Tired of wrestling with outlets and extension cords just to vacuum a pool? We dig into the new battery that turns the VacDaddy's 55 GPM suction into a truly portable solution and lay out exactly where this tool shines: routine service, storm cleanups, shallow features, and green pool recoveries. Without sacrificing power, the battery removes the biggest friction point—finding a plug—while keeping what pros already love: bag-based debris capture that keeps fine dirt out of the customer's filter system. We break down real-world specs that matter on a route: roughly 15 pounds, about three hours to charge, and close to two hours of runtime at full power thanks to safer ternary lithium chemistry. That swap also streamlines the loadout by replacing heavier transformers, making weight nearly apples to apples and the workflow simpler. Then we go deeper into the VacDaddy's modular design. The vacuum-to-waste adapter turns the unit into a focused cleanup pump in minutes, ideal for post-windstorm debris or settling after an algae treatment. A shallow water adapter unlocks fountains and water features by letting you submerge the unit and vacuum with a short hose and manual head.Along the way, we set honest expectations about filtration and performance. With felt bags around 75 microns and optional 200-micron bags, the VacDaddy handles leaves and typical dirt well, while ultra-fine dust is best managed with vacuum-to-waste. We also talk through who gets the most value: managers equipping employees for consistency, techs dealing with weak filtration systems, and pros who want one tool to cover manual vacs, targeted waste removal, and feature work. Add a few forward-looking ideas—like a compact cart to carry battery, unit, and hoses—and you've got a kit that can replace multiple devices on the truck. If you're ready to make your route faster and more flexible, give this breakdown a listen, share it with your team, and tell us where a portable 55 GPM vac would save you the most time. Marty introduces new information about a potential new battery integration in future Vision Pro headsetsToday's ProNote: Patent for a new battery integrationApple Reinvents Battery Design for Vision Pro Headset to Improve Efficiencyhttps://www.macobserver.com/news/apple-reinvents-battery-design-for-vision-pro-headset-to-improve-efficiency/ Apple has patented a new battery integration method for its Vision Pro headset, aiming to improve both power efficiency and portability.• The innovation embeds batteries directly into the headset's structural guide rails, which adjust the optical modules. This design boosts battery capacity without increasing the device's size or weight.• By turning hollow guide rails into battery housings, Apple eliminates the need for separate battery casings. This streamlines the internal layout, reduces complexity, lowers weight, and enhances packaging efficiency.• The guide rails still allow smooth interpupillary distance adjustments, maintaining functionality while providing energy storage.• The rails use composite materials for thermal resistance and mechanical strength, supporting both durability and reliable battery performance.• This embedded battery system can work alongside a main power source: it allows the headset to run in low-power modes, provides backup power during reboots, and helps retain memory functions when unplugged.• Each guide rail connects directly to the logic board, and configurations can range from one to four rails—enabling flexible and modular power management for future headset models.• The design is adaptable for different uses, supporting variations in battery number and placement based on specific product requirements.• Apple's approach addresses the main challenge for XR headsets—balancing high power demands with lightweight, comfortable form factors—potentially setting a new industry direction for more ergonomic and portable devices.• This advance could be a major step towards solving the persistent problems of power limits and bulkiness in augmented and virtual reality headsets, without sacrificing user comfort or key features.Email us at ThePodTalkNetwork@gmail.com. Lithium-manganese-rich (LMR) batteries could offer a rare combination in energy storage: high energy density at lower costs. They swap much of the expensive nickel for abundant, affordable manganese. But technical hurdles — like poor cycle life, voltage decay, and long formation time — kept them on the sidelines. Now GM says it's solved these challenges. In May, it announced plans to mass produce LMR batteries starting in 2028. In energy density, the new chemistry would land between the two major alternative chemistries in the U.S., NMC and LFP. So what does this new entrant mean for the U.S. battery market? In this episode, Shayle talks to Kurt Kelty, VP of battery, propulsion, and sustainability — and a 30-year battery industry veteran who led Tesla's battery development for over a decade. Shayle and Kurt cover topics like: What parts of the U.S. battery supply chain to on-shore or near-shore The tradeoffs between LFP, LMR, and high-nickel chemistries The roles that Kurt sees for all three in the market Shifting production lines and supply chains from NMC to LMR Why LFP may still outcompete LMR in the stationary market Resources: General Motors: Why LMR batteries will change the outlook for the EV market AutomotiveDive: GM, LG Energy target commercializing manganese-rich batteries for EVs WSJ: An Ex-Tesla Engineer Is Turning EVs Into Affordable Family Cars Catalyst: What happened at Northvolt? Our guest on this week's episode is Andrei Quinn-Barabanov, Supply Chain Industry Practice Lead and Senior Director with Moody's. It was five years ago this month that our world was rocked with the Covid-19 virus. That is when businesses and schools closed and we were all stuck at home waiting for things to get better. All the while, supply chains kept us fed and happy at home, for the most part. Our supply chains had to adjust and they are still feeling the effects of the pandemic five years later. Our guest reflects on how supply chains reacted then and how they now will never be the same. Most of our editorial staff was at ProMat 2025 this past week in Chicago – a huge supply chain show and the largest material handling exhibition in North America. And everywhere we looked, there were robotics and automation systems to be seen. Most distribution facilities and factories will eventually end up with a number of different types of automation and robotics within their facilities. So, the big challenge is to integrate all of these disparate systems to play nice with one another. We look at a couple of "orchestration" solutions on display at ProMat.All of the automation solutions exhibited at ProMat take power. In this episode, we look at some innovative energy solutions that keep those automation systems operating at peak performance. We also discuss an energy management solution that can potentially lower the utility bills of facilities.Supply Chain Xchange also offers a podcast series called Supply Chain in the Fast Lane. Jamie Hagen's got the inside scoop, but won't divulge the name of the new Mack tractor model set to be debuted next month in New York in this year of Mack's 125th anniversary as a company. Small Fleet owner Hagen has actually driven one hand-built production model already around the company's test track hidden behind the walls, and come June he expects to be leasing one of the first production units in an arrangement with Mack's marketing arm -- it'll add to his all-Mack fleet, South Dakota-headquartered Hell Bent Xpress, among finalists in 2024 for Overdrive's Small Fleet Championship: https://www.overdriveonline.com/small-fleet-champ/article/15704803/small-fleet-champ-four-finalists-to-square-off The new truck will add 1 to Hell Bent's power-unit count, currently sitting where it was back when we last spoke around the Small Fleet Champ program's conclusion in November, at 9 trucks, so there's big things ahead for Hagen and Hell Bent, no doubt. Yet the new Mack wasn't the principal reason we brought him in for this edition of Overdrive Radio -- rather, the forward-looking small fleet owner happens to be the first U.S. owner to install a new-to-the-U.S. auxiliary air-conditioning unit in the sleeper of one of his Macks. That's the Fresco 9000 MaXX system built by an Italian manufacturer and powered by U.S.-based Dragonfly Energy's Battle Born Batteries Lithium Iron Phosphate battery to deliver cooling power in the warmer months: https://www.overdriveonline.com/gear/product/15684579/autoclima-fresco-9000-maxx-batterypowered-auxiliary-ac-unit-hitting-us-shores Hagen walks through the unit's design and, along the way, his rationale for jumping into the modular, portable system after years forgoing alternative A/C for his mostly upper Midwest regional fleet. (Yes, he's got auxiliary heat in the form of Webasto bunk heaters.) If you'll be in attendance at the big Mid-America Trucking Show later this month, too, Hagen will be part of a panel discussion opening the event on Thursday, March 27, about small trucking business issues. It also features a past Overdrive Small Fleet Champ in Silver Creek Transportation's Jason Cowan, among many others: https://truckingshow.com/opening-breakfast/ Hear more about that in the podcast, likewise the story of how a 2023 Mack Anthem in the small fleet of Hell Bent Xpress came to be the first truck to get an install of the Fresco 9000 MaXX battery-powered alternative air conditioning system, performed by the way by Jim Fowler and his team at Michigan MD Alignment. The forecast for 2025 was also increased by 0.1 percentage point from the October estimate, to 1.1%. Source: rt.com BMW i3 Owner Quoted Over $70,000 for New Battery Last year, the owner of a 2015 BMW i3 REx was reportedly quoted over $71,000 to have a new battery pack installed. For reference, that particular model would have retailed somewhere around $50,000 brand new. While we've seen some staggering high prices being entertained for EVs in need of a new battery pack this has to be one of more egregious examples on record. According to an invoice from a Seattle-area BMW service center shared on Reddit, the owner was quoted $64,588 for parts last August. After taxes, that amounted to $71,208 and that's before anyone bothered to factor in labor. The invoice has since been shared by CarBuzz and is making the rounds as the latest reason to feel uneasy about EV ownership. The post was followed by (mostly i3) drivers sharing similar accounts of how much they were asked to spend on similar battery jobs. Most cited repair bills around $11,000 with parts and labor included. However, there were a few individuals claiming to have been quoted upwards of $30,000 for having a fresh battery installed into their BMW. Source: thetruthaboutcars.com New Looming EV Disaster Begins to Emerge the U.S. could end up dependent on unfriendly nations for materials for all those batteries. Then there's the fact that the nation's grid simply can't support all that recharging – California already has been sending out advisories for owners not to charge. And then there's the limited range, extended recharging times, both worsened by bad weather. But now a report in the Washington Times explains that those batteries are heavy, and EVs can weight up to 50% more than internal combustion motor vehicles. And that weight damages roads, bridges and parking garages, with those vehicles easily plowing through safety guardrails while posing a higher danger to other drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists traveling the same routes. “The problems associated with EVs are poised to grow as more consumers purchase the cars under the Biden adm...
Air New Zealand's new battery-powered plane won't carry any passengers. The airline's bought an electric Alia aircraft, which is expected to join the fleet from 2026. The aircraft weighs three tonnes and its battery takes about an hour to charge. Chief sustainability officer Kiri Hannifin says they'll fly Alia on routes of about 150km and it'll be cargo only. "We just want to do smaller routes- this is all a big learning exercise for us, so we're going to keep it small to start with." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In the dynamic realm of electric vehicle (EV) technology, QuantumScape, a Silicon Valley startup, is emerging as a key competitor to Tesla Inc. with its innovative solid-state batteries. These batteries, boasting three times the energy density of Tesla's lithium-ion cells, offer faster charging times and a safer, more sustainable design. This development could significantly alter the EV industry, making electric cars more appealing and efficient. QuantumScape's solid-state batteries use a solid ceramic material instead of the traditional liquid electrolyte, enhancing energy density and driving range while reducing fire hazards common in lithium-ion batteries. The company claims these batteries can recharge to 80% capacity in just 15 minutes, addressing a major concern for EV consumers - long charging times. This technology also promises reductions in production costs, contributing to a more competitive EV market as automakers strive to meet increasing demand and stringent emissions standards.
