Tech Coach Question of the Week I am moving into a new Instructional Technology Coach position (part-time) for next year.  We are a rural school district in Maple, WI with two elementary schools, one middle school and one high school.  My job description is basically to help teachers use the district issued technology effectively. Now, my question. How on earth did you gauge who and where your support is most needed at the beginning of the year?  I know some people have done survey's and I know most of our staff here at the elementary level well enough to know their tech needs.  Any other ways to gauge how to help teachers at the beginning of the year? I know most of us are focused on closing out our year - I am, too!  I just want to be ready since I only work part-time next year and I want my time here to be beneficial to our teachers! How Do You Determine What Type of Coaching Your Teachers Need? Administrative Conversations Set up frequent conversations with your administrators to learn their goals and what they would like to see happening in the classrooms. Staff Surveys A basic staff survey at the beginning of the year is nice but ... keep it brief and to the point. Classroom Walkthroughs Coaches should be popping into classrooms on a regular basis to see what is happening, lend a hand and build a rapport with both teachers and students. Co-Teaching One of the best ways to help build trust with teachers is to create a lesson that can be taught together. Staying Positive Always remember that the job is not easy and one that is difficult both physically and mentally. Staying Alert Always keep your eyes and ears open for the next situation that might present itself to you. Be available Forming the relationship to assist them with some little things at first in order to build trust and be able to observe what some of the needs might be. Lunchtime / Break-Time conversations  - (Or Sometimes Gripe Sessions) Be an active listener; sometimes gripe sessions can really be a call for help.  “I can't believe we have to share our lesson plans with the principal” - showing them how to effectively use a Shared Drive or shared folder in google would be a quick and practical way to get your foot in their door. Normal Observation through day-to-day interactions, what comes up in meetings, etc. Keep a private journal of what you see and observe in the classroom. Not Coaching One of the best things you can do is to just be a friend to your teachers.  Sometimes the best coaching opportunities come out of non educational conversastions. Don’t miss this vblog on YouTube or catch our Read This segment of our One Thing Series podcast--books you need to read to lead better and grow faster. Featured Author: Jennie Magiera Featured Book: Courageous Edventures: Navigating Obstacles to Discover Classroom Innovation Here’s Why Every Principal Leader, Instructional Technology Coach, and Curriculum Specialist Must Read This Corwin Book by Jennie Magiera: Courageous Edventures is a great book for all educators. Why? It’s real in that it’s written by a former teacher, and it blends the challenges that are associated with using technology in the classroom with how to overcome them successfully. The author, Jennie Magiera, now the Global Head of Education Impact at Google, tells a common story, found within many schools--a story where technology is available, but woefully underemployed and arguably misunderstood. Fortunately, she also provides clear ways on how to excel at using these tools to transform teaching and learning. This month, our focus is on innovation and learning, particularly women in leadership who are making a significant impact. Jennie is one of those individuals who embraces change leadership through innovation. You can’t miss our interview with her, which uncovers a great deal of her stance on school and district leadership. Her story is found among many early adopters who discover the power of a new teaching tool, “terrifying and confusing.” In this case, Jenny realized early on that technology in the classroom, when used well, can radically improve student learning. However, it wasn’t an easy journey. Courageous Edventures is organized into four parts that we believe make it a great read and very user friendly. Learning from reading is our goal, and it is why we feature very specific books for educational leaders. The four parts of this book create a journey and require readers to engage with the content as a measure of growth. Charting Your Course Navigating Your Problems Sailing into the Great Beyond Reflecting on Your Edventure Each part of Courageous Edventures is written as a journey and carries the reader to the destination. There are very practical models introduced throughout the book, such as the SAMR model or the Teacher Innovation Exploration Plan (TIEP). These models are important because they guide the development of the reader toward something that they can actually use in practice in terms of making a difference in their classroom and school. Another aspect of this book that truly resonated with us is the Critical Friends section. Our friend and Chief Ruckus Maker, Danny Bauer of Better Leaders Better Schools, has long championed the power of belonging to a mastermind group for support, connectedness, and intentional growth. Having critical friends is a tremendous way to grow as a professional because, among other things, accountability is a key aspect of the relationship. We’ll end this post on one of Jennie’s tips, which you’ll find early in the book: “Loyalty to Students Over All Else.” When our purpose eclipses everything, it’s easy to find courage to do those things that frighten us. Putting students first is really what this book is about; technology is the just one of the great ways that we can get it done! We hope to hear from you about your favorite parts of the book, our blog, and the interview. Please comment below. Follow, like, and share. The Counter Narrative: Changing the Way We Talk (and think) About Education

Welcome to the Counter Narrative Podcast, a show designed to change the way we talk, and think, about education. By sharing stories of successes and triumphs, we aim to challenge the dominant narrative that often negatively portrays our disenfranchised populations. I'm your host, Charles Williams. An educator for 15 years, a current school principal in Chicago, and an educational consultant. In this episode, I chat with P. Sloan Joseph an instructional leader with over seventeen years of experience working with grades K4-12 in the areas of school & classroom culture (diversity, equity, inclusion, engagement) and technology. She has a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (SC State University) and a Master of Arts in School Administration (Gardner-Webb University). Her career has included being a Business Education teacher, Title I Facilitator, New Teacher Mentor and Administrator. Sloan is currently the Instructional Technology Coach at Greer Middle School, where she facilitates training for students, parents/guardians, and staff. She is a co-organizer for Edcamp Greenville and co-creator of #BreatheEDU, a platform assisting school and district leaders with creating racially inclusive & equitable learning environments. She is a member of the Teach Better Team Speakers Network, and a member of SCASCD Emerging Leader Class of 2020. Sloan is also the host of Greater is in Me, a podcast centered around her life as a wife, mother, and educator. The purpose of the podcast is to inform, inspire, and influence listeners to fulfill the greatness that exists within. Greater is in Me is available on iTunes, Google Podcast, Anchor & Spotify. During our conversation, Sloan addressed a common thread in education today - relationships, but helped to deepen our collective understanding by encouraging us to consider building a rapport with students. Relationships are simply connections and can be either positive or negative. Rapport, however, is dependent upon mutual trust and respect, something she reminds us that needs to be curated over time. Sloan also connects this to diversity in that we need to be cognizant of our own privileges, both earned and unearned, and to learn how to respect the innate differences that exist between all of us. She suggests that we listen to varying perspectives, even if we do not agree and that maybe, just maybe, we could help to address the teacher shortage by changing what our students see in front of them each and every day. How are you showing up? I hope that you enjoy listening to this episode as much as I enjoyed recording it. Connect with Sloan! Hear her story and learn how to examine your own location settings for safety. www.coolcatteacher.com/e542 Podcast PD Challenge Your challenge today is a safety challenge for you – and one other person of your choosing. Pick a weather app. Go into settings and educate yourself on how to turn it on for “always allow” if that is your choice. Understand that location-based services can be used to track where you are, so if you choose not to allow any location-based services, then, make sure you know how to turn it on while traveling or when weather is bad. As always, consult with your wireless carrier about your data plan and educate yourself on the apps you use. Set your privacy settings with intentionality and be safe! He’s been in the educational field since he graduated high school and has served as an instructional assistant, substitute teacher, teacher, dean of students, and assistant principal. He started his journey in California then moved to Arizona with his wife and started their family in the desert. After 11 years in the dry heat, he picked up his family and off they went to Texas, to a much more humid environment. He loves helping those who help our students. He currently supports teachers with all of their EdTech needs in the classroom. This includes troubleshooting, planning lessons/units with teachers, modeling lessons for teachers, and providing professional development. In addition, he’s presented at various conferences in Arizona as well as FETC. In addition to this, he is also a foodie and loves to cook and chow down on food of all sorts. He would much rather cook at home with the family than eat out at a restaurant. He is in no way professionally trained in the culinary arts however, he learned at an early age that the kitchen is nothing more than a laboratory where experiments are tested and conducted. Sometimes they are a success and sometimes, you throw up in your mouth! These two passions have come together in his EdTech Bites podcast. He gets to share these two topics with the world on a weekly basis. He believes that the best conversations are had at the table then you break bread together. Congratulations, it’s a new school year and you are about to walk into the new term as an Instructional Technology Coach.  The first thing that usually goes through your mind is a ton of questions. What is a Tech Coach? What does my school district think a tech coach is? How will my staff find me and my thoughts and ideas? What is most important to any Tech Coach is the ability to hit the ground running on the first day.  But how do you do this? There are many blog posts (https://www.iste.org/explore/articleDetail?articleid=433) that agree that the most important thing that you need when starting your school year is an open mind and the ability to make positive relationships? I absolutely agree that strong working relationships are the key to any successful Instructional Technology program. But what can we do before we meet our staff members? The best thing that we can do when we meet our staff members is to be completely engaged in their needs and be ready to meet their challenges hand in hand. Your role as an Instructional Technology Coach is to make the teachers life a little bit easier and the only way you can do this is if you walk into the new school year with these three things neatly tucked into your back pocket. Download this Instructional Technology Coaching Poster Below! 1) Instructional Technology WebsiteWhen starting off the school year, it’s important to have an organized collection of resources from which you can not only deploy at a moment’s notice but share with your staff when they are seeking support.  When planning your website, it’s important to remember that you are creating this website for your teachers and NOT for yourself. You don’t want to make the mistake of creating the perfect website that you adore but is not useful and friendly to your teachers. When planning your website, think about the low hanging fruit in your district and ask yourself if THEY will be able to find what they need when you send them a link to your resource site. Here are a few options from which you can build your resource website WordPressOver the last few years, WordPress (https://www.teachercast.net/episodes/educational-podcasting-today/educational-website-design/) has grown into a pretty amazing platform. So much so, that WordPress as an online environment now incorporates more than 29% of the entire internet.  So why not use it for your Tech Coach website? For many, it’s simply overkill. Too many things moving around and too much time to keep it all organized with its many website themes (https://www.teachercast.net/episodes/educational-podcasting-today/wordpress-themes-for-educational-websites/) . However, if you are looking to use WordPress for your Tech Coach blog, then here are some solutions that you might be interested in. For more information about WordPress, check out our online resources today (https://www.teachercast.net/episodes/educational-podcasting-today/educational-website-design/) . EdublogsIf you are seeking a very easy to learn WordPress solution, I strongly suggest checking out EduBlogs (http://edublogs.org) . Hosting more than 4 MILLION educational websites, it’s one of the easiest and safest ways to create your home blog, or your tech coach website. WordPress.comA few years ago, I wouldn’t consider sharing WordPress.com (http://wordpress.com) has several free themes and options available for using the world's most popular web platform.  Check out a recent podcast we recorded about starting your own WordPress website.
