We meet Alev Ebüzziya Siesbye (b. 1938, Istanbul, TR) is a ceramic artist known for her refined, monochrome stoneware bowls, which she has been producing for nearly sixty years. Working with the ancient coiling technique and a traditional wooden kick wheel, Ebüzziya Siesbye creates vessels that bear the intimate marks of her hand, balancing density and spaciousness, firmness and fragility. Fired at high temperatures, her bowls possess a stone-like solidity, while their sharp-edged lips and small, recessed bases lend them an impression of levitation. Though often unadorned, some pieces feature delicate horizontal lines along the rim to, as the artist describes, “prevent them from lifting off the ground.”Ebüzziya Siesbye studied sculpture at the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts before working at ceramic studios in Höhr-Grenzhausen, DE, and Istanbul. In 1963, she moved to Denmark to join the Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Manufactory, later founding her first independent studio in Copenhagen in 1969. She has lived and worked in Paris since 1987. On today's show we are talking about the elephant in the downtown. This is the property that was once a symbol of success that has now become a central embarrassment to the city. It seems that almost every city has one, and in some cases more than one. In Houston it's the One City Center Building with 600,000 SF that is 80% vacant. In Portland Oregon it's the 45 story office tower affectionately called The Big Pink that is now 50% vacant and partly over-run with homeless people sleeping on vacant floors. That building just sold for $0.20 on the dollar. In Chicago it's the old post office. Then the decision points along the way that I've made. And, fortunately, I never made a decision that was so devastating that it, you know, shut me down. The most fun job I think I had of all was when we decided to open our other offices at BSG, and I was in charge of opening our remote offices. I just learned a lot about how you do business around the country. I learned how to negotiate with New Yorkers, people in Atlanta, Dallas, et cetera. The most important thing I've found is Houston is the easiest place to do business. 28:08: In Houston, people are generally welcoming to people that come from somewhere else because it's been a melting pot for so long.Why meeting in person matters for entrepreneurs28:52: If you want to get together with other entrepreneurs and bounce ideas off of them, or even build teamwork within your group, I think two things. We used to have quarterly meetings where we'd bring everybody into a central location, and it's not inexpensive. And once a quarter, we're also bringing the leadership from various places and having a strategy session all together. And certainly, you can do it by Zoom, but there's nothing like getting together, going out, and having a few drinks that night or dinner or whatever. Now, for someone like you, who—you're in Houston and nobody else is—you need to make a list of people you're going to have lunch with every day. Don't have lunch in your office. Go out three or four times a week and have lunch with somebody that's different and new.Why listening matters for entrepreneurs seeking success07:23: Each entrepreneur is, especially if they're in a startup, unique. They have some traits in common. They're generally stubborn. They don't listen as well as they should, and so you have to figure out if they're willing to listen at all. If not, you move on. If they're willing to listen, then you're able to give them advice, and it's based on—do they like—and a CEO doesn't have it all. They may be technical, they may be good at sales, they may be good at marketing, but they're rarely good at all of those. This episode is full of Friday whimsy, as Andy and Brendan cover a variety of topics to send you into the weekend. Andy begins by asking questions about Ryder Cup eligibility for the latest honorary Texan. Brendan reveals that Thursdays are now known as "Diet Friday" after sharing today's Masters Fact of the Day. Speaking of Masters facts, Andy then provides an early weather update for Augusta, making sure he gets out in front of this upcoming catnip. After a recap of PJ's night at a Mumford & Sons concert on Wednesday night, updates are provided on the Hero Indian Open and the Houston Open. DLF was featured on Design Disasters on Thursday morning after caddies wrote in to complain about the 17th hole, and Matt Jordan is in contention with his standard first-round 69. In Houston, Tosti finds himself in the early lead, making Andy wonder what would happen if Tosti found himself in the field at Augusta National. LIV Golf announced its own Creator Classic, with a similar group of creators playing alongside pros at LIV Miami. PGA Tour member Wes Bryan is playing with Dustin Johnson, which has Andy do some journalism to ask if he'll be suspended from the PGA Tour as a result of his participation. At long last, some Golf Advice emails are read before Brendan has a quick Flashback Friday segment about Vijay Singh and how international players adjusted to the Houston Open in the early 2000s.
