This week on the Deadpod we have a very nice latter day show from Spring 1993. This comes to us from the Nassau Coliseum on April 4, 1993, and it is a Sunday night show.  Some of the highlights of the first set include a very nice Sugaree (Jerry's voice is a bit frail at times but he carries it off the entire show). 'When I Paint My Masterpiece' is always welcome in my book. Jerry does an excellent version of 'So Many Roads' and the 'Bird Song' after 'Eternity' is a sweet way to wind up the first set.    Grateful Dead Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum Uniondale, NY 4/4/1993 - Sunday One     In The Midnight Hour   Sugaree > Walkin' Blues   Dire Wolf   When I Paint My Masterpiece   So Many Roads   Eternity > Bird Song  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod041224.mp3 "So many roads, I tell you New York to San Francisco So many roads I know All I want is one to take me home"

Willie Chambers (born March 3, 1938) is a singer, guitarist, and former member of The Chambers Brothers, a rock band in the 1960s with hits "In The Midnight Hour", "I Can't Turn You Loose", and "Time Has Come Today". He continues to be a regular attraction at various venues in Los Angeles and further afield.   Early career Edit Originally from Carthage, Mississippi, the Chambers Brothers first honed their skills as members of the choir in their Baptist church. This arrangement ended in 1952 when the eldest brother, George, was drafted into the Army. George relocated to Los Angeles after his discharge, and his brothers soon joined him. Beginning in 1954, the foursome played gospel and folk music throughout the Southern California region, but remained little known until 1965 when they began performing in New York City. Consisting of George (September 26, 1931 – October 12, 2019)[5] on washtub bass (later on bass guitar Danelectro and Gibson Thunderbird), Lester (b. April 13, 1940) on harmonica, and Willie (b. March 3, 1938) and Joe (b. August 22, 1942) on guitar, the group started to venture outside the gospel circuit, playing at coffeehouses that booked folk acts. They played at places like The Ash Grove, a very popular Los Angeles folk club. It became one of their favorite haunts and brought them into contact with Hoyt Axton, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Reverend Gary Davis, and Barbara Dane. When Dane spotted the brothers there, she knew they would be perfect to do these freedom songs that people wanted to hear then. Dane became a great supporter, performing and recording with the brothers. With the addition of Brian Keenan (January 28, 1943 – October 5, 1985) on drums, Dane took them on tour with her and introduced them to Pete Seeger, who helped put the Chambers Brothers on the bill of the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. One of the songs they performed, "I Got It", appeared on the Newport Folk Festival 1965 compilation LP, which was issued on the Vanguard label. They were becoming more accepted in the folk community, but, like many on the folk circuit, were looking to electrify their music and develop more of a rock and roll sound. Joe Chambers recalled in a May 1994 Goldmine article that people at the Newport Folk Festival were breaking down fences and rushing to the stage. "Newport had never seen or heard anything like that." After the group finished and the crowd finally settled down, the MC came up and said "Whether you know it or not, that was rock 'n' roll." That night they played at a post-concert party for festival performers and went to a recording session of the newly electrified Bob Dylan. Shortly after appearing at Newport, the group released its debut album, People Get Ready. The group recorded "All Strung Out Over You" which was composed by Rudy Clark. It was released on Columbia 4-43957 on December 19, 1966. It was rushed out by Columbia after the label had rejected an early version of "Time Has Come Today". "All Strung Out Over You" became a regional hit for the group which gave them the opportunity to re-record "The Time Has Come Today".

Fine versions of 'Attics' and 'Bobby McGee' follows, then the Chuck Berry 'Around and Around'. If Yankee Stadium is “the house that Babe Ruth built,” Stax Records is “the house that Booker T, and the MG's built.” Integral to that potent combination is MG rhythm guitarist extraordinaire Steve Cropper. As a guitarist, A & R man, engineer, producer, songwriting partner of Otis Redding, Eddie Floyd and a dozen others and founding member of both Booker T. and the MG's and The Mar-Keys, Cropper was literally involved in virtually every record issued by Stax from the fall of 1961 through year end 1970.Such credits assure Cropper of an honored place in the soul music hall of fame. As co-writer of (Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay, Knock On Wood and In The Midnight Hour, Cropper is in line for immortality. Born on October 21, 1941 on a farm near Dora, Missouri, Steve Cropper moved with his family to Memphis at the age of nine. In Missouri he had been exposed to a wealth of country music and little else. In his adopted home, his thirsty ears amply drank of the fountain of Gospel, R & B and nascent Rock and Roll that thundered over the airwaves of both black and white Memphis radio. Bit by the music bug, Cropper acquired his first mail order guitar at the age of 14. Personal guitar heroes included Tal Farlow, Chuck Berry, Jimmy Reed, Chet Atkins, Lowman Pauling of the Five Royales and Billy Butler of the Bill Doggett band.

Steve expresses his appreciation for European music fans and their dedication to follow the uncredited musicians “behind the music.” He also tells the story of being introduced to his (now) wife and the secret key to winning her over, which lead to turning a European concert tour with The Blues Brothers into their honeymoon.Performances:“In The Midnight Hour“ (Wilson Pickett) - Steve Cropper & Phil Vassar“(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay“ (Otis Reddint) - Steve Cropper & Phil VassarTo stay up to date with Steve Cropper, head on over to http://playitsteve.comMore info on Songs From The Cellar & details on how to watch the TV series can be found at https://www.songsfromthecellar.comKeep up with Steve Cropper on Social media at:FacebookInstagramTwitterSpotifyFollow Phil Vassar and Songs From The Cellar at:FacebookInstagramTwitterYouTubeSpotifyCheck out more awesome podcasts at:American Songwriter Podcast NetworkAnd go!

This week we end the 'weekend at the beach' .. and the Days Between... with the second set from the band's performance at the Ventura County Fairgrounds on July 22, 1984.   The boys break out a rockin' Samson and Delilah in honor of the Sunday, then make a sharp turn into 'Ship of Fools'. Following that, Brent breaks out 'I Just Want to Make Love To You' for the first time the band has played it since 1966. The heart of this second set goes to the Terrapin>Drumz>Space>Morning Dew that follows.. strong and out there! A nice Throwing Stones> Not Fade Away follows and the band treats the fans to a double encore of 'In the Midnight Hour' and 'Brokedown Palace'. A nice way to end the Summer Tour of 1984.. I hope you agree.       Grateful Dead Ventura County Fairgrounds Ventura, CA 7/22/84 - Sunday     Two     Samson And Delilah [7:20] ; Ship Of Fools [7:10] ; I Just Want To Make Love To You [4:57] > Man Smart (Woman Smarter) [5:54] ; Terrapin Station [12:50] > Drums [9:27] > Space [11:07] > Morning Dew [10:36] > Throwing Stones [8:29] > Not Fade Away [9:46] Encore     In The Midnight Hour [4:17] > Brokedown Palace [5:24]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod080720.mp3     'Love is Real .. Episode #66: At 76 years old, Steve Cropper is in ideal position to reflect on an abundant, history making life in music, and he does so in this week's show. It's a special edition taped on stage in front of an eager audience at Nashville's Who Knew at City Winery. The series features speakers from the local to the world famous, on matters of creativity, entrepreneurship and mission. And Steve Cropper and his history with Stax Records represent all of those in abundance. Cropper grew up in Memphis from the age of nine, getting his first guitar by mail order in 1955. He channeled the city's sounds - blues, R&B, gospel and SUN Records rock and roll - into the band the Mar-Keys and then into the studio band at Stax. That history-making ensemble became the recording and touring band Booker T & The M.G.s. Cropper wrote masterworks of the American soul songbook: “Knock On Wood,” “In The MIdnight Hour” and “Dock of the Bay.” We talk about all that and his subsequent career with the Blues Brothers in this in-depth interview.

Happy New Year!   As we look to put 2016 behind us, I decided to bring you a fine New Year's Eve performance from December 31st, 1989.  With a show like this I couldn't just bring you a first set so we have the entire performance this week. Naturally this performance has some special moments, as well as some quirks. They open wiht Sugar Magnolia - instead of saving it for the first sone of the new year. Touch follows, then a bouncy 'Man Smart'.. Bonnie Raitt joins the boys for 'Big Boss Man', very nicely done. Weir does a nice version of  'Memphis Blues Again' and the first set ends with a great 'Shakedown Street'. Bill Graham makes his entrance at midnight as a chicken ..and after the countdown the boys do a great Iko, Iko to usher in the new decade. They move the proceedings in a more psychedelic direction with 'Victim or the Crime'. Victim then dissolves into the swirl of Dark Star, which was still a huge rarity and while short, certainly was sweet. Drums and Space follows, then they go into the 'Dear Mr. Fantasy -Hey Jude' combo. They then turn to some rocking tunes to end the set with a 'Goin' Down the Road Feelin' Bad' into 'Throwing Stones' and then 'Not Fade Away'.. They return for a very nice set of encores.. Brokedown Palace leading into the closing Sunshine Daydream.. then return for a second encore with 'In The Midnight Hour' to close a long and happy show..     Oakland Coliseum, Oakland CA (12/31/89) Sugar Magnolia Touch of Grey Man Smart/Woman Smarter Big Boss Man Stuck Inside of Mobile Shakedown Street Iko Iko Victim or the Crime Dark Star drums Dear Mr. Fantasy Hey Jude Reprise Goin' Down the Road Feelin' Bad Throwin' Stones Not Fade Away Brokedown Palace Sunshine Daydream Midnight Hour   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod123016.mp3   I hope the music brings you some joy and light, as it does me, no matter what life throws at us.   Thanks for your support and have a safe and very happy New Year!

This week's Deadpod features a fine second set from November 21st, 1985 at the Kaiser Auditorium in Oakland CA. Energetic and well-played throughout this one features a fine set list with two songs that would never again be played by the band, 'She Belongs to Me' and 'Walkin' The Dog'... They open with a wonderful 'Shakedown Street' that rather oddly, goes into a great 'Crazy Fingers'.. I've read that the curtain went up behind the band to a wonderful 'Blues from Allah' mural at that point in the show.... this goes into a nicely played 'Playin' In the Band' with a great jazzy jam leading into the final GD version of 'She Belongs to Me'.. love hearing Garcia sing this.. following drums and space they go into 'The Other One' without the bombs.. Wharf Rat follows then a return to Playin' in the Band and a maniacal 'Gimme Some Lovin' flows into 'In The Midnight Hour'.. the boys return for the 'Walkin' the Dog' encore.. whew!   Grateful Dead Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center Oakland, CA 11/21/85 - Thursday   Two Shakedown Street -> Crazy Fingers -> Playing In The Band -> She Belongs To Me -> Drums -> Space -> The Other One-> Wharf Rat -> Playing In The Band -> Gimme Some Lovin' -> In The Midnight Hour Encore Walking The Dog   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod112015.mp3   May the music bring peace and light.
