately, Penn was not able to make the recording (and Smith jumped in mid-chat), but it's still chock-full of gabbing and inside baseball about everything from Internet culture and technology news to why the majority of us did not attend SXSW (but should have) and how tired some of us are of social media (and some who aren't). Welcome to episode #342 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. Does anyone remember Media Hacks? It was a semi-frequent podcast within this podcast that was a roundtable conversation with Chris Brogan, C.C. Chapman, Hugh McGuire, Christopher S. Penn, Julien Smith and myself. We had a good run, but life became what it is, and it became a ruthless game of herding the unherdable cats. Well, it's back. Welcome to episode #41 of Media Hacks. Unfortunately, Penn was not able to make the recording, but McGuire is in charge of getting dates all locked in using Doodle (so, this should happen more often). In this episode we discuss everything from the Internet of Things to how we're all feeling about new media (and where this is all going). We'll do it again soon (we promise). Welcome to episode #281 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. This is also episode #40 of Media Hacks. Joining me for this chat is C.C. Chapman, Hugh McGuire and Julien Smith. In a world of unconferences, crowdsourcing and Social Media, it's surprising how many people struggle with the messages coming out of the Occupy Wall Street movement. If anything, it is a testament to everything that has been built in these online channels for the past decade. In this episode, we look at the media, the messages and how - in a world of media fragmentation - we can't be freaked out when people's messages become fragmented as well. This is not so much about politics as it is about the media, messages and the social implications of power and publishing. Welcome to episode #279 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. I wish more people would read (more) books. In a world of Blog, Podcasts, Twitter, magazines and more, I still get the most value out of reading and thinking about a good book over anything else. If you've been playing along at home, you'll know that a frequent guest on the show (and one of the Media Hacks co-host) is Hugh McGuire. Along with starting one of the most interesting open source projects, LibriVox (for audio books based on books in the public domain), Hugh also works on book and publishing start-ups. He's currently got iambik and PressBooks rolling, but hasn't stopped there. Just recently, he launched a new book (which he co-edited with Brian O'Leary) for O'Reilly called, Book: A Futurist's Manifesto. The book publishing industry is going through dramatic change and digitization. With that comes some fascinating lessons for marketers and marketing. Enjoy the conversation... Welcome to episode #218 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. This is also episode #35 of Media Hacks. For this Labour Day weekend we managed to get C.C. Chapman, Hugh McGuire, Christopher S. Penn and myself on a call to discuss everything new and happening around all things media (and yes, new media). One of the core topics was how the Internet is dealing with the real-time Web and the implications this is happening across the media channels. So, yes, we're talking about newspapers, television and a world where everyone and anyone is an eye witness reporter. We also dive into a discussion about how apps are becoming a world where suddenly it looks more like a thousand AOLs blossoming verses an open Internet as we have know it to date. Welcome to episode #215 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. This is also episode #34 of Media Hacks. Hugh McGuire (Book Oven, Bite-Sized Edits, LibriVox), Julien Smith (co-author of Trust Agents, In Over Your Head) and I met for a sushi lunch and decided to record the latest episode of Media Hacks. We all agree that we love the ambient background noise (even the music) that comes from recording live - we hope you do too. We're not sure if it was the green tea or the sashimi that brought us down the rambling topics we cover, but it sure was heavy, intense and required most of us to get some fresh air right after recording. In this episode we look at everything from publishing, privacy, data and location to anonymity, net neutrality, circumcision (not a typo) and the future of media. The biggest thought: it's getting hard to opt-out of the online world and perhaps we have to review our own perceptions of ourselves. Enjoy the conversation... Julien feels that he can be like Seth Godin. People react to Social Media best when it's (a little) like mass media. We love traditional mass media headlines. NO longer ignoring baseline connections with people. It's a little about "how many" and little bit about "who" is following you. People, you should follow Hugh McGuire on Twitter. Hugh and Julien start making out because the music is so loud in the restaurant. Kindle makes some major news. Hugh still doesn't care. Google, Verizon and net-neutrality. In Google-Verizon Deal, Fears for Privacy. Google's Next Step Is Not Search. People steal music because it's easy. Selling content is always a more complex process. Julien thinks I had media training. I think I look like an idiot. Does the Internet eventually become a pipe? Is it possible that Google is using a position with Verizon to really just cut deals and beat the leveraging of others? Mobile is the important thing. Who are the big players and what is Microsoft's game? (full disclosure: Microsoft is a client's of Twist Image). Closed is great at the beginning but over time, open is better. The money is not in the advertising - it's in the data and the marketing information. You are being followed, tracked and recorded. Deal with it. Time for Obama to shut down WikiLeaks' Assange. Does the freedom of information threaten democracy. The Next Big Thing Online Could Well Be Anonymity. Think about what you publish. Now think about everything you search for being public. Does Julien have a rash? The social implications of publishing our lives online. Humankind has a history of making decisions for others without consent. Welcome to our universe. We get upset about what Google is doing, but the credit card companies know everything about you. Google is the ultimate media company. The philosophy of the media and the Internet. Welcome to episode #211 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. This is also episode #33 of Media Hacks. Instead of the usual phone conversation, Hugh McGuire, Julien Smith and I met up for an early morning breakfast at the infamous Bagels Etc... in beautiful Montreal. The conversation floated between mass media versus Social Media to looks at everything from how Old Spice is leveraging the convergence of the two, to why both Clay Shirky and Nicholas Carr have new business books that are well-worth reading (even though they both don't agree with one another). We also attempt to tackle the conversation over content and its value (re: pricing model) in our current society, and many other hacking media topics. As with most episodes of Media Hacks, some of the language is not safe for work (you have been warned). Enjoy the conversation... We need to divide the culture from the business model. Books do not need to so big anymore. The constraint is there to support the business not the content. This is not essential to the culture. Can we homogenize the content? What media gives more depth - a Blog or a business book? What is the best way to do something vs. the best way to make money (or whatever else you're trying to accomplish). We need to break free or experiment more with content. Welcome to episode #209 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. This is also episode #32 of Media Hacks. On the line is C.C. Chapman, Hugh McGuire, Christopher S. Penn and yours truly. In this episode, we celebrate the announcement of C.C.'s upcoming book, Content Rules (co-written with the truly awesome Ann Handley from MarketingProfs) which leads us down the rabbit hole into a conversation about content, authenticity, publishing (as usual) and how we all connect, create, curate and find content. And, in the end, none of us can figure out how to hold a phone the right way (who knew?). Beyond that we discuss devices and content and what this business may (or may not) look like. The value of links, retweets and web analytics. The homogenization of Social Media. Content has to be fun too. How the FCC Plans to Regulate Internet Lines via The Wall Street Journal. Filter, curate and crowdsourcing. How should publishing be different? Why it's ridiculous to argue about ghost blogging. Moving away from Google Reader to Twitter to really be "in the know". The challenge of RSS and syndication versus (or with) the real-time(ish) Web. The changing media habits of people. Google Buzz is also driving great content tips and ideas (at least, C.C. says so). So, what's the buzz about Google Buzz? It turns out you were holding your phone the wrong way. You can never make an early adopter happy. Remember, all issues are resolved through a software update. Welcome to episode #207 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. It's not about whether or not banner advertising works, it's about how we are designing the Internet. More often than not, publishers create pages that are better for their advertisers than they are for their consumers. When that happens, consumers vote with their clicks, their Facebook status updates and with their tweets. The model for the Internet, Marketing and communications is more complex than ever. In this episode of Media Hacks, Christopher S. Penn, Hugh McGuire and myself explore some of the bigger changes that are happening online right now. This includes new developments like Apple's Retina Display as well as what email can (and should) do better. Enjoy the conversation... Ninja gives us the rundown on the economy. It's time to shut down the government for twenty years and start printing money. ...And with all of that, the release of the new iPhone still crashed both the AT&T and Apple website. We are getting tired of being poor and we're not going to take it. We are fine with living in debt... especially if it's cheap. The new iBook shelf can scrape email and work in PDF formats. Once again, we're talking about location. A new conversation about a smarter email system. Welcome to episode #193 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. This is also episode #26 of Media Hacks. The Ninja (aka Christopher S. Penn) talks about his new gig at Blue Sky Factory, but the main thrust of the conversation is about what happens to a company when someone with a major personal brand (like Ninja had for the financial aid industry) leaves and starts in another industry? What happens to the brand? How trusted is the personal brand of the individual? Along with that we graze through a bunch of topics from mobile and iPhone apps to the pending launch of the iPad. We even take a sneak peek at where C.C. Chapman won't be during SXSW (hint: it's in line waiting to get into parties) and have a chat about the power of email for Marketers (and where it's going), plus lots more. Enjoy the conversation... Welcome to episode #180 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. This is also episode #21 of Media Hacks. We have a pretty full crew on this latest episode of Media Hacks. C.C. Chapman, Hugh McGuire, Julien Smith and me tackle everything from the language we use to augmented reality. It's a lively debate about our new world as we all seem to grapple with how to make a Podcast something more and something different than just another radio show. We also look at how mobile and online social networks are quickly becoming one as more and more gaming-type components get added to the fray. This Podcast is not work-safe (it rarely is when Julien's involved). Enjoy the conversation... Here it is: Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast - Episode #180 - Host: Mitch Joel. Online Social Networks that create a more interesting life. C.C. like Gowalla too. Is asking, "what's the point of foursquare?" the same as when most of us asked, "what's the point of Twitter?" a year and a half ago? Grappling with the use of naughty language and how it can affect both reputation and growing audience. Is swearing and "Selling out" related? Tiger Woods forgot about his Digital Footprint (or didn't care). A current view of privacy. If this was not real enough, let's look at Augmented Reality. Lego Augmented Reality. CNBC - Inside The Mind of Google. Our ever-growing hunger and love for more information. Julien drops off. Welcome to episode #178 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. This is also episode #20 of Media Hacks and it's live from New York City. In a very rare moment, the entire Media Hacks crew - Chris Brogan, C.C. Chapman, Christopher S. Penn, Julien Smith and myself (with the exception of Hugh McGuire) - converged in New York City for the Web 2.0 Expo (and Web 2.Open). Wednesday night after dinner, we all met up at the Roger Smith Hotel (in Julien's chambers) and recorded the following rambles, tangents, swear words and non-relevant-to-marketing conversations. That being said, it got interesting, we wavered, we switched, we debated and we made a ton of inside jokes. In the end, the conversation looks at the audience, the new media and those swimming in the deep end of it all. Enjoy the conversation (but keep in mind this is not work safe)... Welcome to episode #174 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. This is also episode #18 of Media Hacks. Welcome to episode #139 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. This is something new. It is something different. I was having lunch with Julien Smith (In Over Your Head) and Hugh McGuire (LibriVox - The Book Oven) and expressed my desire to start another Podcast. I wanted to have a conversation about media and what's happening in these new channels with some of the people I consider friends and that I admire. Here is the first strike at it. The core group is Chris Brogan, C.C. Chapman (Managing The Gray), Hugh McGuire, Christopher S. Penn (Financial Aid Podcast - Marketing Over Coffee), Julien Smith and myself. Whenever we decide to record, there may be all of these people, only some of us, and other guests as well (only time will tell). This week, we've got Brogan and Smith on the horn. Four more things: 1. there is some colourful language in this conversation, so it is not work-safe. 2. This show does not have it's own name yet, so it will be housed here. We'll see how it goes. 2. I'd love your thoughts on this conversation format. Please do let me know. 4. Enjoy the conversation...
